Fern chose magic, as stated in Episode 3. Heiter didn't raise Fern to be like him, he raised Fern to be Fern. As all good parents do
And he knows that the best mentor for her is frieren.
16:37 About Freiren saying that it has only been 10 years, it is not too late. This is basically the lesson Freiren learned in episode 1. She waited for 50 years to go back to visit Himmel and discovered that he was at the end of his life. What Freiren is telling Sein is that it has only been 10 years, if he is still alive, it is not too late to still say"hello" and spend time with him. Don't wait until it is too late like she did with Himmel.
And the cycle is complete. We finally have the MC/Leader, Female mage, Corrupt priest, and scared warrior just like the OG party.
Nope, missing a hero, and Sein is gonna go get him
@@RandomUserX99 yup, i don't see frieren being himmel.
That's why I phrased it as I did. She's the leader this time, Himmel was the leader last time. Then on their journeys they aquire the same additional party members
The elder brother was a non corrupt priest, and lives modestly, only uses what’s really necessary etc. it wasn’t that the village itself was impoverished
Also Stark always seems to be on the verge of death when they do have intense encounters, so he probably wanted a healer lol
Although he never went into any detail, Heiter did explain to Frieren when she first met Fern that she has the natural talent to be a great mage but he, being a priest, was unable to train her beyond the basics. Fern is a natural prodigy when it comes to magic. The demon she recently killed even said as much. He resents people like her and Frieren who are natural geniuses at magic.
3:45 Because the priest magic and sorcerer magic are different systems. Priest magic comes from the goddess, you need specific talent to learn priest magic. So even if you are talented mage, it doesn’t mean you can learn priest magic too.
Minor spoiler about them defeating the demonlord
Frieren herself said it was definitely a group effort defeating the DemonLord, if even just one fell its game over.
I'm sure Heiter taught a lot of different things to Fern at the start. But as we saw in episode two, she ultimately chose to become a mage due to her love of magic.
Hopefully Sein finds his friend. If not on their travels, then at the end of the journey in heaven.
I think in episode 2 it was phrased a little differently. She focused on it because she had "talent" for magic. Frieren and Fern first start forming a connection because they both like magic "somewhat." In truth to Ferne what motivates her to learn magic so diligently is she wants to prove to Heiter that she's going to be okay (as Frieren's apprentice and because of her own strength), and that he can pass on without regrets.
@@jofujino Fern did train hard for Heiter's sake, but my main point was that she did initially choose to become a mage; y'know at the end of the episode with the "it didn't have to be magic" thing. Also, from the backstory with Flamme in episode ten, I'm led to believe that Frieren and Fern actually really loves magic. They only say they "somewhat" like it as part of their deception; to be seen as a someone not dedicated to magic.
@@jofujino I think, in the middle of episode 2, when Fern asked Frieren why Frieren was so passionate about magic, Frieren answered that she and Fern were alike and at the end of episode 2 Frieren reaffirmed that. Fern doesn't realize that the reason she CHOOSES magic is also because Heiter complimented her, just like Frieren did when the hero's party complimented her on her silly spells. More precisely, the reason both of them like magic is because they want the people around them to be happy. When Frieren reaffirmed, Fern remembered the flashback when she created the glowing butterflies and Heiter was also there and Fern realized what Frieren said was true.
It’s also possible that Sein’s friend is still alive, but in a similar mental rut of, “dang, I didn’t return in 3 years like I said. What if they hate me for breaking my word? Maybe I should just stay gone, it’s alright been this long after all.”
I always interpreted the hyper small tub and sickle, on top of showing how priest should live in poverty with humility (but priests need to be frugal, not masochists so it made no sense), as a way for Sein's bro to push him out of the village by frustrating him of an overly frugal life.
I think it’s interesting that Stark is the only member of their current party that isn’t a prodigy. Fern, Frieren, and Sein all show far about average innate abilities in their field that has only grown stronger with experience and training. Stark was a runt who worked up to his current level due to having a good teacher and companions. I wonder if the show will specifically touch on that.
The impression I get is that Fern chose to be a mage, and Heiter decided to respect that by getting Frieren to teach her magely skills instead of teaching her to be a priest himself.
