Seeing your kid help you out on these rebuilds is awesome! I've been trying to get my 4yo interested in the modding I do. So far, she loves watching me work.
I'd like this on a GBA Advance SP model! The GBC screen is 4.0 x 4.4cm. GBA & SP is 4.1x 6.1cm. The Q10 original screen is 5.5 x 5.5cm and is mostly covered up to achieve the same size screen that is on GBC. If there is a existing product with OLED screen that is roughly between 4.1 x 6.1cm and 6.0 x 7.0cm, the GBA version could be made.
@user-hz4fj5xw2u with 3d printing becoming more affordable and services to print open source boards to swap the old chips or hardware emulation (FPGBC ) there will always be a market for these types of modifications. I imported a DMG from Japan and it still works beautifully (replaced the old screen) like it was brand new. The hardware lasting is always a gamble but i think its pretty cool that these old systems still have the attention they do
this is what i've been waiting for for 20+ years! I always wanted an OLED screen on my gameboy since I heard about them back on the discovery channel in the 90's they had a show called "Beyond 2000" and they showcased OLED screens, but back then they were like $100,000 for even the smallest OLED screen!
naww, so cute your lil kid helping you! My son is only 2, can't wait till he's old enough to help me with these kind of projects :). Ordered a kit btw, looks great!
I'm currently rebuilding my original GB Color. It was the Atomic Purple. Preserving the original case and screen, and bought an Atomic Green case, this OLED screen, new capacitors and fuses, new louder, clearer speaker, audio amp, clean power converter, and converting it to a USB-C rechargeable lithium battery pack. No more AA batteries being replaced after a couple weeks.
Ordered this as soon as I saw this vid- got delivered 2 days ago…just set aside the time to complete the project and it turned out great 🙌🏾😭 and it was my very first time soldering with a solder kit I bought off Amazon
i'm so happy i ordered one just after seeing your video. it's probably the best mod i've ever made to a game boy. it's wort it for the light up logo alone! i hope something like this will be released for the advance someday.
Incredibly surprising that this OLED screen is actually more power efficient by 2 whole hours vs an IPS. I especially like how this mod sits in a see through case since the FunnyPlaying one is pretty intense with the large jut out covered in copper shielding.
Thank goodness for this mod. When the Analogue Pocket came out (with the original price of $199) I almost bit the hook except that it was always sold out. Now they increased the price by $20, which is almost half the price of the kit. This makes more sense than the Analogue Pocket (provided that you already have a GBC).
I just wish we could get the Game Boy Color logo to light up with the appropriate colors for each letter🥲 But I’m super excited to have one of these kits on it’s way to me😄
I can't believe you cut the footage at 1:33 JUST BEFORE you got the tetris, lol. That really ruffles my OCD. ;) Love the video though, I'm definitely gonna buy this screen. It does appear to be out of stock currently on aliexpress, but it says they're getting in more soon.
This looks awesome...! I just build a Funnyplaying FPGBC a couple of weeks ago. Seems I'll be building another GBC next month or so... :) Edit: seems like I am not building one... €352,- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!?
It is like having a portable CRT screen. CRT level GBC for the win! No compromises. Hopefully a Game Gear AMOLED mod can be done. Same with Wonderswan.
Recommend to cut a portion of the cart pin connectors and use the included protective film on them aswell in order to avoid shorting the screen. Managed to break my first Amoled Screen from HiSpeedio due to not cutting the cart pins
Neat though if there was a board option for the NGPC, that'd be something special. Also like the idea of mixing this screen with a DMG + Super Gameboy and throwing it in a Hyperboy for a mini arcade kit. Also I really like the idea of the FPGBC but I'd be willing to pay extra for an FPGA option that supported multiple cores or at least the ones that make sense on a 1:1 AMOLED screen.
AMOLED is cool, and Analogue Pocket's fake gridlines with 1660x1440 display is cool, but the original Color screen used a reflective LCD display. It could show colour pixels on the screen kind of floating against the transparent background of unactivated pixels in their default state, which produced a pretty unique and eye catching look. Modern LCD and OLED displays make every pixel look activated all the time.
I don't care for GB or GBC games but a touch screen OLED screen of this size being available to buy is REALLY cool to me and this is an awesome use for it!! OLED really is the best it gets, If I ever get a Steam Deck OLED I'd love to run Dolphin on it and see how GameCube and Wii games look
My 1st gameboy was a limegreen gameboy color, so this transparent green backlit gbc is definitely my fave nostalgically. Tho i decided to just mod my bro's old pink GBA classic with a backlit screen, but this would be so tempting if i didn't do that a year ago
I wonder what's the definitive way to be playing retro titles up until snes/gba on a portable handheld. Having the best ergonomics and controls, an oled screen, good performance and audio. All in a nicely-sized formfactor too. There are a ton of retro handhelds, but I have no idea if there is one who gets all those basics just right.
