The Princeton Dinky (in HD)

- The Princeton Dinky is the shortest scheduled commuter rail line in the United States - and one of its end points will be closing soon. Going from Princeton Junction, NJ to the campus of Princeton University, at 2.9 miles, it runs throughout the day between the two points, taking only five minutes to get between stops. However, the 1918 PRR station in Princeton NJ will be closing soon, and the station stop will be relocated almost 500 feet away. This is your last chance to get out and see this old, historic station - and BJVP was there to get video of not only the station, but video along the line as well. Enjoy this rare look at the Arrow III-powered Princeton Dinky!
lol who else thinks its just the cutest little train
It's basically a rip-off of SEPTA'S Cynwyd Line.
Dante Trainmaster it’s actually older
@@Ih8kone lol kinda true
look at the wee fella, trying his hardest
There used to be an intermediate station along the line called Penns Neck. It was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and closed by Penn Central in 1971.
Yea I saw it on Google earth
@@DelcoImagery Also, the overpass on Route Uno used to be a grade crossing.
I love its horn idk why. I always love to hear it when i visit pjs
For the engineer and the conductor(s), the job pays the bills. But, it has to be the most boring job on NJT.
I'd still take it!
I'd still take it.
Dante Trainmaster me too by the way
I'd do it
As far as railroading jobs, it seems pretty relaxed. You are familiar with the route, only 3 crossings, and no signals or other trains since...it's the only train ever on the line.
nice video! I first heard and saw the dinky on my pentrex DVD that covers the NEC from NYC to Washington DC and when it was showing trains passing Princeton junction it showed for a quick moment the dinky
Sweet!
I love the Dinky!!! While attending college there I used numerous times to get to Princeton Junction to get to my home in Jesup GA!!! Plus all the good wine they served onboard 😎
Awesome Wabco AA2 Horn!
This is rare HD footage of the line before they moved the Princeton station.
I would love to see scale models of the Arrow III railcars produced. They would be useful for modelling the Northeast Corridor. And of course, the Princeton Dinky.
Sweet!
I love that WABCO horn!
6:09 correct me if im wrong but is that the location of the new station being built?
I believe so - but I haven't been back there since I filmed this to confirm whether that's indeed the case. But I'm pretty sure that's where it is or was going...
@@Bigjimvideo The old station is actually still standing. It was never demolished.
Princeton and NJT did a wwonderful job building a new station with a Wawa store adjacent to the station for the convenience of the riders, staff and students who use the station.
True, but I was sad to see the old, historic station go.
They turned a landmark into another commercial cesspool, and now they want to get rid of the Dinky all together.
Well, the Wawa is a "thing of the region" (Philadelphia metropolitan area). I would not be surprised if it had a rustic facade comparable to that of a BK that was on campus in the mid-1980s
@@Bigjimvideo The old station was never demolished.
the portion that goes into the school yes
Love the horn!! What kinda horn is it?
The horn on the New jersey transit arrow 2 which the Princeton shuttle is married pair of uses A wabco AA-2 horn
also the horns would be louder if the blue muffling devices on front of the bells were detached
They are also used on SEPTA's Broad Street subway line. They also had those horns on the first 3 generations of Silverliners.
Do they only use arrow cars on the line?
Yeah, only the Arrow cars here.
@@Bigjimvideo SEPTA'S Cynwyd Line is basically a rip-off of the Princeton Dinky.
They really should be running 3-car trains.
Yeah, but the ridership just isn't there. Besides, run the two-car trains often enough, it makes up for not needing a third car.
They should double track this section of the NJT tracks
I don't think the volume of people riding the dinky is enough to justify a second set of tracks - during rush hours, this runs a fairly fast/tight schedule, and serves the university/town well.
daffylatke Oh okay. I remember one time we rode this part of the route all the way to NYP when I was little
And they should run 3-car trains.
Do you know why they want to demolish the original station?
+is1943 The people at Princeton University hate mass transit for some reason even though they have been located 500 feet away for almost 100 years now
+howardkevinm The station isn't owned by NJT but by Princeton University and has been since 1984.
@@ploopy5235 Princeton U is is idiotic.
what are the timings of thistrain as i have to go from princeton junction to princeton university
Every half hour on weekdays, and every half hour or hour on weekends (depending on the time of day)
@@Bigjimvideo nice to know as i will take a train from princeton junction train station
Can I use this footage in a short film I'm making? I already shot a scene with my actors inside the train but I forgot to get an exterior shot. It would be really great if I could be lazy and use this! I'll also put your name in the credits if you want.
No! All Copyright goes to Owner!!!
Thank you for asking, but I’ll have to decline. I appreciate you thinking of me though.
One time I rode the Princeton Dinky
Sweet!
Big Jim Video Productions I know it is
This train is not treated with the respect it deserves.
I'm not sure what you mean...

The dinky is the best
Do some with German electric trains!
I'd have to get to Germany first...
