8:10 Benchmade tested the strength of the lock on the 940 and it took 700 lbs of force for the knife to break. The axis lock didn't fail. The pivot screw broke at 700 lbs. I think it's safe to say that the axis lock won't fail on you.
I just received my Benchmade 943. What a sweet little blade. A week ago I had no intention of buying a knife. I found your channel looking for Leatherman TTi reviews and bought one. I got hooked on your vids and after watching this one I just had to have a 94x series blade. So you sold a knife for Benchmade, no doubt about it. Keep the videos coming.
i just bought a used 940 online with a complete shot blade. sent it into benchmade for a new blade (30$) and wow! they replaced everything and i mean everything in the knife except the handle scales... springs washers and clip. its basically a new knife. thats why i love benchmade
I've just bought my green-handled Benchmade 940 with a reverse tanto blade and I'm a fan for life. Opening is super smooth, lockup is solid and the blade (S30V steel) comes razor sharp. It's so nice that I can't bear to use it for EDC/tactical...maybe I need save up again and buy another Benchmade 940. Great review!
Just bought my wife one as and added suprise wedding present and she loves it. I caught her fondling it as you say. Shes hooked on TNP as well, we're going to have to plan our purchases together or we will break the bank! Thank Nutn!
I own 2 of the 940 serrated (950s) knives. I have done things to this knife that should require me to hand in my license to own and use higher end knives; I've pried metal with these, cut and sawed metal wire, bailing wire, punched through thin steel (testing), used one as a hammer, thrown them at all varieties of surfaces and dropped them both, tip down onto concrete and asphalt. The older of the 2 lost her tip. Filed her down and created a new point then sharpened her up good as new. A+ EDC.
Nut'n you are correct. Once you buy a Benchmade you are hooked. My first B/M was the Griptilian 551. The Lo & behold!!! I got the B/M 2550 Mini-Reflex Auto Black Satin. I now EDC both daily on top of all my duty gear, Sig P229,Asp, Pepper Spray, S&W cuffs, Motorola etc. I own a TON of knives, Sog,Kershaw,Boker, Meyerco,ColdSteel,S&W,Gerber. BUT B/M is tops. LOVE my B/M 2550 Mini-Reflex. BTW I got that one from one of your reviews. Thanks Dude
I gotta agree with the comment about buying your first benchmade and then getting hooked and buying more... About a week ago I bought a used BM Adamas with D2 and was really impressed. Within 7 days later I bought two more BMs, the osbourne in s30v with green handle and the Bushcrafter also with s30v, both incredible knives as well.
I've carried many cheaper Kershaw knifes in the past, but I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the 940 and never looking back. Thank you so much for the review, love all your firearms videos.
Just ordered the last $118 one they had on Amazon. The other ones on there are selling for $170 and up. Looking forward to its arrival. I know i wont be disappointed. Dont buy the first one you find, most sites tried to rip u off. But ive waited a little while and have found a great deal.
I do have some serrated knives but am partial to plain edge. They are easier to sharpen and a PE, when sharp, has proven to be a fast cutter for me in all situations (even heavy rope and fabric). Heck, unless you hone it, a re-sharpened PE blade is just a series of micro-serrations anyhow and will function similarly. Finally I like the look of these BMs in PE a little more. Thanks.
just got one, i had an auto rift and for what ever reason after very minimal use the kife failed to deploy, knife was so new it still had the factory edge. the axis trigger or whatever you want to call it, failed to deploy the blade, every now and then it would half deploy. took it to the shop and turned it in for one of these 940's and damn its a nice knife. very slick
Great review! I just bought the 940 and it is by far the best knife I have ever owned. I have a few other benchmades including some autos but like this one much better.
G'day from Downunder, Been a subscriber for a while now and love your videos. Just received from New Graham this knife in Green with the S30V blade and a 710D2. Can't wipe the smile off my face... This is a beautiful knife. Thanks again.
I bought the 940 axis 2 months ago and have had time to really give it some hard use. I can honestly say that this folding knife is the best i have ever owned. the grip isn't great for stabbing true BUT i don't but knifes with the intention to cut someone up. anyways great knife highly recommended to anyone.
Reshoot this video in glorious HD! Been looking around for a 940 red and they are hard to come by. Would love to see this treasure in high quality. Maybe revisit this review?
