Misfits connection aside, this is still a really fun serial and the titular villain is one of the best in classic horror. I really wish they had brought him back for a sequel series, but this one is still great on its own!
Imagine audiences in 1946 seeing the Crimson Ghost on screen. They had never seen a villian like it!
Now I have to watch "The Misfits". I think I've seen it before but I'll need a reminder.

During the 50's as a kid I would see one of these serials every Saturday. Loved them.

As I recall from the "dim times" when I was just a little boo boo, these serials were shown every Saturday with the kid oriented movies and offered at a reduced price. The place was always packed and first row seats were considered the best in the house. We used to pay 25 cents to get in.
On occasion we would get out of hand with excitement and make too much noise and the ushers would come in and flash their flash lights at us to make us quiet down. Those were the days.
Chris Newport I saw them on my local Creature Features show as a kid, but substitute my parents for the ushers and you and I pretty much had the same experience.
Wow, respect! The movies in my small hometown there were no ushers, so we teenagers pretty much do everything we wanted XD smoking and drinking and whatnot... now theres major movie theaters, it's more control... still it was fun. :)

I got into this through The Misfits, its easy to see the appeal it held ( & IMO Still holds ), Really great fight sequences, I'm surprised @ how realistic they were & that there's fights in EVERY EPISODE! Definatley worth watching !

This is an absolute must-watch.
What a good serial it has stood up the 77 years and is still worth watching. Republic Studios got these serials down to fine art knocking one chapter out in just a 4-5 days.

one of the truly great things about these serials is being able to jump out of a speeding car without losing your hat nor getting dirty........great stuff
Same with the fights. They literally get thrown across rooms & their hats stay on

this is an incredible serial & the Crimson Ghost is still the #1 serial of all time - great storytelling!
With the absolute crap for the most part that is churned out by Hollywood, this serial and most old black and whites are far more entertaining an worthwhile watching.

My dad took me to the Star and Garter theater in Chicago every Saturday so I could watch the next chapter. I loved it as a 5 year old.

What a rock'em, sock'em film. Don't know why I chose to watch it, but I'm glad I did. I love how the men would fight and never lose their hats. The Crimson Ghost's disguise was cool.
Enjoyed the soundtrack, too.
There were more car wrecks in this than at a demolition derby. Diana and Duncan are like a Timex watch- takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

For years I’ve listened to the song Crimson Ghost by the Misfits, and never knew that there was a movie! Been such a big fan, my dad told me not too long ago if I’ve seen the Crimson Ghost, I thought he meant the music video, but he said that there was a movie or tv series?! For as long as I’ve listened to the Misfits, I never knew.

It actually wasnt a film, it was a series that ran in the 40s, the misfits only used the crimson ghosts likeness because it was the only eye catching thing they could find to put on posters

BTW, all of the exterior "university" shots were filmed at my Alma mater, Occidental College in Eagle Rock/LA, CA.
My mother's cousin retired from teaching at the Naval Academy and taught math at Occidental in the 1950s. His father was a battalion chief in the Los Angeles Fire Department. His sister was a PhD Biochemist at UCSF.
I love how they have knock down drag out face punching battles, but no one's hat ever falls off. Classic.

I agree. I am an avid R/C flyer. I did not think they had these back in '46. The transmitter almost looks like some we have used about 10 or so years ago.

Tom Steele, the legendary stunt man, used soft rubber tubing inside his hats to keep them on. That was to keep the audience from seeing that he wasn't actually the actor. He was such an essential character that often the actors were chosen because THEY resembled HIM.

I was 3 yrs. old when these chapters were made. Watched all 12 over a 3-day period....loved it! Tons of fighting, Ashe (hi o silver), never thought he would play a bad guy, Duncan, a cross between Cary Grant and Rock Hudson, Linda Stirling, wow what a knockout.....closed circuit cameras, wireless recorders and did I mention "tons of fighting", especially between Duncan and Ashe; those two should be married! It was great to go back in time once again!!! (LS69FREESTYLE)
+Myrna Groger ....Yes,..I just want to know what kind of glue they used to keep their hats from falling off with so much fighting going on,..and Clayton Moore (the lone ranger) had to provide for his family and took on all these roles,...before he made it REAL BIG as The Lone Ranger. He was great!
+walter condi Clayton Moore also often played the good guy (the FBI serials) and was playing the Lone Ranger at the same time he was filming these serials.

