Whoopi is one of most talented people of our time. We are not valuing enough her talent.
Too bad she's only doing The View for many years now. And she was the biggest movie star back in the day, after Ghost and Sister Act. I can't think of any other black actress who was more successful. But her movie career went down after that sadly.

One night I couldn't anymore so I texted her and I was like guuurl, did I do something to offend you because there's a strange energy between us I don't understand. Interesting. There are 4 producers of the new Color Purple including Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg but black folk zoom in on Oprah as though she financed the entire movie, negotiated all the contracts and made all the decisions. Then when Taraji posts on her Instagram page that she asked Oprah to intervene and she did which resolved the issue, the assumption is that she was forced to do so. Monique refused to promote her movie without additional pay. Whoopi told her that if she had called her, she could have schooled her.

I'm convinced Oprah has been envious of Whoopi all these years because she thinks she deserves an Oscar over Whoopi and Whoopi was cast to play such an iconic role in TCP. Replay the unenthusiastic way she introduces her when she has to say "Academy Award winner..." Replay that big fake smile when they hug. 0:08 This "air-clearing" was a chore for her, I think she realized she was being immature, that's why she is brought to tears here. Whoopi was decidedly the bigger person that day in Tyler's kitchen. Oprah wants an Oscar bad, then and now. Whoopi's got her number, too, saying she had to "clean up" for Oprah when Oprah mentions she's wearing heels. That was subtle shade at "Queen Oprah". Whoopi likes dressing comfortably but she's worn heels throughout her entire career, including regularly on The View around the time this was taped. The Academy gave O an "honorary" Oscar a few years back, and I'm convinced she campaigned and pushed her weight around (no pun intended, I like O better fat and healthy looking, anyway) for that Oscar hard behind the scenes at the Academy offices. You know Miss O has to be the most accomplished Black woman in any room at any time.
No, that's not pitting Black women against each other, it's just what Oprah gives off. Check the anecdotal evidence from other stars over the years. (See: Mo'nique. Part of what was in the mix during that whole ordeal was Mo'nique's Oscar win and that outstanding, unexpected performance from Mo'nique in Precious. Oprah was not expecting Mo to bring the heat like that, and she definitely wasn't expecting an Oscar nomination, not to mention a win for Mo'nique's first ever dramatic performance on the big screen. She stole the show.) I have a Black woman friend that has also had a terrible experience meeting oprah way back in the day, she wont even share details with me because she was so heart broken. My thing is she's soo accomplished as a media mogul and philanthropist, it's really a shame she has to be so domineering that she can't uplift and big-up other super driven, talented black women. Her thing is her dream as a little girl was to be a famous actress, and in her mind, she hasn't quite gotten the recognition she would like for her acting chops. I'm afraid Oprah might be a good example for the whole "never meet your heroes" concept, unless you meet her when a camera's on her. Then we will see her majesty in full diety mode. Oprah, after all, didn't get to where she is by being friendly and generous. She's a competitive, capitalist player of the game, and she's brilliant at it. But she has fumbled the ball a few times. (Whoopi, Mo'nique, Taraji, Hawaii, etc.), Not to be too hard on her, she's never claimed to be perfect. Sometimes I think we expect perfection from O, and then tear her down for just being human. Yes, she's a very powerful player in the game, but like every other entertainer, she's just trying to stay afloat. Whoopi's in the same boat, but I think at the end of the day she can't be bothered with trying to be everything for everyone, she does her gig, and goes home, lights a fat one and reflects on how lucky and chosen she's been in this life 🚬😮💨 That's the real accomplishment in my book.
Also, you can't tell me it wasn't pointed that TPH made her tearful statement about her pay on Gayle's show.

Reading some of the comments and I wish people would stop blaming Oprah for what other people agree to work for. Oprah is not responsible for everyone's complete happiness. I'm sure a contract was given with figures to sign and it probably was talked about for renegotiation. That's what we're all supposed to do even in our day to day lives. If you feel you're worth more ask for it. The worse can happen is a "no" and then the choice becomes yours to accept or keep looking. Or, to accept while continuing to look for better. Remember Oprah was the first black woman to do what she's done and did it successfully. You don't think that came with hardship and doors she had to knock down? She's often spoken about being the only black person in most rooms. She worked hard until she was able to give the demands rather than take them on her own set. It was Oprah who continuously had successful black stars on her Oprah show back in the day when no one else would put them on. She knew her words were so powerful then, that it pushed others to support our projects and movies. I think her second calling was becoming a Teacher. I think she would rather teach you how to get where she is rather than just giving out your dream amount of money because most people would be broke again in two years. This is an appreciation comment because this generation is quick to downplay a pioneer like Oprah for your favs of today.
I agree with SOME of what you are saying, but sometimes we have to accept that offer because there aren't any options at that time. I have had to do that. You cannot blame Taraji P. Henson for being upset with the offers she has been getting. She is a great actress and has been in the industry for many years, you don't think she deserves to be paid what she is worth? Taraji also mentioned she has other business ventures to help her stay afloat. She isn't asking people to feel sorry for her, she just wants things to be fair. As far as Oprah is concerned, I don't know how much pull she truly has with this production of The Color Purple. She may only have a minority stake investment in the project, so she may not have much of a say on what the actors are paid. But if she does, I think she should ride for black actors a little more in terms of equal pay. It isn't about Oprah being responsible for someone else's happiness. It is about lifting one another up with they need it. When you "make it" in the industry, don't leave others behind who want a shot. Besides, Oprah didn't become who she is totally on her own, someone saw her talents and gave her a shot.

You said someone saw something in Oprah and gave her a chance, isn't that what TCP did for Taraji? I'll never knock anyone for asking and demanding more. However, people are acting as if it is Oprah's sole responsibility to add Taraji to the multimillionaire list simply because she's black. The way everyone runs to social media for everything now if O were to have done that, every person she works with or helps will demand a "Taraji's payment" from Oprah and Oprah only simply because she's black. TP was already doing plays and was known to some of the black community. People forget that it was Oprah pushing her viewing audiences across the globe to go support Diary and introduced everyone to "Madea" on a broader spectrum because Oprah was THAT girl then and her name still holds weight today. I say that to say it was more valuable for her to give her platform over to him rather than funding his movies. That's all. We may not see eye to eye and that's fine. But I don't feel oprah is to blame for Taraji not getting paid what she believes she's worth. REMEMBER: the reason Taraji's plea is getting any mainstream publicity at all is because she is aligned to Oprah and The Color Purple. She has spoken about her pay before and no one really has bat an eye. So Oprah's name alone is still helping. May not be in the way people want but it's definitely still helping.
