The irony that the boss went undercover to see if there was a way to increase production, but he wasn't even able to keep up with the current standard he set.
I worked at a factory. When you reached a goal, they would raise it. If you hurt yourself they made you think it was your fault because YOU were going too fast! Factory work is not for "the faint of heart!"
I worked in a plastic plant when I was 20, all most running the whole 12 hour shift, short handed every shift and they got mad if you would not work overtime to cover the next shift.
lol doing a box every 40 seconds - that's some soul killing work lol its amazing that that woman can be so cheery in the job she and the employees like her deserve a lot more than they get that's for sure
I did something similar some years ago. When you do repetitive work very fast, you almost get high, it's like meditation. Either that or it was the surrounding air that was saturated with solvents and other chemicals... uh... where was I? Ah, yes: keep your fingers off my booze!
WELL HAHA HE WASNT FIRED, NOR WAS HE INEFFICIENT, AS HE WAS UNTRAINED HE DISCOVERED THAT THIS FACILITY NEEDS BETTER TRAINING.... DIDNT YOU WATCH THE WHOLE EPISODE?
I love how everyone is like the guy that fired Gary should be fired for not being understanding. When Gary is the one that set the impossible greedy standards in the first place isn’t that right gary
I can tell you have never worked a job like this before nor any job where a manager is your "boss" Manager's make their own rules and their own standards.
not really , you wouldn't get fired from 3 hours off work and not hitting targets my company offer 6 weeks before you get fired but they have to see improvement , some people are not cut out for picking and packing lines , some are
@King Skyline I agree. I don't think he went into the job trying to exceed expectations. I think he made those failures on purpose to see if they'd find them or just let them go. I think the company should have given him a longer time frame to improve his speed on packing. There should have been a verbal warning, then a written warning, and then dismissal. But it's America, and I live in the UK. Also, warehouses have different rules to dismissal...I think!
What consequence? I’m sure this boss is absolutely thrilled by what he found. His line seems very efficient. His employees love their jobs and say it’s a good company to work for, and the supervisor cuts dead weight fast and doesn’t let poor performers slip through the cracks. I’m sure he was absolutely ecstatic later on the conference call with the board.
The fact that he was fired after only one day is astounding. You can't expect a new person to be perfect, especially on their first day. Just says a lot about the company itself in my mind
The ones that don't get fired do just fine on their first day. There are plenty of good people out there who can do the job and then there are those who can't. The company weeds out the failures fast. That's just being smart. The ones who aren't fast enough need to find jobs where they can be slow.

I totally agree ! Some companies lose potentially great employees because they expect too much in a short time frame and then wonder why they can't get or keep employees . But the biggest issue I have noticed is companies won't hire enough people to do the jobs .
That's why I hated Urban Outfitters. The job was similar to this company. I was overworked and underpaid. My company made us work 7 days a week, 70 hours. Never gave us days off and violated their contract

