I absolutely LOVE the author's take on demons. It's so alien, but it carries its own inherent logic, albeit a logic that could only come from an intellect completely devoid of any semblance of humanity.
You could almost argue that they're not even really _evil,_ at least not individually. There's no more morality in the equation than there is in an anglerfish using its lure, or a spider using its web. Demons are predators; humans are the prey. They didn't learn to use human speech to deceive for the sake of some evil goal. They did it to catch prey, like some predator might do by imitating a bird call. And even though they are extremely intelligent, because they aren't human, they don't fully understand the meaning behind what they say. They just use what has worked before, and if something isn't successful, they adjust.
The child demon in this episode doesn't understand _why_ crying "mama" makes humans let down their guard and cease violence towards her, she just knows that it does, and that's a positive outcome for her.

Oh btw spoiler alert (kinda I’ll still be vague about it but read at your own expense ig):
Yeah they explicitly reinforce that demons aren’t “evil” cuz concepts like “morality” aren’t something demons really feel in one of the more recent arc in the manga so you’re right btw

If you notice later on, the demons from.further back resembled humans much less and monsters much more. The newer demons seem to look like 'attractive' humans. The females are small, non threatening and cute. The men tall, distinguished, attractive. This is yet another evolution to decieve.
It makes me wonder though if one day the demons will accidently evolve empathy and actually become like humans.

I think the hero party's statues aren't made so that Frieren remembers. Frieren seemed sad that she was the only one who remembers her master's face, so Himmel made sure that there would be people who could share the memory of their party long after they died. One of my favorite aspects of this series is how it recontextualizes certain facets of the characters and world as we go on the journey. Frieren, magic, and the demons have a lot of depth and I delightfully anticipate all the anime onlys experiencing it for the first time.

It's so that in far future Frieren remember that the Hero party really exist, not just some fairy tale unlike her master Flamme who don't have a statue and nobody remember the face anymore making it looks like the legendary mage is just a fairy tale.

At the start, i think himmel did the statues, mainly for himself. Thats why (besides the capital, because that was their last stoppoint) all we see is statues of only himmel, until we reach that episode.
Then we see statues of the whole group. So its kinda like what himmel said, also struck a chord with Eisen and Heiter. And they basically decided to make statues of them.

As always the author of Frieren is very on the nose with the naming of characters. As a german it really makes me chuckle.
"Lügner" is german for "liar", because well.... he's lying
"Draht" is german for "wire", which refers to his wire-like magic he used to cut the guards heads off
"Linie" is german for "a straight line", which seems a lot more abstract. And because I don't know the sauce material I have no idea how that relates to her.

Btw my guess is Aura was long prepared but hid purposely till Himmel died, because he crushed her so badly, just in case when she raises again 80-year-old Himmel would show up outta nowhere and cut her into thousands of pieces, she would rather wait a mare 50 years or so.

Absolutely. They may not have human intelligence, but they do have a form of intelligence. It's just that they don't see any other intelligent being as anything more than food, & they see no point in communicating with food, beyond luring it in for the kill. They have no compassion or empathy. They just use human speech like a hunter would use a mating call. That's what makes them so terrifying.

    • @freibier

@@WinterGirlRules Yes, the concepts of "good" or "evil" do not really apply to them. They are simply intelligent predators. A tiger eating a farmer is not "evil", it just does tiger things. The demons have learned that saying certain things makes humans let their guard down, so the demons use this to prey on humans, even though they have no clue what the words they say actually mean.

So far there's a lot of monsters based on deception in this show. We've got mimics, which pretend to be treasure. Einsam, which pretend to be loved ones. And now demons, who pretend to be humans. Each one tries to get humans to drop their guards by using their emotions against them, via greed, love, or sentimentality.

  • @WinterGirlRules
    @WinterGirlRules Год назад +3

The way Demons in the "Frieren" universe imitate human speech isn't as innocent as a parrot's chirps doing the same. It's more like how a hunter or predator imitates a mating call, or an injured animal to lure in their prey. They may have some level of intelligence, but they're incapable of communication. They see all other intelligences as food, & see no point in communicating with them. Frieren knows that they're nothing more than pack hunters & it's either let yourself be eaten, or kill the predator that's after you. I mean, this series is giving demons in all other anime a bad name, but damn. The author knows how to create a terrifying villain, & monsters that are genuinely worthy of the name. I am loving this series so much. Can't wait for the next episode, & I hope demons are recurring villains, because "Frieren" demons are great villains.

