I get excited trying out new sunscreen. Bur because I use it every single day I am put off by anything above $30. I think sunscreen should be affordable too for more people to put it in their routine because it is suuuuper important. Love your content Dr.Sam👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
As an African American, I didn’t believe I needed SPF until about 2 years ago (I’m 29). Needless to say, my skin has never looked better and less breakout prone since high school. I attribute much of this to regular SPF use. I always reach for SPF 50 now for the reasons you mentioned and also to mitigate against any chances that the SPF rating is actually lower.
I always used an SPF 15 every day for about two decades, since it was incorporated in my daily moisturizer. Not a great number, I know, but I like to think it helped keep my skin in good condition. I've been diligently using factor 50 every single day for the last three years, and I adore LRP Hydrating Cream from their Anthelios line.
Great info! But please, as a someone that wears makeup, please help us in how to reapply OVER makeup without ruining it. Most people I follow that keep saying this don’t wear makeup.
I'm British and live in Essex . I've always stayed out of the sun as I hate sunbathing etcetera . Since I've been on my skin care journey and use Lactic / Glycolic Acids and a Retinol so I have used sunscreen but it doubles up as my AM moisturiser . It's spf50+ with a wide range of organic filters including Tinorsb filters . I'm lucky I'm a man whom doesn't wear make up so reapplying is easy for me . I'm Normal skin type and don't get irritated by chemical .
I know that sunscreens aren’t additive in efficacy. I just want to make sure that’s understood before I tell what I do. I have yet to find an SPF 50 that my skin can accept daily. But I found an SPF 30 that it will. When I apply 1/4 tsp of the 30 and let it set, then apply the same amount of an SPF 50 on top, my skin handles that well. For both products, I have to avoid salicylates completely, and they are in most formulas, which makes finding a sunscreen tricky.
Dr Sam, not related to the topic but you are beautiful and I love you're hair, it's always fabulous 💖i hope one day you can share some haircare secrets 💖
Can you please make a video for Laser treatment for Rosacea. I am a male dealing with rosacea red spots on my beard and mustache area. I had a biopsy and it came back as Rosacea. But the dermatologist said It would be better not to use laser because I could loose the facial hair. But In other reviews and other web pages It says Vbeam laser does not affect the hair follicle. Could you please make a video explaining how this works. Is it safe to use on face with facial hair???
I use sunscreen even when at home. I'm just so used to it that I feel uncomfortable when i don't have it on. I dont know if it does anything but I really hope so.
Have used your Dr. Sam’s daily sunscreen- and it’s the best I’ve ever used. Sinks right into the skin and is a pleasure to use. I just ordered gossamer tint 1- can’t wait to try it! 💗
I live in Calgary and Edmonton in Canada, with dry prairie climates, especially in winter. Should I use sunscreens or other things with hyaluronic acid ?
I do mix two sunscreens but both are by the same manufacturer and the only difference is one is tinted and the other is not. I mix them to get the right shade for my face.
I do that, as well. I use a quarter teaspoon of my untinted SPF plus a drop or two of the tinted one since it's a much darker color. I mix them thoroughly and then apply to my face.
Cosmetic chemists have said that you shouldn’t mess around with the formulation at all. In testing sunscreens, they say that even small changes can throw off the protection offered.
Chemist Confessions break it down well in their Sunscreen pt.2 episode 25, skip to the Questionable SPF value section. Otherwise Lab Muffin, also a chemist, has a lot of sunscreen information, but I can’t point you to a specific one.
Gawd I've tried/used soooo many different brands of spf from around the world....and have been a diligent (spf 30/50) user for many years....(Haven't tried Dr Sam's tho)......I always seem to come back to La Roche-Posay Anthelios spf50+ invisible fluid....It's the only one I've found that doesn't sting my eyes/make my eyes water.......and it's readily available here in the UK...@ a fairly reasonable price.....:)
Thank you so much for such informative, easy to understand content. You’re the sole reason I have a good skincare routine! Do you have recommendations for a good mineral sunscreen for body?
Can you please recommend a really good SPF for the hands as i have vitiligo and a hand SPF is as much of a necessity to my hands as it is my face and its so hard to get handcreams with a good SPF in them, thankyou !