This is exactly how it felt working for Amazon as a temp. Almost every shift some stranger was walking up to me with a sheet of paper nitpicking at my pace and I was only 2 weeks into working there. After 3 months I left. It just felt ridiculous. I’ll never work these type of jobs again
Same here. I used to work for Shasta beverage company as a temp. They had me in the lines putting the different type of sodas in one tray that they can be shipped. I got bullied on my first day because I wasn’t going fast enough and I understand that I had to go fast and reach the numbers I was trying to keep up with everyone who has been longer then me. From each passing day it got harder and harder for me to work with the other temp’s because they think that they are the bosses and real employees of the company. I only accepted the job because I needed money and they were paying me good. Like i said I was getting tired of working with them with the constant bullying and hostile work environment from the assistant managers everyday. When I complained to him about the bullying they didn’t even fire the people but just had us sit in in a room together and talk about the problems that we had. Then one day when we tempts had to poor out the bad and expired soda we had to take off the bottle caps and poor them down the drain. But my hands was starting to get hurt and when I took off my gloves . Then I had blisters and they were some blood from twisting the bottle caps. Then I tried to take a short break from twisting because I was dealing with some pain in my hand and then guys said to me “aren’t you gonna help or just stand there” so when he said they I got mad in my head and then I showed the guy next to me my hands on why I stopped for a bit because of my hands and the guys understand why I couldn’t. So they let it slide unlike the other guy. Then fast forward on my last day the same temp guy who had a fit with me with the soda bottles me and him were put right next to each other on the line to put the sodas in the trays. So the guy he was complaining that I was trying to make it hard for me to put his spas in the trays but I didn’t see an issue because I was putting my case of soda that was much easier for me to be faster but he didn’t like that. I tried to explain to me “so what that is your problem not mine” then he got pissed off and I can tell he was a hot head. On the last straw he got me so mad that I decided to punch him with the soda cans and luckily there was a barrier between me and him and the soda exploded right in his face 😂 haha. Right there I got calmed and I had a feeling it was my last day. So one of the temps from a different temp agency who also bullied me tried to calm both of us down. Then we talked to the lead and then the lead talked to one of the assistant managers and then the assistant manager came out to talk to me without hearing my side and told me to go but I tried to explain to the manager but this is my last opportunity for this agency and if you could only hear my side of the story on what has been going on, but nope he wanted me out and then I said some bad words to him and then the manager wanted to fight me because I said to him “fuck you colonizer” because I was frustrated at this point that he didn’t want to hear my side like all of my formal bosses in the temps agencies. So I know what I had to do and not fight him and then I ran up to the stairs and to get my bag and run as fast as I can to get out of there that I can get to my car and drive back home. My lesson was from this is to never apply for a temp agency ever again because people are cruel to me and not cruel to others when I’m trying to make a living and make Some money. The job was an 8 hour shift Monday-Friday 1pm-9:30pm but my shift they wanted us to stay over time because we weren’t hitting the numbers of pallets that we are supposed to hit by the end of the shift. Some days I didn’t stay over time because I didn’t want to be around them.
I worked at Amazon in the UK for two weeks. I left because the supervisor spoke to me like dog shit over a toilet break. It's not OK to have every aspect of your work micro managed and a sure way to lose quality employees (not that people who stay in such places aren't quality themselves).
To be fair, they were in such a mad rush to hit those standards that they barely had time for first time hellos, let alone a long private explanatory firing.
So true . And humiliating ! The manager should have asked him if he could stay and extra 30 minutes after work and have him pack 10 boxes slowly while he watched . If he can get it right slow , he can get it right a bit faster the next day . An explanation WHY the company is so picky about the way things are packed would have helped too . The newbie definitely looked motivated but perplexed by the speed of action . Fired on the first day sucks
He didn't even get to the part where he could ask them before an emotional story, he was just fighting for survival. Which is arguably more interesting.
My God, I could never imagine having some supervisor come up to me and tell me i'm not doing enough units per hour, and that I need to pick up the pace. I feel bad for people that work these types of positions, I really do.
What about the company where they assemble parts for the so beautiful dress like (academy award in Hollywood) the employees get $ 2.00 per hour and the manager sell that dress $35 000.oo per dress in Hollywood ? They didn’t expect him to be as good as her…. She can pack 150 an hour. They expected gradual improvement from him. Also…. He made the standards and even wanted to increase the efficency even more.
She said she can pack far more than the standard was and they didn't expect him to hit it right away. That being said the owner probably never worked in similar job or it was very long ago so he didn't have the required starting base to get on the level as fast enough. That doesn't mean the standards are set high, they are just set for people who are skilled and experienced in similar work already. He was simply fired because they didn't see any potential in him.
You just have to start it on one side and stretch it all the way out without it touching the top, and then force it down in one motion. The last time I moved, I got into the right rhythm pretty quick. Some workers will pick this stuff up super quick, under an hour. Other people will struggle all day. Those are the people who will continue to struggle no matter what, although not to the same degree.
He asked for improvements by the hour and the position was seasonal. Super important that they don't spend too much time on one employee. Also hilarious that if that's a problem, the guy getting fired is responsible for that culture.
I’m glad to hear the employee training him doesn’t just do packages all day, despite her high count. The repetitive motions could lead to injury or chronic conditions. What a great employee!
I have worked in a place like this. Fast pace on the 1st day. Not giving them a chance to build up there speed and to grow. And when the company says why there are no workers is because you probably lost a good worker that didn't mature too it and are now at another job making it the best of it.
I worked at the Walmart distribution center for 3 years as an order filler. If you were to follow the proper steps and technique as presented in the training video it was impossible to meet production. In order to reach production you had to be unsafe and cut corners or cheat. They knew this too. But if you got caught doing this they would reprimand you. It’s stupid.
Walmart dc got rid of me because I injured myself on my day off and had dr notes stating I needed to be out of work several days . . . My injury happened at my house. . . 🤡

