    The square wave frequency coming out of that unit was the issue with your power meter. Most electronics don’t care about the way the electrical wave form looks but some are very sensitive and will throw a fit when connected to anything other that a pure sine wave.

    Thanks so much for this review. I didn't realize this even existed. Living in North Florida, something like this would be a major bonus. Aside from major storms, we're guaranteed a string of some pretty nasty thunderstorms in the summer. While the city power rarely goes out, here in the county I will be without power for a minimum of 12hrs at least 3-5 times. So if I could just plug in a lamp, a fan and charge my phone without having to leave my car running after a storm...I'd be str8!
    I'm on the Milwaukee train, so I luckily already have several batteries (including the big guy) and a couple of chargers. But for those who don't-especially those who generally have no use for power tools-the sticker shock may leave you questioning whether it's worth it. I resisted battery powered tools for years, but finally needed a good trimmer and had the choice between battery powered or gas powered. Now I'm all in. Simple fact is, for anyone who doesn't know, not only do those batteries run the tools wonderfully, they also hold a full charge just sitting on a shelf for a ridiculously long time! So if you find you need it, it'll likely be there. The cost may seem high, but any emergency kit should have at least one of these.
    And no...I have ZERO affiliation with the brand. I'm just really pleased with the quality I paid for, which is becoming a rare thing. 😁

      I’m in NE FL too, just picked up two of these yesterday for an emergency - awesome idea from Milwaukee to utilize a ton of money of batteries that I already had and hadn’t considered using for pedestrian application. Huge savings over standalone battery systems. We hope we don’t have to use them with this storm but we’re glad we found these!

    Some of these questions are ridiculous. The man just said it wouldn’t power anything that requires heat. Toaster, coffee machine etc. y’all steadily asking him the same questions. No, it’s intended use is for small items. Y’all want it to power a welder, 5 toasters and a blender an a/c unit etc!! No no no!! 🙄🙄🙄

    When I first heard about this Top-Off unit I thought it was a stupid idea. I mean, why pay for this when you can get a battery backup like Jackery? But now that I'm accumulating MW power tools with more M18 batteries I realize that in an emergency the M18 Top Off could come handy to tap into power sitting idle in my MW batteries. Thanks for the review! Cheers!

    I didn't hear you say. Would I be correct to assume this is modified sine wave rather than pure sine wave?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  4 года назад +3

      I was unable to find that info through a ton of digging. I am assuming that since they are not bragging about a pure sine wave, it must be modified. But it does say safe for laptops and such. That is an unknown to me.

    • @behemothinferno
      @behemothinferno 4 года назад +3

      I'm 99% certain this is a modified sinewave output inverter as the pure sine wave models require much more electronic components that would definitely not be able to fit in that tiny footprint they managed to create.

    • @Pro1er
      @Pro1er 4 года назад +2

      I've seen inverter generators that claim to be pure sine wave but they are in fact modified sine wave. I highly doubt that this is a pure sine wave unit.

    • @doug667
      @doug667 4 года назад +4

      I know nobody reads warning labels, but... the first words on the side of the unit are: “Warning: output non-sinusoidal”. Which tells me it is not even a modified sine wave, probably just a square wave. Still a nice product.

    Interesting...next gen - stackable batteries for added capacity and power.

    • @Tro1086
      @Tro1086 3 года назад

      They should be making that NOW! What am I supposed to do with 175w? Make a larger inverter, 1000 to 2000 watt (I know, 2000w might be a bit much on 18v batteries, youd have to have a bunch of them to do it, 6+), able to take multiple batteries, 4+. 175 watts is pretty useless to me, I already have two of the battery adapters with USB ports, and that seems like about all this new one would be used for most of the time, except its 3 times larger.
      Doesnt DeWalt make a larger one like that, that even charges batteries when when plugged into AC power.
      Id love to see one that also had a jump starter capability for cars, plug multiple batteries in and it steps the 18v down to 12-13v so you can jump start a weak car battery. I once jump started my work truck battery with two M18 9.0 batteries, not really ideal, but it got me home. Something to do it properly would be pretty sweet.
      I know they are comming out with the MX Fuel crap, but thats way to expensive for the average guy, thats more like stuff large companies would be buying.

      They have, it's called the Carry-On is $600 and takes 4 batteries...and is massively overpriced after you factor in 4 12.0 batteries.
      It's pure sine wave instead of this modified junk 175w. Not sure why this guy loves it so much...I think roll of the dice of whst he tried it with. I suppose if it works with all your stuff it woukd be great.
      Hook it up to an oscilloscope and the modified wave looked like garbage and ran everything way hotter than I felt comfortable using long term. Smoked a 80w scooter charger while camping.
      Check with a thermal camera before you leave anything expensive running off it. If it's cool, chances are you're ok.

    a bunch of reviewers on the Milwaukee website said this thing shuts off after an hour, but ONE person said it was after an hour of being IDLE.. can you confirm this? I'm looking at getting it for running my router during power outages and if i need to press the button for the 120V outlet every hour, it defeats the purpose!!

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  2 года назад +1

      IMHO, this is not safe to run a router. I woud be sure to have a pure sine wave product to run sensitive electronics like that. If there is no load, it will shut off in an hour. If you have a significant load, it will remain running. Since you capitalized IDLE, my answer is that it will shut off. Look for a Pure Sine wave device made for sensitive electronics, or better yet, a UPS so you wont even lose power to your router when the power does go off.

    EGO has a similar device I bought a year and a half ago.
    Very good portable charger and and it will take my 7.5 Ah battery.
    EGO, also, has a newer one, wherein one could mount multiple batteries for even longer life. 3000W
    Both with a 120 outlet and all the rest.
    I just use my usual EGO 56v yard tool batteries whenever I want to use it.
    Oh, heck, I just searched and watched where y'all already looked at it. NVM

      If you hear me talking in here and in the description, the EGO unit is the one that blew up all the crop in my RV with too high of voltage. That EGO Nexus was the downward spiral of EGO quality. It seemed that from there they worked to rush to be the first to market with many other items and really used the customer as R and D. I have not had luck with any of the new EGO stuff including this years lawn mower and 2 stage snow blower. We used to recommend EGO, not anymore.
