Cello Newcomer: I am delighted by your video. I was “gifted” a Cello years ago and I recently decided to attempt to play it. I took it to the Luthier for new strings and minor adjustments. I played violin as a kid (a little Suzuki and jazz violin teacher at school. I did this until the school did not offer orchestra and was pushing band so I started playing clarinet. I purchased Suzuki Cello Method 1 with play along. I taught myself by watching videos and am now on 2d Book. My vibrato and fingerings are on autopilot once I finally learned (3 weeks) to tune the Cello and change strings as I live in a very humid region. I love play along Suzuki cello and I mimic cellists I admire and play along with the videos. I am getting to the point of learning my 2d position and at some point may need a teacher (I work 12 hour shifts but still felt isolated during Covid times and am using Cello for my anxiety as I hate wearing masks and miss hugs) My old Cello has a beautiful tone, it is an older Knilling Cello. I purchased a stand for it and strings on Amazon. I am doing bowing exercises I learned from RUclips. One of my inspirations is CelloBoy. I love to play along with CelloBoy (RUclips) as he plays the Suzuki Method. This is my first Base Clef instrument. I ham it up with the vibrato and vaguely remember vibrato as a kid. You are very talented, dedicated and definitely have a flair for showmanship and commentary. To my shock I am getting compliments (playing cello less than 6 months) on my playing. I am still bonding with my Cello. I love it. Who knew I could play the Cello ?

Thank you for the video. I was able to find a in person teacher once a week. 45 for 30min but it always goes over and he doesnt mind. What i can say that I learned the first lesson, No way u can learn that in a online lesson. My teacher tunes my cello everytime i come and helps me with my bow. Plus printed a Suzuki book for me before i commited to the lessons. I hve had one paid lesson and this week i couldnt practice as much. I sprained my right tumb skateboarding with my dog. But i eat healthy so its almost fully healed. Use to take me 3 weeks.
45 for 30min is expensive even for me. But in person lessons r not easy to find. I hve to drive 20min. I also rent a cello and no time limit on the credit towards buying. Thats my update.

You can do that or you can register at your local community College and take a music class in the instrument you want to learn. That comes out to be extremely cheap. Its perfect for a beginner until you feel that you are advance enough for a more one on one teaching experience.

    Hi Aaron!
I had watched all your Cello videos and I must say how inspiring and motivating you are.
Recently I decided to start learning to play the Cello. I had rented a Cello for my son to give a try but he strongly decided for the Harp.
Actually it was my dream to learn the Harp but I decided to let the harp for Little One and go for the Cello.
As you so well explained, I will be renting a Cello for adults and later I will think about buying one.
You have an amazing journey ahead of you, specially because you are an young adult.
I am 42 and looking forward the musical journey as well.
I even consider setting an RUclips channel to talk about learning an musical instrument as an adult.
It's important to show other grownups that it is never too late for learning an instrument.
Thank you for your videos and keep on doing them!
    Greetings from Germany

Hello, thank you for your video, i wanted to let your viewers know…… that some community colleges have Strings classes in their music department!. I started piano classes last year, my classmates include a 76 year old woman and 80 year old man. 😊 One credit is 46 bucks, so a 3 credit class plus student fees is about $150.00 for 3 hour class, 16 week semester. If you’re not a little kid you probably don’t need a teacher hovering over you. Unfortunately, a cello is more expensive than finding a keyboard on offer up. Anyways, it’s another option for adults. ❤

Please do explore online teaching options that would be awesome! I just rented my first cello last week. I’m turning 28 yo this year and yup. Very similar to you I always loved the beauty and sound of string instruments but we couldn’t afford it and now I can but getting over the thought of, but I’m too old now, was tough. Thank you for your videos super inspiring, I think you’ve found your niche as a beginner cellist 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thank you. I've decided to take lessons and my first lesson is scheduled for next Wednesday. I'm super excited but I also wanted to get to know a few things before my first actual lesson. The information you provide in your video is very helpful. You have one more subscriber. I'll be watching and commenting as I progress. YoYo Ma also had to stay at the bottom. My advantage over him was that he didn't have you when he started out.

Some instrument shops will let you rent to own as well. And if you want to apply the money to a better cello than the one you’re renting (once you’re ready to buy) then they will let you. I’m guessing not all shops will do this but the one in my area does it that way.

Loving your videos! Any chance of a cello update? I started a month ago as well. It's hard with the online lessons since they can't see you well to correct mistakes in positioning, etc.

Can you identify the make of the cello you bought and the one you rented? How did they compare in quality? Very helpful video. An update on your progress would be great.

I’m exploring playing the cello and found a shop that offers cello rentals. They offer 100% of the first years rental towards a purchase and 20% of following years.
The only downside is you are of course limited to the purchase at that shop but they are seem to be one of the larger shops so my guess is finding a cello from them won’t be a problem.

I have spend so much money on various cars till now. Money that has disolved itself into thin air over the years. But my instruments are all still here and make me very happy. I sold my last car and bought myself a Viola instead🥰
No more car worries/expenses and more happiness.

Also: I’m based in Toronto (Canada). I rent my cello and half the rental fee for each month gets applied to my instrument fee/total if I want to buy the cello after a certain amount of time.

I never played one but I could pick one up and play tons of songs on one and sing also. I play guitar, bass, 3string slide cigar box guitar, ukulele with 5ths tuning strings and tenor banjo ect... :-P

Wow! In which country do you live in? In Germany there is something called music-schools. The highest price at my school is 160$ a month for a weekly 60 minute lesson. My teacher plays international since 20 Years.
And the school gives you a really good cello with all equipment for 13$ a month. The insurance is also around 10$.
