I can’t think of one painting I liked more than Mary’s, but even more so, her dedication to capturing the beautiful old buildings that are disappearing. That deserves an OBE in my opinion.
A lovely documentary. As a 71 year young woman who paints portraits and lives alone I heartily agree with your mother. I never feel lonely, never bored. She is doing society a favour by putting on canvas the old buildings which developers are destroying.
I find it interesting that this documentary won awards but the RA still hasn't figured out that its subject (Mary, her paintings) is a national treasure.
she has a body of work that stands above the usual amateur and gets into the realm of great naive work.
You look at the Euston road artists and her work fits right it, not the she needs to be pigeon holed. Fantastic paintings

In the initial view each painting gets about 2 seconds before it's judged, then it's just all crammed in like a jumble sale... And still, about a third of the work is junk. Why would anyone use that as a benchmark of judgement.
This documentary is an absolute delight, and so is Mary. Her work is just lovely. As an older amateur artist myself, I could totally relate To Mary, her process, and her determination.

Not exactly, but they have the same "feeling" 😊...the beautiful lighting, a fresh morning..that 'all is well, all is good' ..that serenely blissful acknowledgement that we love and cherish our walks in life. And her son is a fantastic film maker!!
@@globalheart Oh! How odd that the feeling you get from Hopper is that 'all's well'!! I always feel the discomfort/emptiness/loneliness in his paintings, although I absolutely love them! But, yes! Mary's paintings make me feel exactly what you describe. And then I have this underlying "No, no!!!" at the thought that all of that is disappearing... and more's the pity as I, like her, treasure that world. And, YES!! Her son is a wonderful film maker!!

@@andreaandrea6716 Yes, i know, i know, lol !!! Hopper was all over the place really, but it was his grasping grip on the use of sunlight, that i was reminded of...his seaside paintings, walls or houses..but my dearest favorite is (think its called early morning, or 7am, something like that) is a painting of a rural storefront..a brright white facade, shafts of sunlight, a schoolhouse clock in the window well..and the forest beyond. No beautiful bricks though, not like Mary's!!! :)

It's a matter of taste. I think if Mary hated it, she would have said so! And probably would have respected her son's decision to choose what to use in his own work.

Mary's stamina & determination are remarkable. Her paintings are delightful a nb d necessary. I hope this film will her sales. I Can quite imagine many Londoners would be interested in her work.
Mostly, I'm thoroughly impressed with how she never lost sight of what truly motivated her. Choosing to paint over the years rather than endlessly watch series is in itself is a fantastic accomplishment.

Mary Cane-Honeysett is today’s Constable of Bricks and mortar. Bringing out for us to see our past history brought back to life in such perfect detail. Such a pity she was beset by so many problems to fight, which she did so brilliantly. A truly remarkable person.
She’s amazing!!! I started painting in my late sixties, Mary is an inspiration!! If for no other reason, do it for yourself!…. I would love one of her works!

I agree with Charlesscott. Why not show her work and allow crowd source to purchase some pictures? Why doesn't she have a website storefront decorated with red brick?
As a creative elder myself, at age 70 I also feel the tragedy of our rich architectural history being uncaringly destroyed, to be replaced with ugly bland homogenized condo boxes. Where are we headed as a species, when we destroy our culture and beauty - how will our cities look in 50 years? I certainly wouldn't feel inspired by living in a city like that.
I love Mary's tenacity, in the face of her beautiful art not being valued, honoured and celebrated.
And equally, I love her son's loving celebration of his mum, in creating this documentary. What a beautiful (and skilful) testament to love. So inspiring.

genrification of urban inner cities really has a lot to answer for. It not only in London. Im In Asia and have seen the decimation of fabulous cities like Bangkok, Hong Kong, most of China and Kuala Lumpur to name but a few reduced to ugly commercial monstrosities in the name of greed
it happens in all aof europe, not to mention Belgian, the disaster country when it comes to urban planning, the netherlands are a bir of the exeption to the rule. I hope europe wakes up and kicks the foreign investors with only profit in mind out

