Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s probably just stoked to have Tobias on, and he isn’t a professional interviewer ! *edit* ok… yeah he cuts him off a lot
Figured Tobias to be a difficult guy with his controlling nature about the music and image of Ghost. The reality is the music is super catchy and the shows are epic. I can see from this interview that this guy is a true professional and intelligent and really cares about the fans. He's genuinely hurt by what covid has done and how it affects live music. He's a good guy and let's face it....he can write music. He's got IT.
True. Maybe he's particular, or a bit of a control-freak about some things, but considering how successful Ghost has been up to this point in time I think that is his right since it obviously works. I'm glad to hear that he's doing all he can to cultivate a good working environment for everyone on the tour too since not only is it the decent thing to do, but I bet it also results in better shows as well so really it's a win-win sort of situation.
There is nothing wrong with having a singular and monopolistic vision for your music. Compromising with others can dilute your vision and I completely understand that. Ghost, Nine inch nails, Megadeth, Filter, Foo Fighters - all wouldn’t be the bands they are without that singular vision of the frontman and songwriter.
man, the more I watch tobias interviews the more I learn with him. not only about his ideas and life, but communication as well. it’s gold to be able to speak so calmly and mannerly in a world where everyone is in a rush to say anything, anywhere. I’ve learned already after so many interviews how he behaves in a conversation. he’ll always listen attentively to you like what you’re saying matters and that conversation is important to him. and just like that he won’t interrupt you either. he’ll never answer right away. he’ll always make a pause to think about his next words. that’s why you’ll never see him vomiting meaningless words and saying whatever. he’s undoubtedly an inspiration to me. truly a type of person you have to dig to find.
That's just how most Nordic people are in general tbh. And I don't mean the "I've 47% Viking ancestry and am a direct descendant of Ragnar Lothbrok but I've never been to Scandinavia" people, it's a cultural thing across the North.
Did he ever introduce himself? I ask, because I have a running bet with a buddy of mine on how his name is pronounced. He says it's like the interviewer in this video pronounces it: *toe-BYE-as forj*, whereas I say that's the "Americanized" version that Tobias politely accepts. I have heard his name spoken in Swedish - his native country - as *toe-BEE-as FOR-gay*, and think that's the correct pronunciation. So I'm wondering if he introduced himself as toe-BYE-as or toe-BEE-as?
Tobias is very polite, intelligent and a super criative human being. It's a privilege to hear him talking and sharing his experience in such a fun interview. Way to go, boy 🤍 you're awesome 🤘🏻
Every time I hear Tobias speak, I find 2 thoughts running through my head - 1. He's a certified genius and 2. He's a truly gracious and professional guy despite the craziness surrounding the whole thing. Ghost is that one in a million where everyone wanted someone who loved all of this as much as we do and the supreme nerd turns out to be a damn prodigy and puts out more than just music to interact and amuse everyone, including himself! I love hearing him talk about the business end as much as I love watching him nerd out over 80's metal and punk. Granted, Ghost is and has been my favorite band for a decent number of years now, so I'm a bit biased, but bar none the best show I've ever been to. The interaction the band has with it's fans, the lore and the videos and all of the clergy stuff is so damn much fun! It's crazy and over the top and very nudge-nudge, wink-wink. He's one of the few hugely successful music acts that literally still cares about giving the fans a good show and connecting with them. Love Tobias so much! Also, keep the current touring lineup. They have the same love for the fans and it show and their social media is another extension of the band, despite them all being ghoouuuuls. Johnny, I've liked your music, but this was my introduction to you, the man. Love it!

Tobias is such an intellectually enriching and articulate guy and a consummate artist. I know he gets a bit of criticism for being so monopolistic and dictatorial in his vision for Ghost, but I understand why. The story of The Shaggs is even crazier than you yet know. Their paternal grandmother was a palm reader and psychic, and she predicted that her granddaughters would form a band and became world famous rock stars. So their dad, her son, set out to make it happen. He pulled his daughters out of school and made them take music lessons, and then booked a recording studio when he decided they were good enough to record their debut album. Then he found a fly by night record label that would press 1000 copies of it, though he had to pay them to do it. Well the label went out of business and the owner disappeared with the money and 900 Shaggs albums. And that was the last anyone heard of them until Frank Zappa got his hands on one of the few surviving copies of Philosophy of the World. He loved what he heard in a weird, outsider way, and the Shaggs took off from there.
