I was 14 in '95. That was such a great time for everything. Being a teenager in the 90's was something else and this movie reminds me of that. This movie has a special place in my heart.
The 90's were magical. We were In-between the old and the new. We got to experience the birth of the digital age! 🙌 We got to live both worlds at the right time as young people.
I do too, I am 46… it takes me back and I still get the chills… also the feeling of the end of life review you have when crossing over to spirit realm..
This movie literally turned me onto computers, hacking, and UNIX. UNIX led to Linux. Linux led to my career, hobby and my passion. As 'lame' as some see it, this movie whether they like to admit or not turned on a lot of people into the scene. It took some a while to catch up, but they got there. Thank you all involved.
The movie's interpretation of the computer scene at the time is the absolute pinnacle of personification of what I feel when I think of it - I am a programmer and I still think this movie resonates with me in such a special way... The soundtrack is magnificent.
Its not lame, it is kitschy. Like, exactly the kind of geeks who would know tech would know that monitors do not project an image of what you're watching onto your face, because light-scattering exists. But if you look past (a whole bunch!) of stupid stuff like that, the film behind it was really rather cool. And that's all that was needed to turn a lot of heads. :)
The thing is, as much as there were actual hacker tricks hidden in the movie, it was not a "how to" video. It was a movie that had a story, and "real" hacking is not as exciting as that. Boring screens of text...yay! Just enjoy.
damn i miss the 90's....the internet was so new, the possibilities were endless. i remember each time my modem dialed out, i would get alittle excitement. many nights using shell accounts over 56k. good times.
***** Just as I thought this montage and track couldn't get me more nostalgic, I read your comment. I remember discovering IRC for the first time in 1996, and I was blown away with the fact I could sit and talk to all these different kinds of people from around the world. I actually started out with a 14.4k myself :) - Good times man.
***** It was like a road trip adventure. You had more time and excitement about the journey. Now days it's just about the destination, we can't go to another state without a plane, while throwing a fit over the wifi not working...
After twenty years this is still the best hackers movie around. The punk feel to the period is great and authentic. Act of hacking is nicely depicted in inline videos which accurately transfer emotions from main characters to the viewer. Most of other movies about hacking tries to show you the actual "hack" which is ridiculous.
I always laugh when people say that this movie was "inaccurate"..... well duh. No one wants to sit and actually watch someone hack. It's incredibly boring. What people fail to notice is that while the graphics they used to represent the activities/virus'/screens/etc were entirely unreal, they actually did their research into the names of things. And there's a ton of easter eggs in this movie.
Dude, this movie made hacking look cool. It did more to the brand than anything before or after. And while using a lot of licencia poetica, it still looks somewhat believable, considering time period, and technology at the time. And the feel of freedom this movie gives is unmatched till this day.
Grew up in the 90s and missed it so much. Everything was simple gameconsoles and games where great, and to movies where great. Hackers seen the movie a damn lot of times. If I had a Time Machine I traveled back in time to enjoy the 90s again.

To think I haven't listened to it in about 10 years since I last saw Hackers is insane to me. While not as hopeful anymore and time had grown short, I still feel that magic when I listen to this song.
