      I started 19 January 2021, the day I was given a chanse to hold my first cello! My teacher told me to sit down on a chair and hug my cello and relax , I had to pinched myself not to start crying! It was very emotional moment! I understand how you feel about this relashionship with your cello! One year later I am much more happier, optimistic, relax, see positiv e on the future, despite of this situation in the world! Cello People are very lucky, I am so sad I did not start earlier! God luck on your journey! ❤❤❤

    I began again in 2020. I was handed a school-owned cello when I was 13 and got to play for 2.5 years, and made 2nd in the Advanced Symphony Orchestra in 1973 when I had to stop...no cello! Don't fret over a factory cello...it's better than no cello. I was shocked at how much came flooding back when 48 years later I got one in my hands again. I now play an hour or so every day and will be starting in 2 community orchestras next month.

      Wonderful that you restarted your studies on the cello! Hats off! It’s not for everybody! And what you say is true: better a factory cello than no cello! Have fun with the orchestra’s next month! Will be cheering for you!

    I've decided at 64 years old to learn how to play this beautiful beautiful instrument. I found a luthier near me that has $2500 cello i will rent for $65/mo. Before I make the actual purchase, I want to make sure I can read the music. I live in Bloomington Indiana, a college town, and so I found a studio that teaches cello. Any and all information you can give me as a person that has never played a instrument would be greatly appreciated! Im soooo excited to learn!

    • @IliaLaporevcellist
      @IliaLaporevcellist  Год назад +1

      Wow! How great and such an amazing decision! Great that you decide to choose a cello around that range. Because cheap instruments just sound bad and it is discouraging. Yes, reading music is extremely important. The only thing I can tell you is this: ups and downs will happen, maybe more downs than ups, but keep going, because you will be rewarded! By the way, I am going to make a video about ‘what are the benefits of playing the cello). Also, if you have Facebook, I recommend you to go to join a group called “the mid-life cellist”, and you’ll find thousands of members that are in the same situation as you! Very nice people and people are encouraging others, definitely worth a look! For the rest, fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride 😃

    I bought a 'cello on eBay. It was nearly new and around 70% of the price of a new one. Stentor Conservatoire Cello with Thomastik Dominant Strings. I had a taxi company courier it the 25 miles and it arrived in perfect condition. I'm delighted with my purchase. It will be fine for me for the first year or two I'm sure.

    What I did is to buy a cheap cello for 750 euros and it had a good sound because it was massive wood. But the neck was not real ebony wood. The first year I was just concentrated on the bowings so no need for an expensive instrument. Now I have a better instrument. Not a handmade one, but it is okay for my level of playing.

    I bought an Eastman cello I found on Facebook. It is obviously used but in good condition and I got it for $750, so I could actually afford it. I am happy with it and love playing it.

      I am happy for you! Most of the cellos are already used, and besides, as it was already used, the cello was already opening its sound. When you have a brand new instrument, then it needs more exploration (but maybe that can be fascinating?) Anyway, happy you love it and wish you a great cello journey ahead!

    As for getting a cello as a beginner, I’d strongly recommend hiring them when you start out (if possible). That way the financial commitment isn’t massive in the first instance and also gauge if you/your child want to continue. My first 3 cellos were rented until I properly grew tall enough. Also, you can get really good factory cellos these days (at least in the U.K.), but a bonus if you can afford handmade 😊.

    Rent to buy the cello you are renting would not be a good idea. Many violin shops give you credit from renting towards the purchase of a proper well set up instrument. I regret that I sold my romanian cello back to the shop after I bought my L&C. Oh well I got a good one now. And ITS NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO BUY A CELLO ONLINE!! I couldve had my Luis and Clark shipped to my home but ugh! Dropping over 7K over the internet was just crazy. I went to Boston and the Louie played out for me 6 cellos until i was satisfied with the one i took home. 😊
