before my dad died at 90 yrs old, i was lucky enough to meet a few of his buddies who also landed on omaha beach. they were warm, humble, likeable gentlemen. thanks dad.
Crying my eyes out. My grandpa was in WW2..I remember him every now and then talking about the war and Normandy. He met my grandma during the war when he was in England and he brought her to Canada (she was a war bride- grandma's story in itself is an amazing one.). One thing I remember was grandpa not liking or ever wanting pork, because of his time during the war. My grandpa loved me so much, but I never really got to ask him any questions about the war, as I was still a kid pretty much, and we were always told by my parents not to ask questions about the war, as it brought up some bad memories for grandpa. So I never got to hear his stories, other than what he would offer up. He passed away in 1994. One thing I badly want to say to the grandkids out there, if your grandparents/ great grandparents are still alive, don't be afraid to ask them about their lives. I even knew my great grandpa as he lived. with my grandparents. I so wish I had of asked my grandparents about their life. Huge regret that I never did.

Wow !! They are the living proof that we are all the same after all no matter our origins : we all bleed red !!! What a lesson for us who were so fortunate to never experience war like me in Canada . Makes me realize how much I take peace and freedom for granted . Seeing them reconcile their past is immensely powerful and so inspiring . Every youth should see that film for them to realize the cost of their freedom so they can appreciate life to the maximum and perpetuate that for their entire life . Thank you so much Franz and Lewis for sharing those terrible historical moments of your lifes so we can learn from that . And thanks to you too Larry for this project . P.S. : just a little remark from a Québécois (french canadian 😊) Larry !!! Maybe having english subtitles all along could be useful to reach as many people as it could/should . I give you my word that I will promote your channel , even advise all my acquaintances to explore it !!! Cheers ! Christain Caouette 🤘
Thank you Christian for your kind words. Lewis and Franz were the best!! Yes, it is immensely powerful seeing them reconcile on the same beach they were trying to kill one another on in 1944. Can imagine there’s an amount of guilt still remaining with the German solider not wanting to go to the American site, weather it was his choice or not, RIP to everyone on that day.
I am very pleased to able to watch this video. Thank you for posting it. I feel privileged to be allowed to take this amazing journey with this wonderful WW2 veteran. I'm going to put it on hold for a moment while I make myself a coffee and then come back to watch and absorb the experience. Thanks again.
Bill Blinky After sitting and watching I have a raft of emotions going on. On one hand I can see the American veteran is excited to see the place of the battle once again. Then on the other hand, as he tries to explain 'what he experienced' on that day, he became quite upset. I was very touched by the French people expressing their appreciation to him for his sacrifices and of course that of the many who were killed. It was wonderful too that young people showed an interest in this lovely US veteran who had been part of the battle and return 50 years later. So many feeling rushing about.
Bill, this is late, but I wanted to thank you for watching my film and your heartfelt words. It was a trip of a lifetime. I just returned from visiting Mr. Johnson. He is 93 now and living in Colorado. We both sat quiet and alone in his home and watching this film again together.
Visiting the Normandy battlefield sites is one the most emotional experiences in my life. 4 visits to date. Abiding memories. David McCabe Dublin ireland
Fantastic documentary. I like how you incorporated random people that came along into the documentary, very organic. Even the German ex-soldier not being subtitled and speak his own language for the documentary was interesting. This guy seems fantastic, vibrant, and is truly a hero.
your videos should be movies and it is nice to see a D-Day survivor get recognized for what he did and what he sacrificed for his country and for France

