My grandpa left me some money and it started burning a hole in my pocket. Wow the 940-2 really is the real deal. One of the best pocket knives I have even owned. Literally a game changer and a life changer. I used a German made K55K for years. Heck for the price of a 940-2 I could buy at least 4 of those in top factory offering. Thought about some of my other kids but, Mike is my favorite. So all for one in my book these days. Kids are like cars. You gotta have 4 or 5 till you have one you like.
cant belive warren osborne just passed away. rip. the whole month of december i was watching tons of videos on the 940 and was about to purchase one. the 940 is what got me into youre channel. sad day for the knife world.
I've come to the realization over the years that no production knife leaves the factory in the condition I require it to be. I don't know if attention to detail isn't what it used to be, or we expect more from a knife than we used to, or a little of both. But every time I pull my 42-year-old Buck 110 out of the closet for an oil and polish, I'm amazed at the fit and finish :)
@3501chris. Yes its true. I asked for some clips. A month ago. And benchmade is awesome. I asked for 10 black oxide clps. And they sent them with no problem :)
What a classic knife. It is the knife I want more than any others. However, all who try end up getting an empty box and an angry note from customs. Some genius decided in 2011 that knives that flick open with a wrist action (like this does when you hold the lock open, allegedly) aren't welcome on this great island. So now, In Australia, whenever you import a knife, you have to hope the detent is strong enough to stay put when some guy in rubber gloves holds it upside down and shakes it like maraca.
Welcome to the empire buddy! Here in Canada we have them shipped with the pivot screw tightened to insanity. I once received a dropped mini grip in for a re-profiling back from benchmade so tight it was useless until I found a torx to access the blade. Sadly they will not allow any zero tolerance across the border because they are clearly flick/gravity knives and have no other means of opening.... such as a thumb stud. For a Canadian, I have one nice collection after many, many years.
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors how do you recon you’d go shipping it disassemble part at a time like blade by its self. The scales and then the lock action with the screws.
I been looking at this knife now for about 2 yrs Rob, as far as this knife collector goes its a must for rotation in edc with my enzos, para 2, skyline , american trads of which I am using more and more due to UK knife laws. As you say Rob, its a natural companion to the para 2. I know this vid was made in 2013 and it is not the first time I have watched it, watched the other one as well where it all went wrong and you got the blade with your you tube name etched on it and used it in your openings of vids for a while, anyway enough procrastination about 940, getting one this year. A must for any knife affectionado.
Thanks for the comment, Cody, and for the video response. I actually remember watching that video some time ago, and I completely understand your point. The tip of the 940 is tailor-made for prying tasks, and the pivot is very strong for a knife of its weight. That said, I'm not sure the brand-wide characterization applies in this case, like it does with Surefire and Fenix, for instance. Spyderco definitely makes some models which are extremely strong and tough, witness the Gayle Bradley.
Thanks for the question. Although I'm not particularly a fan of assisted opening knives, I do have a couple of suggestions. From Kershaw, there are the Blur and Knockout. The Blur is slightly longer and thumb stud only. The Knockout has a flipper option. Both are American made and feature Sandvik 14C28N steel. Another good choice is the Benchmade Barrage with Axis Assist. It uses 154CM steel. The Kershaws will run about $50, the BM about $100. Better steel in the BM, Kershaws sharper.
Almost 6 years later and they're both arguably the best two EDC knives available. Unfortunately, both have gone up in price considerably, without improved blade steels.