The Swedish film he's talking about is based on an Astrid Lindgren character (the author behind Pippi Long stockings if that is familiar). It's called "Emil i Lönneberga"
I appreciate that Tobias let John speak and answer the questions he asked. It's rare that an interviewer gives this much freedom to an interviewee like John.
I had eight tracks! Tobias brought good music back to me. I can't possibly list all of the bands that I idolized but Kiss was supreme along with Metallica but Ghost has a place that can't be topped. Thank you!!
I'm a big Ghost fan and have always respected Tobias Forge. But I though he would be this controlling and difficult guy, but he seems really chill and nice! Saw them preform in Stockholm, Sweden recently! Tobias is a genius!
I've been a big fan of Ghost since their first record. Its awesome to see a great in depth interview with him about the band and everything in between. Thanks Johnny!
Johnny was having a few drinks. Tobias is structured and thoughtful. That was the fan trying excitedly to get through an interview with someone who is also a friend.
You can't overestimate how important Okej magazine was to the kids growing up in Sweden in 80s. I heard somewhere that it had a reach of 100%. Meaning every kid read it. Every single one of us. Mind-blowing stuff. And maybe, just maybe, that magazine is part of the reason why Sweden went on to be so successful in the music industry.
Thank you so much for this, Johnny! It was amazing! Thank you for letting us witness this chat between two friends. Much love from Argentina. Love A7X and Ghost ♥
Tobias is a guy intellectually way above average. Humble, great musician, interesting visions about the world in general. He is building a path to make history.
Nobody would ever know Tobias is from Sweden, because (and it's insane), I can't detect any accent. He might as well be from LA or Denver or Seattle. He's so awesome
As a Brit I feel like a lot of non-native English speakers end up speaking with an American-ish accent. So he has that but clearly sounds European. His English is incredible! Britain is awful for learning other languages so I’m always so impressed when other Europeans speak such great English.
I LOVE listening to Tobias. I'm not sure why the interviewer kept cutting him off. =( You get to really enjoy and hear his genius when you let him speak uninterrupted. I really wish he didn't cut him off to talk about his American friend when he just started talking about when he learned English. It's something a lot of us want to know about and you could tell Tobias was going to talk about it in detail.
I day-dream about being in the band Ghost. But listening to their current line-up on their most recent album and how they sound live, it's absolutely great. Ghost has grown and gotten bigger and better with each album. That's what it takes. It's great to see a band that finally does this after Metallica. Each album has its own feel, and own sound. They did it well.
This interview so reminds me of my neurodivergent friends and i infodumping on eachother. I absolutely love it. Tobias is an absolute genius. Ive always loved him, hes so kind and caring and smart. I love where his music style and movie/theater style comes from. I so can very much relate, being a theater kid myself who has such a wild music taste. Seeing all the inspirations is exactly why i fell in love with Ghost in the first place. The way he makes it his own, is absolutely beautiful. And yes. I do absolutely see Phantom of the Opera in Ghost, another of his inspos. Which also probably drew me to him. Plus. Who else doesnt love a man who gets emotional when he plays ToTo- Africa 😭 protect Tobias at all costs.
i cant think of another current artist who is so beloved by other musicians the way Ghost/Tobias is. I could name 20 right off the top of my head. No big surprise though, Ghost is this generation's Beatles. Ghost always and forever
Listening to Tobias talk about how Ghost operates, it's just completely non traditional in the "band" business, which is really cool. Its more of like, a touring musical with 4-5 different teams involved in the production of Ghost from writing to recording to live performance. Super cool. It's the Phantom of the Opera, eh?
My all time favourite band interviewing my new favourite! I saw Ghost in Birmingham and they absolutely killed it 🙌🏻 I’m 100% seeing them next time they’re around!
i saw them in Brum too! Really fucking great show, that was my sixth time seeing them, if only i could meet him now! It will get harder to pull that off as they get bigger haha
the show in Manchester was great, Ghost is one of those bands that I just started listening to this year and now I'm a new fan, I'm happy that I found them!
