Why Modding In Kingdom Come Deliverance FAILED

- Kingdom Come Deliverance was one of the most successful launches of 2018 and perhaps one of the biggest medieval games of all time. The Singleplayer masterpiece by warhorse studios takes players into an immersive story driven campaign in the world of Bohemia. But with it came the wish for mods and modding tools. So why did they end up failing and will a sequel in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 act any differently?

Look deep within you. It hurts but you know It to be true
ouch
Yup
Isn't this normal? It apply to all single player story game, which include Witcher series, Subnautica series, even Half-Life series get the same treatment.
This game was not as popular because most people hated to play as Henry, fat midget, they had to add customization, sales would have been so much higher, because in RPG you want to be part of history as yourself not someone else
this game was hard to mod because it's complex with a thousand interlocking systems. fallout is a simple game with simple mechanics, thus easy to mod. all bethesda games are terrible. kcd was a breath of fresh air
I'm glad we got a realistic medieval rpg once in a thousand years. So that's enough.
Yeah I've enjoyed it wholeheartedly. People just don't immerse themselves enough and snowball content these days
Oh shit it's warbandplays, good to see you here

I think it was more to do with CryEngine being notoriously hard to mod on.
But also being beautiful
@@DarkeningDemise How was state of decay a mess?
the GoT devs literally said they didnt mind working on cry engine, It was Warhorse's tools that made it hard
I think they should have gone for Unreal. It has that nice lighting and is overall stable and easy to use. (For someone who understands it)
@@intothematrix6635 that's not how engines work
Cause WH used a large number of inhouse tools and not all of them were shared with the community. Plus the documentation wasn't ideal. Cryengine itself wasn't too bada to use, but WH established a large of number of workflows for stuff like character models which made custom mesh implementation pretty diffuclt.
We managed to get custom armour in but it was super tedious and discouraged us from working on it further, plus we never found programmers to help us.
Regards

