I have the PAL release of Parodius Da! (titled: Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy) and the megaphone yelling in that one is actually translated (though I don't know if the localisation team were having a laugh of their own) into phrases like 'GOT A STINKFOOT' and 'SHAVING IS BORING'. Pretty hilarious in any case.
I love all of the guests that you bring on your show man, 3 years subbed and not a single ounce of regret! Of course Reggie will ALWAYS be my favorite, but John's sense of humor is hilarious.
Watching this in 2022, Spriggan Powered is going for around $1,000.00 AU and they talked about picking up games for $10.00 US man how times have changed.
Great video! My favourite retro console and I do have many SFC imports but was pleasantly surprised and pleased to be introduced to a few nice looking games that I'd never even heard of such as Zig Zag Cat :)
New to your channel, about a month now, and I love all of your videos. One thing I love about your intros is that you give equal spotlight to everyone who works with you, even when you are in the pictures/videos you may be off to the side. It shows how much you care about everyone you work with and you give them plenty of attention. Good on you man!
There is no Mode 7 in Spriggan Powered. It is Mode 1. Mode 7 has very limited use, mostly suitable for F-Zero or Pilot Wings-like games, and RPG overworld maps, but very rarely used in actual gameplay in games of other genres. In other genres it is usually only used for a level or a boss, not the whole game.
I've been playing SNES more than ever lately and mode 7 is more used than we think. I kinda have an eye guess now for whenever it shows up on screen and you'd be surprised on how often it's used, in places we don't even expect, like even in cutscenes and endings.
I love the Goemon (Mystical Ninja) series. I think it's one of the essential import series, because it has like 30 games, most of which haven't left Japan, but are mostly pretty easy to play for anyone, and are tons of fun. If you weren't aware, there's a 4th installment for the Super Famicom as well, called Ganbare Goemon Kirakira Douchuu: Boku ga Dancer ni Natta Wake. It plays mostly like the second one, only there are four characters, and you have to play as a different one in each world, and then play the final one together. Definitely worth picking up if you liked the second one. Or if you like fun overall.
Goemon 4 is great but I prefer 3 in narrative and the gameplay solving mysteries in both dungeon and the outside which gives me JRPG kinda vibes that is similar to Onimusha. Also the soundtracks is top notch.
2:28 me too! great memories! so glad my grandma somehow bought me this "strange" game that came to be one of my favourite games on the SNES =D beautiful art style and amazing gameplay and mechanics!
Always looking for some good imports, keep them coming! I'm one of the few suckers who actually imported a SFC like 15 years ago before I realized you could just mutilate your SNES to make SFC games work *shrug*. Still worth it, the SFC has a cool box and controllers with like a foot and a half cords on them (obviously better equipped for a small Japanese dwelling, but not a bad if you play games on a desk with the console less than a few feet away). Suggestions of games to check out: Taekwon-Do (menu navigation may require some gamefaqs help), and Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki. Anyway, great video!
Love the "iron trooper" shirt! Another great video, nothing sucks more than buying an Import game where you have to know the native tongue. Love you guys!
FINALLY Someone talked about Gundam Wing Endless Duel! That game is friggin' awesome!! It's one of my absolute favourite fighting games ever and it totally deserves a mention! Same goes for Super Bomberman 4, that's a great Bomberman game! One more thing, that thing in the background in Spriggan Powered isn't Mode 7, the Genesis and the Turbografx could totally do that...
Thanks for this great video. 25 years ago it was common practice for video game shops or even individuals to remove the notches from a Super Nintendo. As Super Famicom games were commonly sold here and I had quite the collection, which I unfortunately failed to keep. A couple of years ago I bought a used loose SNES system and I immediately removed the notches so I can play my current small collection of SF games.
you guys definetely have a cool connection with john. john is a really cool dude anyway so it becomes really easy for classic videos to be made lol. i take these lists very seriously :D
Thanks man, I am always on the search for new Super Famicom games that can be understood without knowing japanese. Most lists I find on that always come up with the same dozen or so of titles
Just started watching your channel this week and love it. I'm extremely new to collecting games and your videos have been so helpful and full of great recommendations.
