No shade being cast on derrick but I think the music worked very well with this video. Still, the presentation level went up with the music and an even mix.
I am happy to hear you talk about the Super UFO Pro 8. I bought a Retron 5 a year ago for this purpose and so many people HATE it due to some ethical concerns on stolen firmware, which really should be up to each consumer whether they care about that or not. My Retron 5 also stopped working when the SNES pins got bent due to using a repro cartridge, so I was lucky enough to return it through Amazon and got a Super UFO Pro 8 instead. It basically does the same thing I wanted, play original carts with fan translations. It does still dump the ROM but does so from the cart itself. Super UFO Pro 8 is not very user friendly but if you spend some time learning it's ins and outs it works quite well and you can even do some cool things with it like back-up saves. Also the Super UFO Pro 8 is like $90 cheaper than the Retron 5, which gave me just enough money to also buy a RetroDuo Portable which lets you play NES and SNES games in a portable format, and the Super UFO Pro 8 is also compatible with it (same company). I don't hate the Retron 5 or the even more expensive RetroFreak and if you have the money and don't want to deal with higher learning curves, go ahead and get it just be very cautious with it because it doesn't have a high level of build quality. For those who want to use their original carts on original hardware though, Super UFO Pro 8 is great, and can even be used as a flash cart for emulation!
I want this now, and I COMPLETELY get the obsession with original hardware. I have a few Famicom/Super Famicom games that I own for certain fan reasons but since I can't speak Japanese, they can only sit pretty on a shelf. I will be finding one of these now. Thanks for the top SD!
i love my snes classic for playing snes translations, neo geo games, even sega cd games like snatcher. I played DQ1-3 Snes, DQ5-6 Snes with no problems. It's great with saving and all the filter hacks you can use now.
It’s been so many years. I still don’t think anyone has developed an NES equivalent sadly. I like this idea a lot. Even a Genesis & GB equivalent would be cool as heck.
Great video dude! I run a similar setup. I absolutely agree with you when it comes to original hardware specifically because of limitations (A fantastic topic on it's own, as limitations leads to dedication and in many cases beautiful results... Anyway.). I play on my Super Nintendo and load my patched roms on a Super Everdrive. It does support mode 7 and all that jazz, but because it's not a "& Knuckles"-style cart I always have my original copy of the game I'm currently playing nicely displayed next to my console. You're device here sure looks tempting though... Thanks for sharing your knowledge about it and keep up the good work! //Senkai
I am a HUGE collector and I tend to stick with carts-only because CIB cardboard boxed games are ridiculously expensive. But, SFC stuff is comparatively cheap. I've already collected a few CIB SFC games because I love their art style or the games were never released in the US. However, this for me is a game change. My sentiments are just like your and I now see my SFC collection expanding from the few games I have not to probably over 20 or more within the coming years. Thanks for showing this off. I had no clue such a thing existed.
This is awesome! I've always wondered if there was a way to play my FFII (IV) SNES cart, but somehow play it with a patched translation and still play it on original hardware. Thanks! I agree about playing it on original hardware, I even have some hacks/patches on the SNES mini, but it just doesn't feel nearly as good as playing with the original cart, original SNES and on a CRT!
I purchased one of these devices. The cartridge port was faulty. It wouldn't copy the ROMs from my cartridges and worse it even deleted the first game save from my copy of Ranma 1/2 Akanekodan Teki Hihou. Fortunately, I already had a backup of the save data on my Cyber Gadget Retro Freak and was able to copy it back to the cartridge. As much as I'd like to play translated games on original hardware, I'm sticking with the Retro Freak as it seems to be a safer option.
This is exactly what has always stopped me from buying a snes. All the games I want are across the 3 regions and I wanted to play real cartridges. Thanks for sharing :)
Dave The SNES isn't region locked though, well at least not at the Software level, you just have to break off two plastic tabs and poor, import friendly. Though, not sure about PAL, think you might be shit out of luck there.
Lol I actually emailed Nintendo. Thought that I would give them my idea as retro as a big demand. I said it would be a good idea to make a new SNES 2 backwards compatible, open source so people can make there own games if they want learn coding ect. So it would make it like a SNES/raspberry pi. The response was... It was a good idea but, beyond their control, as all hardware was made in Japan. I thought do you not talk to each other lol. IAm not sure if the contact email address or anything like that is available to contact them is out their but thought it was worth a shot.
I just recently purchased a Japanese Super Famicom after watching this video cause I absolutely got excited about the idea of translating SFC cartridges. Do you think you can make a video showing the process has I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
