I heard him play this live and it was the single greatest musical experience of my life. I’ll never forget the sound of the first C sharp at the beginning - almost rose out of my seat with it.
You are so lucky to have had that experience!! I was too young, never had the opportunity to see him live. And picking THAT piece.. unbelievably great ❤️
Playing like this doesn't come with practice, but with a deep, powerful and sensitive experience in understanding the music you are playing under your fingers. It doesn't come with hours of repetitions, but rather with years of listening

would make for a great painting. Some of them were languidly relishing the performance and many of them were thinking of things that happened to them and their friends in their lives. That's the power of this music.
I love it too. It's a historic shot- this was Horowitz's first return to the USSR since he was 22, and tickets to this concert were reserved for the elite. These are Moscow Conservatory students who crashed the concert without tickets.
Absolutely love how he gives space to all the voices and countermelodies one at a time, the bass voice included. The suspensions of the main melody he plays soft instead of accentuating them with more volume (at least in the beginning) - and that's how he makes them stand out. At the very end he brings out the bass line beautifully (starting with C#/B).
This sounds so easy until you get into the piece with its continual "rise" and all those inner melodies and accentuated notes. Truly a "Russian" composition performed flawlessly.
And even if you cannot achieve any of that it's still an amazing piece of music with greater emotional meaning for me than probably anything else I've heard in a long while
@@chrisy367 When Horowitz in Moscow, in 1986 for this recital, he visited Scriabin's old house and met Scriabin's daughter. You can find the clip on youtube.
Perfection - Horowitz builds this enchanting work of art with his phrasing and total control of his emotions, this is as beautiful a performance as I have ever seen of any pianist, I’m dumbfounded by its beauty.....
He takes such great care with this piece as he always does and so evokes all kind of emotion from us al! Just wonderful. Can't get enough of this performance and one of my favorite pieces!
Ann Singer he often asserts his ego into many of Scriabin's pieces (see op 32 no 1, op 42 no 5). Sofronitsky or richter do a better job capturing the essence of the piece as intended.
When you listen to a recording of Horowitz, you learn a lot of things about the piece played... You suddenly understand everything about the shades, the contrasts, the different voices... Later on you go back to lang lang... and you understand what is the technique... But you forget what is the musicality and the sophistication straightaway.
I find with Horowitz playing Scriabin such a unique touch and color. Some passages are bright vibrant almost overwhelming, and some as though he has dipped the minutest amount of watercolour on canvas. Breathtaking. And I agree with you on Lang Lang.
comparing horowitz to lang alng i find it superior , you may as well listen to horowitz recording of rachmaninoff piano concertos to understand what i am talking about , or even his famous interpretation of liszt 2nd hungarian rhapsody , lang lang may have a good technique , even a great one but saying he's superior to horowitz is inaccurate at least for me, even rubinstein praised horowitz's technique and said that he would dream to be as technically powerful as him
Hi Lang Lang himself in one of his interviews with Chinese audience said Horowitz is THE GREATEST pianist since the piano recording was available(the host mentioned a few to Lang Lang but he was very clear without any hesitation in saying that). He actually mentioned this legendary Horowitz's last performance in Moscow and described how much he was moved when he saw a person crying when Horowitz played Schumann's Traumerei. Lang Lang is a young and talented pianist and his musicianship is still evolving and growing. I would not dispute Horowitz's status as one of the greatest pianists, especially his performance in Rachmaninoff Concertos(No. 3 in my personal opinion is the greatest ever). But on the other hand, I feel maybe we should also put Lang Lang on a fairground without dismissing the potential he has and the credit for what he has achieved in inspiring the younger generations of pianists and audience around the world. I agree that there are many pieces Lang Lang has not yet achieved the level of artistic performances by those greatest pianists such as Horowitz(indeed, he himself agrees with that in the interview, and he hopes he could fulfill his dream someday to reach the level of artistry by Horowitz, Glenn Gould etc). That said, I also feel, in the meantime, there are many pieces which Lang Lang's performance has inspired a new way and insight to re-appreciate the beauty and spirit of those immortal works. Afterall, if we want the classic music, piano in particular, to continue to grow, probably we should be a bit more patient to allow ourselves to pay attention to the efforts by those young pianists to inspire and reinvigorate the youths to appreciate the classic music in an age when it is difficult for people to have the patience to do so.

Somehow Horowitz brings something beyond the page that other pianists don’t. He understands the depth underneath the notes and makes them more somehow. Alive. Or some such.

The emotion. No one was better than Horowitz.

Totally agree, the inner melody is quite difficult but the continual rise is near impossible to get down