What a charming documentary. I'd never heard of Ms Cane- Honeysett before, but she obviously loved her part of London, and her style was certainly NOT naive! Her talent was accurately representing ordinary bare bricks and mortar, plaster, old traditional shopfronts, shop signs and wooden window frames, and all beautifully lit. These are historical records of a major World city, with an uncanny a sense of time and place, and a great eye for colour.
I found the fact that the RA CHARGE people to exhibit, but don't even invite you to attend if your work is not shown to be astonishing. I'm sure the King would be horrified.
The contrasting of the enigmatic and impenetrable works of the Summer Exhibition enfants terribles and Mary was a master stroke.

Well Iv'e been an artist for 50 years, I paint for pleasure only these days. I have done the awards shows and have been a judge and awarded best of show many times. I will be honest in saying I do not like the current trend of the new reaction art. All great painters have personal skills, personal likes & individual styles that create real emotions. True painter's are the Mary's of this world, they paint just for the pleasure and challenge. Mary I tip my hat to you, always remember that painting must please you only.... the rest is a bonus. Many thanks also to the doco maker for the realism wonderful work ⭐
I remember watching this doc when it first aired on PBS here in NYC, I loved it, and especially Mary. Her work was not at all 'naive', it's thoughtful and inspired, she had a true artistic spirit.
I know right, her art is definitely not naive, so precise and dimensional, unlike naive art.
Mary’s paintings were, beautifully painted, charming and especially desirable because they capture a history of London that is fast disappearing. I reckon she’ll be collectible down the track. Because the works are so eclectic, exhibitions are a poor gauge for excellence and rarely predict what will be loved now let alone into the future.
Mary reminds me of my two English aunts!

So glad you started capturing your Mum's art story before it was too late. It wasn't just that she painted her subjects well, it was her excellent choice of subjects. Seen the other doc and am so glad she eventually had a painting accepted.

This is the way to age, she has such an interesting life, full of new projects, nothing like a blank canvas to get your imagination going. And something to show for the time invested.
Bravo Mary Cane Honeysett. You and your oil painting are stars. I should love to be able to buy one of your works. The Royal Academicians who ever they are are short sighted and self serving. It is artists like you who are subsidising their art. I lived in Shepherds Bush for years and my GP husband loved these houses, shops and. market. We would drive around the street for hours while he pointed out the architectural intricacies with delight. I am a watercolour girl myself and I was envious of your wonderful draft watercolour. The public has no idea how difficult it is to achieve this in watercolour. It takes hours and days. Forget the RA. It is not for artists of your caliber. None of them have the technique to paint like you. Hope this video goes viral. I spent 15 months during Covid make a 20 minute video on San Michele in Italy, I had 1500 illustrations. It has received just 200 views so I know how you feel. The RA should make you an honorary member but you are a member de jura!.

I’m yet another new fan for Mary and her work - Great lady and an example to us all. Apart from admiring her work I also admire her spirit (and love her down to earth reaction to some of her son’s requests, putting her foot down in no uncertain terms… clearly knows her own mind and won’t be pushed!). When this era of art judges moves on, there will be new fashions, new tastes formed and I can believe that her work will then catch their eyes. A lovely hour spent in her company and inspirational too so thank you to Mary and her son for creating the film and putting it on RUclips!
I loved this warmhearted documentary of a woman tingling with life and energy. Her history alone of the 2nd world war would have been more than enough to hear. I loved her art and her affinity with brick and buildings. Her paintings are a history of a life past and passing. I really hope her work is accepted next year. Thank you for this delightful film.
I’m so glad she captured pre-corporate landscape when Mom and Pop businesses covered the streets and individual shops reflexes the owners choice of color and decor.