And less seriously, maybe the older brother was purposely getting extremely undersized tools just to make Sein's life in the village more difficult so as to passive-aggressively push him into leaving on an adventure like he wanted.
you forgot "won't somebody please take this child home?" after the kiss throw
That was a low blow and so funny ROFL >_
I love that Frieren states that she doesn’t like Sein because he reminds her of how she used to be. But, even though Frieren doesn’t like seeing him, she wants to go out of her way to help him, to pull him out of his rut. In Frieren’s past, we get this idea that she just didn’t really care about people, due to how short their lives are, compared to hers. But, as we see Frieren on this new journey, we see moments of her going out of her way to help others. I love it. Also…. It is so funny that Fern has an issue with all of Sein’s issues, even though Heiter was ALSO a “corrupt priest” 🤣 Since Fern loves Heiter so much, she doesn’t see any issue with priests drinking alcohol 🤣
My head canon is that all 4 of them will have someone important to meet in “heaven”, and the priest’s is going to be his friend. I’m not sure if Stark’s would be his brother or Eisen (assuming he dies in 10 years)
Clarification on the differences between magic and priest magic. Some people found it to be spoilers so spoiler alert. It won't spoil the plot though, just the magical system. Read it if you want to know more but wait if it bothers you.
Priest magic comes from the Godess and you need a natural affinity with it (a litteral gift from the Godess) to be able to use it at its full potential. Technically, some mages with a priest book can cast small spells, (or bigger if they have a double affinity for both magic and priest magic, wich we will encounter only once in the show and seem very rare), but they are not really efficient.
Fern probably had no talent to become a priest but had great mana so Heiter taught her mage stuff.
Maybe add a spoiler warning?
@@maverickoen1359 Is it really a spoiler, I think it was stated already?
@@orelliaorellia142 I don't think this info was revealed in the anime yet
Oops spoilers 😅
@@maverickoen1359 Sorry then, but I am summarizing some infos that are there from a long time (plus some heroic fantasy background rules). Maybe there is a time later were it is more extensively explained but I can't remember when. I hope it did not spoiled the show for you, it was just intended as clarification, I don't think it impact the plot in any way.
A super good/great episode of Frieren indeed. I think Frieren's seduction didn't work only cause Sein likes his women more stacked. Also, Andrew, I think the joke went over your head this time--since the village and hence its church is supposed to be impoverished, instead of making normal sized tubs and sickles for sale to raise money for the church they could only afford to make toy-sized ones. The sad and somewhat humorous thing is that the toy-sized items would probably sell for more money than their normal-sized versions if only the villagers could afford them. Anyways, looks like it is going to be good to have Sein part of the party and I'm looking forward to next week's episode.
I think I see it now. Himmel’s role was to get Frieren to see Qual’s Zoltraak spell and then take her to the demon king. I think Frieren got stuck because she didn’t have a spell powerful enough to take out the demon king. After battling and sealing Qual, she developed her demon killing attack magic based on Zoltraak.
On a side note, to me, the tiny objects was the older brother telling Sien that he was too big to live in that small village.
I think I made the comment last week or the week before with a 4th involved in the party. It was the episode with the elven monk. Yeah this is a journey to recreate the Hero's journey, the difference being, that Freiren is the hero in this story thus you have Fern as the mage. Freiren was the last to join that original party, this time it is the priest who is almost a carbon copy of Heiter. It is so well put together from a story standpoint but so obvious at the same time.
Woah some deep thought analysis there :D, if my master couldn't defeat the demon lord so how could I (inner self doubt)
I just watched the first episode in german. It's weird to hear random words used as names.😊
TFW even the "in-between" / "breather"-episode makes you cry. -- But I guess that's just me, identifying too much with Sein's situation.
Don't forget that Stark was ready before Freiren or Fern had even made a judgment. Stark was the only unbiased person in the party and knew that he would be a great asset
My head cannon assumed there was some kind of argument about frugality, and now priest brother occassionally gets stuff from the doll houses of the local kids as a joke to older brother.
Frieren: The Meme Slayer!
Another video, another surreal experience of having Andrew verbalize my thoughts with more eloquence
Difference between Priest and mages is nature of Goddess Magic (the one which Priest use) - if magic can be lern by everyone (with limitation of your mana pool and natural talent), then Goddess magic could be used only by select individuals with natural born ability (to put it clear - Frieren cant use Priest spells even if she lern them)
This is a spoiler for future episode infomation dude. Delete this
11:15 The points you raised about why Freiren pushed Sein so hard is well thought. I think there is also another factor working here. Freiren pointed out Sein is a genius, and seeing a genius wasting his time stuck in a small village is such a waste. There is a treasure trove of knowledge out there. This is also a lesson she would have learned when she joined the hero party. And so, Freiren might be subconsciously wanting Sein to go out into the world to learn and develop his skills. Which would tie back to why Freiren hated her old self when she lived quietly in the forest, where she wasted all that time not learning new things, as you pointed out.
Priest magic and mage magic work on different principles. Generally the skills don't overlap too much. You'll find out more later.
