The trade industry needs more folks like you. These old dudes are great and all but keeping secrets from new guys gets everybody nowhere fast. I appreciate your helping hand and words of advice and I’m not even a welder! Truck driver by trade but it’s the same thing in my line of work as well. It’s pretty apparent that you’re willing to help out new guys but still 100% about your business.
I’ve always felt like i owed the guy that taught me how to pipeline. I’ve tried to repay him for years and every time, he tells me to pass it on. That’s how the next generation will make it.
A guy at work walked by while I was watching this video and told me about his neighbor that started out with a beat up, multicolored Tacoma and a big diesel Miller welder and dune torch bottles on a home built trailer. He said the guy ran that setup for about a year and a half before buying a Dodge Ram and a Lincoln to build a proper welding rig. The next year, he bought a second Dodge and a second welder. The third year, two more. Now, 5 years in, and he’s running a fleet of 12+ trucks with employees on his payroll.
Finally someone says it right. Invest in a real machine first not a blown out piece of junk. Wish people told me that to start out. So much wasted time and frustration climbing in the back of a rig to work on something every other day.
Great advise on the truck and welder, I can relate to that on tooling in general for a trade you gotta have the tools and you need to get to and from but you don’t need to be flashy as a greenhorn
Yep, quality of work and craftsmanship should be the first priority when getting started. The nice truck and new machine can come later. Thanks for the comment!
@@DownhillWelder300 thank you. I love seeing the way your channel is going now, before you know it your will have 100k subscribers. I’m 18 and still confused on what to do in life but I love watching videos like you have of yourself growing and becoming better. Remember me when you get big lol

Do I need a die grinder? I’m a student, went to trade school and got my welding/ assembly certification, now I’m doing a 6 month pipe welding course. I noticed that we use die grinders with flap disc grinding wheels on them to clean up the inside of the pipe where we weld the root. Not so much on Stick welding but more so when Tig welding. I’m looking at the Milwaukee m18 die grinders. Do it need that ? It’s the only power tool we use other than grinders
I’m wanting to be a welder when I grow up so I’m just trying to get the idea on thinks im going to need and stuff like that, love the rig too that think is gorgeous
Just keep in mind that it’s real tough when you’re young and first starting out. Virtually no one takes you serious and having someone/ a shop go out on a limb and take you is a bigger deal than you initially think.
Thanks a lot! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There’s a wealth of knowledge here on RUclips and what seems to be a lot of people willing to help out.
Thanks for your help I’m new to the rig welding I’ve been looking at different setups on other welders trucks and getting ideas and I like the way you set your truck up in the last few videos simple and easy. Do you think a CM bed would work by modifying it or is it better to build off the truck? I have my setup on a trailer for now.
Glad i could help! A cm bed will get you by. Lots of guys use them. Around this time of year there’s lots of welding beds for sale on Facebook. There’s lots of pages that focus on beds and rig welding in general.
Do you think it’s possible to brake out welding straight out of school I’m about to graduate welding school I have a rig but no contracts for rig welding I need some advice please
The guy i bought it from doesn’t make them anymore. I’m going to try and find another company eventually, but luckily i haven’t lost this one yet. Going on 5 years with it.
Believe it or not, it’s just sitting on the bed. I have a cut out in the mat on the bed that it sits in but other than that I’ve never had a problem with it moving.
They are the sumner st-106 flange pins. Threaded only. I don’t trust that a helper or myself won’t sit a level on one of the buttons accidentally on the button style. 5/8” - 1-5/8” holes are what those pins are for. They do 99.9% of what you’ll need.
Do you see odd trucks out in the field, reason I ask is that I have an 56K original miles diesel Isuzu npr 1999 not 4 wheel dually flat bed boxes crane and a miller big blue 300. Thank you for your videos very informative and appreciated!
Going on year 6 and 158,000 miles without it moving so much as an inch. There’s a cutout that it sits down in. It’s not just sitting on top of the bed.
I have a black face and red face sa200 but looking to eventually upgrade to a new diesel machine. What’s your thoughts on the new Lincoln machines ? I mostly see everyone switching over to the miller pipe pros.
There’s nothing wrong with a good ole sa200. I started out with a classic 1 sa200. From what i hear, miller customer service is WAY better than Lincoln customer service. I would go with whatever you can get worked on close to your house.
It’s a leather cover for it. The guy i got it from is no longer making them but if this ever gets lost or messed up, guys just use pipe wraps. I’m pretty sure a 12” pipe wrap fits perfectly over the reel.
@@DownhillWelder300 it’s content for you, that’s for sure. They want to cosplay.
Thanks for your comment! You’re correct. I work most of the year so it would take me a couple winters if not more to build my own bed (not a “body” lmao). Most guys in this line of work are off for months. Plus, i can make in a week and a half what this bed cost me. My time is worth way more to me working on something i want to do instead of building a bed.
One thing for sure, you might be able to weld but your no fabricator that it would take you a couple of winters to do a week's worth of work. And what you have is a truck body not a flat bed. But I have to admit it, it is a nice looking rig even if you didn't build it.