Dr Bunting, I’ve been using Heliocare factor 50 gel for years, I love the texture, but have been VERY CONCERNED recently that the company has become very vague about the protection of this sunscreen. They told me the advanced range has not been through the same approved testing as their 360 range (which I hate the texture of). This advanced range doesn’t have a UVA seal or PA**** rating and I’m very concerned I’m spending an awful lot on a sunscreen that the company seems to be hiding just how much protection it actually offers. I asked why it hadn’t been through the same testing and they said those tests weren’t about then and it would be too expensive to put the advanced range through those tests now. That did not fill me with confidence. Please give me an honest answer, not a trying to endorse their product answer, how much protection does it REALLY offer and are the ingredients good for preventing ageing and hyperpigmentation? (Please reply)
I hope you will read and answer this. Can I use azelaic acid if I'm also prone to white freckles (maybe versicolour)? I'm worried it would make it worse.
I do all this EXCEPT the frequency of reapplying. That is the toughest for me, not because of will to comply, but because I wear makeup and have not found a good solution. My skin gets dry and mineral powders to top off do not have the desired cosmetic effect. Every spray says not to spray it on the face and pressing a liquid in disrupts my makeup. It is a tough one. I do wear a hat if I am walking outside for any length of time but not inside working near a window.

I've tried endless different sunscreens and I've found that if I apply the correct amount there are very few that don't look greasy and make my foundation look horrible
It is very hard with foundation. I use the Estee Lauder new primer that has an spf of 45 I think under foundation. On days when I don't wear make up at all Dr Sams Gossamer has been great for hours in the garden in full sun. I also like the Australian Gold 50 tinted for no make up make up days.
I know that nano physical sunscreens are more cosmetically elegant than non-nano, but aren’t they bad for the environment? I’ve heard varying opinions on the subject and would appreciate hearing about it from you.
No. If you're staying indoors always, you don't need to reapply. Blue rays emitted from electronic gadgets doesn't effect your skin but it does effect your eyes. But, please apply sunscreen every single day.
Is there any vale to “layering” sunscreen… brands are coming out with serum spf products… would using a routine like… serum spf, then moisturizer with spf , and topped off with a bb/cc cream with spf give enough coverage? Or is only the last step of a “thick” layer of spf going to protect the skin?
I'd be concerned about filters interacting and getting destabilised. Uncoated zinc oxide is usually the biggest culprit for causing problems with other sunscreens (so most sunscreens marked as "natural" probably shouldn't be layered with an organic or hybrid one). Also, "serum" SPFs refers to the *texture* of the SPF and not what stage it should go in. Sunscreen should always be applied last.
You wouldn't believe the mess I recently got myself into due to my never ending search for a decent sunscreen. Been using the LRP Invisible Fluid but it so incredibly shinny 😑

Thank you Dr Sam for another very informative video! I have very sensitive , rosacea prone, fair skin with warm undertones. I only use mineral sunscreens because of my sensitive skin but finding the right tint can be challenging. I don't wear makeup so what I do to get the right tint is apply the darker sunscreen first, let that set and then apply a sunscreen with a lighter tint on top. Am I affecting the efficacy of the sunscreens by doing this?
Hello! I'm 40, and I think the two actives we should use (apart from SPF) are a retinoid and vitamin C. If you can, get a prescription retinoid, but an OTC retinol will work, too 💖
Hi I am 39 and beside sunscreen/hat/sunglasses I would say retinol and niacinamide as my skin can't stand vitC. A weekly glycolic/lactic exfoliant for a boost of brightness and a good moisturiser. Overall a good diet, working out ( no skincare will give you fit arms), avoiding stress as it shows more on the face the older you get and of course sleeping enough and enjoying your life. Anyone look better when they are happy.
Sunscreen is still important even while saying home. There was a photo I saw of a women who sat beside a window for years, one side of her face which the sun hit had very clear skin damage with a lot of fine lines, the other had very little. To be safe, apply it when you are at home about 3 times at least even if you are not near the window, light still creeps in. Make sure your sunscreen has good UVA protection, glass can block UVB, but not UVA, and UVA contributes to skin ageing and skin cancer. If you do decide to sit near the window, make sure your sunscreen was recently reapplied.
