So we've gone over the IFRA stuff for fragrance oils, which all makes sense. But how do we use essential oils in soap when IFRA certificates don't exist? Let's discuss.

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

I literally started making skin products because I developed terrible allergies to "fragrance" and several other common ingredients in commercial products. This helps immensely in my goal of only using EOs and natural colorants. Thank you!!

How timely! My husband just gifted me an alembic still for making hydrosols and essential oils (I've been admiring them for 3 years now - he was pleasantly surprised at the potential for homemade gin 😂). I'm super excited to get started! For the test phase I'll probably go harvest a bunch of juniper berries and Douglas fir needles, setting as that's very prominent here in the pnw. Have you gone over using hydrosols at all yet (I'll be honest, I just went through a year of total burnout and mental health troubles and have all but completely disappeared on the soapmaking sphere - poor business performance and miscarriage hit me hard. But I'm almost halfway through and I'm finally having a little boy, my passion is starting to reawaken).

All of the love! I understand that pain all too well, and congrats on the baby boy! I basically spent the entirety of my pregnancy with Eowyn counting down the days until she was safe and out of my body, which I had deemed a hostile environment following my miscarriages. Take care of you. Soap is always here. So am I. 💜
I like that you’re getting to play with your alembic! You’ll have to let us know how it goes. I’ve talked about hydrosols in a project Soapway series when one of the Sudsers was playing with them but haven’t done a dedicated video, I don’t believe.

@@MrsSoapAndClay Yes, it's been rough, I do have 4 living daughters, but it was my 5th miscarriage and it just got me a little harder with all the other things going on, my sisters were all pregnant at the same time - I was trying to hide my struggle and not acknowledge it and it just made me strangely numb. I just told myself I was lucky it was early, not ectopic, not stillborn, not acknowledge that it was still hard and painful. Then I was extremely anxious the entire first trimester, overanalyzing everything. Now that we're 18 weeks and I can feel him move, I finally feel peace again. I finally started feeling the passion again, ideas started flowing and the hope is back. Sorry for the negativity there, I'm just now starting to recognize that I wasn't well for a long while and can't help talking about it. Thank you for the love and support 🥰
Anyhow, I will definitely share my experience with the still and hopefully making some awesome soaps and stuff with it all... I'll look for that video too 💕

I love essential oils but yes they are a different beast to work with when using in soaps or body products. Research, research, research for sure. Great info as always in this vid. So pleased to hear Scout doing well.

Before I was injured and just started making body products. I measured everything. I still do with my candle and wax melts. Never used a cup or tablespoon of this.

Some of the EOs from BA do have usage rate recommendations. At least the ones I’ve purchased from them, they did.

Thank you for this! Excellent info and help! As I’m sure you know some people are losing their minds over certain EO’s like cinnamon. Glad to hear Scout is doing well!

So… isn’t it common for it to rain in WA? 😂
    Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Ha! Basically one should assume that it will rain every day up here. Don’t know how anything gets built, but my house is currently dripping in places it should never drip.
