The 940 has been my dream knife for quite some time now. I first eyeballed one before my first trip to Iraq and I fell in love with it. Back then they had the black handles (not sure why they dropped that color and went with green). Every time I used it, I loved it even more and was blown away by the Axis lock. It's extremely strong due to design and can be used either handed. After about 6 years of owning it, I decided to pick up another one. I've tried to carry other knives, but I find myself clipping this one back onto my pocket after a short time. Any time someone asks me for a knife recommendation, I immediately suggest the 940. Folks balk at the price, but it's something that will last a lifetime. After seeing your videos on the Apex, I decided to pick one up since my Gatco left a lot to be desired. I also tried another sharpening system and promptly chowdered the blade. Sent it back for a fresh blade. Now, with the Apex, I can see myself in the edge and will cut like no other. And the edge lasts so much longer.
Nice knife. Thanks for the review. I just ordered the green 940 today Nov 13 2024 Just after Veterans day. Being a Veteran Benchmade will give you 15% off. Something Vets should look into. Now the 940 is $240. -Live Free-
I just have to say I bought a 940-2 after handling a 940-1 and 940 at semperfidepot - I liked the G10, mid weight level and S30V steel for its ease of sharpening. Got mine for $130 ($141 after Auntie Sam took her cut out here in CA) and it's just awesome. My beloved sebenza 21 has taken a back seat for the time being because of how nicely shaped this blade is. While my Sebbie is obviously the more brutally durable of the two, this 940-2 is just great for my benign cutting tasks. It eats tape for breakfast and boxes for lunch and dinner!
Good vid. Nice to hear someone talk so lovingly about their blade. I own the 940, and acknowledge it's greatness as a design, but haven't really bonded with it yet due to some blade play. I'm actually scaling back on knife buying a bit. There are so many great knives out there, and you only have so much carry time. Kind of makes me sad to have knives that don't get carried so I've just stopped buying until I find something uber special.
StartUpSurvival I feel the same way and have started giving some away so others can appreciate them and have something to remember me by one day. I like my 940 as well, but have 10+ years on my mini grip in my pocket, so somehow it’s now a little more special
Watched your video over BM940...and got one Even asked the guys at BM to send arrowhead clip. Just want to say thanks for the great info, it really help me make the decision to buy.
Great question, Chris! To put it simply, the Benchmade 940 is the best $150 EDC pocket/utility knife on the market. Fit and finish are superb. The steel is awesome. It's carryability / pocketability are unmatched. The handle ergonomics are perfection. The mechanism is unbelievable. The annodizing on the handle is pretty durable for the type, and gives great traction. In short, if you're going to spend $150 on one high-quality EDC blade, look no further.
TheApostleP I've know the 940 to be excellent at cutting. They're the perfect slicer and literally the perfect knife. Love your videos and appreciate you. Thrown off by the not known to cut comments though.
Hi. I am interested in purchasing this knife but am troubled by your description of it as "a notoriously poor cutter". I'm no expert on blade steels so could you expand on that comment please. Many thanks.
I know you do, my friend! Your "extended use" video of this knife was the one thing that really created my desire for it. Nutn's original review was good, and I know he praised the knife, but to see yours wearing years of hard-use scars and still functioning made the difference for me. I don't think I'm the only one you sold one of these to either... Check out Camp's comments :)
Thanks for asking, my friend. I'm not sure I'd call it a business, per se, but I do sharpen knives for people. I don't have a website other than my YT channel, as I'm really not interested in high volume. What I do is precision, highly finished sharpening for guys who desire it. I also do some minor folding knife "tune-up" work. I don't do this to get rich, but because I enjoy it, and it does help fund some of my hobby pursuits... like more cool blades. PM me if you need something done.
Going back and watching your 940 vids again :) and I gotta agree that clip is mucho bettero! :) Do you think if I called BM that I could just buy one direct from them?