You will love bannerlord
I think you might be giving Cryengine a little too much credit there, I love Cryengine but it is an engine made SPECIFICALLY for FPS games. Fantastic engine, I love all the tools the engine has built-in that honestly blow its competition out of the water once you understand it more, but I think most of the reason WH had to make so many inhouse tools was due to the limitations of Cryengine.
Hope to see you guys come back for the next game
“Skyrim sucks, I can just play as a stealth archer and win everything easily!”
Warhorse studios: *makes archery really difficult*
“Omg archery in this game sucks! I’m gonna make a mod that makes it really easy so I can be a stealth archer and win everything easily!”
completely agree, I love how this game forces you to whip out your bow and hope to god you land those first few shots you can take before the melees get to you when you need to make a bandit camp go away. there's a real sense of danger, even though it's already kinda unrealistic that one man can go into a camp and kill 5 bandits + their leader, it strikes a really great balance between feeling like just another weak, vulnerable human and playing a fun RPG game.
I mean, if you just wear heavy armor while walking backwards and hold that shot til you hit the face you can take down a group more easily than you could with a sword, just taking more damage I guess.
@@rooo1o the way i used my bow was this: stand 10 meters infront of the enemy, shoot them in the face( or in the Dick because aiming), kill the nearest ones, draw the stabby swords, charge like a lunatic, stabi stab-stab time, then steal everything of their half warm corpses and leave them for the wildlife….
it want hard just not fun to use, realism if dun up to a point then it just become obnoxious.
Bows were one of the easiest things to use lmfao
Your missing the main reasoning why some games have giant modding scenes and others don’t, it’s mod-ability and the foundation of creation for the game itself and how many systems would need to be tweaked or recreated. Think about it like this as an easy example how hard would it be to make ai combat and pathing for warband vs deliverance, how about creating assets, the difference in graphical fidelity between the two. The way looting or gear works warband is a simple ui at end of battle. Complex movement dependent systems in deliverance good luck fixing clipping and hit boxes on custom maps. There is also the aspect of the way the code was organized and what engine is being used. Your missing all of these fundamentals in your style of videos about modding and after market support for games. It has much less to do with the points you’ve listed than you think
A lot of that stuff wouldn't be necessary. Kingdom come already had dynamic parking and ai. Just like Skyrim and pretty much every other RPG that's come out in the last decade. The purpose of modding tools was to give us the ability to add things without needing to create our own hitbox/clipping systems. Skyrim and Fallout get high quality assets made for them everyday. Bannerlords modded assets look absolutely amazing. If the passion and demand was there, these mods would get made. The issue is that those things aren't there.
Cyberpunk doesn't even have proper modding tools yet and we've already gotten multiple mods that add in companions, new small quests, reputation systems, complete overhauls of Rpg mechanics
@@nbkhnzzr the examples I was giving were very summarized and not exactly the correct wording and terminology. I’m not in the modding scene dont create assets dont code my knowledge is baseline. But the message the video is pushing is timing/playerbase/and hype being the main reasoning behind the lackluster modding scene for deliverance. Maybe those things carry more weight than I’m giving credit but my point is the vid is completely missing the actual difficulty of creation aspect and the difference between the scale of projects because of the things I listed and much much more
you are right. he is always shoehorning in multiplayer as a reason for this and that. not all people care about multiplayer, especially in mount & blade. look at skyrim, it has one of the biggest if not even THE biggest modding scene. is it multiplayer? no
@@czintrpt5585 Yeah, the multiplayer bit is extremely dumb. It has nothing to do with multiplayer. Most Mount and Blade total conversion mods don't even go multiplayer
@@nbkhnzzr It was a tiny part of the video and was using as a possible reason, not the entire reason. But no, you are wrong, there are hundereds of M&B total conversion mods for the MP. But my main point was, MP Keeps the player base high, skyrim, this doesnt matter its already massive in a massive series. KCD was a first IP so didnt have an already established fanbase. Not for one second do I think KCD should have had MP, that makes no sense. But in general, MP effects player numbers, which effects modders williness to put time into making mods.
This game blew my life apart on release, and this is enough for me to always love and play this game over and over again - like Gothic I. Not many games achieve this.
So true mate. KCD is like a combination between Morrowind skill progression and open world and Gothic's handcraft scenery and quest design. I had strong Gothic vibes too. Unfortunately I don't think we will ever have a new 100% Gothic experience. Maybe the remake that comes. The Gothic 1 remake and Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines 2 are the only games i hope I will play in this life. Peace 🥂
I’ve done three playthroughs but my current one is with all the DLC for the first time.
I saw the documentary on their studio and their game development journey, and KCD was doomed to fail a lot of times along the way. Its understandable the developers stopped adding stuff to the game. Its not easy develop mod support in your game (especially if you build systems without planning on adding mod support later)
To be honest, in game where the value is in studying historical weapons and armour the architecture to the point they recreated world as it probably existed a real towns and villages. Modding some fantasy elements into it would be like putting ketchup on a lobster.

Quite wrong on the first statement, mods will always add games infinite replaybility and should always be allowed if possible
The second is correct and true, some games are just not Made to left Space for modding
I really really wanted a realistic Christian mysticism mod, complete with realistic occult ritual magic used by enemies, but alas
@@ChiccinTendies Would be impossible, but cool idea. Ive thought similar things.
@@ChiccinTendies idk how one goes about making "realistic" magic lol
Skyrim had very cool mods though, like Enderal, which could also be cool for Kingdom come
The best type of scenario to mod into this game, if it could be done better, isn't fantasy but roleplay IMO. The world is so realistic and rich with details, I think it'd be perfect for a roleplay community scene. But alas.
I read somewhere that modding was close to impossible because of the game engine and the game itself. With the game having too many parts, that to have a successful mod. Tedious amount of work had to be put in the most smallest files. Also I think after the fixes. War horse pretty much moved on.
If my Intel is correct, the developer of the Seven Kingdoms mod for Attila quit it's development after the GoT Finale and if what I think that I remember is indeed correct, that's a solid reason to quit it's development
im not even sad that modding isnt super popular

