- August 2012: The Kato EMD F40PH has been reborn! Retooled and refitted (just like the real locomotives were) to equip cab air conditioners and illuminated ditch lights, the Scale EMD F40PH is now available in Virginia Railway Express, Caltrain, and Metrolink commuter schemes.
To accompany this new commuter locomotive release, Kato USA is releasing new bookcase style Nippon-Sharyo Bi-Level car sets, which can combined with available individual cars or locomotives to allow modelers to build and store their own Metra and Virginia Railway Express commuter sets!

Kato should totally make the old school Pullman bi-levels in N scale. I had a few of them in H0 before I changed over to N scale & they were fantastic!
That Chicago Metra line is amazing I got the village of Winfield one and love it, getting the city of West Chicago next.
That is a very neat and awesome idea for commuter train equiptment.
I also really really like the HO and N-Scale products from Kato especially the MP36PH.
Kato rocks. Bring on the Metra F40PHs in N
I liked ur sense of humor at the end...w the HO metra engine
I know they *maybe* coming... but I'll be the squeeky wheel as well... Metra F40s! :) You ugys have done a fantastic job with the metra cars. Well done!
I like how the set comes in a book styled storage case
Hey Kato it would be cool to see some N scale RTA F40PH
Great video, love the Metra comment 'soon'. Hope to see GO Transit 'soon' too!
I am a Kato groupie...awesome, like everything they make.
It would depend on what you're looking for (passenger? freight? either/or?), but we do have a couple of starter sets that make it very easy to break back into the hobby, as well as a number of "starter series" locomotive and car sets that can be combined with a basic track oval; I'd suggest giving our website a look (link should be in the video description) and seeing if anything tickles your fancy. You can also feel free to give us a call (phone number is on the website!).
SWEET!
It is! Our new HO Metra F40PH locos will actually be shipping out at the end of this month.
You know, it would be really sweet if you made this (MP36s, F40s, and Bi-levels, maybe even bombardiers) in HO Scale, Caltrain scheme and possibly ACE Scheme . Little to competition there. :)
I've got a bunch of Kato's Japanese trains in the bookcases. I'd love to see Kato release all their American passenger trains in the same cases.
Love it
Awesome! I definetly plan on getting one of those.
It would certainly be a reasonable expectation. The HO F40PH mechanism is already designed to fit ditch lights, after all.
We're taking orders right now for Metra Pullman Bi-levels in HO to be shipped next month; if the sales of those go well, we would certainly give serious consideration to doing other/additional cars.
The heritage ACe's are something we're definitely looking at doing - hopefully there will be a more solid answer for you before the end of the year!
thx for reply
i guess gonna have to buy few more before i come back home :)
Empty display cases similar to the generic bookcases that are sold in Japanese hobby stores are something we are currently discussing - no promises but we're working on it!
Probably not for the immediate future, although there are rolling stocks out there from other companies that will match these cars quite nicely.
I'd say there's an awfully good chance of that, yes.
Very intresting storage system
"Soon..."
Looking forward to that! Glad to see that KATO is revisiting the F40PH. Any chance of some CalTrain and/or Metrolink rolling stock to go along with the new F40's?
We're looking at hopefully having some more 40-2's in various road names for next year,
Metra F40PH? Soon? I hope so! And in multiple road numbers, please!!!
Sorry For the loss of the Locomotive...
I've had one break, it probably felt the same for u guys.
speeking of future trains:
a possibility for a new train set would be an aem 7, and 3 amfleet 1s. it could be called "amtrak northeast corridor set"
one more thing: sence kato made an f40ph in metrolink even though they dont have the passenger cars, maybe they could make the new rotem coach and cab cars.
Very nice. Love the VRE set as I own the MP36 set myself. Will be adding the F40s as well. Any chance of GP40PH in the future for the VRE, NJT, New Haven modelers?
ApproachLimitedPros PLEASE DO THE GP40PH! those things in VRE where my childhood!
Nice Engine Kato! Is there any chance of a re-release of the N Scale Mid Production SD40-2's? It would be nice to see more Roadnames like the IC Deathstar scheme or the BN Stripes and Tiger Stripes, also UP, NS, CSX, and KCS.
Is the metra F40PH at 2:58 an upcoming HO scale release? Awesome case design by the way:)
nice that can get the f40 in metrolink and caltrain .... too bad that dont have ant caltrain
gallery cars for if ( athearn has only the bombardier and they have been gone for long time)
gonna get the f40 caltrain for my own caltrain gallety cars .... (converted metra cars :) )
the storage case is nice touch and they work well but i used a 4 car case that i got in japan
for both my metra sets .....
will there be any cases available by themselves just like in Japan?
Hey KATO nice stuff, any chance on P40/42 in HO scale?
Do you plan to make caltrain livery bi-level cars for n-scale? I have no use for just a locomotive, so this would be a big help. Thanks
can you make the n scale Mp36 Metrolink And Caltrain
When will you produce cars for the CalTrain version o the locomotive?
BTW is Metra f40 planned ? Microscale had decals but they long gone.......
so I'm guessing CalTrain Bi-Levels are next? As well as Metrolink MP36PH's?
I took a long brake from model railroading to work on another hobby and i wanted to get back into model railroading, so i wanted to know what n scale train would you recomend to get back into the hobbie of model railroading.
HANOVER PARK METRA STATION
Are you guys going to make any Metrolink cars?
No plans for those at this time, I'm afraid.
***** What's the point of any of this? :)
HO P42's PLEASEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
2:44 why did the case make that noise? XD
It’s the material that it’s made of and it makes that sound
Why did KATO only do the AMTK F40PH WITH DITCH LIGHTS IN PHASE III AND NOT PHASE IV as well
How come KATO DOESN'T DO THESE IN HO SCALE THAT'S NOT FAIR WE HAVE DOLLAR'S TOO !!!!!!
