Did this once in both directions. Have been west/east and back in previous years
but usually further south. Slept in the back of my new Ford 150 when tired. Just
pulled over where the shoulder was firm, flat, and wide. Had no people problems.
Recommend carry of extra fuel, oil, and water. A/C helpful but I liked the heat.
Would start off on an early dawn with the heater on feeling happy every day.
Highway 50 does indeed have little traffic. Slow moving large trucks are often
easily passed. I did take time out for walking the empty places seeking relics.
Found a big tarnished brass button stamped "US", a hunting knife, and 2 boxes
of .38 pistol ammunition once at different walks. Two of that trio went into a
    garbage can at fuel stop.

I would like to join you one day with one of your trips. I wanted to drive semi truck in the States but for some reasons I was unable, maybe one day. Kind regards from Hussein.

I'm love"n the the spectacular views. Awesome clouds, very beautiful sky. Love your zoom in feature. The mountains are amazing. One looks snow covered, the other lush greenery. Be it forest or just landscape of fields and trees. I had to laugh when you said the road was busy. Not sure what happened to that truck. That must have been when your camera was off. It's like a shock to the system hearing about a snow storm. But I guess you're pretty used to seeing snow in the summer. Is that why you're called Mountain Man Mike. Those yellow bug's must be a pain in the ass. But the view can't be beat. I am really enjoying that view. With or without Aliens. What no peace sign? Hope your day gets netter darlin. God Bless you.

Mike, boy howdy, you said it about Hwy 50! I've driven that hwy many of times and loved being out there pretty much all by myself, see a few 4 wheelers and semis but far between miles seeing other vehicles and those old towns are still out of sight to see! You sure brought back some great memories and thanks for allowing my safety class today and myself riding along! Happy trails and peace!

Yes, there are quite a few Petroglyphs at that park you passed.
Too bad about your camera letting you down and missing the footage from Austin.. Pretty little town in that canyon.. Loved driving through it. Always amazed by the big church and steeple up on the hillside on the right.

I watch JBG as well as your channel, the country side the two of you enjoy is completely different. Johnny runs thru green rolling landscape interspersed with cities, your neck of the woods is more like New Zealand's South Island. High country tundra with beautiful snow capped mountain ranges. Our North Island is more like Johnny's scenery. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

My husband came to meet me for lunch at CalTrans HQ on 27th St, Sacramento (next to Business 80) back in 2001. We walked over to the Whole Food Store and I see his bobtail truck parallel parked between two cars. There were several CalTrans Engineers standing there in amazement looking at it. My husband told me they watched him do it in one attempt. Funny. Ok, now for the CalTrans jokes.

Was driving east to west on this road, back in 1998. I could see another car going the same way, it was far in front of me. I had the windows and sunroof open...... in a zoned out mind. All of a sudden a loud noise, I thought I blew up the car.....I slowed down trying to figure out what happened. I then saw a air force jet buzz the car way out in front of me and it shot straight up after. Looking up I saw the other one, who buzzed me, way above me trying to get away......our tax dollars at work😂😂😂

We drove Highway 50 from Sacramento, CA to Pueblo, CO. We liked Northern Nevada so much, we now live half a mile from Highway 50 East of Carson City. Besides the views, there is history (Kit Carson, Pony Express, stagecoach routes, mining, etc. CAUTION: for most of Nevada, the highway passes through open range. Be alert for wild horses, cattle, deer, coyotes and other animals especially at dusk, dawn and during the night. Hitting one will ruin the day for you and the animal.

Technically, the region of US-50 from where it exits the Wasatch to the Sierra Nevada, is referred to in geology as the Basin and Range Province. As a geologist, I have explored the Basin and Range at different times for wildly different targets over a 45 year period. I, too, love the B&R. Eight of the 9 mountain building events that have affected western North America are represented in the B&R making it one of the more fascinating places on earth for a geologist. The latest stage of its evolution is still progressing and that is extension. The B&R is being stretched by the change in Pacific plate motions beginning 45 million or so years ago. Since that time the crust has been gradually thinning as it is pulled apart. Basically Salt Lake City and Reno have slid apart along vast listric normal faults over 50 miles in the last 5 million years. That's speed-demon fast in geological terms. Let me know if you want the full geological workup I did for the whole B&R from an oil exploration perspective 35 years ago.

Very interesting, that is a stretch that I have not seen. Two States I have not been to are 1)Maine, and 2) that one with an 'H' that I cannot drive to or ever remember how to spell correctly ... 🙄
I did drive the route between Winnemucca and Klamath Falls, OR to deliver a vendors trailer ... out there where the wild cattle and jackasses roam. The Doherty rim got interesting, as the big R.V. that was so hot to pass me on top of the hat must have panicked, suddenly he wouldn't go over 20 mph all the way to the bottom. I had to drop my T-case to the low side to find a range where I didn't have the engine wound too tight, yet had enough drag from it so I didn't have to ride the brakes to stay off of him. No problem, I was amused to see someone get his come-uppence after he tailgated me for 25 miles. He'd finally passed me, about 3 miles before starting down the rim, and disappeared in a high rate of hurry, probably having no idea what he was coming up to.

haha... I watched this just to see the footage going over Austin pass.... the one segment your video quit on! I've driven 50 all the way across Nevada, but in various segments. Never expected to encounter the switchbacks leaving Austin for Eureka.... hated that part of the drive! But I hate all mountain driving pretty much..... you're a brave soul! And doing it in a big rig??? I'm the little old lady in front of you driving 5mph over those passes :)

That was weird to see a guy walking in the middle of nowhere.

When I drove Hwy 50 I saw an old man walking along. He wasn't hitchhiking and he was completely unprepared....no backpack, no water bottles. It was very strange.

@@lennyp4782 Have you ever driven Hwy 50? I will never, ever drive that again by myself. Strangest stretch of road ever. Miles and miles and miles of desert. Very little visible life. Occasional car driving the opposite direction. Apparently not even the truckers take that route because I don't recall seeing even one. Lots of time I was completely alone and it was creepy af. Then, to see an old man hobbling along out of nowhere. No car nearby. No gear. Looking down while he walked. Later, out of nowhere a car came off a side road and started following me closely. I stressed my Honda Accord to the limit, close to 100mph, and he was doing the same, trying to keep up with me. It took about 20 minutes but I finally got away from him. Very weird experience.

"Ya catch up to them and they're doing the same speed as you." Yup... that's the way it is with the living_dead.
    Lot of traffic.

So... what if you break down on 50? Do they drone you in a mechanic?

Reasons to pass a semi truck. Spitting up rocks and debris that ruins my wind shield. Diesel fuel spewing all over my windshield. Can't see ahead through your truck. Reasons to follow a truck. Pretty hard to get into a head on with an ass hole who is texting while driving towards you. Following trucks saves fuel due to the lowered and constant speed. People behind me hate me because I make it harder for them to pass being that they want to pass both of us.
