This CEO is really trying to make a difference, and doing that for this young man is an incredibly generous and kind thing for this CEO to do. He just needs to be very careful WHO he does this for. If the stores are run well, they will be a great representation for Baja Fresh. Great job and story all-around.
Giving away things is generally bad for the next quarter's earnings. But in this case, it's probably great for the quarter's earnings a year from now. Sadly, Wall Street doesn't value that kind of timeline nearly as much.

Please bring Baja Fresh to Australia. Our selection of Mexican restaurants is pretty bad. In this episode the food looked awesome, I think you would make a killing here. I also found it interesting the franchise fee was only $50,000. Here a Subway has a a $250,000 fee and a McDonald's is nearly 1 million.
FYI, this show aired back in 2011. Baja Fresh was starting to expand quite a bit in the USA in the early 2000s. Wendy's purchased them in 2002 for $275 million USD. at and then sold them in 2006 to an Investment Group for only $31 million USD. So after Wendy's purchased the company seems to have not grown it successfully. I didn't see much growth in stores in the D.C. area after about 2005. Out of the 6 stores or so I knew of in the Northern Virginia/DC area, only 1 still is open to my knowledge in 2022. I still make the 40 mile round trip every 2 months or so to go get some Baja Fresh. Chipotle put much more effort into expansion and advertising, which seemed to have really hurt Baja Fresh's growth as seen by the drastic loss of nearly $250m that Wendy's took in only a 4 year ownership. Baja Fresh has always been much better than Chipotle, and they cook the food to order, not scooping steamed meat out of a stainless food bin. I remember seeing the little Signs they had up in Baja Fresh's in 2002, saying they were "being purchased by Wendy's, but our quality/etc is not changing". I did not personally see that as a good sign at the time. Most big corporations are horribly run and eventually focus solely on profit and remove any quality. I can't eat at McDonald's anymore. It used to be so good back in the 80s/90s. Now everything is made in those steam trays and the bread tastes like Styrofoam. Baja Fresh still produced/produces great quality food, unfortunately they just lost a lot of stores in the past 15 years.
Thanks for explaining this, it's also really sad. Jose was definitely someone who deserved this, I don't see people working as hard as he did very often. I wonder where he is now? I love Mexican food and when you find a good restraunt you should stick to it. I understand why you make the journey, the only good Mexican food near me is an hour away, but I make the journey. Unlike the USA here in Australia we don't have many people of Mexican heritage and it's a real shame. Any Mexican comming here could make a ton of cash selling Mexican food. The restraunt I go to charges $30 ($24usd) for beef nachos, and we pay it. It's not unusual for food and drinks to exceed $100 ($75usd). Buy holy shit is it good, these guys that run the place smoke their own chipotle chillies and it's amazing. They cook everything in terracotta and it's got such a great flavour.
