- In this tutorial, I explain in details how I direct warp my Ashford rigid heddle loom. I wanted to share all my weaving knowledge and this is why I tried to include as many tips and insight as possible. For example, I explain my advices to achieve better tension throughout a project. I also present to you my set up for direct warping horizontally. Finally, I show you how to wind the warp onto the back beam if you are alone.

I did your method on my last dishcloth project. So much easier than the vertical peg that comes with the Ashford loom.

@@Curly_n_Yarny yes. I’m still learning. Only been weaving about 6 months. I’ve found that weaving is the easy part. It’s the warping that’s the trick. Your method will solve some of my warping problems, I know

Great Video! I was struggling to think of somewhere in my home to set up my loom and something to attach the peg to that would have enough space to warp a long project. But watching your video....I have that same exact stepladder! And a long hallway, and a stand for my loom! Just need to think of a way to maybe weight down the loom stand. But I will make it work!!!

I use a bag of cat litter. The fine bentonite type. Even if you don't have cats, it can come in handy for messes...

Thabk again for a great video. Always good to see how a fellow weaver warps her loom! I was only thinking about the peg problem yesterday when I warped up with 8/2 cotton for some teatowels... I lashed the warp onto the front beam to get even tension but the outside threads were so much longer than the middle! Maybe I need the stepladder!

Thank you so much for this video. What a great way to ensure all the warp threads are the same length and avoid waste. The idea of using the cardboard strips attached to the paper is a genius idea- definitely going to try this next time! The tip on checking the tension on both the upper and lower heddle positions was another brilliant tip. I noticed that you didn’t knot the warp onto the front apron rod after you were happy with the tension…….does it never slip? Thank you. Your videos are so clear with lots of information for a new weaver. 😄
You are welcome 😍 I hope all those tips will help you! To answer you, no the knots I made on the front apron have never slip in my experience! At first, I used to tie them once and then tie them with bunny ears. But once I forgot and I realised it didn't change anything. So now I never do it 😅
I just got my first rigid heddle loom. I’m enjoying your video and the different approach to warping. I am researching to educate myself before my first attempt at a project. When you’re drawing the thread over the apron bar it looks like you’re alternating over and under every other time. Is that correct or am I just confused? 😊

Your warp and weft yarns are they 8/2?
Thanks to you! 😄 For this project, the warp is actually 4 threads of thin acrylic yarn twisted together to make one thicker thread. But, I do wove other projects with 8/2 for both warp and weft 🧵
At 22:23 in the video does it matter that you’re pulling the threads to the side while winding them on rather than holding them straight out in front? I notice the threads farthest from you are longer because of this and wondered if that could possibly affect the tension.
There’s these double end spring clamps great for holding warp rod

Thank you for this great video. What causes the shed to be a "messy"? It great in the up position and a mess and doesn't have a space in the down position. Any tips would be grateful.
There are a few things that could cause that! There is one tip that I could give you and that works in most cases. The tip is to use a pick-up stick or anything similar to that. Then you would need to put your heddle in the down position. Slide the pick-up stick in the shed behind the heddle. Then slide the stick to the back beam. This should help with your tension in the down shed.

I have a question in regards to the length of your fabric. You said you want to have 2.5 m. Is that already calculating in extra for the beginning and end waste/fringe on the project? How much do you calculate for that?
Good question! For this project, I wanted to weave for about 2m and I consider that I will have about 50cm of waste yarn. I normally need about 25cm at the beginning to attach the warp to the front apron. Then, I usally have around 25cm at the end of the warp that cannot be woven. I hope this help 😊
So if you are doubling it, when warping you would pull a loop through both the slot and the hole on the heddle? I've seen several people mention it but I couldn't find any videos on how to "double" it exactly.

Hi! When you're weaving in scrap yarn, did you beat every row after the first two, or did you continue with only beating after two rows?
Hi! Good question 😊 I continue with only beating after 2 rows of scrap yarn. I do this until all the warp threads are evenly separated.

Easy, cheap, warping peg recipe: 1 flower pot big enough to hold 4lbs plaster of Paris, making sure any hole is plugged since plaster of Paris is added to water, not the other way around. 1 T -made from PVC, end caps and joints to assemble... Place T in prepared wet plaster of paris and let set a full 24 hrs before use! Enjoy!!!

Sorry c-clamps stick out at each end, they’re adjustable and can also spin into direction you want to hold whatever down

It would be nice if you could demonstrate the technique of warping onto the loom with tension so that one can get even tension without issues. I find that by myself it is more difficult than if I had someone holding the yarn. I am new to weaving so I am just getting the technique down. I find that you talk alot with demonstration, maybe if you could cut down on the talking and show us how you do it it would be helpful Thank you