So many companies lose good employees because they won’t allow them to train, learn the job correctly and develops speed. You better fire anyone who can’t get the production done immediately.
All true, but in this case the new employee is in a “competition” with other perspective business people for a cash prize. So the supervisor was asked to hold the undercover boss to a standard for “the competition”
@@UNABRIDGED_SCIENCE I know it’s scripted but my statement still stands. Companies will pressure new employees to run production on their first day. They just lose a potentially good employee just for the companies own ego.
@Larry Dicus of course, it's scripted! No sensible business owner of a huge company (correct me if I am wrong!) No one would just partake in a television show like this without the comfort of a script! The failures on the parcels, I think, were intentional. I believe he was testing his own staff. I think he was trying to see if the company would find his errors. The boxes looked symmetrical, so labelling on the bottom didn't seem to be any different...well, not to me! I just think out of common courtesy, the time frame in the dismissal was unfair.
This makes me feel way better about my job at a pharmaceutical plant. My trainer(s) were super patient with me and broke down everything to where I could understand it easily. I wasn't pressured to reach a certain standard, and was able to get where I am now because of that. And instead of immediately dismissing someone because of their performance issues, I try to work with them and find solutions to problems they might be facing. If even after all that and they still struggle, I suggest to try a different trainer with a different approach to see what works.
The lady who was training him was very good and understanding. She said “don’t panic, take a deep breath”. She should be the manager. @sparkyguitar Difficult skill, no. Quota required on day one...that's asking a bit much. The turnover rate must be extreme. The turnover would push people away from wanting to work there. @Samuel Deter I have more patience on the productivity side than I do on the quality side. I have little patience when it comes to egregious safety violations. I’ve let people go on the first day for trying to operate equipment that’s been locked out/tagged out. For quality, I won’t consider writing someone up until at least their fourth day and same with productivity, except after two weeks. I expect them to be up to speed in about four weeks and, if productivity is their only issue and I see them making an effort, I try to find them a spot in another department as opposed to firing that person. However, if that person is in their third department due to productivity issues, I inform them that this isn’t the job for them. Yes, they’re fired, but I will provide a positive reference in that case and won’t contest an unemployment claim if he/she was there long enough

There expectation from the owner he's just doing his job and holding up the standards. Keep in mind this boss want to increase production speed when he can't even meet his own standards. Everyone in his company deserved a raise after that.

