Safety First on Campus. Except for Jews.

  • Safety first.
    That’s the approach taken by university administrators these days. On campuses across the country, “safety first” has birthed a whole new moral framework-one that treats rhetorical “microaggressions” as acts of violence.
    It’s safety first when it comes to edgy Halloween costumes. It’s safety first when a professor writes an email in which she says, “Black Lives Matter but also, Everyone’s Life Matters.” And it’s safety first when a professor fails too many students in his class.
    But when it comes to threats and calls for genocide against the Jews, it’s a different story. Not safety first, but anything goes.

    The crucial point she made here, is the gross disparity when it comes to who is protected by free speech. The College Presidents who were testifying, saying "we may not like these calls for genocide, but it's protected free speech" would sort of, a LITTLE bit have a point, if not for the fact the even slightly nuanced views regarding race/gender/other social issues get labeled as violence/harassment. When you get to the point where you say microaggressions are harassment, but calls for genocide, well that's a little less clear...you've lost the plot.

    • @victorcates9330
      @victorcates9330 7 месяцев назад +39

      If you buy the premise that it's free speech, they still have the option of expressing severe personal distain for the speech in question. One of them says she didn't hear calls for genocide. They're treading a line, expressing their newfound love of free speech, but not using it to loudly condemn what contextually they admit could be calls for genocide. If they plead the need for neutrality, then they're neutral over statements that are tantamount to "Yay, ethnic cleansing," then getting coy and adding with a smile "maybe".
      The most generous position I can cove up with would be that not all the students are explicitly calling for something that would be a genocide. Let' says you have a 1000 students yelling "from the river to the sea" or "intifada" and only 1% mean it in a genocidal way. If 10 of your students are genocidal loons, that seems an odd thing to want to remain neutral on - especially when universities have ABSOLUTE episodes over single instances of prejudice. If they would condemn hate one way, but get mealy-mouthed and careful, then you have to consider the possibility that a) they don't actually disapprove of the statements in question or b) they're parsing their speech because they're afraid of their own students.
      If they're sincere but have double standards, you can call them hypocrites. If their impotence is just cover, they're liars. They could be lying out of cowardice or something worse.

    I live near the University of Wisconsin Madison,....three blocks away. Three years ago they removed a sixty ton boulder from a campus hill using a crew of thirty men and industrial equipment and cranes. The boulder was dragged here from Canada by glaciers during the last ice age, over 100,000 thousand years ago. In 1925, (almost a hundred years ago), a newspaper reporter referred to the rock once with a racial slur. Because of that newspaper article written in 1925, the UW black student union demanded the boulder then be removed. This same campus then allowed Pro Hamas demonstrations to take place in October and November of 2023, less than 100 yards from the Hillel Jewish Center on campus,..... and didn't blink an eye.

      Weapons will not help Jews in the US. What is "trendy" and "fashionable" in US colleges today, almost certainly will become law, it is a matter of time only.

      If this was free press they would be discussing what words qualify as "genocide of Jews". "Intifada"? - that literally means "uprising against oppression" and it was made by people going to the streets and throwing rocks at the police. Rocks against guns and a government that has nuclear weapons - a government that has officials that have publicly called Palestinians "animals" and said that they would consider the use of a nuclear weapon in Gaza. Let that sink in!

    I find it incredible that these students are tolerant and celebrate the actions of a terrorist organisation that on 7/10 carried out atrocities that involved the murder of people similar to them. The young victims were attending a music festival where 260 of them were massacred in cold blood by men with AK-47s. How is it possible that group of young students have no empathy for their fellow students?

    I have donated to MIT for each of the past 27 years -- no more. In a letter to my department head explaining why I will no longer donate to MIT, I stated the following expectations:
    1) MIT leadership must make a moral stand that clearly differentiates good from evil, not try to appease everyone by not taking a position and offering the weak moral equivalences that the left is infamous for. The October 7 slaughter of Israeli civilians and unspeakable sexual violence against women and children DID happen. Hamas and Gaza "civilians" DID perpetrate these atrocities. Terrorism, torture, murder, and rape are NEVER justified.
    2) MIT leadership must set limits on what is and is not acceptable behavior under the Institute's code of conduct. That means applying the same standards to groups who would demonstrate on campus and call for the genocide of ANY group. If there were demonstrations on campus calling for the genocide of blacks or LGBTQ, there is no doubt that President Kornbluth and the MIT Board would not be "studying the situation for context" or waiting for the activity to "turn from speech into conduct".
    Until that happens, no donations from this alum!

    The three spineless presidents, when put on the spot, were considering every word they uttered in such a way as to take them out of the equation. Said differently, they were playing a typical politicians' game of obfuscation in terms of accountability and personal responsibility. However, all three failed miserably to show what should have been the most easiest of characteristics, that of humanity. They and their little leftist empires on campus have not turned their institutions into champions of free speech, but champions of a certain speech, which has become the orthodoxy everywhere. See what happens to you if you dare go against the grain, as thousands of conservative minded academic and students have found out over the years.