First off God Bless all the people that fought in WW2(both sides). Also God Bless the ones that are still with us. I have a pretty crazy family story/scenario. I have a Grandfather on my Mom's side that landed and fought during Operation Overlord for the United States. I also have a Grandfather that fought for the German Wehrmacht during WW2. I would Love to put a Book together of their services of War. Both have passed on now but I have Memories forever.
I can't imagine how hard it is to go back there. I was working in the WTC on 9/11, I could never go back, can't look at the Manhattan Skyline anymore. The "Freedom Tower" only reminds me of what we lost, and never gave me any solace that we rebuilt the area.
All that have fallen in every war American war and our allies God bless their families the torture they've been through in the sites I've seen are horrendous may God be with them and with all of the world for peace because peace is what we need to stop things like that amen
The closing lines of the Irish folksong 'Bold Finnian Men' seem appropriate: "We may have brave men, but we'll never have better. Glory Oh! Glory Oh! . . ."
such heroic men. what's left of the ww2 vets thank me for my service as an infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan. No way what these men did and endured far surpass us today. These are the men that inspired me to join. These are people we should look up to, not Bruce Jenner etc.
Amazing how without hesitation they would have killed one another all those years ago but now would share a cup of tea and exchange stories with a handshake ,
Thank you Marine. Hope you will find part two also. This is an amazing story. Lewis Johnson passed away recently. He is my adopted Father: ruclips.net/video/fIOctme5weA/видео.html
It must've been horrible times for these men, obviously. Them revisiting this scene of horror, which reminded them of this day of death when their buddies where killed. The german dude was 18 years old, just imagine this, he was like a child in that time and he even stated it like that. When I think of the series Band of Brothers, when they said if we would have met under different circumstances we probably could have been friends. And this is so true, because if this fucking war would have never happened they would have been friends. Bless these men and thank them for their sacrifices...
"More ships than German soldiers" it was no picnic for either side. My grandfather was USN he didn't talk about the war much either. I cant' imagine going through this at 18 yrs old. Rip to all who paid the ultimate price for their country.
A great documentary, sir, that is personal and very touching. Well done. (Question: I can only assume that these two soldiers have passed in to glory by now? Do you know?)
Did you and Franz Gockel discuss Heinrich Severloh? Mr. Gockel was at WN62 with Severloh and as I'm sure you know, Severloh claims to have killed as many as 1000 soldiers on D Day. I'm curious as to what Mr. Gockel may have seen (if anything) with regards to this? I've just watched part 2 of your story and it was very good. Thank you and all who participated in this production.
Kevin, I interviewed Franz Gockel with the help of a German translator in 2004 on Omaha Beach. If you would be interested in the entire 90 minute interview let me know. It is in my archives. There would be a fee to retrieve it, process it, render and upload it for you. Thank you for watching my film. Please watch and share a very special song tribute to our Veterans. God bless you!! "You know, this D-day thing has a very special meaning for me. And I'm not referring merely to the anxieties of the day. The anxieties that were a natural part of sending in an invasion where you knew that many hundreds of boys were going to give their lives or be maimed forever." "But, my mind goes back so often to this fact; On D-day my own son graduated from West Point, and after his training and with his division he came over with his division, but that was some time after." "But, on the very day he was graduating these men came here, British, Americans, and our other Allies to storm these beaches for one purpose only;" "Not to gain anything for ourselves, not to fulfill any ambitions that America had for conquest, but just to preserve Freedom. Systems of self-governance in the World." "Many thousands of men, and women, have died for ideals such as these." "And here again, in the 20th Century for the second time Americans, along with the rest of the free World, but Americans had to come across the oceans to defend those same values." "Now, my own son has been very fortunate, he has had a very full life since then. He is a father of four lovely children that are very precious to my wife and me." "But these young boys, so many of them, over whose graves we tread, looking at and wondering, contemplating about their sacrifices, they were cut off in their prime." "They have families that grieve for them, but they never knew the great experiences of going through life like my son." "I devoutly hope that we will never again have to see such things as these. I think and hope and pray that humanity has learned more than we had learned up until that time." "But, these people gave us a chance, and they bought time for us so that we could do better than we had before." "So, every time I come back to these beaches, or any time that I think of that day, so many years ago now, I say we MUST find some way to work towards peace and to gain an eternal peace for this World." ---Former President and Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, while visiting the D-day Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France on the 20th anniversary of the D-day invasion; "Operation; Overlord." June 6th 1964 🇺🇲