This shit happens all the time. Not even in an industrial setting. I was written up for not finishing stocking at Walmart even though the unloading crew dumped 3 extra pallets in my aisle to stock. I was written up for simply commenting, "What?!" when I was in the Electronics department stocking and they dumped 2 extra pallets in my aisle and told me to pick up the pace. Well, actually the write up might have been for the follow up when I was threatened with a write up I just said, "Wow." Yo! Off to the office! You're being written up! Tried working unloading crew and had these high school kids in there. One pulled a switchblade on me and joked about cutting my arm because he thought it was fucking hilarious. After he had his laugh, I report it and management didn't do jack shit. Next time I worked with the kid and he did it again, I told him go ahead and try it. We'll see which one of us bleeds from our mouth and nose while kissing the floor. I'm normally a non-violent person, but when you're working with people that are psychotic and a company that you can't ever win a lawsuit against, then you have to toughen up and be prepared to defend yourself.
Any company that would allow that to go on, shouldn’t be in business. Being threatened at knife point is something that needs to be dealt with immediately. I’m sorry you had to be put in that position. Our society has gone crazy. Just my opinion.
You want to give the guy a full week and another day and a half out of the next week to figure this stuff out? I spent 37 years in management. The guy that fired him is a butt and if I was his boss I would fire him. It takes a while to get the hang of these things. You got to be patient and work with people. I had a 160 women work for me one time. It was one of my better jobs but there was never a dull moment. I took care of them and they worked hard for me.
Just curious but why would you fire him? It's more than likely that the standards that the supervisor used have been established by hire ups including the undercover boss. If the supervisor works in this manner one would think HR would be aware of the turn over rate. If this supervisor works likes this independently then it's a company and cultural failure if one, he's never been spoken to or 2, he's been spoken to and has been allowed to continue in this manner. This failure falls on the undercover boss, the uper management team and company wide training needs to be established.
You don't have to work with people that show you they don't have potential. IF, you are trusted enough by management to hire and fire. You didn't have that trust or you were not really concerned with company success and profits. If you had 160 women, you knew only a few And they reported their likes and dislikes to you, so you worked for them to keep things moving along. This is just because you said you would fire the man looking out for the best interest of your company and the quality of the people in your care-- the crew, your crew. You didn't babysit all those people yourself.
The shift supervisor is only following what his boss expects (company policy) if he doesn’t do his job then he gets fired that’s called a no win situation
that is unacceptable to fire somebody on their first few hours .. I’ve worked in packing/shipping, and now as a foreman in a production shop, the first thing I’ve always told my new hires take your time to learn the skill and perfect it then we will work on speed.. Id rather have an employee that isn’t at a pace to injure themselves, that perfected the skill, than to set a quota that not only could injure the employee or costs the company money for screwups.. I also found that instead of saying job or station , whatever, that calling each thing a skill makes people want to set a personal best goal
Funny the greed from the top though, he says he was there seeing if there was a way to improve production and then seen new workers had little chance keeping up with the pace they were demanding
Happened to me at UPS. I was unloading extremely fast to the point even faster than vets. Then my manager told me I had to move even faster - - like seriously? I’m already one of the performers plus I already work at FedEx at the time during peak so clearly I’m a professional. One day my shift manager got bad upset because I was “late” but I was already 10 minutes early doing stretches and clocked in on time (He was late). I expressed multiple times that I need a badge so I can prove I clocked on time like you said and I even stick after shifts to help him. Just because your life sucks, don’t make mine suck.
when people arent performing well then the manager is getting scolded and then Dm is getting yelled at and then the regional manager is getting scolded. Its a whole chain effect. Best to cut them off to save your own job
This was literally the standard the CEO himself set. And he went undercover to see how they can INCREASE production, the greed is unfathomable. The manager is just following the expectation Gary himself set
Whenever "learning" a new welding process, I'd always say, "I've never done it, but I can learn how the job needs it to be done." They love that stuff.
I have trained dozens of people in the retail/ rental business and I always made sure they had a good grip on basic knowledge of the job before I put them on a register and then I either had another employee stand with them or I did. I got a part time job at Michael's. I was put with an employee who after ten minutes and 3 customers later decided to go on break. She told me to watch another employee who said to me I just started so I'm not telling you nothing. After another 10 minutes the supervisor asked me if I was ready to be on a register yet and I told her no so she sent me back to the art department to learn go backs with my original trainer. The next day they gave me a basket of go backs from what they call the floral dept ( wilton, wedding ,seasonal etc) but no scanner to tell you location. So if employees at some of the major chains look like they don't know what they are doing most likely it's not their fault.
They don't want to waste their money on training new employees do you want them to pick up the job so quickly if not they just get rid of them. Unfortunately this is how it goes everywhere because profit is the most important thing nothing else.
This is giving me horrible flashbacks to when I would do this kind of work and frequently have a supervisor approach me to tell me that I need to pick up the pace. That always made me so incredibly anxious, and it didn’t help that I would have so much trouble staying in these jobs due to being ‘too slow’.
It amazes me that the owner can't do the job he requires of his employee. I then wonder what his performance is like as the CEO. I also wonder if this company is still in business.
I never understood why people are always so surprised by this. Being a CEO is it’s own job with its own skill set. I wouldn’t expect a CEO to know how to do every job everyone at the company needs to do. That’s not the skill set they have. I would expect him to know how hard the jobs are though. That’s what made undercover boss successful a show. CEOs underestimating their workers.
@@Harryacorn2 you’re right a CEO has its own skill set. Sitting in meetings, setting overly high expectations, cutting costs that shouldn’t be cut, and receiving 100 or more times the average salary of the normal worker. And woman can't perform at anything not even the kitchen anymore. Dude sold for over 2bil while you watch this stupid game TV show he is profiting off of. Hilarious
This is why I hated my job at Urban Outfitters. I was working in a warehouse like this, the boss overworked us and underpaid us. Never gave us days off and wanted us to be perfect. The managers punished us for making errors. How could we be perfect if we're working 70+ hours a week and not getting days off that we deserve! This is why I've never gone back to a warehouse job!
Simple. Alot of bosses just see you as a resource that can be replaced easily. Plenty of people after jobs. They work you hard, complain about everything, rarely listen. Once you are gone you are forgotten. Onto next worker. But not all bosses are aholes.
@@stevendriver661 what you just said is true. That's exactly what Urban Outfitters was. I also felt like the CEO was just trying to make more money off us. Like you said the leaders didn't care that the workers hated the company nor complain about being overworked
Go to a factory under a union, corporations hate them because it's a group of worker getting together and saying they won't sign a contract to work for the company unless they take the shit that has harmed the workers seriously and so they've taught us to blindly hate them but they're like democracy in a contract, your peers have had happenings under corporations and have gotten together to stop it from being a reality. They know that and love the power not having you negotiate your contract gives them, so any place under a union will be up front about what days you will work, how overtime is handled, what rate you're guaranteed for overtime, how many days of sick leave you get without being fired, and even the days you get off in a given year due to what holidays your union recognizes as a whole. You can't be removed meaninglessly and any change to your employment is guaranteed by the union, meaning you can't just be laid off, an agreement must be met. Factories and warehouses aren't the problem, it's the toads running them that hate you being able to complain and get away with it. They're used to replacing a squeaky wheel, being held accountable and required to fix the wheel rather than just move on has made many unionized workplaces legitimate havens for earning both monetary and social credit.