Well boys its 2015 and had my 940 for about 2 weeks now, thank you Rob for the care and consideration of your service, I was most chuffed to see it appear in the CRKT Ripple review. It was interesting to see how you stacked it up against the Para 2 which has always been a go to knife for me in my various pursuits. The 940 is an absolute dream, its been in my pocket since it came, its not easy to explain, but it feels Just Right and as far as use goes it did a real dandy job in extracting talons from a dead buzzard, tricky business, would have been more tricky if the bird had been alive L.O.L. If you are a knife user and want the best edc around, buy a 940 you will not be disappointed, Honest. God bless all.
Thank you for a very comprehensive review and the point on the pocket clip was well received. All parts should be in line with a first class folder. I have had one in hand and it feels perfect; it is the "grail" for me for a EDC folder. PRP
P2: You might also consider the Benchmade Triage. It's not assisted, but has a very rust-resistant steel, N680, is easy to re-sharpen, and has a dedicated seat belt cutter that folds out of the spine. The Axis Lock mechanism is very fast and easy to deploy without an assist spring. In fact, many Barrage owners de-assist their knives. Kershaw does apply a sharper edge than Benchmade from the factory, but it's pretty fragile. Please reference my sharpening service video if you're interested.
I've never owned a single Benchmade... for whatever reason their models just have never grabbed my attention and compelled me to buy them. This review though has at least given me pause and made me re-eval my natural avoidance of the brand. Not saying I am gonna rush out and buy a 940, but I do at least appreciate it now. :) Good review.
I agree with you on the clip. When I first got the knife I thought the clip looked out of place and clumsily big even though, as you say, it's been the same shaped clip from the beginning (apart from the clip coating). I've recently swapped it out with their deep carry version found on the Contego and Adamas 'cause I thought the original clip showed too much of the knife in pocket for EDC'ing (gotta think of the Sheeple!). It's a smaller, thinner clip and though it changes the handle feel a little, it suits the knife much better IMO. Also, agree 100% about Benchmade's customer service. FANTASTIC. Asked for replacement 950 Rift torx screws + extra deep carry clip, "no problems", shipped to me with an extra arrow clip thrown in. Love ya guts Benchmade! :D
I'm kind of with you on this one... I don't love the company, and many of their models miss the mark, as far as I'm concerned. However, Benchmade does some things very well. Their level of precision in manufacturing is top notch for a maker of production knives. The Axis Lock is an amazing locking system -- it's a joy to operate, extremely strong and reliable, and completely ambidextrous. And in the case of the 940, it's truly a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Go get one :)
Thanks for giving your baby up for a few days, brother. The review and the sharpening were both a pleasure. I think you'll be happy when she gets home :)
Well, that's a good question. I haven't held one in my hand, but my thoughts are that the handle shape looks pretty uncomfortable. The choil area looks like it might accomodate 2 fingers, but you'd struggle to get comfortable. I'm not in love with the blade shape in that large a knife, and the coating is not "clear" Cerakote as advertised, but actually gray solid. BM doesn't have the best coating process; I'd expect it not to wear well and have a bad effect on the pivot. Just my 2 cents.
I'll go out on limb. The 940 is better for all around use. I no longer carry Spyderco folding knives for one reason. They are just to fragile. Spyderco knives are superior cutters but lack the toughness for all the prying jobs that an edc knife is called on to do however, I have had a lot of trouble getting my 940 sharp.
Well you stacked the 940 up to one of your tops the Para Military 2. I know just by having that comparison you're putting the 940 high on your list. Great review brother & that new edge the 940 is wearing gets her to where I needed her to be : )
I have a 940 en route. I've been waiting for years to buy this. I just wish I could get Benchmade to swap handle scales or sell them after market. I'd love the 943 scales on the 940, or the -1 scales on the 940.
Dear ApostleP i recently found your channel and in so doing have bought a spyderco pm2, benchmade 940, and an Edge Pro apex! Just curious as to what angles do you sharpen these 2 at? Love you stuff sir and God bless