At about 5:10, as he is about to board the shuttle , notice the gum chewing girl. She is totally oblivious to what is being discussed? Normandy? Omaha Beach? and most likely WW2?
Thanks Gregory for watching my film. I agree with your comment, she was oblivious to what Mr. Johnson was talking about or her history. That is why I am trying to get my films into more schools.
I've been studying this conflict for six decades and have come to only one conclusion, it could have been avoided. Of course that's politics and we are left with only the events and results. If you would like to correspond, I may of be some help and since I do not have a debit card at this time, am unable to contribute financially, but that will change. Researching this war is akin to peeling an onion and one must have an impartial perspective. God bless you and your endeavor.

The German soldier not wanting to see American graves after showing the American around his own graves was like he was seeking pity for their losses, while not caring about the American's losses. Excuses or not, I think it was on purpose, myself. He was still mad over his comrades deaths. The day must surely be tough for anyone who served during that time and went through there. The American held himself with pride. It was a great thing to end the adventures of the NAZI. The world may not be so pretty today had they won. Between them and the Japanese it was going to be very bad. I thank you all for your service, and MY freedom. ~S~ = Salute to you all.
Another fine comment and observation King Snowman. I agree with what you said. When I produced this film I too think Mr. Gockel was hesitant to visit the American Cemetery. Mr. Johnson will be celebrating his 95th Birthday this week.
Oh Wow.. Still Alive. That's wonderful to hear. I enjoyed listening to his memories. Sad they had to happen. But He was sure keen about his. And great job to you as well. Thanks for the information. I will subscribe. N look around for more Cool films.

A machine gunner firing down on Omaha , it had to be a navy dude to meet him, cuz a ranger or soldier would of stuck a stiletto right in the temple of that dude , he took to much life on that beach to keep breathing.
In the 12 weeks, 6 June 1944 - 31 August 1944, the Germans lost almost 300,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured. This is the period in which Gen. Montgomery was overall Ground-Forces Commander. The German losses in men and material was greater than the huge losses in their defeat in Tunisia. The Germans casualties at Stalingrad were much greater, but that was a 6-month battle. Proportionately, the Normandy losses were just as great.

Thank you for your comments Karsten. I appreciate it.
Fantastic piece of historic data! Bravo. My heart goes out to all the veterans
Such a great documentary. I cried through it myself
I love my Canadian Veterans. Hope you have seen some of their stories and my film, Lest They Be Forgotten Canada.
I'm into your channel non-stop since I discovered it !!
Would you be interested in sponsoring some of my Canadian WWII war stories? Please contact me directly if you are. Thank you!! Larry Cappetto, EMAIL: lcappetto@icloud.com
Voices of History Thanks for sharing that visit too. I am pleased for both of you.
What a great guy.
Visiting the Normandy battlefield sites is one the most emotional experiences in my life. 4 visits to date. Abiding memories. David McCabe Dublin ireland
Please watch my first film on Normandy, Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Thanks for sharing this video and part 2 as i'm about to watch.
you know its awesome to see two known enemy shaking hands and yet it was their governments that put them there, that's the saddest part bout it
Fantastic documentary. I like how you incorporated random people that came along into the documentary, very organic. Even the German ex-soldier not being subtitled and speak his own language for the documentary was interesting.
This guy seems fantastic, vibrant, and is truly a hero.
Thank you for your kind words and for watching my film. I appreciate it greatly!!
It would be nice to have known what he said in German though
I agree, but I wanted to leave some of the dialogue in is original language. I did have it all translated for me by a German interpreter.
Voices of History I guess I should start learning Deutsche hahaha
your videos should be movies and it is nice to see a D-Day survivor get recognized for what he did and what he sacrificed for his country and for France
this was a great story ! thank you !
Glad i found this video.
This is awesome!!
THANK YOU
Also just have to say, that's one cool jacket ;)
God bless ❤❤❤❤