We're even about to be discussing another contract for the USW here soon, so there may be even more addressed grievances and better working conditions than even what we're tasting now thanks to them... But seriously, don't let the suits get you twisted about unions. They're your peers as a group talking about issues you have too. @@gblargg So you're not willing to address my hypothesis that you are simply making shit up then? Lol. Sure, I'll bite. There are many instances where a person doesn't instantly click with something. As a personal example, I studied electrical engineering in college and my senior year, I took a course in C++ programming. I really struggled with this class despite doing well in BASIC programming in high school and Pascal programming my sophomore year. I had been writing programs since I was maybe 12 years old but C++ really didn't click with me. Fast forward 5 years and I was a senior software engineer writing high performance, real time drivers in C++ and was considered to be one of the best young programmers in the company. I then went to work for a multi billion dollar a year company and "mentored" some older engineers in some various concepts of object oriented programming with C++ and brought a new way of thinking to the team. Had this manager's philosophy been imbued onto me via my professor, I would have failed the class (I think I gutted out a C) and told that I didn't have a future in programming. I would then have missed out on a successful and lucrative career and the various companies that I have worked for would have missed out on an excellent engineer. A job like in this video takes time to develop the muscle memory required to perform the same repetitive motions over and over, day after day. Expecting people to be meeting a rather high minimum quota within hours is ridiculous in my opinion. Given a day or week to get into the groove, this individual could have been a machine and cranking out their highest volume but he was never given a chance to succeed. I believe it to be a failed model. The company wastes time interviewing the candidate, on boarding them, checking references, filling out paperwork, etc. and then fires them after 3 hours? Silly.

If the CEO wanted to increase the production then he needs to set up a proper training officer who will explain how to do it quickly, just showing someone couple of times isnt nearly enough. New worker needs to work side by side by someone who knows and can verbally explain how its done and why you do certain moves. I started on making boxes in meat factory and first day I did like 10 boxes while the guy showing me did 3 times as many. 1 week later I was doing more than he did but wouldnt be if he didnt show me, there are tip[s and tricks about every job. 6 month later I was working on a band saw and learning knife work. Nothing is more efficient than real time lesson.
You are right, but the problem here is that the managers have a very tight agenda because of the ridiculous demands of the greedy owners. So the managers don"t have enough time to invest on people who don't show potential. The owners won't be comprehensive if the factory is short of workers or if it has a lot of newbies, the production fee will remain the same, even if the employees have to stay late to meet the production goal. I worked in a similar company, trust me, your comment is not wrong but in the real world most company owners don't think the same as you do, they couldn't care less.

Man, they're harsh. I do the same exact packing at Amazon. But we wear gloves, we don't use that kind of pain in the butt tape gun, and they work with you a lot if you're struggling. We have 3 days of a training period where someone is always trying to help with whatever we need. Good lord.
yeah that's so stupid, no company should have type of expectation, especially your first day of course you are going to be nervous and not know how to do things to the best of your abilities, everybody needs time to improve with anything.
I worked for UPS in a non-union position for 3 years back in the 70s. Rank and file employees soon learn they can never meet expectations, no matter how proficient they are. Managers are purposely trained to tell their subordinates they aren't performing up to par in order to drive them to constantly push harder and harder and it's never enough. Finally had enough of it; told them what I thought on the way out, vowed I'd never again work for someone else - and haven't. By the way - UPS hasn't changed although the drivers (who are union) don't get as much heat as the nonunion folks.
I worked in a UPS warehouse & unloaded trucks. They wanted us to unload 3 trailers a day. This was during a 5 hour shift. One day after I finished my 3 trailers. I had to use the bathroom. The supervisor tells me that he needs me to unload another trailer. I tell him that I'm going to use the bathroom first. He tells me to unload the trailer first. Some back & forth arguing starts. Then he tells me "If you go to the bathroom. I'm going to send you home.". I told him to kiss my ass. I used the bathroom & left. I went back only to pick up my check. The station manager was there with my union rep trying to convince me to come back. I already had another job. So I politely declined.

