  • First time on the water with thus one after new points, condensers, plugs, wires, one coil, carb cleaning, fuel lines, and a new impeller. This is a VERY low hour motor and once the kinks were worked out, it runs beautifully. Like a new one 59 years later. Great runner and a pretty nice looking original.

    I recently been snatching up all the classic outboards on FB marketplace in Portland, OR. Usually find them for a hundo. Not the highest performance, but they got style.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  8 дней назад

      They definitely have style. Depending upon the motor, sometimes the performance isn't so bad either. The small motors typically aren't going to get you anywhere fast, but even the old 10hp motors will get you on plane and push you along at a very respectable pace. They're very comparable in performance to a modern 9.9. Thanks for watching!

    Yes, that is one sweet running motor. Quality built back then. I have my Dad's 18hp Johnson, in the shed, Dad borrowed that motor to everyone who asked. At times it came back broken down, he never said to much, just repaired it and we took it with us to Canada fishing. Fond memories hearing yours run.

    I'm building a 58 5.5 just like yours at the moment. Bought it with water in the cylinders but finally found a new powerhead for it. The rest of it is in beautiful shape and I have about $350 in new gaskets, carb rebuild kit, water pump, and various other parts. Your video was great. It gave me a great reference on expectations and proformance. And they're great little outboards to boot. Great video, 2 thumbs up.

      Thank you. I did a full series of videos of tuning up my 1959 Evinrude Fastwin Electric Start. Benn Dittmar did an excellent full length video on a 1955 Johnson CD-12 5.5hp on his Chrysleroutboarddude channel. I figured his kind of negated the need for me to do one since it was probably done better than my series. Maybe someday I'll get better at video editing and have better equipment for doing how-to's. billrok Thanks Bill! Yes, this one is a beauty. I am.amazed at how little runnimg time this engine has. It was a bit of a challenge to get it back to right. I did not suspect a bad coil as it was a very nice looking Prufrex. I replaced it with a good used OMC coil and everything was back to normal woth the spark. I also got a bad set of OMC points in the tune up kit I put in this one. I'll be able to bend them a little and make them work, but I polished up a good used set and the adjustment problem end away. After that I was dialing in the carb and the rest is history. It's as close to brand new as any 50s 5.5 I have ever had or seen. Thanks for watching!

    I'm in Scotland have two jonnyrudes the older ones a 75hp that I tuned (bigger coils & HTs, carb work and home made intake) it's easily at 85hp at the prop on a 1978 mayland 14ft fishing boat weighing 228kg it does 55+mph cruises at 36-38 70% best fuel economy while tramping and is one of the most terrifying boats I've ever been on nevermind built or owned. Anything over 90% throttle once it's on plane is just silly. It reels in all but the 300hp jetskis or proper speed boats and just eats anything thats designed for 40-50knot like they are nothing. It catches older skis about 40mph and I think I've done over 60knot on loch lomond full throttle on the calm days. I know the hull was a copy of Vospa MTB from ww2 and I know it was the same guys who built the actual huge Motor Torpedo Boat but I don't know the limit of the boat so I don't push too far, my fear is that it bursts a seam around the cuddy of I hit too big a wave above about 50. I'm just not sure but if I knew the boat could take it I would happily give it full stick everywhere and just book more dentist appointments.

      I use 3/16" rubber fuel line from the local auto parts store. The correct size is actually 5/32" and while that does work a little better and doesn't require much of a clamp to hold them, I use 3/16" and the hose clamp style zip ties and don't have any problems with leaks. As far as the fitting for the motor side, look on ebay for the seal line pressure tank style motor side fitting. If you have the pressure tank with a fitting already, you're all set. If the tank fitting leaks, they can be rebuilt with new o-rings. Thanks for watching!

      Are you looking for the connector that goes on the tank or the one that fits on the motor? These motors use the 2-line pressure tank fuel system. If.you buy a working 2-line tank, it should have the tank side fitting attached to the hose. The hose doesn't detach from a pressure tank like the single line suction tanks do. Thanks for watching!