Hey nutnfancy, finally took the dive into buying my first edc knife. I went with the 940 osbourne. I'm super stoked with the knife! Been watching you for awhile, your reviews are spot on. Keep up the good work. P.s. I believe you just made another knife fanatic!
Got myself a 940 today. It must be an older model `cos the blade is a 154CM not S30V as the new ones. I like it verry much. Maybe more than my Spyderco Calypso 3 with carbon handle and ZDR189/420J2 blade, a fantastic nice knife. Tnx for your great reviews.
Yeah I'm kinda strapped for cash too, I just wanted to give everyone the heads up. Those knives are fucking amazing totally worth it if you've got the cash.
The pivot screw on the 940 has a tendency to back out on occasion. The best fix to this problem is to get some blue or red (I prefer red) locktite and coat the threads on the pivot screw. Just tighten the pivot how you like it and let it dry for about 24 hours. You should not have any more problems after that. Good luck with your problem. The 940 is one of the best blades ever made IMO.
i bought this same knife in green today August 31 and they changes the metal to S30V. Great knife feels good but im going to get the griptillian for heavier jobs....great EDC though. Thanks Nutnfancy!
Current 154cm knife steel is definitely higher grade than aus8. But the "grade" of steel refers to its potential. As you mentioned, it's proper heat-treating that brings out the quality. "Super-steels" like S30V can outperform 154cm at rc 61-62. But any harder, the blade becomes brittle and will chip. S60V on the other hand is left softer (rc 56-57) for toughness, but will still take a fine edge.
i love benchmade knives, i own 3 so far, and i love them, i started out because i was into balisongs, i have the brother to this knife, the osborne design 930 Kulgera, that knife is amazing, i EDC it
I bought the Benchmade Osborne in Silver based entirely on this review. I did like the red, but as an EDC blade, the red color screams look at me, and with the silver, it's difficult to tell that the clip on my pocket is actually a blade. Great knife!
Thanks, im actually going to hold off till the kershaw cryo 2 comes out, its affordable and i have quite a few kershaws in my collection, its a highly anticipated blade!
@DaBossk Great! good to hear! such a great knife. anyway they dont have traditional detents such as ball detent, instead to hold the blade in the have kind of a slope towards the choil of the blade that the axis lock just kind of slides into and in essence, just sucks the blade back into the handle.
@nutnfancy Just got one of these for my birthday thanks to this review. One thing though, the one I got for my birthday was only sharpened on one side. There was no grounding to a blade on one side of the blade. Not a good start for quality control. Already got my second one though and happy with that.
its a double action thats why it comes out so fast and thats due to the AXIS system i love their AXIS lock i have an HK folder i love it, its my favorite and i only wish i could get my hands on an osbourne but the price is crazy. but ya love this knife lol
nice video man think I'm going to buy this knife some time this week used it at my local store (195$) there so going to get online looked and felt nice!
The problem with the price is that the newer models are using S30V steel exclusively, which we all know costs a ton. I'd love to see them bring back the 154CM, but in the meantime we may have to settle for the 950 Rift.
I have only just recently subscribed and started watching your knife reviews. I was wondering if you will ever start doing butterfly knife reviews along with all many other kinds of blades you review. Otherwise I have nothing at all to complain about, your reviews are very comprehensive and informative. Thank you very much.
I agree with what you are saying, but I think you are looking at this knife from a purely knife fighting standpoint. A lot of nutn's EDC/tactical blades are self described emergency tactical use. A better fighter would need way better handle/grip, a more dagger style blade, and longer reach. With that though comes more weight and bulk which alternatively makes it a less practical EDC blade. In the end its an amazing EDC blade that could be used effectively for self defense
Nutnfancy, Critique. I have seen many of your knife reviews, although very informative, some viewers may find the 10+ minute reviews a bit long, however that being said, you do provide a good product review. Suggestion. Would like to see some reviews on EDC knives that are a bit more worldwide friendly i.e. non-locking, sub-three inch blades, like Spydercos UKPK or Terzuloa. Thanks for the reviews, very informative. :)
I have two in green with this blade and the bowie(?). These are so smooth, light, and forgettable in the pocket. Older one has 154cm, and newer has s30v. I like the 154 cause so easy to sharpen.I WISH THEY WOULD NOT PAINT THE CLIP...
It's all on personal preference really. But when you account for energy loss purely on carrying a lot of stuff. It will tire you out faster. Something to keep in mind. And really it depends on what you do on a regular basis.