I used to work at a Warehouse like this at Amazon. The Ambassador will be the instructor and will train Associates on a new process path. The period of training is usually 2-3 days with a grace week period of errors. There are problem solvers and they will come to you to assess the errors and if they continue to persist they will send a coach to retrain again. They don't out right fire you and they are just there to help you work properly. It's weird that this has happened. Probably scripted or because it's a different warehouse culture or some supervisor thing they had going on.
I always tell people it's hard to get fired for productivity at Amazon. Too many errors will get you fired, though. Still you can reapply 90 days later.
Yes, When the trainer said she would show Gary what to do for a "few minutes", then set him up to work on his own. I was going "wait, What?" That was Not enough training at all! And tell me if you need help..... Did not hear her say Any of that.
Low wage job that can be performed by most does not warrant a training center to be built and maintained just for the sake of helping people adapt to a new job. You do know the cost and effort involved in constructing a building of that sort, right? And the lady who was training would be the type of person they need actually getting the job done, not holding new peoples hands.

Do you know much many jobs it takes to produce a product? Even for a pencil, you need everything that goes into makes graphene, everything that goes into cut down and producing the wood, and plenty of metal-working and eraser production, glue production, and then an industry that takes all of those parts and puts them together and more work goes into engraving each one. Not to mention transportation. A leader's job is to lead his specific division, not be a lumberjack or work metallurgy, or process rubber. Expect him to do that well, not do all the other stuff well. The manager was unreasonable, but not because he because he couldn't do what they did. Same with the boss in the vid. With a squad leader or supervisor, maybe. But a degree of seperation more.
Years ago I was working for this company, I was asked to help another department assemble some boxes I'm not good at my hands, I failed at almost everything we did. Finally the day is over and the manager tells me never to come back again. The guy wanted so much perfection.
This is why I went to college to become a Computer Engineering Scientist, as I had to do that hard factory work and retail clothing work in high school. I would go home with sore feet and a sore back, making basketball. I wasn’t built for that type of work and realized that I had to find a way to go to college to learn a skillset. So, I put myself through college working as a correctional officer for tuition benefits. (Which is also very hard work.) My respect goes to anyone that works in factories, as the work is not easy. Also, I understand that not everyone working in a factory will have the opportunity to go to college and find easier jobs.
This is really a great comment. Sometimes you must do what you hate to do to acquire motivation to improve yourself. I worked lots of terrible jobs and knew that education was my way out. Also, if you ever get in a position of management, it's important to work under bad bosses so that you can be a better boss.
So, he was expecting perfection on the first day? I worked at Amazon back in 2011-2012 peak and it was similar like this. They didn't fire you because they still needed people packing, but when peak slowed down, there were mass firings. You would show up and your ID would no longer work and couldn't get it. I don't know how it is now but, I would imagine it hasn't changed much
Bet Gary is super happy with his manager for instantly firing him for being incompetent to not waste anymore resources on training and move onto someone who is able to meet the production quota. Not to mention, Gary saw other experienced employees exceeding the 90 boxes/hour quota so that shit probably getting raised for those increased profits. All he did was go in to make sure that management is meeting his standards by firing employees that show little promise and not wasting company money lol.
Unpopular opinion, I am extremely happy he got to see the other side of things. Hopefully he rethinks his strategy business wise. Many companies need to step in this guys shoes.

