- Restoring an old cleaver and fitting a new handle made in my style.
I found this old beauty in a thrift store, it's 36cm (14inch) overall with 23cm (9inch) long blade 11cm (4.3inch) at his widest.
The steel is some kind of high carbon heat treated to an hardness between 50 and 55 on the Rockwell scale, appropriate for a cleaver.
The construction is very interesting with the tang forge welded and riveted to the blade.
I guess the extra part on the handle is some kind of guard and the protrusion on the spine is possibly there as a stop when pushing on the spine with the other hand. Not sure! Say something in the comments if you know better.
Guard is made of brass, pinned in place with two 3mm brass round pins. The thin dark wood strip is wenge and the rest is beech with a white vulcanized fiber liner.
Both wood are stabilized, process described in this video:

Personally, I would've worked a bit more on the blade itself/ the part where the blade is being held such as grind it a bit to be flatter to show less of the "detail" and also would polish the hook more. But that's just me I guess.
Only thing I would change is the hook on the handle, that would be gone. I have a question though, what is the chemical you soak the blade in to remove the rust?
Like it back to the no speak videos - they´re the best, let the video do the talking - Primitive Technology does this the best :)
I think you should think twice before sanding a knife the way you did.
I think your handle is absolutely beautiful! Do you know what the "tail" on the knife is for? Strictly ornamental? A way to hang the knife? Something else?
Thank you for not putting public domain electronic music over your video like EVERYONE else.

Randomr Uploads I feel you. Unfortunately is not that easy.As my father got sick he became a better man. I forgave him before he passed away. to me, the old handle had more character. this one was very, very pretty, but too short and too fancy. looked like you got it from a nice knife and transplanted it to the cleaver.
Agreed. The old handle had kind of a viking vibe, but the new one just looks like it could have been bought from a department store. It's pretty and all, but honestly kinda boring.
Restoration videos without talking is 100000x better then ones with
I don't understand the high amount of dislikes on this video... No bullshit intro, no useless commentary, sped up video to prevent our short attention spans from getting bored, and just great footage of a knife restoration. Excellent A+ upload. Ignore the idiots disliking, this is excellent.

It’s a monster! I am grateful that you did not change the shape of it. I think it’s important to keep the shapes that original makers had in mind when they made an item, so that future generations can see what shape it was originally

The speed hammering was my favorite.
When I see a blade like that I think, this is not just for use in kitchen! is a piece of art!!!
Nice job on the blade but the original handle was better proportioned than the new one.
I agree. The new handle is wimpy compared to the old one, and the brass does not add to the look of the cleaver.
@gacekky1 HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA. I mean, they make okay knives too. High of the low end.
I agree, the new one looks like it belongs with a pocket knife.
Old handle is a design meant for chopping. Looks good no matter what though. Only thing i would change personally is making sure the handle pins lined up.
I don't think he restored it for it to be put back into use.
Cool and obviously knows how to do things but it doesn't make sense to me to make that shiny polished handle to go and make the blade and everything stay looking worn.
I think it looks better looking worn tbh
It’s the best he can do, some of the damage is permanent, or require some crazy technique or restoration process to fix
@@qwertyuiop1854 no it doesn't it just requires skill and effort something the guy has yet to show in a video
The reason is because it's a restoration, he can easily make it look shiny like any metal but the worn out look takes a while to develop
@@-godsspeed-9159 on the one hand I agree. The pock marks and texture of the blade shows its history and age. However on the other hand, there's part of me that would really like to have seen it looking all shiny and new. I'm so perplexed right now. So much inner torment.
The whole time I was watching this vid I thought, "if this cleaver could talk?" So much character and love went into this tool and I love that you kept the zig-zag pattern on the blade. My favourite moment was @6:50 so satisfying
Damn that Cleaver was crafted beautifully at the first place.
The handle looks like it doesn't belong to the cleaver. My opinions is purely about aesthetics, I would have gone with a darker wood and metal, also I really like whatever was wrapped around the bill hook, gave it a neat look. The handle looks nice, but it looks like it should be on a refined blade, the billhook and the spike make the cleaver looks really rugged as if it would be found in the hands of a pirate, the handle looks like it belongs to a nobleman.
@@kardinmo that was actually an amazing analysis lol
Maybe it belongs to a noble pirate?
I agree 100% on this. Make no mistake I love it. It looks amazing regardless. It's so nice to see an old knife be given a new lease on life. Not to mention the restoration itself was a joy to watch. But the handle bugged me a little. It looks too small for the size of the knife itself. So that was a slight disappointment on an otherwise comfy as heck video.
Totally agree with this, but still a great handle !
Maybe distress the handle to match the blade
I feel like the blade itself could have used work. But it turned out very nice
Did not replace the knotting detail on the lower handle.
It's a restore not a refurbish. It's still supposed to be old looking.
@@zportukalian1 then why does the handle look perfect lol
@@SkitzSkitzVids the handle doesn't belong tbh. It's kinda like this one hand smithed knife restore where he modernizes it and ruins its rusticness.

I just got into restoring old farm tools. These videos help alot
Finally a restorer that doesn't feel the need to mirror polish the flats of the blade!

That handle looks better than my future
Lovely job! Surprised me... At the very beginning I thought this might be too damaged to fix. Turned out very well. ;)
The Butcher from Diablo I is looking for his cleaver

Aww!! Fresh meat!!
The Butcher's cleaver has a waaay longer blade. It reminds me a lot more of Bino's Kitchen Knife, except the pointy bit is on the wrong side.