I love Parodius - it was one of the few games I could complete as a kid. Parodius doesn't even make the ROM lists that claim to be full SNES collections - it needs more love.
Another awesome video Metal Jesus! This is why i really enjoy this channel. Also thankyou for opening my eyes to the game chasers, they are awesome as well.
Nice video! I'm always looking for more re gamez to explore....I'll have to check these out! The only drawback is it's just guessing on things like character conversations and menus and things since there is limited to no English but Japanese so sometimes it's easy to get stuck when there is a "Talk to this character, then go to this place and do this" I've played a few and a lot is where certain events only become unlocked and playable after specific actions in the games have been done. Aside from that, which some games can be even more difficult due to the language barrier, there are quite a few great games available specifically for the Famicom or super Famicom consoles and we're not released for NES or SNES, and many games are exclusive to Famicom or Super Famicom. Great list here to check out, lots of great recommendations on various systems including these.
Videos like this one are especially useful for finding awesome games if you're using a Retron5 and can find translation patches for your Famicon games. That way you can play them as if they were imported to the US. One game I'd like to mention is Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen which, if it was ever released in America like Nintendo Power said it would once upon a time, would've been known as Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters. This was probably the best Godzilla game before Xbox and PS2 titles like Destroy All Monsters Melee, Save the Earth and Unleashed were ever a thing, but unfortunately it was a Japan exclusive...
Nice video! The original Famicom actually just has a different pinout, not chipset, for the cartridges. There are adapters that allow you to play Famicom games on NES systems.
Good selection. I modified my SNES to play the Super Famicom games - open the SNES, take out the game tray and hit the notched with a dremmel. Works a treat.
I've always wanted to play super famicom games but I thought it was impossible!! Thanks John Riggs!!! You are awesome!! I think it's time to buy a super NES and start collecting all those great famicom games!!!!!!!
Kinda sad they forgot to mention one of the best features of Super Bomberman 4: In classic Battle Mode you can play as some of the bosses of the Story Mode besides Bomberman himself and everyone of those boss characters has a special unique ability they can use in the Battle Mode thus making the Battle Mode of Super Bomberman 4 more diverse than the Battle Mode of all the other SNES Bomberman games where all the other characters are only skins without unique features.
Good to see he Legend of The Mystical Ninja 2 & 3 on here as well as Sengoku getting a nod, never owned a Neo Geo either for the same reason but played the game in the arcade quite a bit back in '91.
I've got a great Super Famicom game to add to the list! It's called Gunman's Proof! I got a copy that is translated to English and the story is funny, the dialogue is really entertaining with interesting gameplay, kind of roleplay-esque I'm not too far into it yet but it's a fun game, roaming and talking to people, it's also colorful and neatly designed, great character sprites and everything. It kind of plays like Willow and similar games.Ive been into retro gaming since I got a Wii console when they came out and I bought a bunch of my favorite games via the Virtual store (I think that's what it's called but I haven't used the Wii in quite a while as they eventually shut down the option to buy games and download to the Wii.) Since then being able to play those games I've picked up a lot more games from many different consoles. Some videos here and on John's channel have also given me a lot of good recommendations for games to play, games to buy for my ever growing collection 😁 I grew up with the NES, SNES and Sega Genesis and that time period for gaming was just great for the selection of games...I play some of the newer ones but retro is my favorite, I'm hoping I can find some of the games recommended and check them out too. They sound great.
Picked up a few psp games while I was living in Japan years ago. Learned the other day you can use Google translate on your phone, point it at the psp screen and it does a pretty good job translating. Wish this was a thing years ago.
My recommendations for games with little to no knowledge of Japanese required: Sutte Hakkun - my absolute FAVORITE Super Famicom exclusive--an absolutely mind-bending puzzle platformer with a unique look and a great gimmick to it Umihara Kawase - This one is less hidden nowadays because it is popular with speedrunners, but it has possibly the best 2D physics ever in a game. Super Gussun Oyoyo - very weird falling block game where you have to save a stupid baby with falling blocks, which makes it more of a puzzle game than conventional falling block games. Kind of a Tetris/Lemmings cross. Do-Re-Mi Fantasy - Another one that's not so hidden anymore, but one of the best 16-bit platformers period. Majuuou - I mentioned this before, but it's a great run 'n gun with a twist where you turn into monsters at the end of levels and are permanently transformed for the next level. (To get the best ending, you must use each type once to get the ultimate one.) Ranma 1/2 Chougi Ranbu Hen - the only Ranma 1/2 fighting game that actually holds up pretty well. :) If you can read Japanese, I recommmend Clock Tower, Live A Live, Final Fantasy V (of course), all the Super Famicom Dragon Quest games, but especially DQV, the list goes on and on for RPGs on this console, really. It's a crazy number and a lot are good.