Doesn't hurt that Lügner's VA (Archer!) absolutely nails the delivery. That's the exact kind of haughty yet oddly emotionless tone I was imagining when I read this part in the manga. Gotta love an adaptation where it's clear that from the producers, to the voice actors, down to the in-betweeners, there's not a person on the staff who doesn't love this material.
Also thought the peculiar, Zuckerbergian delivery by Draht (the demon who confronts Frieren at the end) fit very well, though that's not really how I imagined it. Clearly he hasn't spent as much time interacting verbally with humans as Lügner has, because there's basically no attempt to affect any humanity in his voice.

But Demons and monsters and elves were already lagic users from millenias. Magic is more ancient. Also, a lot of spells Frieren collect are popular lagic, created and used by common folks, that were invented during the last millenia by humans who use magic to make life easier (since they don't have all the time in the world).

I don't think the key factor in Frieren's being able to kill the demon child calling out for mother is her emotional disconnection. I think it is her experience and wisdom. She's got the eyes of someone who seen this time and again and she knows a lot more than anyone else about demons and their families (or lack thereof) so she clearly studied them and sought to understand them. Her conclusion that they cannot be reasoned with, negotiated with or coexisted with is coming from having fought with, studied, and seen the tragedies play out to their conclusion for so many years.

Excellent review in general. Just a nitpick. I'm not sure if it was a mistranslation, but elves are not asexual or completely void of reproductive instincts. They are capable of love and have sexual urges, but because of how long they live and how detached they become from others, their urge to really connect and start a family becomes a secondary thought to them. They become loners in a sense because they feel as if the rest of the world is moving in a different time than them and so they put their effort and time to solitary goals they find interesting, like Frieren did with collecting spells.
Imagine that you have unlimited time. What would you do? Would you not try to find something to occupy yourself with? A hobby? Now imagine that this hobby of yours becomes almost an obsession. That is what happens with elves. They feel that they have all the time in the world, so they try to find something to do and trying to connect with others is something they can do later on, they have the time. So the whole not having romantic urges is a byproduct of their concept of time. If not, then the Elves would have died even sooner, after all, the elves where the firstborn of this world if I'm not mistaken as it will be revealed later on from one of the most important characters of this story, an elf by the way. If they didn't have any romantic urges and reproductive instincts, then they would have died long before now. Instead they are still around even if they have become rare.
In the end, it becomes a matter of how to approach them and how to make them want to spend time with you and put the effort to know you. Again, like Frieren tries to learn about Himmel and connect to other people so that she won't miss another opportunity like she did with Himmel.
As for the fact that Frieren is very capable in detaching herself and making the kill, there is a reason for it and it will be revealed later on.
Suffice to say that the elves ARE capable of emotions as much if not more than humans, dwarves and the rest of the intelligent species. The whole reason for their rarity and their march towards extinction is simply a byproduct of their concept of time.
Lastly, a personal opinion. I haven't read the whole thing but I believe that Frieren really was in love with Himmel, just as he was in love with her. But, because of her different sense of time, she mistakenly thought she had the time to just do whatever and they can meet again later without any problems. Even though intellectually she knew humans live short lives compared to elves, her sense of time made her forget that, just like sometimes we forget something that isn't convenient to us in our normal everyday lives.

This was a good subversion of the 'racist old protagonist' trope

Playing off the empathy of humans so that you can reach a terrible goal that only you are interested in.
Sounds like political-activists and most politicians to me.

Political activists are prey for the politicians. The political activists would be more like Graf. Thinking that by communicating with the politician, they can reach a solution that will ensure a resolution that will lead to peace, but the politician sees the political activist, & the rest of us as food. Never trust them. Politicians use human speech to lure in their prey. No other reason.
It's the greatest exercise in futility to petition for an end to all the world's social ills from the people who caused them in the first place.

Silly rabbit, political activists are simply the sheep being led around by the emotional manipulation of politicians who are in turn the corporate conglomerates' monkey boys.
