  • Dick visits Martha's Dandee Creme in Glens Falls, (Queensbury) New York for some sweet treats.
As with most things, Dick is very particular about his ice cream and the standard of quality and service at the American Roadside Jewels that are Dairy Bars. If you're looking for a destination for your motorcycle ride, a Dairy Bar is rarely a mistake.

I lived in Canada for three years (and intend to go back) and was struck by how good dairy bars are. Now. Around Vancouver it's 95% dairy queens but even they are worth visiting on a hot day on the way home from work.
I cannot imagine why we don't have dairy bars in the UK. Ice cream vans are so threadbare by comparison

If we ever get over I'll definitely remember how to find the best places! I could murder a proper malt shake right now! Have a great summer:)

Can't beat a Creme treat. I'll be out on my trike later looking for a cake and coffee.

I do want to see more like them, and I also want to know -
    Great Escape theme park?
Tell me this is a Steve McQueen styled attraction, with rides reenacting his, or rather Bud Ekins', famous motorcycle jump.
Or maybe I heard it wrong?

Inspite of Blighties iced climate, is there anywhere worthy of creamy praise?
Any recommendations for UK parlour visits? Is it more cake-café culture rather than milkshake magnificence!?

Thanks for your comment. I’d agree the U.K., for me is more about the Tea Room and Cake shop. However, there is Glaslyn Ices in Beddgelert, Wales. They make their own ice cream and it as good as anywhere (and better than most places in the U.K.) - and a great ride to reach it! Then there is Nardini’s in Largs, Scotland. An art deco ice cream parlour in a costal town. They too make their own ice cream. They used to have a location on Byres Rd in Glasgow, but sadly it closed. Speaking of Byres Rd, “Minted” just opened there in the past couple of years and they too make their own great gelato, using local scotch milk and ingredients when possible. Snugbury’s in Nantwich is a charming spot for ice cream, but unfortunately their success has forced them to use the same fillers and other ingredients that big manufacturers use and it detracts from the product. Their location and sundaes make it worth the stop though and it’s still better than most supermarket brands. And if you’re pressed for good gelato in London, there is a chain called Amorino that makes consistently great ice cream. If you order a cone they fashion it into a flower, which is a nice touch. If I think of any more, I’ll drop a line. Ride safe.

Why so bitter toward the states???

The social, economic and political decline of the entire nation leaves a bitter taste.

@@DickWhistles I agree with your assessment of the current state of the country. My guess is that we would disagree on the solution. Stay well my friend.

@@kennethgianetti4590isagreement is fine. Compromise is what created the country in the first place - and saw it through its darkest moments. Americans have forgotten how to compromise. Ultimately, it will be our undoing - No great enemy, just internal decay with only ourself to blame for the neglect. I have chosen the Henri Matisse route, sequester in paradise as the world falls asunder. My voice has proven a whisper in a cyclone.

@@DickWhistles One might argue that there have been too many compromises made. I think a large part of Americas inability to govern is the loss of a cultural commonality. Things as a country that for the most part we agreed on as a society. The loss of this bedrock undermines our political discourse and our social cohesion. We are seeing this occur in the UK and Europe as mass immigration strains the cultural cohesive norms that many governments are based on and rely upon to function. Couple this with financial burdens and things inevitably start to fall apart.