Strange... i love this knife. At least i think. Keep on viewing reviews of this knife. And still i never bought one. And concerning price, is it overpriced in US, in our region it will cost $200 or much more. Oh.... what a difficult position i am in....Anyway, i love your review Mr. Rob!
Hey Rob! Just got my 940-2 and realized I have you to thank for my love and admiration for the 940. Absolutely love this knife! Have you been able to hold any of the 940-2's? Love the G10 handles! Grace and peace my brother!
Your right about the tip i broke the tip off of my spyderco Worker model just cutting thick rope. I like spyderco don't get me wrong but most of their tips are thin.
I'm not 100% sure of this, but I've done it with my griptilian and will try it with my 940 which I ordered last night when it gets here, but i think you can take the "arrow" clip from a BM barrage or similar, and put it on the 940. It is the powder coating that wears well too.
What is your thoughts on the griptilian or benchmade as a whole company? I know their price point is high and quality control could be better, but it seems like there’s virtually no end to what they will do for customer service.
Rob, do you have a specific brand of mini torx screwdrivers that you recommend? I am looking for a good quality set for doing regular maintenance on my knives because the cheaper ones tend to wear out after only a few uses.
I'm way ahead of you, Charr. I've got a more recent video of my personal 940, which I sent to Benchmade for a new clip (parkerized split arrow clip) and some laser engraving. I love it!
Benchmade is excellent about clips. Just got off the phone with them. One ring and a real person answers. I then say id like a black oxide standard clip. She asks my name which I give her. She then recites my address and says the clip is on its way. No charge. That's why I love Benchmade.
Absolutely right, Chris -- Benchmade's customer service is awesome! I just thought this old clip was very much worth saving. It has way too much character to throw away :)
I have a black Oxide split arrow I just replaced with a standard. You can have it. Its brand new. I don't like the way they pocket. Ill send it along later this week
Thanks for the advice. I had a chance to play with them today and found the Adamas too heavy. Ended up going with a zero tolerance 0560. Loved the look of the titanium side :)
Important to realize that I'm talking about taking a generally horrible factory edge and making it into a precise, symmetrical, highly polished edge. Slow, deliberate and patient are the watchwords here. With the right stones, down to 120 grit, the Edgepro is plenty fast without hogging chunks of material. Hello. I recently lost my CRKT MK-16. I love that knife and the locking mechanism. However I'm now in the market for something with an assisted opening and I want it to be an American made knife. I'm a firefighter/Paramedic so whatever I buy needs to be sturdy and sharp out of the box (unless we can workout a deal where you might be willing to sharpen for me for a fee). Do you have any suggestions?
You’re paying $225 because you’re getting a full size knife that weighs 2.4 ounces. You could buy a book 110 automatic for $180 and have 8 ounces in your pocket
I have enjoyed my 940 for the past 8 months. Today I had an AXIS failure in both Omega springs rendering the knife useless. I will be shipping it back to Benchmade soon. Do you have any tips on making the AXIS last longer? Video: ruclips.net/video/KHhjeLNQPfY/видео.html
I really don't. I've never had a failure myself. But springs are springs. Number of cycles is the most significant factor in the life span of spring, so constant open and close cycles for the purpose of recreation would be the biggest cause of failure but who in his right mind would stop flipping his 940?! :)
Hey Rob - I'm sorry to have to do this....but I thought you should know... www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-940S-1-Osborne-Black-AXIS--21327 your grail knife! I just preordered mine...940...in carbon fiber..cant get any better than that! it also has cpm-s90v and blue anodized spacers. didnt want to heat the credit card up too much but i think its going to be an amazing knife and who knows might be tough to get ahold of in the beginning, i just love cf!
TheApostleP Ya, i have never owned a 940 only held them, just dont like green, or aluminum in a knife really unless its grey or black, and i never had a knife in s90v. I know it's one of your favorites so i will definitely send it to you after i get it for a review, unless you end up buying one. =)

