    HOLYFUCKINGSHIT I use these things almost every single day and I NEVER knew that there was a port to connect a cable - what!!!
    Dude, you just made my day. I was simply Googling how to find a way to stop making these things stick. Then I came across this.
    And this is even more awesome because I have a shit ton of Arduinos. Damn - this is gonna be fun. Thank you!!!!

    First time i saw one of your video after I searched how digital caliper worked. The one I have is branded mastercraft and is exactly the same as yours with the 4 traces on the pcb and I knew as i saw these that they were ment to be a serial data output. I don't have any use for it actually but that's neat to know I can get a linear reading distance / position sensor from a caliper to an arduino with quite a good precision.

    Superb! Landed here while researching for DIY digital caliper boxes. Never knew these had data out. Mine looks a little different than yours. Wasn't sure if mine had data-out.Tentatively picked up mine and voila, there was the little socket. I am so happy.

      @@MakingStuff And thank you for sharing your knowledge. Was just wondering - wouldn't it be easier and cleaner to solder some JST connector to the tracks that fits nicely into the little slot.

    This is getting better and better! After spotting a strange little lid next to the battery lid on this thing I bought today I saw something that looks like the calliper could be connected to something. Almost no help in the manual other than mentioning "Serial out". Google that and here I am. This is so coooooooool!!! I also just got myself a 3D printer and some Arduino stuff. Goodbye world and hello man cave !!! :D And yeah! Thanks for this video. Now I'm off to part 2! :D

    You can connect this caliper to soundcard with stereo input and decode it in software. Bitrate should be within capability of any decent stereo soundcard. But you need two channels (one for data and second for clock). You can even power the caliper from mic phantom power that soundcard supplies.

      Yup ! Very useful as the caliper drains the battery quite a lot to me.

    Hey, Thank you soo much for this! This is the exact solution I was also looking for to control my filament extruder. I was looking into optical solutions that seemed a little too finicky.

    Plugs for these digital calipers are always hard to find. 3D printed plugs are indeed a great solution. If the calipers are mounted on tooling machines as encoders for a DRO, vibration might cause some issues. In this case you might want to solder the data cable to the PCB. A detailed description can be found on the Caliper2PC retrofit site.

    I suppose the next step is to redesign the plug to have a little barbed clip on it so they won't pull out of the calliper when people chop them about to use them as position indicators on some automation project.

    Could you just float the calipers at 0.7V so that its high and low are within the 3.3V thresholds?
    As for the plug, it seems it'd be easier to open the calipers and solder a small connector on the board. Or I bet a standard connector could be cut open to fit in the calipers so you don't have to 3D-print a special one.

    I wonder if this could be adapted by using the Analog pins on the Arduino? 1.5V would probably show up just fine as a low value, so you could use a simple sketch to read the value as 1 if it's above a threshold.

    i wonder if that plug is any standard one that is easily available for us with no access to 3D printers. I get that the premade cables are hard to find but the connector should be easier. any thoughts?

      +Fredrik Rambris I doubt it, but you never know. It's almost like an edge connector because it just makes contact with the copper traces on the pcb. The only other alternative I have found involved soldering something to the pcb.

    Super glue is not good around soldering. The vapors may even be poisonous. I would suggest a high temperature epoxy.

    Hi, first of all thank you for your work and time. I am trying to take data for a caliper to a Excel sheet, so, if the caliper is connected to the PC by RS-232 cable, and your plug, could I do it?.

    im a bit shocked after i went to find the port on this pair of calipers ive for years and found that piece of plastic that just slides up. i thought i knew those calipers like the back of my hand lol.

    I see the wires coming off the connector, but what color is what signal ? i.e. data ? clk ? ground ? thanks.

      +Allen Lorenz Yeah looks like I left that out. From left to right it is GND, DAT, CLK, VCC.

      +Making Stuff quck sanity check is vcc 5 or 3.3 ? coming from the arudino. I know the data and clk lines go through the transition board.

      +Allen Lorenz Just hook up GND, DAT and CLK. Don't worry about vcc. It is 1.5v on the calipers. You will notice in the video I only use those 3 pins on the connector. Sorry should have made that more clear in the video.

    any reason you couldnt include VCC and power the caliper board by way of a regulated 1.5v ps? would eliminate the need to use batteries & remove any error created by a draining battery...

      Yeah, I am using a 1.5V regulator on the filament extruder circuit board. Check out the filament extruder videos for more info.

      ​@@MakingStuff What is the unused pin? Is it 1.5V? Could you recommend a regulator chip to step 1.5V up to 3.3 or 5V? Or just any old cheapo one should work, like de.aliexpress.com/item/32254368797.html?