You have over $700 spent in just one model group. Wow I gotta join the military if they are paying that kinda coin. Excellent review though. I bought my 943 because of this review and my 940 just arrived today. So Benchmade has you to thank for another $300 in sales. I only came to your page looking for a review of the Leatherman Charge TI so it's not like you could say I would have bought a Benchmade knife whether I'd seen your review or not because I wouldn't have.
Great Video! yo got right on every point! i love my 940TI (le 390/500). i got a lot of more expensice knives, but the knife i use the most is the 940,im waiting for a sebenza so it might get some competition.
yes, youre right too. A fighter knife is more focused so little less EDC. Its heavier, loger, fixed, etc. But i think that Horseman is more balanced between an EDC utility and a fighter. Probably 940 is better as utility cause its lighter/more durable steel,an "could be" used for defense, but for me, a good tactical folder must have more fightability. Not necesarily double edged but good pommel for punyo aplications, diferent styles of fast deployment, little more guard for secure stabing, etc.
VG-10 can be put in the same category as 154CM steel so it's also very good. But S30V steel is really THE steel these days. And actually, the 940 Osborne was made out of 154CM steel until 2006 where, as we know, they switched to the S30V. S30V is more durable and I use this knife more than any other with projects and such because it is so tough. It holds an edge better than the 154CM but, 154CM/VG-10 does sharpen better, simply because it's not as tough. IMO, S30V is worth the extra $ fo sho.
Hey nutn could you do a review on the BM940-1? I have the regular BM940 with the anodized aluminum handles, I loved it so much I bought the BM940-1 for ($249) on Blade HQ. Point being I love the 940 series and the 940-1 needs that nutnfancy publicity :P
My knife finally arrived! S30V steel green handle It's better than I thought it would be!!!!!! So fast to open and close The only thing I didnt like was: it didnt come near as sharp as the pink mini grip I just bought for my wife!
Oil is a good answer for prevention, but I found a solution for the light spotting that I already had: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser pads. Strange, but effective.
agreed about jumping on knives you like. year or two ago i was a big fan of the leek (kershaw) -- damascus leeks were plentiful for about 80-90 bucks -- now if i want one i gotta pay 180-200 :(
I really want one of these. I'm torn between the Sebenza and this. I could buy 2 of these and have change leftover for what a Sebenza would cost. I wish there was a video comparing the 2.
@TheTobyKing I used it on a camping trip last week and it did amazing on wood. Just carving spears and what not. I can imagine that it would work great at whittling as well. I used the S30V steel and it still has a shaving sharp edge on it after my trip.
thanks for the response Dojiijii. I guess i haven't heard about the 580 Barrage having continual problems with the axis lock, i'll have to do some more investigating! Has anyone else handled both of these knives? i know the barrage is assisted, and the 940 is manual, but which one takes more effort to open?
I enjoy your reviews. I notice you're not a big fan of tanto or serrated blades. I prefer these styles for my softer steels like 8a, 8cr13mov, etc. The tanto design makes for a stronger blade, and the serrations hold an edge longer than a straight blade. And since the steel is softer, they're still easy to sharpen.
Wow, $125 back in 2008. Now BM is enforcing MAP pricing and they're up over 180$ in most places. I finally found one with a discount for around 162$ and thought that was a good deal.
Trekked1 I did some research and it looks like the 940 is only offered in S30V now. That plus inflation accounts for a good chunk of the price increase, but they were able to be had for under 140$ back in 2012 through maybe 2013. That's a ~40$ increase, depending on the store, in less than a year or so. Lesson learned: if you find a knife you like, don't wait to buy it.
loved this review... i looked on benchmades website...only saw the 950 model and was wondering if this has been discontinued...i am buying it on ebay new either way...also have you looked into any Buck knives? i bought one of there EDC's, the adrenaline and loved it...excluding the clip that got caught on a door and broke off... just hadn't seen any bucks and wondered if there was reason behind this
i love these knives i have three of them the 940,930, and the 943 all plain and uncoated. i was almost sad when u said that the red was limited. great vids and what are fosfer bushings?
my whole collection consists of kershaws and a few bokers, im really consitering buying one of thease, i found one for 150ish but i can bairly afford it, i hope i can get ahold of one of thease some day
NF, how is the tip on your 943? Mine is very sharp all the way to the end, but it doesn't have a very fine needle-point tip, like on a Military for example. Brand new, not used yet. I'm wondering whether I should send it to Benchmade.
