  • The bodies of three missing surfers, including a man reportedly from San Diego, have been found, according to Mexican authorities. The Baja California Attorney General’s Office confirmed Friday morning that the bodies were located in La Bocana, about 130 miles south of San Diego.
The three surfers were reported missing through social media posts earlier this week, with Baja California authorities officially announcing their disappearance in a press release Thursday.
The surfers were a San Diego man, Jack Carter Rhoad, and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, according to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune. The newspaper reported the three men didn't check into their Airbnb in Rosarito following a surfing trip south of Ensenada.
KTLA's Sandra Mitchell reports on May 3, 2024.

I would go down there in an instant, only I cannot get a passport, nor a ride. The media here makes MX out to be some kind of hot, dusty hellhole, from which there is no escape, which it most certainly is not. Most of MX is totally safe to visit, and even live in.
There are places here in the states where one could meet the very same end as these poor guys, it's just the locales that would be different. As well, this crime smacks of one of pure opportunity, and anyone here in the states as desperate as the perps in this case would no doubt commit the same heinous act. There's also that massive bag of blow... what does that have to do with the surfers' murders? Hmmm...

I was about to travel to Mexico after visiting San Diego on a cross country road trip back in 2020, but I change my mind and made a U-turn about 100 yards from the border because I couldn't stop thinking about so many strangers from the shops I visited in San Diego warning me Not to go there. I remember the cashier and several customers at a Petsmart literally pleaded to me not to go there. I'm glad that I eventually decided to listen to them.

This location was so close to the border (130 miles down) and the cities they went stopped at on the way (Rosarito and Ensenada) with such a long history of being extremely popular close-by tourist destinations from Southern California, it is more than believable that the two young men who lived in San Diego thought it would be OK. I wonder if the surfers were visiting the rancher on whose property the well with their bodies inside was found? The rancher was also killed and thrown down that well. The surfers were reported missing one week ago and the rancher was reported missing two weeks ago. Not clear if the rancher and surfers were killed at different times.

They do warn tourists ALL THE TIME to stay out of certain areas and don't ask for drugs of any kind, whatsoever unless you want to deal with the cartels. They are everywhere and have control over all criminal affairs including the law. Again the locals really stress how dangerous buying even pot can be now. Or old Mexico. The (now global) cartels are spreading and growing like wildfire. I went to Ecuador in 2014 and spent a couple of days in Quito. It had the usual pickpocketing type crime but nothing that serious. Just read about what's going on there now - according to many reports, it's well on its way to becoming Latin America's first full-fledged narco-state. This didn't get going for real until Rafael Correa left office in 2017 - only about seven years ago. The colossal growth in drug trafficking coincided with the next president's acceptance of 10 billion dollars worth of loans from the IMF. These same cartels have easily crossed into the US and have set up trafficking hubs across the country (and they've expanded well beyond drug trafficking). The US government doesn't seem too disturbed by it and continues to keep the border wide open.

A lot of surfers camp there, but there's lots of robberies, it has a reputation. I love Baja, I have camped and traveled and never had a problem, but seasoned Baja travelers avoid free camping in the north. There's plenty of nice campgrounds where you pay a few bucks a night, with security guards.

To think that you're any safer in a campground with "security guards" is a recipe for disaster. I have a friend who is American but she is of Mexican descent. She just went to visit family in Mexico for the first time ever, and her uncle told her that you're not even safe at resorts anymore. The Mexican police are either in on the crime, or they turn a blind eye to it because the cartel runs the freaking country, and everyone, is afraid do offer assistance to anyone who might be being harmed. If you can't go to an extremely populated resort and be safe, you certainly can't camp ANYWHERE safely. My friend was supposed to stay in Mexico for 3 weeks and she ended up coming home a week early because she was absolutely terrified to be there after what she saw and what she was told by her family there. Girls are not allowed to leave the village alone because the cartel has some goofy thing where if they touch a girl then she immediately belongs to them. The uncle had a friend visiting from America several years ago and the lady had her teenage daughter with her and they went to the town square for some sort of little festival or whatever, and in front of probably 200 people some men walked up grabbed the daughter and they went off with her. No one would help the fam because these men were armed. The girl was never seen again. She's missing to this day. I have two other friends who I have consistently tried to warn about going to mexico, but they are living "van life" and they just weren't taking it seriously. They thought they were safe because they were in a "safe" location (which is non-existent in Mexico at this point), and because they locked their van doors at night and kept their key in the ignition. They were stopped by a Mexican policeman shortly after they crossed the border, "who just wanted to make sure they knew where they were going, and give them directions." Sorry but cops don't pull you over to give you directions. They foolishly told this man where they were going to be camping and...what do you know, three trucks full of men pulled up at 2:00 a.m. You cannot even trust the cops there. And like I said, this was in what is deemed to be a "safe" location where there were other people within hollering distance. It doesn't matter. You cannot go there!!!! Absolutely reckless behavior. The van was surrounded by three trucks, their windows were shot out, their tires were shot out, their cat was hit and killed by a stray bullet, the female was sexually assaulted, and the male was kidnapped and managed to escape at some point before they were able to hold him for ransom and then kill him. They are lucky they made it out with their lives. Don't go there. You're not safe. ANYWHERE

I went to Riviera Maya in August 2018 with my mom and two sons. I booked an all inclusive resort package with an agent. The agent said, “DO NOT leave your resort unless paying for an excursion directly with the resort”. We had a great time and felt totally safe.

My most recent trip to Mexico was also in 2018, but not involving an all-inclusive resort. I also felt safe, had a good time, remained completely sober (as is my habit at home too), and came home just fine. This was not anywhere near the border and I would personally avoid going anywhere near the border and a few other specific spots where our State Department advises "do not travel."
There's a lot of Mexico that is not included in those ill-advised spots, and I'd go back in a heartbeat if airfare to Mexico hadn't gone insane.....I priced a trip for this summer there and, no matter the dates I put in, I could fly to some countries in Europe for the same price as next door to Mexico. So, sad to say, Mexico isn't getting my tourism dollars this year, but that's because of price gouging rather than fear of going. In the resort towns, hotels and activities are just as expensive as the US, too, so it's not like you can make up for overpaying on airfare with things being "cheap once you get there."

Obviously, none of these guys watch the news. They would’ve known to go surfing somewhere in California and not Mexico just doesn’t make any sense to go surfing there.

did you see the "beach" they were at??? It had cliffs and a rocky shoreline dont look like a tourist area to me and its in a REMOTE are no stores no roads NOTHING. I bet it was a drug deal gone wrong did you see the women with that big bag of cocaine i bet that was what they were trying to buy but drug dealers are sketchy and dangerous paranoid people especially if they didnt know them. I dont think those people were "cartel" people they are nobodies.

One is a dr... and STILL too naive to know: U don't go vacation in that part of Mexico. How could these 3 guys not know that the whole west coast from Tijuana all the way down - is the MOST DANGEROUS part of Mexico. I barely trust the hot spots like Tulum.