I feel lucky I even get to watch this. I have been there a few times but never had the honor of meeting anyone there. I have mentioned this on another one of your videos but I will say it again but I think its REALLY important that you are talking to all these guys before its too late. I am sure monetary rewards are nothing but you are doing such important and absolutely necessary work I hope it fulfills you. Thx u.
Such a heartfelt warm comment. Your words have been very encouraging to me. Thank you!!! I would like for you to view this new webpage I have created to further honor and pay tribute to all the veterans I have lost since beginning this work 15 years ago. Brilliant watch thank you very much!
Ah, Jamie thank you kindly!!! This was one of my most favorite films to produce. Lewis Johnson is still alive.
One of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. Please make another, the story so deserves it. True Hero and one beautiful soul, I salute he you sir!!.
Never forget.
Wunderful Documentary!
Its nice to see both sides thx
If these two met face to face on June 6th, they would have torn each other apart. Time is a great healer.
AMEN!!!
Have you seen my 9/11 film? It is very powerful. Let me know if you want to see it. God bless you!! Larry Cappetto, WEBSITE: larrycappetto.com
Brilliant documentary, well done
All that have fallen in every war American war and our allies God bless their families the torture they've been through in the sites I've seen are horrendous may God be with them and with all of the world for peace because peace is what we need to stop things like that amen
R.I.P. all ww2 veterans that served this great country
Thank you for watching my film: Larry R. Cappetto - larrycappetto.com
I want to go there some day
Hard for them to remember and talk about, but in a few years all these eye witnesses that were there will be gone.
The closing lines of the Irish folksong 'Bold Finnian Men' seem appropriate: "We may have brave men, but we'll never have better. Glory Oh! Glory Oh! . . ."
Many Men Won't See the Sunset On The Longest Day in History
such heroic men. what's left of the ww2 vets thank me for my service as an infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan. No way what these men did and endured far surpass us today. These are the men that inspired me to join. These are people we should look up to, not Bruce Jenner etc.
Need English subtitle in many key locations to make this good work even more worth while
Amazing how without hesitation they would have killed one another all those years ago but now would share a cup of tea and exchange stories with a handshake ,
Amazing incredible account, loss of words..
Todd thank you for watching my film. Lewis is still alive at 97...Larry
A great documentary, sir, that is personal and very touching. Well done.
(Question: I can only assume that these two soldiers have passed in to glory by now? Do you know?)
I am glad you got to watch this. Please watch part 2. I hope you are subscribed to my channel. God bless you!!

What a great guy. 👍
I smiled this entire video lol he's so absolutely delightful. 😊
Edit;
Well, until about 20 minutes or so anyway lol
A trip of a lifetime for me to go back to Normandy with Lewis Johnson and meet Franz Gockel. It brings me much joy to read your comments.
Men and women looked so much better backed then.
"You know, this D-day thing has a very special meaning for me. And I'm not referring merely to the anxieties of the day. The anxieties that were a natural part of sending in an invasion where you knew that many hundreds of boys were going to give their lives or be maimed forever."
"But, my mind goes back so often to this fact;
On D-day my own son graduated from West Point, and after his training and with his division he came over with his division, but that was some time after."
"But, on the very day he was graduating these men came here, British, Americans, and our other Allies to storm these beaches for one purpose only;"
"Not to gain anything for ourselves, not to fulfill any ambitions that America had for conquest, but just to preserve Freedom. Systems of self-governance in the World."
"Many thousands of men, and women, have died for ideals such as these."
"And here again, in the 20th Century for the second time Americans, along with the rest of the free World, but Americans had to come across the oceans to defend those same values."
"Now, my own son has been very fortunate, he has had a very full life since then. He is a father of four lovely children that are very precious to my wife and me."
"But these young boys, so many of them, over whose graves we tread, looking at and wondering, contemplating about their sacrifices, they were cut off in their prime."
"They have families that grieve for them, but they never knew the great experiences of going through life like my son."
"I devoutly hope that we will never again have to see such things as these. I think and hope and pray that humanity has learned more than we had learned up until that time."
"But, these people gave us a chance, and they bought time for us so that we could do better than we had before."
"So, every time I come back to these beaches, or any time that I think of that day, so many years ago now, I say we MUST find some way to work towards peace and to gain an eternal peace for this World."
---Former President and Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, while visiting the D-day Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France on the 20th anniversary of the D-day invasion; "Operation; Overlord." June 6th 1964 🇺🇲
I so enjoyed this, thank you. What a sweet gentleman, and still handsome at 81! Are he and wife still living?
1940s teenagers went into those beaches facing almost certain death, in 2018 teenagers have their faces in their phones and want everything handed to them.
I’m a Vietnam Combat Veteran & I sure do know what it was like on that day, June 6th & the feeling that that man felt during that whole day was just as bad as it was n 1944 & the thoughts that he had in his head was more than words can describe & I can only imagine what they were & I guess I could just leave it at that & folks it’s a terrible feeling & what more can I say except, “there it is !”