I really enjoyed this episode. It was like listening to two friends talking, and that is so refreshind and different from another interviews. Tobias is a fckn genious, Ghost is one of the best things that happened to hard rock/metal
Great interview! Thank you for sharing. I saw Ghost in Brussels it was the 5th time for me. It was an amazing show! Tobias is really a Genius and deserves all this succes ! Sure he will continue to impress us for a long time, no doubt about it.
Maybe im bias cause i love Ghost a lot, but this was the coolest interview on Johnny's channel, that i've being following for a while now. Thank you for this channel, Johnny. Hope A7X releases the new stuff soon, and comes back to Brazil. Cheers
People, give it a rest. Johnny already got the message that he sort of interrupted our Tobey a couple of times (which I agree he shouldn't have done) but that doesn't necessarily make him a bad interviewer. It was also nice to hear the things he shared about himself. I saw this as more of a friendly conversation than an interview and I don't know if it's just me who thinks this way but he genuinely sees a friend in Tobias and this is how a conversation sounds like between two friends.
Just saw Ghost tonight in San Diego... wow the show is getting better and better. Saw them in Anaheim earlier this year, but the sound mix there was way off for some reason. Anaheim venue was much larger and my seats sucked as well, but Pechanga Arena was small enough to put the crowd a reasonable distance from the stage. The pyrotechnics were awesome and a serious step up - 2 rounds of confetti cannons, flame pillars, explosions, and spark showers. Cool that there's such a good mix of new and old songs, too.
Awesome Jhonny! What a nice way to listen and keep the conversation intersting and fluent. Apart from that, Tobias is one on the current head of metal. Hope to see you toghether more soon than far
The description of Jan Stenmark reminds me of Gary Larson. I would read The Far Side and break down exactly like Tobias describes. Laughing hysterically until I had to concentrate just to breathe. So funny that you laugh all your breath away. There should be a French word for that like, rire jusqu'à pleurer or something. It takes a Light Heart to suffer through all the abominations we create. Heart Full of Light to reach even just one person who needs it most. HeartFull of Light.
People don’t understand that this isn’t formal interview. It’s a discussion between friends. It’s not just about forge. phenomenal episode Johnny. You could sense & feel the chemistry between you & Tobias. Plus you can clearly tell johnny christ is a little typsy. Please give us an Avenged Sevenfold & Ghost tour! 🤘🏽
Avenged Ghost and Alter Bridge is my dream concert , great podcast as always Johnny. Major respect for the work and talent you both have demonstrated over many years. Thank you and look forward to episode 2
I can understand Tobias talking about the bands who aren't touring because of COVID. I have heard others not put their kids' in in-person school due to germophobia. It is an excuse. I agree that the fans suffer and miss out just like their kids are missing out on having social interaction with kids their age. I'm in an older generation than most commenters here (I was raised during the Beatlemania-[the 60s & 70s]). I enjoyed the interview and am learning a lot about the metal world listening to Tobias'interviews. I admire him and am inspired by his vision, songwriting, and intellect.
Great interview John needed to stop cutting you off but anyway I live in Huntsville al and can't wait to see you all in September I get the chills every time I think about it. You all have my ❤ 💙 💜.
Great interview. Loved how Tobias used the word 'courage' at 20:30. Perfect word to sum up what some people have to go through, only for others to use it against them just because they're not making as much money as they want
An amazing interview! Thank you! ❤️ Tobias Forge is so cultured, it's always a great pleasure to hear him (especially when the questions and the interviewer are smart 😁 ). He is as talented as inspiring. A great dude, really!
I once was sitting in a rehearsal studio talking with Blackie Lawless, I didn’t know who he was at that moment, I was told afterwards who he was. But he was just a dude who was showing me recording equipment and what it does. So it didn’t really resound with me because I was not a Wasp fan, and they were much older than me.
Something I've learned is that most people that writes and produces the music is that they doesn't really have that big of an ego. It's always about the song. They usually have a vision of how the song/album is going to be and sound, but it's always kinda thing. The song has the most ego....at least from what I've learned and experienced :)
The way his face lits up when he talks about his children melts my heart.