Many moons ago I thought I would never buy a benchmade bcause they were expensive and I didn't like their designs at that time, too much. Today my benchmades are my top fav folders. Who would've thought?
Time to update this video to include the S90V, carbon fiber 2.37 oz 940-1.
agreed! 👍👍👍
I saw this knife today in the local gun store and bought it on a whim. It's now one of my top favorites.
This is the first folding knife I have ever purchased. Great knife. Picked it based on your youtube videos. Thanks!
I love how at the end nutn pulls out like five knives and just says, "I know I'm sick." Awesome lol! Keep those vids comin.
you are directly responsible for me buying this knife. damn you fancy....and this is an old video at that....
8:10 Benchmade tested the strength of the lock on the 940 and it took 700 lbs of force for the knife to break. The axis lock didn't fail. The pivot screw broke at 700 lbs. I think it's safe to say that the axis lock won't fail on you.
+Rhino Airsoft that's not 700 lbs. it's the torque, if you convert that number to free hanging weight it's about 354 lbs at 2 inches away from pivot
Hey nutnfancy - Just wanted to say that I picked one of these up on the strength of your recommendation. Thanks for all the great reviews!
Another review that made me jump online and snatch up a knife. And I'm glad I did. Has not left my pocket since.
Just got my 940 today. An incredible knife. I absolutely love the feel of the handle. And I got it because of this review. Thanks Nutn!
One of the best folders ever conceived.
i just bought a used 940 online with a complete shot blade. sent it into benchmade for a new blade (30$) and wow! they replaced everything and i mean everything in the knife except the handle scales... springs washers and clip. its basically a new knife. thats why i love benchmade
I love my 940. I had it for years and it keeps going. It is the limited edition with the black blade and the red and black handle. Just love it.
Copped the Osborne 940-1 in s90v last month and I'm loving it!
Thank Nutn!
I do love the Osborne knifes. The Axes, and related locks, always make me happy. Great frictionless, one handed open and closures
Within 7 days later I bought two more BMs, the osbourne in s30v with green handle and the Bushcrafter also with s30v, both incredible knives as well.
WHO DARES TO DISLIKE THIS KNIFE!!!!
I know 13 people who dicked around with this knife and cut themselves.
got one used at a pawn shop 8 years ago carry it every day love it getting one for my son when he is older.
Thanks.
just got one, i had an auto rift and for what ever reason after very minimal use the kife failed to deploy, knife was so new it still had the factory edge. the axis trigger or whatever you want to call it, failed to deploy the blade, every now and then it would half deploy.
took it to the shop and turned it in for one of these 940's and damn its a nice knife. very slick
Finally got this knife!... Except in green and S30V steel... I haven't stopped playing with it for like 3 days and I love it!
This is the most viewed benchmade video on YT! Nutn, pleas do a hall of fame for this series??
Great review! I just bought the 940 and it is by far the best knife I have ever owned. I have a few other benchmades including some autos but like this one much better.
ARC locks are the same principle and pretty much identical in function I think. Thanks for the comment.
G'day from Downunder,
Been a subscriber for a while now and love your videos.
Just received from New Graham this knife in Green with the S30V blade and a 710D2. Can't wipe the smile off my face...
This is a beautiful knife.
Thanks again.

I can honestly say that this folding knife is the best i have ever owned. the grip isn't great for stabbing true BUT i don't but knifes with the intention to cut someone up. anyways great knife highly recommended to anyone.
Six years now, any update?
i have this knife and i love it. edc for over a year now and its still great
Reshoot this video in glorious HD!

Thanks Nutnfancy!
Well, the number of Benchmade knives that he owns really speaks to their quality, since each one is a pretty big investment.
Current 154cm knife steel is definitely higher grade than aus8. But the "grade" of steel refers to its potential. As you mentioned, it's proper heat-treating that brings out the quality. Found one for 157$ but 125 is unheard of for this knife.
i love benchmade knives, i own 3 so far, and i love them, i started out because i was into balisongs, i have the brother to this knife, the osborne design 930 Kulgera, that knife is amazing, i EDC it
I bought the Benchmade Osborne in Silver based entirely on this review. I did like the red, but as an EDC blade, the red color screams look at me, and with the silver, it's difficult to tell that the clip on my pocket is actually a blade. Great knife!
i have the one with the green handle and combo blade. had for years and love it love it love it
just ordered mine, should be here tomorrow so excited
Dude nutn you need to do another fallow up review on this thing it is my all time favorite knife at 2oz they need to make more knives like this.