that tank story.....
Is this man still alive?
Lewis Johnson is 93 now and living in Colorado.
What a salt of the earth gentleman.
I guess the people on the Denver Airport shuttle didnt comprehend what he said when he told them he landed on Omaha Beach on D Day. Or, maybe they just dont know? I'd have been first to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him.
It was like yesterday we made this trip Kevin. It was one of the highlights of my life and work. Mr. Johnson was my adopted Father and we laid him to rest last July at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. I have a video of the service on my Voices of History Channel if you are interested. I miss him dearly and all the places we went together. We loved going into schools and teaching our students the price for freedom. Very emotional presentations. Many of them are also on my channel.
Thank you for watching my film.

@@VoicesofHistory Sorry to hear he has passed on. How about Mr. Gockle? Is he still living? I live in North Carolina. Me and my Son are going to Normandy on October 25th. We will start our D Day tour at Pegasus Bridge and work our way Westward. We have 4 1/2 days there before we spend the rest of our time in Paris. Do you have any tips or suggestions for our stay? I haven't watched part 2 yet, but I will. Such an honor for you to have been able to do this for this great veteran. He seems like he was such a nice man. I wish I could have met him.
Kevin Franz Gockel passed away shortly after my interview with him. He and Mr. Johnson are two of my heroes from WWII.
My suggestion for your trip are take lots of photos and video. Omaha Beach is holy ground. The American Cemetery in Coleville is amazing!! I pray for safety for you and your son. God bless you!!
great to see .maybe the french tv station could sent someone who speaks english
+rene karp hello right now i am here on RUclips
.. and i think it is fine... glad to see Mr Johnson.. great video and great man... i am surprised about his vitality.. he is fantastic i will be in Normandy on june 04 next month
Gregory, feel free to contact me. Thanks for your kind words. EMAIL: lcappetto@icloud.com
I find it sad that the German veteran knew many of the people in the German Cemetery.
I walked there with him and filmed it all. I agree, it is sad and very sobering!!

God bless all victims of this damned war. The mankind doesnt learned about it. Thats very sad.
Je ne sais pas si cela est possible mais une traduction en français serait tellement mieux pour ceux qui ne comprennent pas l'anglais
This generation could tell the millennials about sacrifice and patriotism because they don’t have a clue , this is the age of beta men.
I’d love to know what Franz was saying in German, especially when he was at the German cemetery
As long as Jewish high finance exists, there will always be wars because they earn a lot of money from them.
I plan to attend his 95th Birthday party and will take some video to share with you and others. Here is my complete catalog of films: lcappetto.wixsite.com/honorstore
The Mulberry was a artificial harbour built by the British without it D day would have failed it allowed all heavy tanks to hit the beach
La Cambe ( the german cemetery) is not as well kept and nice as the Omaha American cemetery, I felt sad when I was there...
Thank you for your comments Hill.