If I had the opportunity to speak with Tobias for an hour I simply would not spend most of the time interrupting him but I guess that's just me

And that was the last anyone heard of them until Frank Zappa got his hands on one of the few surviving copies of Philosophy of the World. He loved what he heard in a weird, outsider way, and the Shaggs took off from there.
Thank you for that
The Swedish film he's talking about is based on an Astrid Lindgren character (the author behind Pippi Long stockings if that is familiar). It's called "Emil i Lönneberga"
Thanks
Me encanta escuchar hablar a Tobias, podría escucharlo hablar por horas ✨💖
I think Ghost is a very Magical band, would love to see them preform live🤓❣
I’ve been a fan of ghost since download 2012 and the amount of work this guy has done over those years is incredible
Nobody would ever know Tobias is from Sweden, because (and it's insane), I can't detect any accent. He might as well be from LA or Denver or Seattle. He's so awesome
He knows some words in English that even I don’t know myself!
He sounds very American but as a Swede I can hear that he's Swedish. I think most Swedes would hear that.
Johnny take off your cap, we want to see THE MOHAWK!
Tobias you are the boss, I can't get Griftwood out of my head.
VIVA EL FARY
🐿
I day-dream about being in the band Ghost. But listening to their current line-up on their most recent album and how they sound live, it's absolutely great. Ghost has grown and gotten bigger and better with each album. That's what it takes. It's great to see a band that finally does this after Metallica. Each album has its own feel, and own sound. They did it well.
Ghost and Avenged Sevenfold world Tour! Who’s with me?!?! 👻🦇😮💨
Yes! Agreed 🤘🏻
Yes please and add Calabrese with that
No way.
A7X is my favorite band of all time, and Ghost is definitely in my top 5. In other words, I would shit a chicken if that happened.
@@stephentyree9296 I’d pay to see that.
Going to see Ghost in September! Tobias seems very genuine and cool! Can't wait!😎
Same! Going to the Jersey show.
Lots of fun guys, you'll be blown away 🖤🤘
I just love his interviews 😍 he's interesting and smart polite & hilarious. Such a talented man. I'm here for the duration 💗💗💗😈👻😈👻😈🎵🎵
A7X and Ghost are my 2 favorite bands. Saw them both together in 2013. Cool to see these guys chatting. Please tour together again.
I was already a germaphobe before covid. I’ll always be here for Ghost 👻
@Thoth Phew! I’m so glad! Thanks, I’ll rest now, I was waiting for a RUclips comment just like this to be reassured!
Saw Ghost in Oslo on Saturday Killer show Cheers from Norway Ghost and Avenged Rule🤘🔥
i was there too, it was awesome!! :D
Interestingly enough, a year after your comment mentioning Phantom of the Opera, they ended up covering Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera 🤘🏼
Dude you called it
This was a wonderful conversation, I could have kept listening for hours! Thank you.
My all time favourite band interviewing my new favourite! I saw Ghost in Birmingham and they absolutely killed it 🙌🏻
I’m 100% seeing them next time they’re around!
i saw them in Brum too! Really fucking great show, that was my sixth time seeing them, if only i could meet him now! It will get harder to pull that off as they get bigger haha
the show in Manchester was great, Ghost is one of those bands that I just started listening to this year and now I'm a new fan, I'm happy that I found them!
I think the next Ghost record should come with a miniature modern OK magazine special full of Ghost.
Their Records come with a booklet of amazing artwork.
I really enjoyed this episode. It was like listening to two friends talking, and that is so refreshind and different from another interviews. Tobias is a fckn genious, Ghost is one of the best things that happened to hard rock/metal
The 8bit track underlying the audio at around 40:00 makes me smile.
Great interview! Thank you for sharing. I saw Ghost in Brussels it was the 5th time for me. It was an amazing show! Tobias is really a Genius and deserves all this succes ! Sure he will continue to impress us for a long time, no doubt about it.
Ghost is definitely one of the greatest bands of the 2010s
I would argue Ghost is one of the greatest bands since the 90s
And in the TWENTIES. Into the THIRTIES.
@@danielchico2 wdym, they are since the 60s!
@@FDALl-ms5kg Unless we find out that there’s a Papa -I that headed Ghost back in the 50’s.
