  • In 1984 Muji commissioned Haruomi Hosono to compose in-store background music.
    Tracks:
    00:00 Talking
    14:56 Growth
    29:49 Muji Original BGM
Note: The third piece, Muji Original BGM, was not on the tape. However, it does feature on the "Muji BGM 1980-2000" compilation, which was also sold only in Muji shops. I have uploaded the three songs so that people can hear them all together.

one time when i was 15 i was up late working on an essay for school, exhausted and stressed and crying, and my dad came in around midnight to say he was going to bed and i basically said whatever just leave me alone and then he came back with a bowl of strawberries he sprinkled some sugar over before saying good night. this song feels like that little bowl of sweet strawberries he gave me late at night.

A woman traveling across a field encountered a tiger. She ran, the tiger after her. Coming to a precipice, she caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung herself down, over the edge. The tiger sniffed and snapped at her from above. Trembling, the woman looked down to where, far below, two other tigers were circling, growling and looking up, waiting to eat her.
      She clung to the vine.
Just then, two mice, one white and one black, came out and started to gnaw away at the vine. The woman looked around, wondering how, and if, she might ever escape. As she did, she saw a strawberry, ripe and red, growing near her. She reached out, plucked the strawberry, and put it in her mouth. Smiling, she closed her eyes and thought, “This is the sweetest strawberry I’ve ever tasted!”

Yes, you have just reached the end of RUclips. It’s a long way back to where you started. You’ve gone through all sorts of categories of videos on your way here. Here, the road forward cuts off and ahead of you is simply empty space. Slowly but surely, new forms will occupy the space that you see before you. For now, hear the music of processes that quietly, gently untangle themselves into existence. It is not yet to be, but you can already see something unfolding, ever so slowly.

technical term is also japanese: Yūgen (幽玄) is a significant concept in Japanese aesthetics that can be found in art, literature, and culture. The word's meaning depends on the context, but it can generally be translated as "dark," "obscure," "dim," "deep," or "mysterious". It can also suggest a mood that is both profound and mysterious, and can encapsulate the allure of something that is beyond what is immediately apparent

He builds a hut made of peony petals and carves a canoe of cucumber to traverse the Big Puddle. On the other side of the Big Puddle is a tall sunflower that towers over him. Rather than feeling intimidated, he is overcome with a sense of adventure and begins to climb. When he finally reaches the flower he meets a ladybug. Together they bask in the sun of a gentle afternoon.

You look at your hands. They're not the same. Every day they change. One day your fingers are short and chubby, the next day you are graced with pianist hands. Nobody has noticed yet. Not once in your life has someone said something about your always changing hands. Sometimes you might get a comment like "Wow you have such pretty nails" or "Your hands are so small" but never has anyone asked why it's changing. Apparently they haven't noticed them changing. Apparently they're not looking at you that much.
You were scared that your first lover would notice your hands. But they never did. No matter how many times yours were in theirs, holding onto each other, they never realized, each time, there was a different pair in their hands. It broke your heart.
You wonder if these belong to somebody. If you're wearing this part of somebody else's body as gloves. You wonder what your own hands look like.
One day you sit down at the piano and let your fingers glide across it. Today you have the pianist hands again. You have never taken a piano lesson in your life. Yet your hands play you this wonderful tune.
From that point on, you know these are somebody else's hands. You don't know whose, but you want to return them. You don't know whose, but you make it your mission to find them. Until some day, you will find your own pair of hands.

The first song is how it feels to come back to an empty house in the middle of a spring rainstorm after a long day. You're tired and ready to relax and as you're taking off your shoes and your damp clothes you're struck by the fact that this is it. You've lived your whole life up to this moment to get here, and you sit down and think about how you're going to go to work tomorrow and do the same thing, week after week, and you're struck by a melancholy nostalgia for the freedom you had as a child. There's a calm acceptance that comes with it, your life is alright, but there's also a crushing loneliness that comes with realizing the death of your past self and all the opportunity they had. You sit, staring at the corner of the carpet that has been fraying for as long as you can remember, and embrace whatever the future will bring you.

You've got more than enough gas to get home and you don't have responsibilities tomorrow, so you're not in a rush but it's still unsettling to be so utterly lost. You look off to the shoulder and you see a deer for just a moment. It's too dark to see whether it's still there when you look in your rear view mirror.

The king cant bring himself to tell the rejoicing peasents, or you, the hero who sacrificed so much, the hollowing truth. In this world, their family has given up hope on them awakening; in the parallel world, they have a small but cozy apartment that they share with their close friend, a chipmunk. The first track sounds like what you would hear if you walked into a library owned by a giant talking cat who makes a killer tiramisu and gives you rare books in return for some neat looking rocks.