Yea your favorite have to check it out

The pre and post sharpening was awesome! I laughed out loud!
I just picked up a 940 and it does feel good
I have a terrible feeling I'm going to be £180 lighter soon.
I have a PM2 in Maxamet which is insane but I've always wanted a 940.
Thank you for your suggestions. It's greatly appreciated.
I've been carrying Camp's 940 most of the weekend, and after my "test drive," it remains high on my wish list :)

Hey Rob! Just got my 940-2 and realized I have you to thank for my love and admiration for the 940. Absolutely love this knife! Have you been able to hold any of the 940-2's? Love the G10 handles!

Your right about the tip i broke the tip off of my spyderco Worker model just cutting thick rope. I like spyderco don't get me wrong but most of their tips are thin.
I already had this knife but i love watching youre videos i hope i can send you a few if my knives for sharpening be safe and god bless you

TheApostleP Do you still regularly carry your 940?
Which one would you go with between the new Benchmade foray and the ZT 0630? Considering the steel choices and warranties.
Benchmade is excellent about clips. Just got off the phone with them. One ring and a real person answers. I then say id like a black oxide standard clip. She asks my name which I give her. She then recites my address and says the clip is on its way. No charge. That's why I love Benchmade.

Awesome! I'd appreciate that :)
Great knife, I really wish it didn't have the purple back spacer.
That knife is unbelievable when I purchased him hee is now in my pocket for feu ares and its like keys of hous in packet
Apostle P what do you think of the BM 940-1501 with G-10 handle scales and cpm-20cv steel? Enjoy the educational videos and God bless.
+Dale Wagner Stay tuned, Dale. It's a positive one.
Years later this little sucker costs around $250 in Europe, why I haven't bought it years ago? Not sure, ehhh
Got the money for the clone . After the let down on the crooked river I feel fully justified for getting the clone !
Apostle, if you had to choose EDC this or the 275 Adamas from your other video, which do you use?
For an EDC blade, definitely the 940. It weighs about 1/3 of an Adamas. At nearly 8 ounces, the Adamas is much too heavy for me for EDC.
Thanks for the advice. I had a chance to play with them today and found the Adamas too heavy. Ended up going with a zero tolerance 0560. Loved the look of the titanium side :)
the 940 is a free swinger when you hold the axis lock open
good video, and quick question, about how long does it take you o sharpen an average knife on the edge pro (stropping, etc. included)
If I don't have to do a major reprofile with hard steel, usually an hour to an hour and a half. Some knives have kept me at it for up to 3 hours.
TheApostleP alright, thanks. think i may go for a more simple sharpner. Time is strained nowadays :\
I could just make a blade crudely sharp in 5-10 minutes with it, but that's not what I do.
And also is it thick enough to sharpen this at 21 degrees?
I do have both the para 2 and the 940-1. I can't decide which I love best, so I flirt with both daily.
Hey ApostleP, can i use gun oil to lubricate a knife?
+Steve Brule Absolutely.
I just bought some FrogLube from the gun store today, which is great because it's food-safe for use on my knife. Ya dingus.
Thanks hunk, but i chose to use mineral oil since i already had some, live frugally ya turkey.
How come sometimes when I sharpen a knife with the edge pro apex I get one side that has a thicker relive edge than the other side?
It could be a combination of things -- the original blade and/or edge grind, and your technique. Not uncommon -- you just have to get to know your own hands.
Nice knife have to get one
Is it still good to buy in 2024?
Best ever.
So in 2018 the patent is done ?
True words of a knife lover " Near and dear to my heart " Cool vid.
miketheknife2 Thanks, my friend!
If you carry “ other equipment “ , the BM940 is an excellent option .
loser.
I have up and down play in my benchmade barrage
I have one on the way😊
It literally disappears in your pocket? Well that's not good....haha

I just preordered mine...940...in carbon fiber..cant get any better than that! it also has cpm-s90v and blue anodized spacers. didnt want to heat the credit card up too much but i think its going to be an amazing knife and who knows might be tough to get ahold of in the beginning, i just love cf!

Ya, i have never owned a 940 only held them, just dont like green, or aluminum in a knife really unless its grey or black, and i never had a knife in s90v. I know it's one of your favorites so i will definitely send it to you after i get it for a review, unless you end up buying one. =)

that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