One of the main serials used in the firesign theatre guys JMen Forever. Read William Witney's book "In a Door, Into a Fight, Out a Door, Into a Chase." Great background on what it took to make these films.
Love Charles Quigley! "The Crimson Ghost", "The Iron Claw", and "The Shadow" are three that are familiar to me. I love the way you have placed all the chapters of this serial into one full movie. My visit to a theater was in elementary school. Teachers would walk us to the only theater in town on Main St. My first theater movie was "The Sound of Music", which I still love today. However, imbedded into my heart and soul were the serials played before the feature film, the first one being "The Iron Claw". WOW! The young girl I once was still listens to OTR for "The Shadow" amongst others, but finding all chapters of "The Iron Claw" has proven difficult! May I place a request for a full movie of "The Iron Claw" serials, please?

I remember waiting all week to go to the South Los Angeles "Southside Theater" Saturday ALL DAY matinee (for 35 cents) to see these cliffhangers. I guess my favorite was Commander Cody and the Radar Men from the moon. GOOD TIMES.
Watched a lot of these old serials. I think the fight scenes in this are perhaps the best (but they all get a bit tiresome once you've watched the first hundred or so).

Fun fact : these movie fight scenes are impressive because they’d have the cast get riled up and provoke each other and filmed real non scripted fights 👍
You'd need to document that. If an actor got hurt it would screw up the filming schedule.

Clayton Moore as a "baddie"! And Diana was quite the tough, scrappy cookie! Jumping out of planes and out of control cars plus jumping into fights! Nice to see a female lead who does more than faint. Thanks for this. GREAT fun.

Crimson ghost is one of the best villains!
What a totally unique voice he had, Clayton Moore. There were two color full-length Lone Ranger movies, both with outstanding plots and actors. The other "full-lemgth" one is actually a compilation of several introductory b/w films about the start of the saga. It too is very good--about the "Cavendish Gang,"
You're right about his voice. I worked with a man in an office decades ago who had a similarly distinctive sound. He was very cool and professional, like Clayton Moore.
Bill Witney introduced Linda Stirling to her future husband, Sloan Nibley on this serial. Nibley would write many of the Roy Rogers films of the late Forties and Fifties. The iron collar placed around the necks of the Crimson Ghost's minions was an early form of thought control. This would be the last serial Witney would direct before going onto the Roy Rogers films.
Sloan Nibley. That sounds like a name you would give to the pencil-thin moustache blackhat oily badguy in a comedy parody western spoof.
Maybe so, but Mr. Nibley was the scriptwriter of several of Roy Rogers movie and also scripted Springfield Rifle, starring Gary Cooper.

Many of these great old films were butchered to fit time slots on the new TV system. THAT is where the missing footage went, and it raises merry Hell with the continuity.

I see the Lone Ranger is one of the bad guys, in this movie, when Clanton Morre was the Lone Ranger he'd go to Rodeo's & my sister whld hang out with him, doing all kind of horse tricks, etc, back in the 1960's & early 70's

When I was a kid back in the early to mid 1960's, I used to watch some sort of serial drama that came on after school on Tuesdays and Fridays. I was wondering if these Republic serials were what I had watched, since I can't remember. I do recall that they always showed a little bit of the previous episode whenever a new episode aired. Can anyone help me remember if it was the Republic serials I watched?
I love the fact the key to his cave lab is hanging two feet away! Sort of like Mayberry's jail security...
I can see why the Misfits chose this as their mascot. This series is fun, and the Crimson Ghost is a dastardly, ghoulish delight.

"...did everything in suits"(and in this serial all the baddies are in dark suits) but even better: ALL the men wore hats and the hats ALWAYS stayed on, even in the most extreme fighting.
I love these serials for the old cars and the beautiful female assistants, but many chapters (of other serials, tho thankfully not this one) have a lot of fights that end with someone falling/being pushed out a window and the fights look choreographed...almost like standard dances. You can almost imagine the script saying: Fight scene...a #35, #56, and a #17 then the hero runs out the door and drives off at a high rate of speed.
The best part of these serials? Trying to guess who the bad guy is.
BTW, the actor playing ASH would go on to be tv's Lone Ranger for those who may have missed it.
CLAYTON MOORE(THE LONE RANGER) WAS PLAYING BAD DUDE ASHE. WHEN DUNCAN AND ASHE FOUGHT, ASHE ALWAYS WON BECAUSE HE IS THE LONE RANGER, AND HE DIDN'T NEED TONTO TO WIN. DUNCAN SHOULD GET BOXING LESSONS AND UFC TRAINING.
