A friend of mine a while back put me in charge of selling his Joe collection. It's almost all gone. The Phantom is one of the things but he mentioned he'd like to collect the jets again so I kept it to fully restore anything that needed to be replaced. Those cockpit rails are a huge problem. I was able to fully restore the jet using any original parts that didn't need to be replaced and got the repro stickers to get new stickers and put them in the correct spots ha ha. It looks amazing.

I remember those concept images of the stealth fighters that came out in the late 80s, figured it wouldn't take long for GI Joe to hop on it and come up with something similar.

Man I used to always look at this thing in the pamphlet that the time it came out. I never knew exactly how the pilot sat inside it, but there is SO much wasted space on jets, especially this one. It's still an awesome flying vehicle and that landing gear mechanism is crazy.

I was just going into 8th grade when I bought mine at Hill’s Department Stores. I paid $12 on sale. That was the last GI Joe vehicle I bought. Sadly, I threw away the pristine box when I moved my parents out of their house about six years ago, but the X-19 is in near perfect shape with all the parts!

The Phantom is one of my favorite Joe jets. I initially thought I couldn't get one for Christmas in '88. I'd shown my dad the Joe catalogue and asked if I could have the jet. He said no, it was too big. I was confused and disappointed because my brother had a Conquest and had gotten the Mamba in '87. I had a TTBP. There's no way the X-19 was too big. Turns out, my dad thought I wanted the MCC (which, of course, I did but wasn't about to ask for something that big), but I clarified that I was asking for the stealth. I ended up with getting it as my first Joe jet and my brother got the Skystorm. A few years later, a family friend gave us a Christmas present to share, which turned out the be a 2nd X-19. Since I still had mine (w/ the original pull back landing gear mechanism) the 2nd one (w/ the updated pull down gear switch) went to my brother. Good times.

Great reviews! A small suggestion: it would be very interesting to know/remember what these figures, vehicles, playsets, etc. cost at the time of their release. It would give your content even more context.

I agree. I remember what lots of things cost back inearly 90s near the end of line.

i got this for christmas in, i think 88, and it seemed very extravagant, and was fun to play with... for a little while. my other flying gi joe vehicles were the skyhawk, the fang, the trouble bubble, the claw, amd a couple of other 3 3/4 jets, like captain power. all of those could be flown around mostly one-handed. i had many skyhawk/fang battles by myself. but the phantom was so big, and felt so delicate, that it took two hands to really handle it. to me, that limited its play value, and it didn't take long before it mostly became a grounded mission objective, while later additions to my hodge-podge air force like the toger rat, mudfighter and batwing were much favored...

I had this toy, during all the stealth plane hype! It did have easy to detach parts, but wasn't too heavy. Mine had the backwards sliding retractable lever for the glanding gear. The red scarf was a nice feature for the pilot as well : )

Great review of a plane I have long dreamed of and hope to find one day. I am guessing the Ghostrider name may have also been borrowed from Top Gun which was still very popular at the time this came out.

    • @richardgreenleaf3259
      @richardgreenleaf3259 3 года назад

My thoughts exactly. Both Maverick and Cougar used Ghost Rider as designation for their aircraft (Cougar specified he was Ghost Rider 117) suggesting they should have been members of VF-142 Ghost Riders. 1988 was just two years after the movie, and F-14 models based on the movie were still hot commodities then.

I still have *most* of mine from when I was a kid. Three guesses as to which parts are missing.
As for Ghostrider *wanting* to not be noticed... well, I can relate. It’s continued to this day, unintentionally. I’m 6’5”, 250lbs, and I somehow can sneak up on people, even in full view of them.

I always liked this jet. Underrated toy. Still has the retractable landing gear system, the rubber tires, the dual seat cockpit, and the huge scale and presence. Great piece. The next jet that was released in the GI Joe line was the Cobra Hurricane, and it is a massive, massive step backwards from this, the last great jet in the line. I'd go so far as to say the only better jets in the line were the Skystriker and the Night Raven. I love the Rattler dearly but it's not got the sheer size and wow factor of the 'big 3.'

I will be honest, I've never had an issue with the canopy falling off my X-19. I took the seatbelts out of mine and managed to fit the modern Ace figure that came with the 30th Anniversary Sky striker in the back seat. Mine is pretty durable, which is mildly surprising considering how dirty it was when I got it. Your example might have been stored improperly before you got it.

Sometimes you guys, you and your buddy Formbx257 are too harsh of a reviewers. This is an excellent looking toy. Sure, the hidden machine gun wing thing fals off, if you pull it too much, but it's not like we're playing with it at our age. I've personally never had any problems with opening and closing the canopy. The pull mechanism for the landing gear is awesome. You're right. Ghostrider himself is a great looking figure. The Phantom logo is awesome like you said. The one problem I have with this vehicle that you declined to mention was the winged missiles slide off easily. But, it's totally worth having in your collection. The colors are cool. It's a beautiful toy.

I remember the US DoD saying that the supposed F-19 wouldn't be able to fly, most likely because of its lack of wings. Regarding the toy, if it were real it too wouldn't be able to fly. Nor would it be any good as a stealth plane due to all of the angles and outboard weapons. Even planes like the F-22 and F-35 carry their missiles in weapons bays in order to avoid detection by radar.
I don't think the name "Ghostrider" (singular word) is able to be copyrighted due to a USN squadron existing at the time with the name.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-142
Tom Cruise's character in the movie Top Gun also used the callsign "Ghostrider".

It is probably most based on the Northrop Stealth Fighter proposal, which is known to have been nicknamed the Phantom. Preliminary designs for that are where most of the speculative stuff comes from. That was the one with the smooth curves. You can see some of its design lineage in the YF-23. I don’t think it ever made it as far as actual prototype, but some various mock ups were made. The noteworthy elements of the Northrop proposal/bid, that seem consistent with most of the various “F-19” speculation is the inward tilted twin tails, the top mounted engine intakes and the smooth curved fuselage with small topside canards.

The F-19 design still gets used a lot by people who want to argue that the "Aurora" super secret SCRAM Jet exists and it was just a psyop to keep it secret. It is the reason that the word "Aurora" and phrase "Model Kit 19" were outright banned discussion topics on a lot of early aviation forums

I'm curious if the design team of this GI Joe craft were inspired by the fictional X-19 Ghost Rider stealth planes mentioned in Tom Clancy's 1986 war novel, "Red Storm Rising" which both seem to be similar in description but different name (except having the same military designation of X-19). I listened to the audio book version of that novel and almost forgot about the similarities between this 1988 vehicle and the 1986 novel.

I had the other variant of the X 19 with the pull back lever to activate the landing gear. My only real issue was I could never get the lazers to stand up when deployed. I as a kid was a Gi Joe Dr. Frankenstein I mixed and matched parts of "lackluster figures or found better combinations , in this case I found Ghost Rider's head to be a better match to Air Patrol Commander Skydive's body and vice versa. Sadly my X 19 was lost in a storage unit debacle, but I still have Ghost rider/Skydive and Skydive/Ghost Rider in my figure collection

I didn't hit target marketing age for GI Joe until about 1986 - mixed in with everything else awesome from 1986.
I had this toy - but, it just doesn't hit my nostalgia vibes for some reason. I guess I was into the Shark Tank thing (there's some generational marketing weird for everybody) - and I really wasn't into vehicles. It was the characters driving my imagination... Snake and Storm, and here we are today, I guess... We created this.