I went to the show 8 years ago for the first time and I found it very rich, varied and inspiring. I also think Mary’s painting is very good and she should have got in. 😊
Absolutely adored this film. I felt the highs and lows, but also the unwavering determination! My mother was also an artist. She didn't start painting until she was 50 years old. After seeing this, I wish I had taken time to document my mother's journey. She passed in 2016.
I love Mary and her artwork.. The love and dedication she puts into work reflects so much history of her surroundings and should be exhibited in my opinion. ❤

And some of the things they do pick are talentless gimmicks without any skill or artistry.
What a wonderful film about an amazing woman. I think Marys paintings are fabulous and would get the peoples vote any day.
Count me in as a Mary fan! She is perfectly delightful. She’s much more gracious than I. Her paintings clearly reveal her as an artist who possesses more skill and more heart than the majority of the painters (it would be a stretch to call them artists) whose pieces were actually selected. It’s like a page from the story, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’-everyone exclaiming their ‘Oooooos’ and ‘Ahhhhhhs’ as they pretend to SEE beautiful clothing on their king’s naked arse, only because they’re afraid they would be deemed unworthy of their station in life if they told the truth. It took a guileless boy to step forward and say, “The emperor isn’t wearing any clothes!” before the truth was finally exposed (pardon the pun).
And so dear Mary is right to be incredulous that the arse-naked emperor was chosen, while her vision and skill as an artist was overlooked…again.
This reminds me of a hilarious scene in the movie ‘Local Color.’ If you haven’t seen it, it’s on RUclips. Watch it, and you’ll see the scene I’m referring to. Oh, how I wish Mary could see it. She’d howl with laughter. 😉🎨
She has the delightful spunk of a true artist! I lived in an art colony as a teenager and she reminds me of so many of the artists there. It was so wonderful living there.
Love the paintings and you should do an exhibition of your work as I would love to see your paintings, maybe buy one too.

It's a wonderful thing what you have done as far as recording your mom and her work. What a treasure!!! I've only watched a short time of it so far. And what I have seen I love I agree with her about the buildings it's a shame that the destroying them but it is wonderful and a great treasure that she has painted them and done such a beautiful job of it.. oh yes indeed she's very very talented.... I don't know her history as far as being popular, but she should have been.❤.... she should have been very well known if she's not. I guess just being sort of hidden away she missed out on being famously known!! If she stopped she most certainly should have been! I haven't seen anybody that does any better work!!... thank you for sharing your mother and her beautiful work with us.. love love her work❤.. God bless her heart and bless her career before she so deserves it!!!!

2002, when this came out, seems like another time entirely………no doubt Mary would feel the same if she were still with us.
I really enjoyed this doc. Laughed out loud quite a few times. 😂 Mary’s art captures historical architecture, which at some point will be lost. Her paintings are historical snapshots of London’s landscape. I would be PROUD to hang her work on my walls. The artworks hung on the RA gallery walls are mostly hideous. I did see a few that I liked, but very few. Some looked as though a 2 year old painted them. Not really sure. “What the heck,” went through my mind. Please, give this wonderful lady her own website to display and sell her art. Please don’t waste time on RA walls. Their exhibits are ridiculous. 😬

It’s time they showed a retrospective of Mary’s work! It would be interesting to see now twenty one years and more after these shops and buildings have gone. King Charles could pop a couple of his works in too just to keep his hand in.

What they think is right it's the fact that can't get the credit for her Talent because she's not educated by somebody else she's (self-taught). Which that means to me( talented)... it's not right but that they all do it.... I've watched it for years😢

What a great programme - and what a joyous video. Mary’s incandescent spirit shines through like a beacon. Her detailed work recording old architectural gems is heart warming to watch, though it seems the very architectural paintings she makes don’t ‘say’ enough to the RA - but having seen what they did exhibit, perhaps they need to change their hanging committee? What a moving film! And to think that had Mary's son Tony not decided to film her over all these years this story may not have been shared so broadly. What an amazing life Mary lived, and what a wonderful artist she became! I love to see her paintings of the old buildings in her Fulham neighbourhood, each brick lovingly reproduced, documenting a history that is vanishing. It was pretty special that in the end the last painting to appear at the Royal Academy was of her son who made this film. I feel very blessed to have come across this video. Many thanks.