That red looks great! I think they had a blue one at one point in time too.
this will totally be my next knife buy!

The red model is sexy. I thank my friend for showing me his or else I probably would be missing out on this particular knife.
Great knife choices time.
nice video man think I'm going to buy this knife some time this week used it at my local store (195$) there so going to get online looked and felt nice!
I just got mine today, based on this video. Awesome blade, dude. Thanks.
The problem with the price is that the newer models are using S30V steel exclusively, which we all know costs a ton. I'd love to see them bring back the 154CM, but in the meantime we may have to settle for the 950 Rift.
i like lock backs for certian knives, spyderco can close somewhat fast, i like lock-backs mostly for older knives, like the brass pin knives.
I have only just recently subscribed and started watching your knife reviews. I was wondering if you will ever start doing butterfly knife reviews along with all many other kinds of blades you review. Otherwise I have nothing at all to complain about, your reviews are very comprehensive and informative. Thank you very much.
I just got mines today. I was trying to open it like you did and I cut myself. Bleeding for 12 minutes. Im surprised about how sharp it is. Thanks.
I agree with what you are saying, but I think you are looking at this knife from a purely knife fighting standpoint. A lot of nutn's EDC/tactical blades are self described emergency tactical use. Nutnfancy,

Thanks for the reviews, very informative. :)
IM bidding on one right now!!!!
I hope i win, that is beautiful
I have two in green with this blade and the bowie(?). These are so smooth, light, and forgettable in the pocket. Older one has 154cm, and newer has s30v. I like the 154 cause so easy to sharpen.I WISH THEY WOULD NOT PAINT THE CLIP...
just have it blasted with walnut shells or glass media at your local auto parts store ...
I spent twice as much money for an OTF knife. I should've watched this earlier. Damn. This would have been a great first knife.
i love the green one...but id have to agree, id prob use the red one more often just because it would endure heavy use better
love benchmades also; i carry 710 now, but this 740 seems perfect.
John
It's all on personal preference really. But when you account for energy loss purely on carrying a lot of stuff. It will tire you out faster. Something to keep in mind. And really it depends on what you do on a regular basis.
@Tux3d0 Lots of our guys have just mailed him their blades and he's done great work for them. Call the shop and talk to John. -- Veri
major production runs also have black. There are some other colors on limited runs, including white metal
You have over $700 spent in just one model group. Wow I gotta join the military if they are paying that kinda coin. Excellent review though.
OOOOO the 941 is out now and its clip point. Now I'm having trouble on deciding which to buy.
My knife finally arrived! S30V steel green handle
It's better than I thought it would be!!!!!!
So fast to open and close
The only thing I didnt like was: it didnt come near as sharp as the pink mini grip I just bought for my wife!
Try to find a Benchmade toollkit online. They make them specifically, and obviously, for their knives. You can find them for around $12.
I would buy one but they are around 170+ now.
I Belive the sheepsfoot style is available on the Griptilian 550.This is the reverse tanto!
Because each one costs at least $120 USD.
That's quite a bit for a edc blade.
Well worth it.
loved this review... i looked on benchmades website...only saw the 950 model and was wondering if this has been discontinued...i am buying it on ebay new either way...also have you looked into any Buck knives? i bought one of there EDC's, the adrenaline and loved it...excluding the clip that got caught on a door and broke off... just hadn't seen any bucks and wondered if there was reason behind this
@elnino482 Nutn says its a 10 out of 10. Glad you asked, I'll update the sidebar info. =) -- Veri
i love these knives i have three of them the 940,930, and the 943 all plain and uncoated. i was almost sad when u said that the red was limited. great vids and what are fosfer bushings?
I actually like the reverse tanto better!
A surgeon can use it, it's so sharp.
my whole collection consists of kershaws and a few bokers, im really consitering buying one of thease, i found one for 150ish but i can bairly afford it, i hope i can get ahold of one of thease some day
Hey thanks for sharing the vid. I got one too but green, reverse tanto and serrated blade.
I'm wondering why non of yours are serrated..?
I was checking this knife out on amazon; apparently the blade steel is s30v now!