The best thing is the build in scanline effects. This kind of build in effects is important for future arcade cabinet repairs. If CRT monitors are dying there could be a LCD panel on the market specially for retro hardware with build in perfect crt effects so the original crt feelings will be preserved. I never understand why people play retro games with the pixel perfect option. On a CRT those old games looked WAY better. Even new games like N64 games look just horrible on a modern panel.
3 missed opportunities: 1) individual colored characters for logo, 2) proper pixel grid, taking colors other than black, 3) color adjustment options for GB four-color games, just like mgb hispeedido mods do
Unbeknownst to us, blackberry has helped so much of the retro gaming community with their displays. The original Miyoo Mini also uses blackberry displays. Can't wait for the retro handhelds using blackberry passport's display next (1440 x 1440) that would be super cool! 🤣
exactly, that might end up being an issue since most of the games have static ui elements. perhaps he didn't talk about it due to it being a sponsorship or something but that is a major downside to this kit which should have been covered in the video.
Dude, amoled is the perfect mod for gameboy screens. Low power consumption, brighter display, better color accuracy. This destroys all IPS mods we've had over the years!
That power wire gauge is very small and you're likely going to get significant voltage drop on it. I'd definitely recommend using a thicker wire there..
Just got my kit in the mail today. However I noticed that the PCB on the display board was marked LCD, and at 2:45 yours is too. Are we sure this is actually OLED?
3/28 Update - Currently back in stock. They said they will add stock of missing shell colors over the next few days until they have 20 in total.
Do you know which Shells are compatibel? I want a clear one, but FP doesnt have one.
Hi Taki
Do you know if this amoled screen is compatible with FunnyPlaying’s FPGA GBC motherboard?
Yeah I went back to my cart to purchase and it went up to $300. Sheesh.
Yes, the smart Chinese smelled the money and raised the price. We'll have to wait for the price to return. I wanted to take it too.
According to the product details, it is out of stock now and will be back in stock in 10 days.
Honestly, the novelty of the lit up Gameboy Color logo is cool enough
Only 5 years ago there were no options. Now we’re at touch screen OLED screens. Amazing.
i remember cracking 2 original DMG's while doing the bivert mod a few years ago. It was a game changer at the time.
10 years ago, many of us uses GBASP front light panels for GBA and GBC.
Competition breeds progress.
Thanks for the after burner settings 😅
@@Fleshlight_Reviewer ey yo, you mean on the Ally?
Seeing your kid help you out on these rebuilds is awesome! I've been trying to get my 4yo interested in the modding I do. So far, she loves watching me work.
I'd love to see this done for the GBA! I know there aren't really any 3:2 AMOLED displays but one can dream!
I'd like this on a GBA Advance SP model! The GBC screen is 4.0 x 4.4cm. GBA & SP is 4.1x 6.1cm. Can you find the Episode?😊
freaking awesome memory and now 50 dolars😊
Still no realistically usable flying cars, though… 😄
omg, it's about time there was an OLED mod!
I have 2 GBC's I need to mod. This came at the PERFECT TIME!!!
naww, so cute your lil kid helping you! My son is only 2, can't wait till he's old enough to help me with these kind of projects :). Ordered a kit btw, looks great!
OLED has been such a saving grace for retro games, which were programed to work with the low response times of 90's TVs and CRTs.
Oh this really does look lovely. I always love seeing the new stuff that you share on here!
Legendary. I hope they bring this out for GBA as well. It's just insane!
How did you preserve the original case? Doesn't the case have to be trimmed to fit the OLED?
25 years ago.... that hit hard, square in the gut. I remember going to my cousins house, seeing his for the first time.... 25 freaking years ago
Just installed this and it’s amazing.
finally. I've been waiting for an oled display in a handheld. now just get one of these in a gameboy pocket and a GBA and I'll be satisfied
Ordered this as soon as I saw this vid- got delivered 2 days ago…just set aside the time to complete the project and it turned out great 🙌🏾😭 and it was my very first time soldering with a solder kit I bought off Amazon
Just ordered! Thank you!
I did a q5 screen mod last year and i'm really happy with it, but this looks amazing! Thanks for calling this out!
I've got a q5 too and I find the lack of frame blending really frustrating
Thank you for this. Pretty complete video and I love the comparison part. Awesome
that's amazing. I love the GameBoy Color.. I had the purple one and I donated it to a young child with a broken home
i'm so happy i ordered one just after seeing your video. it's probably the best mod i've ever made to a game boy. it's wort it for the light up logo alone! i hope something like this will be released for the advance someday.
Legend says that if you put this screen on a fpgbc it evolves into an analogue pocket
Does it work on the fpgbc?
@@ShamanNoodles probably not I doubt it
Holy. I've been looking into emu devices but I'm definitely gonna look into a new screen for my gbc as well. Looks so clean.
I still wish the logo has the setting to where it looks like the colors of the actual Gameboy color logo
The logo lighting sold it for me. Holy crap that is amazing!
This looks amazingly beautiful.
Wow this is fantastic, it looks so good!
Love everything about this. Now we just need screens for the GBA and SP!
I would love a kit like this for the GBA
Will happen.
@@fz96 hopefully soon! 🙏🏼