His tape roller is too tight, for one. Two, I've never heard of getting fired during the training process unless it's a safety concern. Ahh good ole tv shows, scripted reality.
That was ridiculous. Getting fired on a first shift because of not reaching a quota would be scummy. Any job I've done has always been work on getting it right, then work on speed. Guess I've had the privilege of not working for any company that had policies as this one.
@@ecstasyleech I think that's what they do, they get in your head and make you so angry at the made up scenario that you completely forget about the obvious cameras.
I'm kind of surprised they haven't figure out automatic box wrappers so the employees stand at a conveyor and just drop the item in the box as it rolls by. And all the wrapping and labeling is done by a machine. Build different size machines for different size boxes if you need. Amazon can build rockets for space, so you'd kind of think they could figure out how to design those box wrapping machines.
A really low tech solution is have division of labor a basic management theory from Plato 375 BCE or in 1690 AD by Sir William Petty. So one person assembles the box, one person fills the box and labels it and another person closes the box with tape.
They exist. used them in a factory i use to work in. they suck... about half the time id have to either re-tape the box, or re-set up the tape because it pulled off the cutting edge. Want to make alot of money, make a better version of it.
I would like to see one of these shows where the CEO or owner has some real stakes on the line when they go undercover.
My lesson was from this is to never apply for a temp agency ever again because people are cruel to me and not cruel to others when I’m trying to make a living and make

If you had 160 women, you knew only a few
And they reported their likes and dislikes to you, so you worked for them to keep things moving along.
This is just because you said you would fire the man looking out for the best interest of your company and the quality of the people in your care-- the crew, your crew. You didn't babysit all those people yourself.
No that's how employees get treated, day in and day out. Boss is incompetent.
The shift supervisor is only following what his boss expects (company policy) if he doesn’t do his job then he gets fired that’s called a no win situation
160 women? No men? Was that some sort of illegal sweat shop?
she genuinely seemed heartbroken when he came over to fire him :( like her eyes seemed so sad
that is unacceptable to fire somebody on their first few hours ..
Exactly, more important he didn't make the label mistakes and the boxes were fully secure. I'd expect 30 an hour day 1 and put it up by 10 a day.
Funny the greed from the top though, he says he was there seeing if there was a way to improve production and then seen new workers had little chance keeping up with the pace they were demanding
and the cameraman is solely there just waiting until the CEO gets fired
Happened to me at UPS. I was unloading extremely fast to the point even faster than vets. Then my manager told me I had to move even faster - - like seriously? I’m already one of the performers plus I already work at FedEx at the time during peak so clearly I’m a professional. One day my shift manager got bad upset because I was “late” but I was already 10 minutes early doing stretches and clocked in on time (He was late). I expressed multiple times that I need a badge so I can prove I clocked on time like you said and I even stick after shifts to help him. Just because your life sucks, don’t make mine suck.
How can they fire a guy like that on his first day? He's clearly trying his best and it takes time to get the hang of something new.
Some people learn faster than others, but the boss does see now how he was working his employees like a dog.
when people arent performing well then the manager is getting scolded and then Dm is getting yelled at and then the regional manager is getting scolded. Its a whole chain effect. Best to cut them off to save your own job
Someone's never worked in a factory lol
This was literally the standard the CEO himself set. And he went undercover to see how they can INCREASE production, the greed is unfathomable. The manager is just following the expectation Gary himself set
@@centralintelligenceagency9082 Not necessarily. CEOs usually don't micromanage.
Whenever "learning" a new welding process, I'd always say, "I've never done it, but I can learn how the job needs it to be done." They love that stuff.
The best employees are always going to be the ones that are willing to learn.
He’s learned a valuable lesson basically. Fire everybody and install robots.
These things are always so unbelievable. Zero chance they don’t know this is undercover boss by now. Camera crew and all.
Especially some of the "disguises" they wear. Ridiculous.
This is giving me horrible flashbacks to when I would do this kind of work and frequently have a supervisor approach me to tell me that I need to pick up the pace. That always made me so incredibly anxious, and it didn’t help that I would have so much trouble staying in these jobs due to being ‘too slow’.
I need to find the whole show to see Gary's reaction when he finds out that the guy he fired is the real boss.
Damn I was hoping he’d reveal himself as the boss and get their reactions.
It amazes me that the owner can't do the job he requires of his employee. I then wonder what his performance is like as the CEO. I also wonder if this company is still in business.
eBay acquired it for $2.4 billion in 2011, so I’m assuming he got a nice payday.
LMAO! You are funny lady!

They work you hard, complain about everything, rarely listen. Once you are gone you are forgotten. Onto next worker.