Jonas Gelzhäuser I was referring to the analogue nt Mini and not the super, but I don't think it matters as I don't think it does it as well (or at least I couldn't figure it out). I am not sure of the AVS as I don't have one of those. I thought there was an FPGA system that let you dump your own ROMs and allowed to patch a game in real time, but I could have confused it with a different product. I use just the Nt Mini and OEM consoles now and weirdly, I mostly use the Nt Mini for non-NES/Famicom/FDS games. I tend to use my actual hardware for those, especially the FDS as the mini's simulation and general compatibility with it is spotty to say the least. Plus I spent money on the EverDrives and I want to use them lol. I use it for Atari stuff and SMS games that have FM sounds (as I don't have mine modded yet).
i have one of these, i also have the old wild card and other backup units, the only reason i have these is 1 i am a bit of a collector in regards backup units. i am also working on mode on one of my wild cards i have converted the floppy into usb, its pretty easy as its a floppy emulator and if you know how to fit a floppy disk its just as easy. another mod using parallel port on back i am wiring a mcu nude to it and some code so i can use it as a wireless rom dumper
Hey, great video. I just picked one of these up. Can you share a step by step guide on how to get translation working. Tried following My Life In Gaming but got a bit lost along the way :(
Thanks for uploading this. For a few years I've also been using the Retron 5 to play Super Famicom games in English, and bought a bunch of SFC games as well. My HDTV is taken up by newer consoles these days, but I still have a CRT in my room with an original SNES hooked up to it. Good to know my SFC carts are usable on it, and not a waste of space. I prefer using original hardware when possible. Not to contradict my last point, but does anyone know if this works with a Super NT?
:) Super UFO looks cool, I wish it was still only $45 today. Not sure if they've stopped making them or what, everywhere I look it's either out of stock or they've jacked the price up.
You show super saiya Densetsu in your video but i am struggling to find a tranlastion ips that works with the dumped rom from the cartridge. It says the translation is for the v1.1 rom yet the dump is from the original code. Any help would be amazing.
Lost me when you started talking about a computer, was really looking for a way to just play the OG dragon quest games (not on ds, I want to play them on my tv) in English but it seems like the only way that's possible to download fan translations online. Guess I just gotta look for the ds copies of these games which is disappointing
I would love to play japanese character on my super NES, but that cost around 250 US dollars. I live in Brazil, our money value is 5 times less than dollars. I will never be able to buy one. :/ At least I have Zelda and it's my favorite RPG game. I would love to play mario RPG, but the original cart is even more expensive.
It's tricky for me, since I also like using my cartridges. I generally solve this by only buying Famicom and Super Famicom games that I know I can play without translations and using flash carts for the rest. You don't need to read to play some Contra, you know?
haven't tried on a SFC, I haven't got one, so you might need to verify with someone else sadly. I suspect it should work, but I wouldn't buy one without verifying first.
Any idea if this works in a Retro Freak or other clone consoles such as Old Skool Classiq 2 HD? I know I can apply patches on the Retro Freak but... I have had SEVERAL Retron 5s and they all stopped reading certain consoles games (prob due to pins wearing out) but their customer service was so bad I can't support them any longer.
Not sure about those, I know the Retron 5 won't work because it refuses to load a cart it doesn't recognize. Pretty sure the RetroFreak will be able to apply IPS patches on the fly since it uses the same emulators as the Retron 5. I suspect the Classiq might work because it looks like a straight clone console with HDMI, rather than emulation, but I haven't looked into it very much.
Thanx for the reply. Love ur channel & good luck w going full time. Livin' the dream! I really appreciate you spending time to answer my tiny channel's question. Good customer relations is a great way to succeed lol. 1 more thing... I'm sure you're very familiar with it but I just got a repro cart for the Genesis game Brave Battle Saga Legend of the Magic Warrior. RPG's are my fav & I am REALLY liking this one (just in case you haven't played it).
i have a question, do you patch the cartridge or just the rom? what happens if you plug in the cartridge of dragon quest withouth super ufo? will it be on japanese or english? what i want to know if you can permanently patch your cartridge or you just load the patched rom on super ufo?
The UFO dumps the ROM on boot, applies the patch, and feeds the patched ROM to the SNES. Nothing happens to the cartridge's data. However, specialized chips that the original cartridge had are still utilized in the process, and passed through to the SNES. If you plug the game into a SNES afterward, it will still be the same Japanese game, but the savefile will probably not work or look 100% correct. Permanently patching cartridges isn't possible without soldering new chips onto the board, in which case you may as well buy a reproduction cart outright.
@@SuperDerek so basically after you patch the rom you dont need the original cartridge on top? thanks for clarifying. i have a super ufo pro 8 but wasnt sure about rom patching. thank you good sir.
tnx for featuring my music. Interesting video!
Dude, you rock so hard!
Your camera presence and speaking has gotten really good!
No shade being cast on derrick but I think the music worked very well with this video. Still, the presentation level went up with the music and an even mix.

i guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Tomas Russell flixportal =)
@Rodney Edward Thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I really appreciate it!
@Tomas Russell Glad I could help :D

I forgot about this, but I was looking for this exact thing yesterday. I've had terrible problems with my retron 5, so it's patch days are over.
I have 148 jrpgs roms on my emulator, so even though I know all of this I'm just here for the quality content.
This is interesting, may try it

Wow, that’s really cool. I was wondering how you were streaming the game in English
This is actually really cool option if you want to play Super Famicom games in english, but personally I just use my my snes mini for this stuff.
I've had much fun with emulators. Not currently looking for a cheap hardware replacement.
The UFO Pro 8 does not properly step down the voltage for the flash that it uses. Prolonged use could kill your snes or do nothing at all
New here and Just binge watch your videos loved it and subscribed. Hopefuly u make a video about the final fantasy series and the trails sreies

Is there something like this that will also let me play japanese games such as famicom,n64,gb,gbcolor and advance.
I believe the Analogue Nt or the one of the other fpgas can apply a patch in real time.
Alex Noa nope, the Super NT can't
Jonas Gelzhäuser

I see you have Shin Megami Tensei on your shelf. That game is really tough!
It is! Almost as tough as letting Victor Entertainment play it with music on my channel! X(
Have you got this to work with star ocean? I’ve heard the dram on the ufo can’t support it. Please let me know!!!
Pretty sure it wont work for games that large, so for that game I ended up buying a repro cart
Mode 7 wasn't a special cartridge chip :P
Yeah, I mis-spoke. I was thinking of the SuperFX chip, I think. :)
:)

I study at Harvard and the Super UFO Pro 8 is the best thing we have ever seen.
Not all games will run on this sadly like star ocean

I just hacked my SNES mini, and put whatever games I want on it, some patched with iso files for translations or game improvements.

I just use my sd2snes, though I have the original Cartridges 95% of the time, as I am a collector. Honestly, I don't like using originals in general.
It’s $400 on eBay now :(
3:23 $200 AUD on ebay
$250????
Look like an old NitroRad
Wow that SNES is fugly. Might want to try and source a European PAL casing instead.