7:25. The only thing that would make the light up logo even cooler is the option to control its brightness separately
When the display controller has more power than the console
Great walkthrough, got me hooked on an upgrade

Absolutely beautiful display!
What an awesome mod !! I love it ❤
If this screen could work with that FPGA motherboard from FunnyPlaying, that would be an amazing build.
Looks excellent. I hope an AMOLED kit for the GBA hits the market in the near future as well.

Damn this is good, i hope funny playing could get this screen and use this on their next fpgbc revision.
But a FPGBA pls 😅

Can you cover all the best clamshell devices?
I'll do it for you
1) Ds Lite
2) New 3DS XL
3) GBA SP
A good list
I would put DSi instead of Lite but presume you;ve put that for the GBA comapatability so definitely wouldn't argue @@CarpetBanana

Damnit! Last week, I just finished upgrading my old GBC with an IPS backlit LCD screen..for the same price!..on aliexpress!
Oh my effing gosh it finally happened! VIVA LA GAMEBOY COLOR!!!!!!! 🎊🎉🥂
imagine how awesome it will be when they start making amoled replacements for DS and 3DS models!
love these mods. I have my fingers crossed for some original 2ds shell and screen mods soon.
Problem with some of these new screens, is that the refresh rate, doesn't match the one used by the original display, which leads to framedrops.

3 missed opportunities: 1) individual colored characters for logo, 2) proper pixel grid, taking colors other than black, 3) color adjustment options for GB four-color games, just like mgb hispeedido mods do
Having a scrolling color effect on the GB logo would be so sick.
We really need more transparent green handhelds.
OLED screens are perfect for Game Boy and NES games, they look sooo good considering how many of thrm used just black backgrounds.
I’m curious if this new kit fits the pre-cut shells for the older Q5 kit, there are a lot more shell color and design options for the Q5
It does

now bring this to psp's O_O :D Waited for an OLED mod for so long, finally
8:08 - I prefer the one on the right. You're losing contrast / gradient with the one on the left. Especially noticeable on the the ship.
What about burn-in?
Turn turn the brightness
exactly, that might end up being an issue since most of the games have static ui elements. perhaps he didn't talk about it due to it being a sponsorship or something but that is a major downside to this kit which should have been covered in the video.
Now THIS screen is sexy. Look at those colors pop, let alone the extended battery life & longevity 🤓🎮
i like when black glows... makes the whole screen feel alive vs pure black just looks like dead wasted space in the metroid game he was playing
The logo sold me... f*ckin slick
Dude, amoled is the perfect mod for gameboy screens. Low power consumption, brighter display, better color accuracy. This destroys all IPS mods we've had over the years!
This is the screen that the Play Date should have come with
what is the name of the style or mod shell for the "gray GBC" at time marker 8:42... i want to track down that model or a shell mod like that for mine
Nice work growing more arms. Still a bit small, but I bet they're still growing.
That power wire gauge is very small and you're likely going to get significant voltage drop on it. I'd definitely recommend using a thicker wire there..
damn, i just cant decide what shell color to go with, they all look soo good!
Can't wait for a GBA version.
That's awesome, very well thought out too with the display adjustments. Great video, thanks.
OMG I need it!
Man, good thing I kept delaying my purchase on an IPS gameboy colour screen. This looks amazing
the best part is the light up logo 100%
This is really cool, pity I never had a GBC before.
Wow.. closer to my dream gameboy,
OLED + Less than 16ms latency in either the wide body shape AGB-001 or either of the SP variants.
Is it compatible with the FPGBC??? 😅
Love that green one❤
But OLED has still motion blur issue despite the response time of 0.01~0.2ms due to the lack of flickering.
That is such a beautiful mod.
With AMOLED you can even upgrade newer consols like Nintendo DS to improve picture quality!
OMG it does frame blending !!!!
Just got my kit in the mail today. However I noticed that the PCB on the display board was marked LCD, and at 2:45 yours is too. Are we sure this is actually OLED?
Can the screen be used as a replacement of FPGBC's screen which is an ordinary LCD, I believe?