I actually did two quick playthroughs of Psycho Dream on my channel (just the first two levels). Very fun game that reminds me of Run Saber, Valis and Strider. I need the Parodius games, been after those for a while. Mystery Circle actually looks pretty decent. Why the hell didn't they release all the Bombermans here, damn it? Always bothered me. Gonna get those others some day. I actually have two bomberman imports on Game Boy that are pretty cool. Spriggan Powered! Ugh! Must have that one. Great vid guys!
Since I picked up a Retron 5, I've started picking up quite a few JRPGs that never came out in America that have fan translations and let the Retron 5 translate them.
Awesome video as always. Also, about Spriggan Powered, the first stage background is not mode 7, it is another type of effect. It was used with Axelay and even various Genesis games used that kind of Rolling effect like Contra Hard Corps. I can't remember exactly how it works but it is based on tiles of pixels or something like that. It looks pretty cool, tho.
Others that I have found that require literally no Japanese reading: Mario Picross, Mario and Wario, Super Tetris 3, and Pop'N Twin Bee (as well as Rainbow Bell Adventures). Also, the SFC version of Super Metroid is the same version in the US, containing both Japanese and English options. Also, love the shirt, MJR! A nod to Star Wars and Iron Maiden.
Many of these games are not just in Japanese, here in Australia for example (along with most other countries) our "Super Nintendo" was the exact super famicon you displayed and games like "parodius" were also released in english.
+MetalJesusRocks A game both of you should check out especially if you love anime/shooters is : Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Scrambled Valkyrie (In america the anime went by the name robotech) Talk about hidden gems............
+MetalJesusRocks Man, I wish I still had my import carts. I played through Final Fantasy V and Secret of Mana 3 both in Japanese without knowing the language, the story I created in my mind for FFV was waaay better than the ps1' versions story. BTW, I'll be in Seattle next week, (first time) anything cool going on I should know about?
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Not a game per say but there is a Bomber Man multi tap for the SuFami that obviously looks like a Bomber Man head. As far as good shooters go, Pop'n Twinbee and Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie are both great. For some good platformers check out the three Go Go Ackman games, they're great. For some decent fighters Yu Yu Hakusho 2 and Yu Yu Hakusho Final will do you just fine.
I had a very easy time removing the plastic bits from my US SNES. Figured it out on my own back when I imported a copy of Super Castlevania IV years back. That console has since aged in a not-too-great way, however, so I've since imported a Super Famicom console.. Now, that makes playing US games a challenge, because there is no easy mod to fit those into the SFC, _but_ it does work well with an AV connection and doesn't have a problem with US electrical voltage. The best way to play a US cart on one is to find an adapter, and there are special region adapters out there. I even found one that is absolutely universal, as in it can be used to play a game of any region on any region console.
Super Famicom is what I have the most games for. Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius is amazing. Almost Sega Saturn quality. I'd never even heard of Zig Zag Cat! Psycho Dream is good, but I slightly prefer Majuuou (have both though). Sengoku Denshou and Mystery Circle were others I'd never heard of. I have Super Bomberman 3--I prefer the classic kangaroos to the dinosaurs. I had heard of Gundam Wing Endless Duel, but hadn't seen it in action. It does look incredible, so I may have to pick that one up. I had heard of Spriggan Powered, but I'm not a shmup person (I make an exception for Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius. :P ) And I use a Super UFO 8 to play SNES games on my Super Famicoms, haha. I also have a Honeybee adapter, but that won't work with games that use the side pins for special chips.
I got Super Famicom games back in the day, and never got problems playing them on my SNES. The cartridges actually featured the notch, for some reason. I got games like Captain Tsubasa III on that way.