As for the poverty thing, contrary to the real world. the idea of priesthood is to take a vow of poverty - the idea being that the wealth should be spread to the needy and they only keep the bare minimum to keep things going. The running gag is a play on the poverty vow.
I love how we are exposed to a new side of Frieren nearly every new episode. Chuuuuu sexy lol.
Normal people: Why Fern didn't become a priest?
Me, a Catholic: Pfffff! Female priests, funny.
The manga has explained your question about Frieren waiting for a group to pick her up. It will be explained later.
Brah I was cracking up so hard at the 😘
Frirn and Frn
Interesting insights. Damn I am like that too in one aspect. o.O
Regarding of why Heiter didn't teach Fern as a priest. There is a reason for it and you'll get your answer probably 1 or 2 next episode.
4:12 Why Fern is a mage and not a priest. Go back two episodes, where Heiter and Freiren was having a talk about sharing each other's story. When they touched on Freiren's mana hiding "hobby", Heiter jokingly said he might have a daughter who would become a mage. Even back then, Heiter already had the idea of a daughter who becomes a mage. So, it is not something that happened because of Fern.
Im not gonna spoil but later on it will become clear if or if not frieren defeated the demon lord
"Kraft...he seemed like a good person..."
Kraft seems to be in a different boat from Heiter or Sein. Beyond the fact that he is literally from another time, he clearly didn't start out as a clergyman, like Heiter or Sein did. He's implied to have had a "come to Goddess" moment at some point in the (very very distant) past, so he's naturally going to be more pious than either of the other two.
thats a funny prospect because its kinda accurate to real life
Kraft would not have made a good party member either, since he is a fighter class, and they already have Stark. Monks also specializes in un-arm combat, hence Stark pointed out that Kraft did not have a weapon with him. Also, Kraft could not use magic, and so he was not even able to start a fire, which is a simple basic spell even beginners could do.
Fun episode and great episode review. Is this based on a Manga and/or LN? Will you be doing missed content a la Mushoku Tensei?
Stark is still such a dude and is my favorite character!
Ps 😘 🤯
Manga
Frieren use "Himmel killer move"
It was super effective!
Did you replace your ReM poster by Frieren ? 🤨
Yey! A new degenerate priest :D
lmao I love how the legacy of the old party still lives on xd
I'm pretty sure their was a scene of Fern having a mage tutor with her parents. So I figured she already had some training before meeting Heiter thus he continued teaching her because she loved magic. I personally not a fan of Sein yet.
Frieren didn't defeat the demon lord. You're just underestimating Himmel. The point of Himmel is that he achieved the unimaginable despite lacking the super duper magical sword. This shows not only how awesome a dude he was, but it's also the greatest example that humanity can achieve the greatest things despite being such a short-lived race, which is a major theme of the story. This isn't really a story about an elf. This is an story about humanity from an elf's point of view.
Deadly kiss 😘
Frieren is a masterclass in how to do a weird quirky character. Soooo many shows are terrible at that (especially non-anime). Frieren is so funny and odd without it coming across as forced.
wait where did they say flamme had a party?
Not sure if it’s a spoiler, but short answer is: she didn’t.
it's the line in ep 5-ish where she said she reached heaven and saw her companions or something similar
Flamme never fought the demon king. She was human and it was implied that she died of old age. Plus, at the time of her death, Frieren was her apprentice. If she went to fight the demon lord, Frienen would have gone with her.
Really a brilliant review of Ep 13. This whole character issue with Frieren and regret flew over my head entirely, but you are spot-on right about this insight into Frieren's very complex personality. There is confirming, physical evidence for the entire observation. Frieren never is shown to wear earrings, and this for a 1000 years after Flamme. But once she is persuaded to join Himmel's adventure, she starts to wear earrings and apparently, never takes them off. Frieren's earrings are very similar to Flamme's earrings. Both are Red teardrops with one difference, Flamme has a magical dot at the bottom, and Frieren's do not. But both are magical because they do not attach to the ears. Frieren is always shown sleeping with the earrings on which must be uncomfortable. Is this physical confirmation of Frieren's overthrow of regret in the same way as Sein's overthrow of regret?
Basically Frieren: 😘
It's Freeren, not Frrren.😁
Glad we got some sausage in that party.
It was a real tuna-fest for poor Stark.
Still it will... until Sein leaves to his search.
Lol ferm is to logical to be a priest
- I'm an old lady.
- No. You aren't.
- I'm thousand year old.
- Yeah. I know. You have being fourteen for a thousand years, so I don't hope you turn old in my lifetime. I have better chance with Feren in a decade or so.
Again, its Pronounced FRIEREN ie FREE-REN, Not FUR-REN... FRIEREN, FRIEREN....
It's pronounced "Free-ren". Please...