Dr Sam as usual great video! I'd like to ask you...Can i apply the sunscreen on wet face? I spray my face with thermal water. Greetings from Athens-Greece!

I do like having several different types to choose from. I’m wondering about expiration dates since there are some I don’t use up as quickly. Is it okay to go by the date on the tube or is it better to go by how long it’s been open?
Dear Sam, is the critical wavelenght (technical term) of your nontinted mineral sunscreen SPF 50 400 nm or 370 nm? Does it leave permenant stains on textile like tinted or chemical sunscreens (yellow stains after washing)? Is it easily spreadable both in winter and in summer? Thanks!
There is this question that I've been asking myself for so long now : the makeup primer should be applied before or after SPF? I decided to apply the primer before the sunscreen, so it would do like a "blocking layer" between my moisturizer and sunscreen. This way, it seems like my sunscreen "stays" on the top of my skin instead of penetrating into my skin like the rest of my skincare products (which would make my sunscreen ineffective quicker). Do I apply my products in the right order ? This is what I do : cleanser - serum - moisturizer - *primer* - sunscreen - foundation - etc. etc. Thank you so much for your help !
@@SusanSlattery Really ? But sunscreen isn't suppose to be the last step of a routine ? I'm afraid to "mess up" the composition of the SPF by spreading a primer on it. If you see what I mean...
@@allergicrhinitis4469 Every You Tuber says put on your serums, moisturizer, then SPF, whether mineral or chemicals. Let the SPF set up and form its "FILM" for 10-15 minutes. Then, go in with primer, foundation and all that. I asked Angie on Hot + Flashy about this as I watched her rubbing things in on top of SPF and she said, "Yeah, maybe I'm disrupting it, but I let it set up, and anyway, at least I put SPF on!"
Also if you worry about it, get a spray SPF to set your makeup. Still, put the SPF on, but then top everything off with a finishing SPF spray. Coola makes one and so does Kate Somerville.
Necessary-I don't know, but it is greatly encouraged-especially if its any kind with waterproof and your skin is sensitive/prone to breakouts. I've seen a huge difference when I double cleanse.
It has been advertised not on ur channel but on another channel that UVA/UVB specially UVA not good not in the exact words I I did comment on their channel that please do tell us which sunscreen should we use….Believe me ive stopped using sunscreen because all sunscreens contain IVA/UVA
@Claire Arbuthnott my Esthetician encourages using Vit. C with SPF-not mixing them though. She says Vit C helps on the absorption and functionality of spf. Morning routine: combo skin with minor hyperpigmentation: 1. Cleanse (with a mild/gentle cleanser) 2. Vit C serum 3. SPF 50
Alcohol in sunscreen is usually used to bind the ingredients together that helps for the product consistency so they're not entirely bad but its up to you if you want to use sunscreens that have alcohol or not. Hope this helps :))
I diligently wear at least SPF 30 (usually 50) on my face, neck and back of hands every day. I cannot however apply it near my eyes (brow bone and upper eye lids). My eyes get so irritated and dry and I've tried so many mineral, hybrid and chemical sunscreens. Anybody tips for protecting the eye area that actually doesn't irritate my eyes?
I love the Avène Intense protect. I apply it on my eyes and zero reaction, and I have supeeeer sensitive eyes. I need to be super careful with mascara, or eye powders, etc.
I use EltaMD UV Elements or MD Solar Sciences Mineral Tinted Cream around my eyes. I'm very sensitive in that area, but these sunscreens work fine all over my eyelids and brow.
No mineral sunscreen should sting around the eyes, however it can be drying, I know. I have extremely sensitive eyes and the only non drying mineral sunscreen I have found to work brilliantly as I also have eczema is Paula’s Choice Calm SPF30 for dry skin, with this one in particular I can slather on my eyes no problems whatsoever ever.
I use Alumier md mineral day and night to protect also against radiation from my phone and tablet. It is sweatproof and protects against tewl, trans epidermal water loss. It is difficult to remove. I take it off with oil based cleanser and hot face cloth.