Brilliant game but you hit the nail on the head. A lack of mods (even cosmetics like heraldry) was probably the main issue with the game. Once you've run through the main storyline, there was little left to keep one engaged; despite how beautiful the game is.
if the modding community came back to the scene i would definitely give their mods a go, although for this to be achievable warhorse studio has to shift over to a more sandbox based RPG which would be really cool ngl
i explored it but the farthest modding went for me was a few hud mods.
I think KCD really had the potential for some mods that emphasize more on the sandbox aspect and just bring more to do to the gameworld but ... as you said: no tools for the job and when they were there it was too late.
Bow reticle and stay clean longer was MUST have for me
I never used mods for KCD and played if for hunders of hours over and over again just because it's fun, beautiful, and gives you an amazing world to play. I don't really think that this game need mods like M&B games..
I finished the story and don't know what reason to play again 🤨 if it had mod support it would be cool
You're built different
every rpg needs mods, thats the nature of the genre. no dev is gonna be able to fit every possible playstyle and type of character, so you need mods to fill in those holes.
Warband and every rpg still alive after 5 years literally lives off mods, idk what you're on about lol
The game really over promised with the trailers. It was a buggy mess with barely working gameplay. The devs even straight up lied about some things.
I've been a bit busy in life, but I've always been super fond of KCD and I did complete the main story. I'm just now redownloading the official modding tools, which are now at version 3.0. The last time I downloaded the mod tools they were barely around 1.0. Now I'm looking and looking, and the tutorials for the installation of the official modding tools is outdated, and the author of one such tutorial mentioned that his tutorial needed revisions since the new version of the mod tools came out (and that was older mod tools than i have now), so there really isn't anywhere at all for me to have a solid instruction for installing the newest official modding tools as they do not come with instructions in the zip file of tools. Seriously, we have an 8 part video tutorial of how to do some basic script work with some of the tools, but not a single official video of how to actually set up the newest, or each, version of the official modding tools. It's like donating a bionic leg to an amputee, but not sending instructions or offering technical assistance to install it. it shouldn't be this hard. just write a notepad document and pack it with the tools. this is exactly why i will make my first indy project with Godot, or an alternative to blender game engine, rather than one of the main and proprietary engines, because they're just so damned convoluted.
actually i just went on nexus mods and clicked a link from the official tools description and it takes you to the wiki part of nexus mods. that's where ALL the documentation is. sometimes you'll have to click on a link in a page tree to find the really juicy sections, but it's all there, and i regret finding it. some things are better left burried in obscurity. what a nightmare. hats off to those working on this game to completion, they earned every cent.
If mods were made to add more content to this game I would go "sprinting " back this is one of my all time favorite games!
I would love some kind of small mod that adds some creepy stuff in the woods. They were my favorite woods of any game and finding something always felt special. I kinda expected some creepy encounters but they didnt happen. Would love to love some horror mod! These woods are amazingly creepy at night!
I think to add to the success of the inevitable sequel it’s important KCD 2 is released with mod support with simpler tools
All I really want is just some more armour and sword options practical or decorative just something to make Henry feel more Knight esc or add some more small things into the game. It is because of this game and Skyrim that I desperately wish to get a PC and learn how to properly mod. But even if there's isn't alot of mods Im still glad that we got a realistic depiction of medevil life with this game.
I was never a gamer. being lucky enough to have a real life, I was considering time spend in front of a PC screen just a terrible waste - and I stil do. But after another of my office PC upgrade I've realized, that my system is now capable to run the highest graphic hungry apps on multiple monitors - games included. In that time, KCD was already couple years old story and being born in Bohemia myself, I've just paid couple of dollars and installed the game. After it loaded up first time I've just cranked everyhing to the highest possible resolution and hit the start just to see what happen. This was almost a year ago. I have to congratulate the whole Warhorse Studio team for this truly revolutional game. Attention to detail, truly believable storyline based on historical events, stunning architecture, immersive landscape and above all, the way you guys implemented all at the time possible risk and rewards of being Henry is simply stunning. Actually - it should be exactly the other way around - everyone else should make games at least that good instead of the BS produced nowadays. I'm considering KCD as the Holy Grail of video games. A glitch in the system - in the positive way. Warhorse Studios did put the bar way up there. Yes, the game shouldn't be easy to play or able to snitch your way around because if you try to create a truly realistic remake of a life in mideval Bohemia, the life was damn't hard back there. And there wasn't much of any mods and special abilities avilable as well. Anyway, about 3/4 years later with occasionally still playing KCD as the only game I've ever spendet the the time and money for, I've just pass the 3 million groschen mark in my Pribyslawitz chest - in hadcore mode without a single pickpocketing or ever stealing from others than the bad guys. Oh, and about the combat - try to overpay Zoul and then do singlehandedly defeat everyone there - it's well worth the money. Or do the Rattay Tourney drunk as hell. I've learned a lot about Bohemian history then ever before and that's something you wont find in any other game. Period. I'll love a sequel of this one for sure . . .
I played this game for a time just to not finish it. Seeing it over and over again makes me wanna return and finish it. I personally am not a heavy change the narrative modder kind of guy. I would only mod the game just so I can make it more immersive and interesting visually. Other than that I think the single-player aspect with linear storyline suites me.
I always kinda figured someone would mod it to get something kinda like Darklands. If I had serious money, I would fund a remake of that one like the enhanced versions of Baldur's Gate.
Modding could have worked for Kingdom Come deliverance if the tools were released when the game was. As it sat they came out once the interest was already gone.
I was excited for the game of thrones mod that was supposed to take place in the Riverland. It's to bad we didn't get it.
I really wished modders would support this game, let's hope for KCD2 and it being more easy to mod
Castles of Bohemia is quite fun tho!
YES!!! This is exactly what I've been saying. It would also help if Warhorse released a bugfix patch for all the visual glitches.
Whenever I played KCD, I felt that some mechanics that I could need were bare bones or weren't there at all. Like mechanic of cooking, smithing, etc.
What a beautiful game! Too bad it missed the opportunity to have a large modding community to expand its lifespan. I have made some mods myself waiting for KCD2 2 to come but I was waiting for more ambitious projects for this game like total conversions.
We need a KCD 2 or a KCD "remake" so that they connect both regions of Bohemia.
next kcd game is in development
Part II is now announced, let's hope the MOD-Kit will get released faster then.
This game doesn't need massive mods, simple UI and QoL changes are enough
I love this game, love love love it. In its original form ive still played throught it maybe 4 times over the years. The reason Mods failed is the difficulty to install them and finding the ones that still work vs not. Truly insane how hard it is to get these mods to work
The peak of KCD mods are the retexture mods lmao. Sad but true. All though some nice mods have been made but some of not been released and simply teased for some reason (They were done btw).
I played a bit of KCD at release, liked most of it, didn't a few things then droped it with intention to wait a year for patches and mods. Three years passed and there's nothing. No villages overhaul, no crossbows, no czech dubbing, no time in my life to try it again. :
im pretty sure its because the modding tools are bad the devs released modding tools but they were hard clunky and limited effectively making the game very hard to mod
bro seriously killed that dog at the end
If they only made it like Skyrim's Creation Kit.....
Freaking loves this game man, definitely a masterpiece.
I think it's probably just the difficulty of the engine and working with it using the tools etc. Skyrim got massive new mods constantly throughout it's life-cycle and people are still developing massive mod projects. If the core game is good it doesn't REALLY matter in the long run if the tool took a year to come out. I'm sure it matters short term but all that needed to happen was one, or a few amazing mods in order to spur the rest of the creative community back into the game. Simple mods like Enderal going viral for example probably inspired a hundred new mod creators.
I think there is a problem with the idea that as there isn't a very large active player base anymore, moders aren't willing to put much time in moding.
For example, Daggerfall, the second title of the Elder Scrolls series released in the mid 90s, was completely recreated using the unity engine by fans (Daggerfall unity), and now moders put tons of their time to create mods and overhauls, depise it being rather niche and don't attract a big player base.
Also, I don't think we can link the lack of mods to the late release date of moding tools.
An example would be Master of Magic, a DOS game that always was a niche game are still receiving patches and overhauls (Caster of Magic) despise the lack of moding tools (they did it by hacking the files of the game, writing new code in assembly and manipulating the binary).
So, in my observation, the love that a subset of the players maintain for the game, and the replayability offered by the said game are the two defining points for the game longevity, which includes its mod community.
I wish that multiplayer mod existed
Anybody else experiencing the game not being able to load from the epic store? Keeps saying ESO failed something along those lines.
This whole time argument doesn't really hold water. Look at Morrowind or the classic Thief games. Gotta be something else than just timing of mod tools.
of course it holds water, if there arnt players what are the point of making mods, especially if the game wasnt focused on it, it probably didnt help that it wasnt easy either
@@ResonantRTS Completely disagree. Look at every other older than dirt titles and their modding communities. Still active after many years. A solid mod could reinvigorate any game. M&B proves that, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, L4D2, so on and so forth. How are the modding tools that Kingdom Come provides? Are they accessible and easy to use? How modular is that title? That would have a more pronounced impact than a small amount of time passing.
@@ResonantRTS you also should ask the modders and maybe the developers why the game is lacking in mods (might be the nature of the game or just community thing)