It's the easiest & quickest way to play SFC cartdiges on your SNES. I usually take the system apart to smooth it out & make it flush. Got a SNES with no yellow (collection system) & left the tabs. Cheap & easy lock out region piece to disable 😉
Super Bomberman 3 did come out in America. There's also a fan translation of Super Bomberman 4, which you can patch using the Retron 5 and a legit cartridge.
Awww ya another vid with Riggs! Love those Parodious games! I have one on the Saturn, but I'll have to see if the others are cheaper on Super Famicom....haven't started my SF collection, but i might have to start now!
Wow, I just watched this video to look for extra games for the mini (already had spriggan and parodius) but never knew there were goemon sequels! Anyway, I went too look up more info and like a week ago they were both translated into english! So weird and awesome and like the universe handed me a present from beyond all that space. Thanks for inadvertently making my night, weekend, month? Thanks to all the people that translate games as well, because without them I would have no Policenauts, and I never would have bought a sega saturn to play it.
Dude i added you to my facebook and my best friends play 80's slayer, megadeth and so on thank you for being a amazing himan being.i love your show more and more man you rock!ohh btw R.i.p. Jeff oh and Anthrax has a new song Evil twin.thanks metal jesus!!!
I got into super famicom collection when I picked up a retron 5 last year. Mostly because the price is right and the patching feature on the retron allows me to apply fam translations. thanks for this post.
Super Bomber Man 4 is a Japan exclusive?? OMG!!! I live in Brazil, and here we had a lot of japanese imports in the market. My first game was Spriggan Powered, and I knew that I had it thanks to import, but I played Super Bomber Man 3, 4 and 5 a lot, I could never imagined that those games were not released on the US!
Also, Super Bomber Man 5 is HUGE!! I never managed to see the true ending of this game. We go through EVERY level of every previous game, and at the end of each level, multiple portals come up. This game requires more skill and pacience than Skyrim, in my humble opinion!
The best part of using the Retron is that you can add the english patches, I got a few Famicom games that are cheaper than the super expensive NA versions and i can patch them so i can play without worrying about it
I live in UK but have a Super Famicom. I have two different adapters (Games Master and Universal Adapter) i use to play British or US version games. They each have two ports. In one port you place a Japanese game and in the other port you place a US or British cart. Then place that into the Famicom.
3:50 I watched the anime of Samurai Pizza Cats when I was young. That was the first anime I ever watched. It was probably in the early to mid 90's that I watched it.
A few of my favorite Super Famicom games: Umihari Kawase (Fun platformer with light puzzle elements) Cotton 100% (awesome shooter) Jaki Crush Pinball (part of the Crush Pinball trilogy!) Back to the Future II (A great looking movie based game) Magical Quest 3 (Great sequel to Magical Quest Mickey Mouse for some reason never came out here!...only on GBA) Comso Gang: The Video (Really fun Galaga style shooter by Namco) Rendering Ranger R2 (Really impressive Turrican style run & gun by Team 17) Twinbee Rainbow Adventure (fun shooter by Konami) Wrecking Crew '98 (The last game by Nintendo for 16-bit) Sonic Wings 2 (A great shooter which is also on the Neo•Geo)
I remember the day that my friend mutilated my Super NES in order to play Japanese game. He did not preface what he was gonna do with my Super NES. I was just horrified as he used a needle nose pliers to take out those notches on my American Super NES. It got mutilated, but you have to look to know that it was. but hey it worked perfectly fine! I need to get more JDM Super NES game.
The Artwork on SFC games is always stunningly amazing!
Terium Whoever thought to change artwork and design for U.S market should never work again !
Fr makes me wana collect all of them
The Asian graffiti rocks
Fun Fact about Psycho Dream: the composer of the game, Michiko Naruke, also composed the soundtracks for the majority of the Wild Arms' series.
I love all of the guests that you bring on your show man, 3 years subbed and not a single ounce of regret! Of course Reggie will ALWAYS be my favorite, but John's sense of humor is hilarious.
Watching this in 2022, Spriggan Powered is going for around $1,000.00 AU and they talked about picking up games for $10.00 US man how times have changed.

horay for Ganbare Goemon, and the fans that want more in the series X3

Japan has so many amazing Super Nintendo games that we never got. I made a list of more games!