Not only is it fast, biguy... It's just so "automatic." When you pluck it from your pocket, it doesn't seem to matter where your hand is -- your thumb just intuitively finds the thumb stud, and with almost no effort, out it comes! Closing is just about as easy too. You can't go wrong with this one :)
I was hoping you could help me with a decision I'm trying to make. I was close to pulling the trigger on the 530, but then learned of the 940. I've read tons of great reviews about the 940. Even you taught this as being one of the best or the best EDC, but then you go and say that these knives "are not cutters". It seems that yours only became a cutter after all this special work you did on yours. I'm not willing to invest that amount of time to get a $100+ knife to cut properly. I've heard zero cutting issues concerning the 530, so I'm wondering if I should move forward with that (like I was initially going to), instead of the 940. I mostly open packages, cut tape, cut boxes and do food prep. Thoughts?
Great question with great logic behind it, Raymond. Here's the short-long answer... Although pure slicing ability does not come standard with the 940, and isn't it's strong suit, it can still be sharpened in such a way as to make it a more than adequate cutter/slicer. However, there is indeed much that goes into making a great EDC folder other than pure slicing ability, and in every other area, the 940 just flat kills the 530. It has a stronger blade, has a longer blade and cutting edge, has better ergonomics in hand, has slightly better blade steel, has a stronger handle, and opens and closes with greater ease than the 530. The 530 is thinner in pocket, is a marginally better slicer and will penetrate more easily in a thrust attack. But I maintain that the 530 isn't a purpose-built EDC blade, but rather a small backup tactical blade that can flex into an EDC role. The 940 is a world class EDC blade that errs on the side of strength over pure slicing ability. There... Clear as mud? :)
nice knife. i have been thinking of buying me a benchmade knife. i have had leathermans for years and began thinking i would like a dedicated knife.what do you think about the quality and finish of this 940 ?
I live in Garrett IN. The reason I ask is because my wife is a chef and needs very sharp knives and they are expensive knives so I am reluctant to sharpen them myself so I thought I would have a professional do it. I was just wondering how much it would cost to sharpen a chef knife or if you would even do it.
All three of my benchmades all broken springs first three months ! Repaired with Ganzo (G) lock springs ! My 940-1 clone hasn't broken ! Benchmade quality control blows goats I have proof !
I enjoy your videos. I'm curious how you went about sending your blade in to get a new one and getting a new pocket clip. Who did you speak to to get them to pick out your blade? Did you email them or talk to customer service or to someone else?
I liked the 943 much more when I got one in hand than I did in pictures. It's pretty sweet, espcially if you don't like green or don't like the reverse tanto blade of the 940.
I am well pleased with Benchmade's service. I recently had a double Omega spring failure on my ~ 9 month old 940. They repaired it in about a month turnaround free of charge. ruclips.net/video/KHhjeLNQPfY/видео.html
The new ones have such horrible grinds and secondary bevels that they almost have a recurve! Past beyond the point of fixing without removing a ton of material which can often result in compromising the overall aesthetics and integrity of the blade!
I just sharpened an untouched "First Production Run" knife in 154CM with nylatron washers, so it's truly a first run 940. It had recurve in the factory edge. It's not a new problem. If anything, Benchmade's edges are better now than at any time in their history.
+TheApostleP Thank you for your reply! If I find a decent 940 with a bit of recurve and send it to you for sharpening, could you correct the issue without taking too much material? Thank you for the amazing and warm videos!)
Notoriously poor cutter? Wow! Dont sugar coat it, give it to us straight. We're not going to get anywhere if you keep holding back. How do you really feel about it? Good to know on a knife over $150. Sorry Benchmade. Strike that one from the wish list.
I’m in love with this knife. So much I had to get the carbon 940-1 version
The -1 is my favorite!