Also, those extra hours are at a set and discussed rate, can't be applied with less than 48 hours of heads-up, and don't have to count against your attendance or terminable absence record if you contact HR regarding your availability. We're even about to be discussing another contract for the USW here soon, so there may be even more addressed grievances and better working conditions than even what we're tasting now thanks to them...
Silly.
@@rhoonah5849 I'm surprised you've never heard of hypotheticals, or giving people the benefit of the doubt, where you DO imagine things that would explain their actions in a non-negative light (called giving them the benefit of the doubt).
It's taping a box.... lol.

Let's address a few things

Being a hypocrite doesn't mean you are not a leader, it's just means you're a hypocritical leader, but a leader nonetheless
now this point
" I’m just saying that true leaders are capable of doing exactly what they expect their subordinates to do"
NO , NOT TRUE EITHER
Leaders Lead, and as such they do not necessarily have to have the skills to do everything that the employee's can do
I can give you hundreds of examples and stories of people that started companies who were very good leaders and were very successful but didn't know how to do all the thing the employees could do
THE PROBLEM IS THIS
and let's be fucking real about this , ok
Most people are employee's and as such they get the shit end of the stick (i know, i've been one)
Employers don't have to push employees as hard as they do, but they do it because an employee's function in a company is to make money
NOW, HERE'S THE ISSUE
Obviously an employee is going to take this personally and have a problem with it (this is understandable)
Employee's also have a pre conceived idea of what an employer SHOULD BE
things like
An employer should be able to do everything the employee can do
An Employer should be able to do it better
An employer should be a REAL LEADER (of which we don't even have the definition) etc etc
Reality in business is...
YOU MAKE MONEY THROUGH LEVERAGE
Leverage of Time
Leverage of Money
LEVERAGE MEANS........ (as one example) Hiring those that can do things exceptionally well that YOU CAN'T DO YOURSELF
but your job as a business owner is TO MANAGE THEM AND THEIR PERFORMANCE
to say an employer should know everything an employee knows or can do completely defeats the purpose of leverage and the ability to amplify income
if that were the case business would be very limited
I understand your point, but that's not the case mate
NOW THE POINT IS THIS
The o.p. made the statement (Sarcastically) that the company set a standard they themselves couldn't achieve
Obviously he's an employee
Obviously he's hurt
Obviously He's venting frustration and opinion
I GET ALL THAT
My point is, IT'S INCORRECT
now you see , if i disagree on a forum full of employee's i'm going to get ridiculed, As has happened.
I'm not the bad guy, I'm just pointing out a mistake
THIS IS CALLED FALSE LOGIC
it's when something logically sounds like it's correct but it's not in actual fact.
Employee's are such because they think a certain way
Business owners are what they are because they think another way
and how you think defines the comment you will type up
I'm not arguing, I'm just showing you guys your mistake
The question is, WILL YOU UNDERSTAND IT

Same here. Like don’t leave us hanging .
@@loveobviously I'd like to see him reveal himself to the manager guy. I mean he even apologized to the manager for getting fired. That is messed up.
as soon as the supervisor ignored him asking how he was doing i knew he’d be terrible😢
I would like to see one of these shows where the CEO or owner has some real stakes on the line when they go undercover. Every single one of them knows that no matter what happens, they will be fine and are in control at the end of the day. How do you think they would act if they lost their job or control of their business if they get fired like this while undercover? Maybe then they would actually develop some real empathy and understanding for their employees
No No ! That is sooo wrong! Train, train train ! Practice, practice practice. That's the key, go back and ask them how long did it take them to reach that number? I am a very good and hard worker and when I see someone who is mistreated because they are not good yet or not fast enough , that frustrates me to no end . I don't think I would ever want to work at a place like that , that just gives up on you like that! Not the company for me !!
Yeah seriously fuck that place and that guy.
I worked in a builders, a small works department, and he always said that he wouldn't expect the men to do things that he couldn't do. I always respected him, he was a fair boss.
Hmm he having trouble packing boxes and he wants more packed boxes down the line
The fact that he didn’t just emulate what she was doing shows how ignorant he is to think he could pack as fast. Every shot he’s fumbling the box in a different manner but Every time she made a box she’d always put her hands in specific places and make the box in a few swift movements. Just baffles me that people don’t know how to move.
I guess that’s why he’s CEO, because working with hands is not for him. Also the anxiety played a role, since the cameras, situation and no prior long term experience with manual labour.
@@casimirkylian3703 If I was the packer I would simply inform him to copy my hand placement exactly. Just grab his hands and move him in the right order
@@randallradke1279 yeah, well, let’s say there have been mistakes on both sides