I love John's passion! He is becoming one of my favourite guests on your show. However it's hard to top Reggie!
Every time I hear John Riggs I think John Riggins from the 1980s Washington Redskins. :)
the prices of some of these games are up there haha

I finally figured out what this channel reminds me of. Wayne's World! You guys are a retro gaming Wayne's World!
Love the "iron trooper" shirt!
Another great video, nothing sucks more than buying an
Import game where you have to know the native tongue.
Love you guys!
All of the guys that Metal Jesus are inviting for videos are so awesome, i love to watch those videos XD
@1:18 the nervous mjr laugh when John says "some herbs may have been smoked" LOL
The PS1 Gundam games were better. Strangely enough, they were released in the USA, but they are VERY hard to find, Michirin9801.
Just recently subbed, one of the best channels for console content.
7 years ago already, thank God for fitness & gaming

Thanks man, I am always on the search for new Super Famicom games that can be understood without knowing japanese. Most lists I find on that always come up with the same dozen or so of titles
I very much appreciate you listing the names of the games in text in description! Awesome! Now I can check these out!
herbs may have been smoked, indeed!Great games!
This channel takes e to that nostalgic happy place.
Yeah, I have an idea for a show. You should do an episode on Nintendo 64 Imports & Hidden Gems. That'd be super groovy, Metal Jesus. Thanks.
Been watching this video again since I bought a Retron 5 and man, I crack up everytime I hear you two trying to describe ZigZagCat!
I recommend 'Sanrio World Smash Ball' for super famicom! A really fun and addicting game. Don't be put off by the fact Hello Kitty is in this one! ;)
Just started watching your channel this week and love it. I'm extremely new to collecting games and your videos have been so helpful and full of great recommendations.
I forget his guest’s name but he always has a fun, bubbly vibe. 🥰
I love Parodius - it was one of the few games I could complete as a kid. Parodius doesn't even make the ROM lists that claim to be full SNES collections - it needs more love.
parodius da was one of my favourite games for the snes as a kid, loved it, twin bee was always my go to dude!
Gundam Wing ED was the first SNES game I've ever emulated, and god damn did that intro blow me away.
Bought Pop'n Twin Bee and Gokujyou Parodius. 😊 Should arrive in three to four days. 👍 I can't wait!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice
+MetalJesusRocks, I just bought a super famicom with the original controller and four games yesterday for $44, so thank you for making this video
Another awesome video Metal Jesus! This is why i really enjoy this channel. Also thankyou for opening my eyes to the game chasers, they are awesome as well.
If you guys like this channel, another awesome similar one is HappyConsoleGamer! Cool dude!
+ChrisBlazn we love that channel!

I love this guy.
+dieser Bombi And we love you back!

Haha the sound at 07:50 . Great video as usual Jesus!
Good selection. I modified my SNES to play the Super Famicom games - open the SNES, take out the game tray and hit the notched with a dremmel. Works a treat.
Love that ur Half-Life stuff is the most noticeable thing in the backgroun XD

Arkanoid might be one of the most underrated NES games. It is so simple in it's concept but so addictive to play. I need to try zigzagcat now.
Good to see he Legend of The Mystical Ninja 2 & 3 on here as well as Sengoku getting a nod, never owned a Neo Geo either for the same reason but played the game in the arcade quite a bit back in '91.
Wow, I had no clue Sengoku was on the Super Famicom. I would have loved that game on a console. I always played it at the arcade when I saw it.

John Riggs, I´m fan of Valis too. I like Sega Genesis games of the series.

Games Shown in the video:
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
Gokujou Parodius
Parodius Da!
Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shougun Magginesu
Ganbare Goemon 3
Zig Zag Cat
Psycho Dream
Sengoku
Mystery Circle
Bomberman 4
Shin Kidou Senshi Gundam W: Endless Duel
Spriggan Powered
+MetalJesusRocks A game both of you should check out especially if you love anime/shooters is : Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Scrambled Valkyrie (In america the anime went by the name robotech)
Talk about hidden gems............
Could you get some of these games in America game stores that sell Super Nintendo and how can I play these games?
+MetalJesusRocks great episode!!!