Your wife of fifty years just left to collect the grandkids from school.
You’re sitting by the outdoor pool at your home, on a sunny day and realize as you always do that although your love isn’t always extreme, it’s never broken, and like always it’s when your wife has left that you remember she makes you feel that undying feeling, and you fall asleep in the sun before she comes back with the grandkids

You wake at 4:37 in the afternoon, bathed in sweat as the sun pours down on the 1983 mobile traveler that you call home. You stand and stretch your arms above your head, your joints making tiny popping sounds as your hands brush the ceiling.
As you walk to your mini fridge you groan, rubbing the sleep from your eyes and grabbing the last Miller. You think to yourself that you'll have to go into town later as you pop the can open and take a gulp of the bitter drink. It soothes your throat and coats your dry, cracked lips.
This is your third year in the New Mexico desert, a solitary existence far from the place that you once called home. The life you lived before this place seems as distant as a dream, and you think that it might as well be one.
A small tap on the metal door jostles you from your day dream.
"Who is it?" You ask aloud, your voice little more than a hollow rasp, neglected day after day. You never get any visitors this far out.
The only answer to your question is another small tap on the door.
You open to door to see a lizard wearing a blazer and a bolo tie clutching a briefcase over his chest. He stands about a foot tall.
"Hello my friend," he states in a strong southern accent, "Are we having a fine day today?"
    Your brows raise in confusion.
"I guess so," you answer, "Have we met? I wasn't expecting any visitors today."
"Or any other day, from the looks of it."
"May I ask exactly what brings you here sir?" The width of your patience has nearly been exhausted, and the lizard smiles as he runs one of his tiny hands over his head. You didn't know lizards could sweat, but the perspiration glistens on his scaly skin as the warm sunlight bears down on him.
"I only need a moment of your time, sir." A note of kindness rings in his voice and you nod, reaching down to take his hand and help him into the camper. He takes a seat in a fold out chair.
"I don't have any money, if you're trying to sell me something." You say as you grab the Miller can and take another swig.
"Do you believe in magic, sir?" There's a trace of whimsy in the lizards voice now.
    "What?"
    "Do you believe in magic?"
"I-" You pause, looking at the wall and then back at your tiny guest. "Well, I'm talking to a lizard. I guess anything is possible."
    The lizard chuckles.
"What if I told you that I could give you a piece of real magic?"
"I already told you I ain't buying anything."
"Magic isn't for sale," the lizard shakes his head and waves his hand dismissively, "magic can only be given through trade. Everyone knows that."
You sigh deeply, "I don't have anything to trade either. I don't even know what I'd do with magic in the first place."
    "You could have anything."
    "I have everything I want."
The lizard looks around the cluttered camper, at the beer cans and empty bottles taking up residency on every flat surface.
"Sir, no one comes out here unless they're leaving something behind. And they don't live like this unless they're missing whatever that thing is."
There's a moment of silence as you and the lizard look at eachother. You sit on the small couch across from him.
"I can't have what I want." Your voice cracks, tears form in your eyes and you blink them away, looking down at the floor in shame. "I know enough about magic to know that it can't give me that."
The lizard steps down from the chair and walks to you, taking your hands into his. You look at him and see something almost foreign in his eyes. It's empathy.
"Who did you lose?" He asks, his voice softer than the first warm breeze of spring. The tears flow unchecked now.
"My-" you stop yourself, unable to let yourself remember.
"It's okay," the lizard says. "You don't have to tell me." He sighs. "You're right sir, I can't give you the one you lost."
You breathe deeply and look back down at the carpet.
"But I can give you a piece of the life you lived before you lost them."
The lizard opens his brief case and takes out a small glass case containing a button. "This is a magic button."
You wipe the tears from your eyes and laugh.
    "A magic button?"
    "Yes sir, a magic button."
"And you want to give it to me? What does it even do?"
    "It's already yours, sir."
With that, the lizard closes his briefcase and walks for the door.
"Wait," you call out, "what about the trade?"
The lizard hops down onto the hard New Mexico dirt and looks back at you.
"Just live a life worth living, and the button is yours. That's the trade."
Without saying another word he turns and walks away beneath the sun and the blue sky. You watch him until he's only a speck on the horizon. And then you look at the button in it's glass case, and you think of the life you've been living so far away from the pain you've been drowning in shitty beer and solitude. You never left that pain behind, you just locked yourself away with it.
You made yourself an island of sorrow in the middle of an endless desert.
"This isn't a life." You whisper.
You throw back the glass lid and press the button, and for a moment nothing happens.
But then comes a sound you haven't heard in years. Thunder rumbles in the sky, and the air comes alive with the smell of earth and electricity.
    It rains.
You run outside in wonder, grinning and crying as the rain washes over you, and you remember for the first time in so long that it's almost as if you're experiencing this joy and love all over again-
You remember that your daughter loved to play in the rain.
So you play, you stomp in the mud and run and laugh freely. There are no tears that the rain can't wash away.
And for the first time, remembering doesn't hurt.

my all time favorite thing i love to do in life is put a scene together based off of the audio, or visa versa, but specifically i enjoy this process when i know what sort of tone im going for. i love to scroll through comments on the obscure back pages of youtube and read what people are picturing. anyway, point being; i absolutely loved the little scene you described. i think its perfect. and now im sitting here very peaceful and enjoying that same visual. thank you!