Hi Dr Sam,tq for all yr informative videos 🥰.
Can u pls tell whether we can use moisturizer containing parabens during pregnancy?
Thank you Dr Sam for another very informative video! I have very sensitive , rosacea prone, fair skin with warm undertones. I only use mineral sunscreens because of my sensitive skin but finding the right tint can be challenging. I don't wear makeup so what I do to get the right tint is apply the darker sunscreen first, let that set and then apply a sunscreen with a lighter tint on top. Am I affecting the efficacy of the sunscreens by doing this?
Hello doctor, is it okay to apply sunscreen directly on bare face without moisturiser underneath?
Yes, it's totally fine. A good habit dermatologists have also mentioned is using your sunscreen as your moisturiser.
Hello Sam, I know that it's not the today's topic, but what women over forty should use for their skin?
After that I did my homework and checked every single creams face washes
How would you recommend to remove sunscreen in the evening? Is a daily face cleanser enough?
Yes cleanser should be enough. You can watch how to use a cleanser for best results here: ruclips.net/video/t4plGpgkM2w/видео.html&feature=emb_logo ❤
how much sunscreen do we need if we basically always stay home? with no direct sunlight hitting the skin often?
Check the lab muffin beauty video about wearing sunscreen indoors.
Dr Sam,a question about Retinol use.If several montgs ago I had Hyaluronic Acid injection on my jaw area do you think Retinol could damage injection effect? I use a ligyt Retinol Neutrigena for eye for all my face but somehow i feel i lost the effect of hyaluronic and my jaw and cheeks are looking like before the injection.Pls help with your opinion.Thank you!!
Gracias por la información Doctora. Saludos desde Venezuela. El uso de bloqueador solar es tan fundamental que puedo ver el cambio en mi piel y en mi vida con solo usarlo 3 veces al dia.
I do like having several different types to choose from. I’m wondering about expiration dates since there are some I don’t use up as quickly. Is it okay to go by the date on the tube or is it better to go by how long it’s been open?
How long it's been open is more critical.
@@SusanSlattery Agreed! I bin a sunscreen within a year that it's opened.
Why is zinc oxide so drying?!?!?
Dear Sam,
is the critical wavelenght (technical term) of your nontinted mineral sunscreen SPF 50 400 nm or 370 nm? Does it leave permenant stains on textile like tinted or chemical sunscreens (yellow stains after washing)? Is it easily spreadable both in winter and in summer? Thanks!
I wish every sunscreen manufacturer answered these questions. I’m from Queensland. I have had a lot of skin cancer. SPF is not optional here.
AFTER
@@SusanSlattery Really ? But sunscreen isn't suppose to be the last step of a routine ? I'm afraid to "mess up" the composition of the SPF by spreading a primer on it. If you see what I mean...
I put primer on (when i do) after my sunscreen. I can’t remember where but it was suggested before to do it this way. Maybe Dr Dray?
Is it neccesary to cleanse spf with double cleansing (especially oil/balm)?
Maybe, if it's waterproof. My sunscreen isn't waterproof and I typically apply it twice per day, and I find a single cleanse is plenty.
Ginger always makes an appearance 🐈.
Hi Dr Sam, low your channel and products. Can I ask, is mixing your sunscreen with a vitamin C serum a no no as well? Thanks
@Claire Arbuthnott my Esthetician encourages using Vit. C with SPF-not mixing them though. She says Vit C helps on the absorption and functionality of spf.
Morning routine: combo skin with minor hyperpigmentation:
1. Cleanse (with a mild/gentle cleanser)
2. Vit C serum
3. SPF 50
Wait, sagging too??
what about alcohol in sunscreen?
Use sunglasses everyday when you're outside!
" Always go high 🚬 "🤣🤣🤣
I love your vídeos 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Just talk to my gf we all cool, dw doc we got you
I use Alumier md mineral day and night to protect also against radiation from my phone and tablet.
It is sweatproof and protects against tewl, trans epidermal water loss. It is difficult to remove. I take it off with oil based cleanser and hot face cloth.
very pale skin you have to be very careful about prolonged exposure to the sun