Sweet. I still have my 2 favorite tracks "cirice" and "rats" are amazing from GHOST.
Nice work John Boyy! 😎
Love the 8 bit Ghost in the background haha
Just saw Ghost tonight in San Diego... wow the show is getting better and better. Saw them in Anaheim earlier this year, but the sound mix there was way off for some reason. Anaheim venue was much larger and my seats sucked as well, but Pechanga Arena was small enough to put the crowd a reasonable distance from the stage. The pyrotechnics were awesome and a serious step up - 2 rounds of confetti cannons, flame pillars, explosions, and spark showers. Cool that there's such a good mix of new and old songs, too.
God damn. The interruptions of Tobias. Let him finish a thought.
Awesome Jhonny!
What a nice way to listen and keep the conversation intersting and fluent. Apart from that, Tobias is one on the current head of metal.
Hope to see you toghether more soon than far
Love this shit we need more Tobias interviews! Impera was awesome! I had such a blast reviewing it on my podcast. Ghost for life!
Tobias is a Genius 🤘🔥Great interview Johnny Skål from Norway🍺🍸🥂🤘🔥
He keeps asking Tobias a question and in the middle of his sentence he interrupts him and jumps to another topic! LET THE MAN SPEAK!!
Calm down lmao. Americans are typically more hyper than Europeans. If Tobias was uncomfortable he wouldn’t have done it for an hour and 1/2
A crossover between my two favorite bands… how have I never seen this before!?
I knew Tobias would be on at one point or another!! Yesss!!!
I've never heard a derogatory word spoken about either one of these guys, both classics and true professionals.
The show in Oslo was just perfect one of the best shows I've seen 👋🔥🔥
Oh hell, this is gonna be a good one.
this was fantastic
Can't agree more🌹
I just imagine Kyle Williams' kid watching this at some point and losing their mind that their dad was friends with Tobias Forge.
Avenged Ghost and Alter Bridge is my dream concert , great podcast as always Johnny. Major respect for the work and talent you both have demonstrated over many years. Thank you and look forward to episode 2
I saw Ghost open for A7X YEARS ago when Ghost was rocking the B.C.
@@thomasjtsi that is awesome!
Tobias seems like a reasonable dude, I love A7X, ghost got me excited about rock again
There’s several good modern rock bands. Search for em
@@Celestial_Being666 I'm pretty current on my punk and hardcore, but it takes a lot for a hard rock or metal band to grab my attention is all.
A7X and Ghost is a dream collab
I once was sitting in a rehearsal studio talking with Blackie Lawless, I didn’t know who he was at that moment, I was told afterwards who he was. But he was just a dude who was showing me recording equipment and what it does. So it didn’t really resound with me because I was not a Wasp fan, and they were much older than me.
I saw ghost In Birmingham it was amazing Great atmosphere also it was the first place I saw avenged sevenfold live hope you come back
Listened to the Shaggs... thank you for that experience...
I almost burst a blood vessel with a few of Jan Stenmark's cartoons, he's brilliant. Shame a good deal of it wont translate as intended.
What a wonderful interview! Very interesting, thank you for sharing 🙂❤🔥
“It’s a whole new genre” with another band to add to the list as of last Friday! God what a record!
I wish I could have a job interviewing all these legends!! Why can't I just catch a break! LoL Awesome show as always Bro. Stay blessed
lol you think Ghost is a legend.
@@nustde00 lol they are
19:10 But that is exactly what A7X did. Canceled the whole european tour in Summer of 2022. Spot on, Tobias 😂
Missed them in Orlando last year. I sincerely hope I can get to see them next time. Impera album is on another level.
he says I don't mean to cut you off...but he keeps on doing it...😂
Great show, glad I found it. Just subscribed, can't wait to hear more, Johnny.
Thank you 🍻🤙
💯 pure Awesomeness, thanks for bringing it . 👍🤘
Something I've learned is that most people that writes and produces the music is that they doesn't really have that big of an ego. It's always about the song. They usually have a vision of how the song/album is going to be and sound, but it's always kinda thing. The song has the most ego....at least from what I've learned and experienced :)
I like Tobias’s way of seeing things. I would love to be his band mate
Love this interview ❤️✨️ I like hearing something different than other interviews