Havent even played it yet it's a legendary game in my book.
“Trapped in a room with so many bodies. So many friends.”
Compared to all the other "restoration" videos, except for the handle he did great
I agree with your esthetic choices. Sure, you could have polished the blade like a mirror. And destroyed all that interesting patina and character by doing so. And sure, you could have scooped out exactly the same type of scale on one half, same as the old handle. But by giving it such a modern, polished and shorter handle, it's like you are highlighting the old character of the blade with the contrast, like putting an old museum piece in a modern crystal case, preserving and accentuating it. Well done.
I like to imagine he's not speeding up the video at all, he's just Barry Allen
Thank you for putting lots of effort into this! I think it’s just amazing
I like the contrast between the new handle and the age you left in the blade. Rescued from rust but with a new sharpness and ready for another lifetime of service. Excellent!
That slo-mo on the chopping the squash in half, though!!! Classic! lolz Love the video! thx
Better than perfect job of restoration. A work of art!!
6:50 Most satisfying sounds ever...
# JOKES # it really is tho

I don't know why but your videos are helping me dealing with my depression, thank you.
Yes, yes and yes. Leaving the original patina and pitting of the blade overall is so much more pleasing to the eye rather than a completely grinded back and polished look.
I wonder how many bodies of anything that cleaver has gone through. It looks like it had its history of a dark maker at its handle.
Or maybe it was used to cut cheese
It was use by a undead pudge
His hand protection mattered more then the possibility of it swinging into his leg or stomach /and it has a billhook so it might be for fighting (foxes/wolves). its definitely been misused look at the top and how bent in it from billhooking things ? Which means it is definitely had some time being used for fighting .if not this person didn't know how to make one correct for butchery.
@@jarrynsmith someone mentioned it was used for chopping hands off....i used google to look at what type of butcher knives they used and i found some pictures of someone having his hand chopped off and they used some type of Mallot on the other side of the butcher knife to hit it down on the persons hand....if you look at this butcher knife the spine was really beat up....i think the person might be right about it being used to cut hands off of thieves and what not.

Gorgeous work on the handle, but like others have said, I think it clashes with the worn look of the blade. Amazing skills nonetheless, thanks for sharing and thanks for keeping it simple in the video.

i was hoping you'd reuse the old wood. would be nice to see those old cracks but filled with glue and polished :)
"It was much too big to be called a sword. Indeed it was like a heap a raw iron."
What a sweet old lady. I'm so glad you left her beauty marks intact and didn't sand the blade to a perfect, boring sheen. Her new handle looks great.
i love thiese videos because they are played forward and i love the sound of the sand paper when it is played like that, it makes me feel relax.
Nice job but the original handle looked way better.
I agree. New one looks way too small and proportionless
It's not only a matter of look, it's also a matter of being able to hold it in the palm of your hand with less grip power. The new handle may look better but it fatigues the forearm muscles because of the energy that you have to consume just by holding it. Never the less he didn't do a bad job for the looks of it, but he totally fucked up the cleaver functionality!
@@Snruisy it does not look good. he should come up to with a similar to the original size handle. easier to use and looks 1000 times better.
@@kflynt2006 damn right! a bigger handle is much easier to use, people who made the cleaver knew it better!
@@Snruisy this guy has some skills but his ideas are not good... he makes axes with metal handles... wtf....
For some reason, I initially thought you were going to remove the handle, restore it separately from the blade, then reassemble the cleaver with some fresh twine on the hook. Make no mistake, I totally respect and admire your craft and what you did, but it seems like a shame to just discard that wood, which looked to be pretty solid to begin with.
Great job! You preserved the original work!
Everyone always rags on the handles but I really like this one. Very slick

One thing you could try are graphite sacrificial anodes for electrolysis, I have a medium tank here with graphite rods glued up all around with hot glue and connected together and they are absolutely amazing, they leave no mess, you dont need to clean your item as much after electrolysis and they last and last and don't get covered in reddish crap :)

1:14 is that animal crossing I hear?
Love it, great work. I'm surprised so many commenters don't seem to like the worn look of the blade! I think the distressed blade and simple new handle look perfect.
I like that you made a new and beautiful handle but left the patina of the ole metal blade and the original rivets of the blade to the handle. The walnut (?) and brass are a very nice touch. You've given a nice old tool another life.
If we and the world are lucky, in another 100 years the cleaver will still be here somewhere and another great craftsman may put another handle on it. I have a feeling that the new and current handle will last a very long time and will be loved for it's beauty and fine craftsmanship. Great job! You did good.
Amazing
Nice, I have never seen a cleaver with a tail before 👍
I found the tail odd also,I think this was a repair job handle, I would have expected a rat tail tang and round handle. Someones clever got broke and a blacksmith "fixed up" a handle for it from something else. . . . or I'm all wrong LOL
It's a meat hook!
So you carry a large piece of meat and smaller function is a hand protector. That was a old school meat cleaver like the ones that hook the whole animal apart.
@@jasonmalackly2986 please think that out, you hook meat to hang it or hold it. You can't hang the meat from the clever, if you hooked anything bigger than a small roast it would jam into your hand. It's not a viable useful meat hook.
Hmm hang it straight thru the tendon at the back of the leg and carry it exactly how many animals have you butchered ?
I think that was super cool, good look on that steel.

Would have been nice if you could have polished the blade... I’m not a ferric chloride kind of person.
KLES! My bad :)
KLES! The bottle says chloride
@@brodiebuchner yes you are right, but it oxidized the steel 😉
It's seems to be fashionable....edgy. Men with man buns and beards do it.
Leaving an oxide layer will actuall increase the life of the steal. Mill scale is inert so it doesn't corrode as fast

ok newbie question here, why didnt you "polish" the main body of the metal? it stayed all "rusty" almost like you did only a superficial cleaning
If seen closely there were patterns and markings showing true age and soul of that blade. If polished and removed, might as well buy a new one over the counter. Check out ur local museum, they kept things the way they are if things are salvageable