it's an amazing game and it did what it set out to do, no need for every one of these games to have a modding community that keeps it rolling for 10 years i'd say - so your point are valid, but still, why should that bother anyone
Mod tool need to be released at release or given before release to trusted people(then at release for the rest).
Well I really hope their next game is a bit more sandboxy and has modding support early. We have been waiting a long time for their next game.
I said this to myself, that if KCD modding community doesn’t provide an Assassin’s Creed inspired armor, and only just retexture existing outfit to be more stealthy, then don’t expect the community to go any higher than having patches, unlimited saving, bow aim tweak, etc.
This game is the perfect style for a ASOIAF game.
Tbh this game need the "Unofficial patch" like skyrim and fallout usually need. A samll bugfixing and anti quest breaking. Plus some quest enhancement and what to do if some requirement not fullfilled bcs one of npc died or dissapeared. If they dont bother fixing it, modders should do it. And to be honest their game more polished than skyrim today lol
honestly i feel like your understating the capability of a modding community it'll just take longer if a dev doesn't put out modding tool for a specific situation.
but maybe it's just me being someone on the outside looking in.
Hopefully KCD2 will have mod tools, I would love to see that Seven Kingdoms mod completed.
The only mod I would want is one that gets rid of the weird clothing that some of the nobles wear and replace it with something more accurate.
I really honestly think that the fact that the game was such a complete package there was no needs for major mods. This game was brilliant on its own with a few good mods. Let it be what it is. It’s a testament to great game design. It stands on it own. I think you’re making hay.
Lmao nice joke
nah people wanted to mod the hell out of this game. its just by the time they got the tools it was too little too late