+MetalJesusRocks Have you ever played a Dreamcast and Xbox game called Shenmue? I think you would really like it
Great vid. If nothing else, I've certainly never heard the word "Bomberman" said so many times XD
I count 17
I'm always looking for great Super Famicom games. If you know of any I need to check out, let me know! Put'em in the comments.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Alwyas like you energy you bring to the show! :)
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Mario's Picross. Seriously fun, and tons of puzzles.
+TheIsolatedGamerz Thanks man!
+Guerilla Grue Plays ooh! Good one. I love the picross games.
Pop N Twinbee is a fantastic wonderful shmup on the super famicom. Try it.
And I use a Super UFO 8 to play SNES games on my Super Famicoms, haha. I also have a Honeybee adapter, but that won't work with games that use the side pins for special chips.
I got Super Famicom games back in the day, and never got problems playing them on my SNES. The cartridges actually featured the notch, for some reason. I got games like Captain Tsubasa III on that way.
I really enjoy John Riggs on the show, Jesus and John go great together like peanut butter and jelly.
+thaddeus mcgrath ooh, I hope I'm the jelly.
+thaddeus mcgrath indeed. That was also a very powerful comment btw. lol
I have Super Back to the Future 2, great game. I modified my SNES by removing the tabs inside, works fine.
Thanks about how to play all games on one unit! Love to see more!
Awesome video! Love seeing John on these videos.
+Jake Coffman Thanks man!
Awww ya another vid with Riggs! Love those Parodious games! I have one on the Saturn, but I'll have to see if the others are cheaper on Super Famicom....haven't started my SF collection, but i might have to start now!
I first learned of the Parodius series from your videos!!
+CircuitsandCoffee The Saturn version may be the best of all!
Spriggan powered looks right up my alley thanks
Always a positive experience watching your videos. Thanks so very much!
Love these import videos. There are so many gems out there.
Ganbare! Daiku no Gensan (Let's Go! Hammerin' Harry) is definitely one platformer worth checking out
I got into super famicom collection when I picked up a retron 5 last year. Mostly because the price is right and the patching feature on the retron allows me to apply fam translations.
thanks for this post.
Also, "Well, Iiiii got it for ten bucks," is pretty much the catch phrase of the show haha.
Thank you for these videos. It really hard to know what to buy on the FC/SFC systems if you don't speak Japanese. This video is really helpful.
Konami ruled the gaming landscape during the Super Nes Age
Goemon 2 and 3 were phenomenon. 100 games today wouldn't match the fun back then.
Yeah, I use the Super UFO Pro 8. That actually let's you fan patch the games as well - pretty nice (even though it's a pretty poor flash cart).
Still can't get over old Heavy Metal people into videogames lol
These games look fucking beautiful and kid-friendly. I wish I had these growing up!
3:50 I watched the anime of Samurai Pizza Cats when I was young. That was the first anime I ever watched. It was probably in the early to mid 90's that I watched it.
Magical Pop'n and DeReMi Fantasy are also great, if you enjoy platformers. Also, really dig the Maiden reference on that SW shirt.
A few of my favorite Super Famicom games:
Umihari Kawase (Fun platformer with light puzzle elements)
Cotton 100% (awesome shooter)
Jaki Crush Pinball (part of the Crush Pinball trilogy!)
Back to the Future II (A great looking movie based game)
Magical Quest 3 (Great sequel to Magical Quest Mickey Mouse for some reason never came out here!...only on GBA)
Comso Gang: The Video (Really fun Galaga style shooter by Namco)
Rendering Ranger R2 (Really impressive Turrican style run & gun by Team 17)
Twinbee Rainbow Adventure (fun shooter by Konami)
Wrecking Crew '98 (The last game by Nintendo for 16-bit)
Sonic Wings 2 (A great shooter which is also on the Neo•Geo)
I remember the day that my friend mutilated my Super NES in order to play Japanese game. He did not preface what he was gonna do with my Super NES. I was just horrified as he used a needle nose pliers to take out those notches on my American Super NES. It got mutilated, but you have to look to know that it was. but hey it worked perfectly fine!
I need to get more JDM Super NES game.
Where did you get that shirt from? it´s awsome!