The best modern interpretation, I agree...
Wranglerstar been wanting one of these for years, I been hunting for one but the price is so expensive
Do you still carry your 940? I'm a east coast guy and I'm not a homeowner either.

They really did pick out the best blade. Looks great
Beautiful job! Really enjoy your vid's.

Nice 940. :) I've had mine 10+years and it just rides deep in my left front pocket, waiting for its degree of sharpness to be needed.

Excellent lemonade indeed, Looks great.
Beautiful knife. Glad it worked out well for you.

Great knife ! Nice vid ! God bless !!!
Picked my up today really nice knife, color is different but I like it.
Enjoyed the review
Al
I can see that I'm going to have to send my 940 to you, Rob...Hopefully, after we get back from TN! I need an edge like that!
I’ve been wanting one of these for a long time. I bought a Spyderco pm2 over this and regret it.
there is an old Scottish saying," guid gear goes into small bulk," says it all about the 940. God bless all.
I can honestly say the 940 has become my favorite pocket knife to carry & use.

Hi Rob, Thank you for the channel and the videos!
I'm thinking about either a 940 or a 940-1. Would you recommend the 940-1 over the regular model?
***** I prefer the original, Andre, especially at significantly less money.
Which one did you end up getting? Big fan of the -1 myself.

What font size did you choose for your personalization "TheApostleP" on the blade?
nice knife. i have been thinking of buying me a benchmade knife. i have had leathermans for years and began thinking i would like a dedicated knife.what do you think about the quality and finish of this 940 ?
Don't tell Camp, but I think mine might be sharper than his...LOL! I'll be happy to tune it up for you :)
Thanks, my friend :)

What a beautiful knife, rock on Benchmade and ApostleP.
Hello, is the bladelock on the Benchmade 940 engaged even when the knife is closed?
Cheers
No. It acts as a cam-type detent.
That sounds like thick dry construction paper LOL!
I approve this video : )
if i buy one will you sharpen it ?
when you replace your blade do they send you the original blade too?
I haven't ever found those to be an attractive knife. That one is though. I am sure you are still happy with it a year later.
I'm still loving it! You'd be surprised how quickly the utility of the 940 starts to make it more attractive to the eye :)
All three of my benchmades all broken springs first three months ! Repaired with Ganzo (G) lock springs ! My 940-1 clone hasn't broken !

What Steel did you opt for?
Anyone else have some blade play in their 940
I know this is an old video, but do you prefer the standard 940 or the 940-2
Kyle Keenliside Instill own just one 940... this one. I don't dislike the other variants. I just like this one the best.
TheApostleP thanks for the reply
i just got my and is shaving sharp
LOL!!!
$25.00 is what the s30v blank ( folding knife size ) costs I looked it up !
Hmmmm hmmmm ghmmmm

I've just noticed that my 940 has it's pivot screw on the opposite side to the one in your video! Should I be worried?
paul greenwood Nope. You can put them in either way. I might have reversed mine.
Phew, that's a relief - thanks Rob...
+paul greenwood lmao apostles is on the wrong side. Your fine bro
Did they pick you such a nicely ground blade because they knew who you are?
I doubt they knew who I was when this video was made. That was about 20K subs ago. I just asked nicely ;)
TheApostleP That's very cool! From both sides :)
You're a funny guy, Vinny :)... Nope, she's a keeper!

So you have a knife sharpening buisnes? Where is your site?
I enjoy your videos. I'm curious how you went about sending your blade in to get a new one and getting a new pocket clip. Who did you speak to to get them to pick out your blade? Did you email them or talk to customer service or to someone else?
Luke Meetze BM's customer service contact will send you whatever clip you want, for free, anytime.
Thanks I'm stuck between this and the 943. Have you handled the 943? If so what's your take?
I liked the 943 much more when I got one in hand than I did in pictures. It's pretty sweet, espcially if you don't like green or don't like the reverse tanto blade of the 940.
TheApostleP Which blade would be your preference? Thanks I value your opinion.
Hard to say... But I own a 940 and not a 943... Yet 😉
How can I get you to sharpen my knife
Send me an email at rob.bixby65@gmail.com with what you need done. I’ll be happy to help!
New subscriber, do you want to sell it?