    Do you ever seem to have issues with plug fouling running these at 24:1? Mine seems to foul plugs if I idle for too long. I know eventually oil fouling is inevitable but it just seems I happen too quick. I’m using synthetic tcw3 and the plugs were new 3 years ago but I’ve cleaned them since. The condensers are still original tho, could that contribute? Thanks

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 года назад

      No. I don't have spark plug fouling issues with TCW-3 oil all the way to 8:1 mix ratio. Excessive fuel innthe fuel / air mixture fouls plugs much more efficiently than the oil in the mix. If you are fouling spark plugs while idling, I'm thinking your low speed circuit is set too rich. It takes a long time idling to get the spark plugs to foul out from oil if the fuel / air mixture is correct. Bad condensers can certainly make for a weak spark condition which may lose its ability to fire through even a light coating of oil on the plugs. I would replace the condensers, clean and adjust the points, and dial in the low speed. I have a video on this channel explaining how to dial in the carburetor if you're not sure how to do that. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @joeblo4306
      @joeblo4306 3 года назад

      Thanks for the quick reply! That’s what I’ve been suspecting is that these motors should idle for hours before fouling. I’ve got the carb as lean as I can get without sneezing so I’ll try the condensers like you say and readjust the points.
      Ps always enjoy watching your videos and that motor is in gorgeous condition!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 года назад

      @@joeblo4306 Yes, you should get hours of trolling time ot of these motors without plug fouling if they are properly tuned. Condensers are worth checking/replacing if they are in question. If you cannot achieve a slow and steady idle without lean sneezing or fouling spark plugs, you may want to check your link and sync. It may be bringing the carburetor in too early. The notch on the throttle cam should be in the center of the cam roller for the carburetor at the moment all.the slack in the carburetor linkage is taken up and the actual throttle valve (butterfly) begins to move. If it is already set that way, try to delay the pickup of the carburetor to around 1/4" past the mark. I hope this helps.

    • @joeblo4306
      @joeblo4306 3 года назад

      Sounds good I’ll give that a try too! I changed the condensers and gave it a run. It actually idles pretty good but as soon as I rev it up past 1/3 throttle it seems to have trouble deciding between 1 and both cylinders... and then at higher throttle settings it runs smoothly. Might be plug wires... only thing left to change. Also does the stator on yours have a little play in it at all? And are you running champion J4Cs in that? Thanks

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 года назад

      @@joeblo4306 I would definitely recommend replacing the spark plug wires. It sounds like a bad connection at one end or the other on one of the plug wires. It could also be contacting sometime and shorting to ground part way through the rotation of the mag plate. That is often the issue when one cylinder cuts out at certain throttle positions. You may try running the motor innthe dark with the cover off too. Sometimes the issue will show up as a visible spark in the dark. I'm not sure now if I put J4C or J6C plugs in this motor. I'm sure it has one or the other in it. I use J6C plugs in most of my OMC magneto motors, other than the ones that I run hard at full throttle a lot. I usually opt for J4C in those.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  5 лет назад

      No, it's correct. This is a 16:1 mix motor. It is a bushing powerhead with no rolling bearings. They need the oil. They're great little motors and they run very quiet and smoothly. Lots of them have been ruined by too little oil though. With a good modern fully synthetic TCW3 outboard oil you may be able to cheat it a little drier, say 24:1, but I recommend sticking with the factory ratio for best results and longest engine life. Usually between $70 and $180 for tune up parts and seals depending on what parts have to be replaced. Sometimes other things need to be replaced too. Yes, they made very nice motors. It is a shame they are not still building them today. The 5.5hp OMC motors were 16:1 mix motors from their debut in 1954 until 1960. In 1961 they went to 24:1 with needle bearings on the crank journals until 1964 where they changed the mix ratio across the board to 50:1 (except for the 3hp). Yours is a 16:1 motor. Some had internal changes that made this possible, some were already able to handle it amd others just got changed. The 3hp is a plain bearing powerhead with no needles or rollers at all. I never run any of my 3hps on less oil than 24:1 and if they have an adjustable high speed needle, I use 16:1 and tune accordingly. Thanks for watching!

    Does this motor throttle off a roller?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  2 года назад

      Yes, the throttle arm has a roller that rides the cam on the magneto plate to open the throttle as the timing advances. Thanks for watching!

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 thanks. Thought so. Mine is apparently missing.

      @@DiabolicalDesigns You're welcome. You are not getting anywhere close to full throttle opening without the roller, obviously. I have seen those turn up missing because the little E-clip had failed or gotten lost of the roller arm.

      Yeah, I'm going to have to order one. For now...I have fishing string tied to it with a handle lol.

      @@DiabolicalDesigns I guess that works till you get one, but you need to replace it. You'll like the motor a lot more with that fixed.

      kramden I think this one will be in my collection for a long time Don. I'm working on the series of 58 Johnsons and Evinrudes from 3 to 18hp. I'd go to 35, but I probably already have enough larger motors.