Is there any way to extract game models (foliage) to 3d app right now, with released modding tools or is it still impossible? Anyone knows?
honestly, the modding tools came out way too late for it to have a thriving modding scene. that and bannerlord released a few months after the tools dropped, and it was built from the ground up with modding in mind. its a similar game just significantly easier to mod, so why would they wanna stick to modding kcd

the combat realism mod looks cool but installing mods is a total pain
One of my my favorite midevil games of all time and it will never get old for me and I don't mod it at all
I don't know. The focus on realism to the exclusion of everything else seemed to carry through to the modding and one thing a healthy modding has is the ridiculous. KC:D seemed against that kind of thing at it's core. It's through the ridiculous that normal mods also get made.
we have good chances for a kcd 2 so lets hope that one has better modding!
This is a spot on take. I've subbed to you based on this mate. Nice one.
I agree. They need mod community to develop it further. 👌
everything makes sense but i do not agree that its because of its single player that it was harder to mod it because many already finished the game because as we can see skyrim modding is still alive and well
This needs a fantasy mod badly.
What a nice coincidence! I was thinking about this game today.
I think a reasonable approach would be what they did with GTA 5. A single player world like we have now and a seperate experience that you can play online or alone.
Only mod I have installed was a cheat mod so I could fly.
They need to make a 13th century england version of this game. Or.
