The god of war devs actually didn’t ignore how elves in Alfheim look. The picture you showed was a dark elf from the game, but their portrayal of light elves were quite beautiful/luminescent.
I think we have Tolkien to blame (plus Gary Gygax and D&D) for having very strong opinions on what dwarves and elves are. Like, over on Jackson Crawford's awesome channel about all things Norse, he points out that you won't find any evidence in the old sagas that dwarves were actually short. And elves ... ? There is no consistent tradition that elves were bright and beautiful and friendly. The English word "oaf" basically means "elf"; the concept was that, if you had a child with mental / physical disabilities, it wasn't really a human child but an elf (rather, an "oaf") who got swapped for your beautiful human child who is living among the elves. And in German, the word for nightmare is "Albtraum", i.e. an "elf-dream". tl/dr elves were jerks.
In Norse mythology, the "light" elves were incredible beautiful and if you had a child with one, your child would be quite beautiful. There is a family tree said to be descendants of elves, but elves aren't instantly good or bad. They are both and everything, you never know where you have them. They were also described to be your erotic thoughts so how one looks like is all up to each and everyone. As for dwarfs, some do call them black elves, or svart alv, as it is in Norwegian. I think it is just something people started to use due to svartalfheim being their home
@@kingbeauregard pretty sure Tolkien’s elves are rather drawn from the Brittonic-Celt interpretation, which bares a much closer resemblance. I can’t remember the exact word but their name is related to Fae and they were basically described as tall, pale magical beings with a love of nature. The reason Frey was the king of Alfheim was that the elves where originally associated with the Vanir, perhaps minor Vanir gods. In one poem the terms where used interchangeably and they where both associated with fertility and nature with elves even being worshiped as minor fertility deities.
Also, there had been a war between the Vanir, who were supposed to have ruled the world before that time, and the Aesir which won it in the end. The ensuing truce was safeguarded by exchanging hostages, which lived among the opposite group and were treated quite well.
When you said the God of War developers completely ignored the description of elves in the real myths, that's not entirely true. You showed a picture of a dark elf, which is the type of elf you will come across the most because it's an enemy type. They're probably based off of the description of dwarves as black elves, like you mentioned in the Svartalfheim section of this video. But in the story, we're also shown plenty of light elves in Alfheim, who seem much closer to the real ones with a white glowing appearance, and seeming much more peaceful and graceful than the dark elves. I realise I probably sound like a fanboy who can't handle someone saying anything bad about the game, but I just couldn't help explaining things a little. Hopefully I'm not annoying :)

That last point really struck a cord with me. It’s a very valid point, why is it that Vikings were so eager to die in war and be taken to Valhalla just to prepare for a battle that they were already fully aware they had no hope of winning? But then I thought about what you said about Christian invaders destroying several old Norse texts and it occurred to me, maybe there were 2 possible outcomes to the myths about the ultimate battle. Maybe there was one outcome where there weren’t enough warriors in Valhalla or they just weren’t strong enough which is the ending we’re all familiar and another outcome where the Gods saved the nine worlds from complete destruction and tre Gods and mankind from extermination, but this outcome was destroyed by the Christians in a bonfire before Snorri Sturluson could copy it! That would add a little more motivation to the Vikings to become stronger and charge into battle not just expecting to die in battle but counting on it!
what may really bake your noodle is the knowledge that Ragnarok have some evidence of being a later interpretation. You should start a series on Hindu gods they are actually very interesting like the god Indra king of Heaven
In naruto indra was the uchia ancestor. It’s weird how all these names have so much meaning
5:42 I have been in need of a good laugh today and you sir just delivered!! besides that I have been reading into Norse Mythology recently and picked up a couple of the Norse story books. I really enjoyed your video going into great detail of how the worlds work, awesome content !
Now I can hear that list sung like the fairly odd parents theme song in my head 😂

The fact that i love hearing this kind of mythology is ten times better schools mythology
Very well done for what it was... Very concise. Reasonably comprehensive. The only dead air time was the alf joke.
And that was funny.
10/10

As a new Norse Pagan still learning things about my religion, this is comforting
Well first thing you're not supposed to call it pagan its called Ásatrú or Asatro. I think you're just a tween trying her hardest to be interesting.
@@bruderschweigen6889 Some call it Asatru, some call it heathery, some call it NORSE paganism
All 3 of them: Asatru, Heathenry, and Norse Paganism are used to refer to the same practice. You don't like the word paganism so your emo ass gets all pissy, paganism is what it is; paganism covers many religions, thats why you put NORSE infront of it, if you were a Greek pagan you'd put Greek infront of pagan. You're the only person in here who remotely gives a single fuck about what it's called. The word "Asatru" hasn't been been around for a hundred years
You're pissed and yelling at me because you missed your nap, go away
@@vivsika3137 you wouldn't call christianity abrahamic monotheism haha pagan is a word used by Christians. Its just stupid I mean it is your religion? But you dont even know the name of it. Have you read the sagas? Or just really like the show vikings?
@@bruderschweigen6889 that's because there's an actual way to worship Christianity in strict rules and bs, in Heathenry there's no right or wrong way, and the things you don't do are common fucking sense; you my friend are what we call a gate keeper
There's no Heathen bible, Heathen pope, Heathen church that states "you can't do this", it's a religion not only about worship of the deities but a religion about yourself
There's no rule stating that you have to call it "Asatru" therefore I will call it as I please, many heathens use the term pagan because it is more widely known, many use Heathen because that's another actual fucking name for it, and you can call it Asatru if you wish but if you really think there's some sort of rule that it MUST be Asatru then you need to check your facts
@@vivsika3137 what does any of that have to do with what I said? I was pointing out the name given by the nordic people not the Latin Christian name of pagan or heathen sounds like you want to be edgy more than someone who actually practices let's be real you're not a "pagan" or a "heathen" and do you really think there were no rules? They had many laws and rites that if not done correctly could bar you from entering Valhöll or Fólkvangr and fighting in Ragnarök. Hmm do you know where we got information for norse paganism? The eddas and sagas so if you haven't read a single one maybe start there? Seriously why do you call it your religion if you dont know the basics?
we are being spoiled this week!!!
