    Dogfight and the mud fighter were the equivalent of Thrasher and the thunder machine---some dude that brought along his home made fighting machine and was accepted into the ranks.

    • @russellharrell2747
      @russellharrell2747 2 года назад +4

      I almost expected Dogfight to have been a barnstormer stunt flyer instead of a carnival game hustler. It’s not like GI Joe didn’t recruit random shirtless martial artists or let wild animals like wolves and eagles have the run of their headquarters.

    • @DareDevilDave75

      @@DareDevilDave75 the thunder machine is a thing of beauty and easily a top five vehicle in the vintage line. Even the smallest detail, such as the tall antenna or steering wheel beat anything on the mudpuppy, er, fighter. Also the thunder machine has the best example of a rotating Gatling gun in the line, having dual barrels and an ammo feeding belt. The poor mud bomber barely has guns at all compared to that.

    The Mudfighter seems a good rival for the Hiss 2 AND Fang 2 as it's a carpet bomber and the twin gatlings measure up well against the second Fang. The next Cobra jet would be the Condor, and this little plane would get chewed up by that beast.

  • @earhornjones
    @earhornjones 2 года назад +4

    Thanks for the review! I've been waiting years for this one!
    The Mudfighter was one of my last, and most beloved G.I. Joe toys. By the time it came out, I had mostly grown out of G.I. Joe, but when my father returned from a business trip bearing the gift of a Mudfighter, it triggered something of a resurgence in my love of the series.
    I loved the weird, rough looks of the plane, and the fact that it carried an absolute assload of bombs made it a virtual doomsday weapon on my play battlefields. I'd owned a Rattler (and a Tiger Rat) and really loved those, but they always felt quite delicate, and my beloved Night Raven was almost too large to lift, so none of those planes really got in and scrapped with the troops on the ground. The Mudfighter felt like one of those plastic, generic drugstore jets that you'd find near the foolr at Walgreens, and as such, I had no qualms about flying it around in the most haphazard, daredevil manner.
    Dogfight's simple throwback looks also enamored me. In a time when our Joes were covered head-to-toe in strange technical details and crazy colors, Dogfight stood out as somebody wearing a uniform that actually looked like it could exist. I promptly promoted him to General, above the boring Hawk, and let him lead the good guys to victory.
    Thanks again for the review of this oft overlooked piece of history.

    • @brainlock72
      @brainlock72 2 года назад

      I’ve seen some of those “retro” cheap generic vehicles at Walmart, recently. You’d have to cut out leg space for classic Joes, but it would be a tight fit, anyway. Not sure if those new 3” FortNite figures would work with them?

    The odd mention of Alabama on the file card might be referring to Fort Rucker in Alabama. Fort Rucker is the training fort for Army Aviation and it makes sense for a military pilot who flies Close Air Support (CAS) to go there and train.
    I'd also add the Mudfighter is probably where the "speculative military sci-fi" nature of GI Joe got a little ahead of itself. A turbo-prop in a jet world seems like a bad choice, but a C-130 and all it's variants (which include 2 types of gunships) are props. Props are easier to maintain, require less runway and are generally more rugged, and can fly slower (easier to aim, and see whats going on). If you have air superiority they have a lot of advantages for CAS. The military viability is enough for Ember to make EMB 314/A-29 Super Tacano. Also the Mudfighter's prop looks a little weird, but the current prop on the C-130J has a similar look. Occasionally the designers for GI Joe seemed to have "guessed" pretty smartly about the future of military tech.

    The gun looks like a long-barreled magnum 1911 with a scope...for some reason mounted on the slide...? As for the Mudfighter, yeah, it feels cheap. A protective cowling for the propeller and a thumb roller to move it, and separate the gatling guns and move them backwards on the fuselage, give them thumb rollers as well, give it a clear plastic canopy...any of these would make the Mudfighter feel less cheap. I am inclined to like it, since it is meant to support the grunts on the ground...

    I.don't know if anyone has said, but "mudfighter" is a traditional name for aircraft with a primary Combat Air Support. I don't know when the term originated. I want to say in WWII when the P-47 was adapted for a ground support and tank killer role. I know the A-1 Skyraider was colloquially called a "mud fighter" and so was the A-10 to a lesser extent.

    Roger was playing “Leo Walsh”, where do you get Mudd from? 😱😉😂🖖
    (Ps: he would also like a copy of your first draft script. 😂)
    I had this, but at the time, it was more buying out of habit than anything else. I remember being disappointed the ship was molded in the basic colors, no paint apps. Dogfight (who shares a first name with Hyneman!) just became a basic troop for me, as I really had no time for play between finishing school, work, and parents’ impending split. If anything, I think I imagined the bombs as booster jets or something? The propeller didn’t stay on too long.
    As for being born in one city and growing up in a different area, it happens all the time. Hell, Duke was a personal favorite for being born here in StL, yet cartoon (and comic?) mentions him growing up elsewhere. One school friend was born across River in Illinoiz, we grew up an hour out of StL. My later comic dealer was born in Queens, moved to StL area when he was eight, stayed here most of the rest of his remaining 34 years. Another acquaintance seems to have “LA” as his residences, born in Lower Affton (StL), main res in Louisiana, while his main jobs in Los Angeles. Keeps residences in each area, plus NYC.

    I can see this making the lives of a platoon of Cobra vipers or HISS tanks absolutely miserable
    If I had one of these I'd like to think I would display it with some missiles from another aircraft it's just a break up the monotony of the bombs
    I still think the US military could benefit from a turboprop powered Cass aircraft something cheaper than an a-10 packing and m61 gun with about a 1000 rounds of 20mm shells and an 8000 lb bomb load

    I checked 3DJOES and turns out Dog fight is on the Mudfighter box art, it's just you can't see his head, so he's on the box art but it's a horrible photo.

    I don't like this figure. His torso has weird proportions. I always call him Launchpad McQuack.
