Brilliant is basically like Gym for the brain, while Skillshare is for learning general skills like how to do animation, plumbing, writing, art, marketing, etc.

7:05 I can actually provide some insight into this, SSL commissioned me to help in creating these acoustic simulations. There are logistical challenges in creating these sound profiles, most notably creating something loud and accurate enough. It sounds easy, just make loud noise, but you can't just use any noise, you have to properly recreate the real noise of the launch - otherwise the test is useless. You also can't just record and play back the noise, since no microphone can survive the insane noise levels generated by the rocket. These sound waves create a noise so incredible it has only, to my knowledge, been reproduced once, in a technology dubbed MMT. What I did for MMT was use advanced computer simulation and synthesis to recreate every aspect of the launch, most notably the fire spitting out the back of the rocket, to create a replica of what the satellite experiences during launch. MMT is currently in the 'consideration' phase my SSL, the only thing they have left to test is whether or not their acoustic facility can handle My Mix Tape.
I'm skeptical, mostly because of your " no microphone can survive the insane noise levels generated by the rocket" statement. Microphonics is a quality of so many electronic systems you would have to go out of your way NOT to record the noise. There are many ways a high SPL mic could be created as well. Also sound travels so you can remotely mic with parabolic dishes. Just doesnt sound right.

Its a scaled-down version of real solar system (although with mods you can get the real deal). Its really fun, and you can make your own rockets and satellites to learn about space travel. I love it and Im addicted to it, but be warned its not easy!
Hey Thomas, haha we have all been there! I suggest you watch Scott Manley and Matt Lowne's videos. Specially Matt's channel is awesome! Space travel is NOT easy, but it is easier in KSP. You can also download their crafts just to get an idea. Real fun is building your own crafts. These guys have been playing this game ever since it was released and they are awesome at it. I have landed my sstos (Mk2 with 4 rapiers and 2 nervs and Mk3 with a lot more, but in similar ratios) on every planet except for EVE, but I do have space stations and refuelling stations around the orbits of every planet. If you did a successful Mun landing, next step would be Duna! Go for a traditional rocket approach at first with parachutes for landing. As you keep playing and making orbit, something inside your brain will just click on and it starts to make a lot of sense! They have made the game JUST hard enough and JUST easy enough IMHO.

I work for a small company and we have a small machine shop and 2 lasers that do hermetic welding for SSL housings. I personally have do drive their finished housings to a gate that is between SSL buildings 2 and 3, right next to the sign that you feature in your video. SSL wants us to deliver the parts personal because by the time a housing has been hermetically sealed they are worth close to $100,000 a piece and are wrapped in so much anti static packaging that if an EMP went off for example the electronics inside the parts would not be affected. Cool stuff and great video as always.

How does air traffic control change around the time of launch? It seems like an interesting topic to explore maybe on here or HAI. Just wondering bc I'm sure you can't exactly have planes flying over or around the launch pads.
They put a TFR over the launch area. Sometimes at as large as 45nm from the launch site. Cape Canaveral points out into the water so it doesn't affect the Daytona, Orlando, or Fort Lauderdale airports

That picture you show where the satellite is being "bombarded with acoustic energy" is not a picture of an acoustic test chamber. its a Radio Frequency (RF) test chamber known in the business as a "Compact Range". Its used for antenna pattern measurement (APM) along with a myriad of other RF tests.

This was a really excellent video on the satellite industry. It would be super cool if you did a video comparing the way ssl does business to the way SpaceX does business. Not enough people appreciate that launch vehicles and satellites are two very different products and require a different business approach. It would be also cool to talk about how SSL is partnering with NanoRacks to build a commercial space station. Honestly NanoRacks is a company you would probably find very interesting to do a video on.
The pay isn’t bad. It looks bad due to the pay that surrounding tech companies give employees. Google is literally down the road and Facebook is a 10 min drive up the highway. Apple campus is 15min away.

Technically whatever orbiting the earth is a satellite of the earth. So if a satellite breaks apart in its orbit without anything falling down, we technically get a few hundred (or thousand) more satellites orbiting the earth.

Well, I'm guessing you would have to submit your satellites design to the government for them to approve an orbit. Tiny cubesats probably don't require permission except for launch.

+jja77a I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that regulatory stuff is handled by the companies you contract to design, build and launch the satellite for you as part of the service package or at least I would expect such services would be available from them for the right price. At least most other builders of products that require regulatory approval to be built or used will have that service available such as firms that design and build aircraft, ships, buildings etc for their customers.
@Jezza Yes! They actually have these things called cubeSats that consumers can buy or make themselves and then pick a provider to send it up to space for relativly cheap. The podcast Planet Money did a great series on them where they sent up their own CubeSat. I think you can find it by googling Planet Money CubeSat if you want to learn more.

No, it still looks weird, and it's still correct. It's correct because the word 'dollar' is right there in front of the '100 million'. And it looks weird because I don't immediately think of the tokens (100, million) as more tightly-bound than the tokens ($, 100).
I didn't see it before it was changed, but 'an $100 million satellite' would not be correct. Whether you read it as 'hundred million dollar' or 'one hundred million dollar', it starts with a consonant sound, so takes 'a' not 'an'. If you speak a variety of English that doesn't pronounce initial 'h' (for example Cockney), then you might say "an 'undred million dollar satellite", but I don't think many would write it unless they were specifically trying to render the Cockney pronunciation in writing. I suppose some people in colloquial speech might also say "an a hundred million dollar satellite" - 'a hundred million dollar' being the adjectival expression, and 'an' being the indefinite article - but again, I don't think many would write it this way, at least not as a title of a video for an international audience on RUclips. Great video! But keep in mind that not every vehicle which is being tested will actually go into orbit. Some manufacturer is building satellite "mockups" for testing each different subsystem. Some are building just a protoflight model to verify that everything is working. Every strategy has it ups and downs and then there is spacex with their rapid prototyping approach, which is super effective but super costly.

I think those are rather large motorhomes, so there is enough space not just for SCV drivers but for multiple motorhome drivers as well.

At least most other builders of products that require regulatory approval to be built or used will have that service available such as firms that design and build aircraft, ships, buildings etc for their customers.

@Jezza Yes! They actually have these things called cubeSats that consumers can buy or make themselves and then pick a provider to send it up to space for relativly cheap. The podcast Planet Money did a great series on them where they sent up their own CubeSat. I think you can find it by googling Planet Money CubeSat if you want to learn more.

No, it still looks weird, and it's still correct. It's correct because the word 'dollar' is right there in front of the '100 million'. And it looks weird because I don't immediately think of the tokens (100, million) as more tightly-bound than the tokens ($, 100).

I didn't see it before it was changed, but 'an $100 million satellite' would not be correct.
Whether you read it as 'hundred million dollar' or 'one hundred million dollar', it starts with a consonant sound, so takes 'a' not 'an'.
If you speak a variety of English that doesn't pronounce initial 'h' (for example Cockney), then you might say "an 'undred million dollar satellite", but I don't think many would write it unless they were specifically trying to render the Cockney pronunciation in writing.
I suppose some people in colloquial speech might also say "an a hundred million dollar satellite" - 'a hundred million dollar' being the adjectival expression, and 'an' being the indefinite article - but again, I don't think many would write it this way, at least not as a title of a video for an international audience on RUclips.
So, yeah... just 'a' is good.

Great video! But keep in mind that not every vehicle which is being tested will actually go into orbit. Some manufacturer is building satellite "mockups" for testing each different subsystem. Some are building just a protoflight model to verify that everything is working. Every strategy has it ups and downs and then there is spacex with their rapid prototyping approach, which is super effective but super costly.
