With the way Ezra is covering his ears in this video it looks like he is not only overwhelmed by visual stimuli, but also by loud noises. I noticed this in some newer videos but I don’t recall if I also noticed it in older videos like this one.
two children with autism? So does autism have a genetic component? And what a beautiful family you have and what a blessing that you are able to take them on such an adventure. Educational, fun and exciting. such great memories that they will always have.
I love the many adventures you guys are going on! I would like to hear more about Simon’s recent diagnosis and his journey. And while you’re at it, you could tell us about Ezra too! We love your family so much, it’s so great to watch your videos!
When I was younger (even two or three years older than Simon is here) I enjoyed riding on my mother’s back so I think I can see why he liked it. When you are younger your legs get tired more easily and when you are on someone’s back or shoulders you can generally see things in your environment that might otherwise be obstructed due to other people around you being taller than you are. Even though my father is taller than my mother riding on his back was a relatively uncommon occurrence (as I recall) so my experiences in this regard are sort of like Simon’s but not quite the same.
Some people in my family and some of my friends are skeptical of the idea that two people in an immediate family can both be on the spectrum. They are especially skeptical when both of those people are siblings. For example, a friend of mine has two grandsons who are on the spectrum and a granddaughter who might be and one of the people in my family indicated in a recent phone conversation that maybe it’s “a sibling rivalry thing”. More specifically some people I know tend to suspect that when one sibling has autism that the other sibling might be copying the behavior of the one who has been diagnosed (even during an evaluation) in order to get some of the attention that the other sibling has. I tried to explain that the evaluations are structured in such a way as to prevent this, but a couple of people I know have said “How can any test possibly rule something like that out?” There are so many psychology books and courses that talk about sibling relationships and sibling rivalry (especially during childhood) that I would be surprised if skepticism like what I described above about two siblings genuinely being on the spectrum isn’t extremely common. Maybe a future video can go into some detail on this topic.
At some point you might want to eventually see the National park in Hawaii. So far, that is the only National Park that I have been to. That one will definitely need to wait until Simon and Ezra are a bit older than they are now because there is a lot of hot magma there. If Ezra eventually (e.g. a few years from now, perhaps) gets to the point of no longer needing a toddler leash you might consider visiting this park one day. It was interesting to see the beaches, the top of one of the volcanoes and the lava tubes. I saw this back in the 1990s when my father went to a convention in Hawaii in connection with his work.
It always seems from what I have seen and noticed with families I know or know of is that once you have a child with autism, any children a couple have after that will most likely have autism
It looks that way in a lot families. I do know two families that have one older Autistic child and younger children who don't have Autism, but both of their Autistic kids are girls. hmmm. I wonder if that has anything to do with genetics, somehow. -Holly
That’s interesting. Simon is only two-years-old, so we don’t really know much about his diagnosis, but I love getting to know others on the Autism Spectrum so I can be a better parent for my kids. -Holly
There are a number of factors here. First is that there are a number of genetic factors that have been found to correlate with autism, so depending which one(s) is/are involved in a given family, the way things play out can be different. Secondly, while you can always pass on any genetic condition that doesn't kill you or render you infertile, sometimes you acquire a genetic condition due to a mutation in the sperm or egg that started you off that wasn't present in either parent. The chances for this to happen tend to be low, but increase with the age of one or both parents. Thirdly, diagnosis of less obvious cases has improved over time, so later children are likely to get better screening. Fourthly, once a child is diagnosed, similar issues in later children, even if less severe, are more likely to be noticed and recognized as signs of autism. The earlier children may also be autistic, but if it did not cause obvious impairment it may have been overlooked. If both parents are autistic, the chances that all kids will be are significant. There's one channel on RUclips where two children (not adjacent in birth order) were diagnosed in early childhood, but as the family learned about autism, they began to suspect that other children meet the diagnostic criteria, and, in the end, all five children and both parents all received diagnoses. In my own family, I'm the firstborn and am almost certainly autistic, my little brother, however, does not seem to be.
@@7Aheadfamily That is very exciting!!! I am sure the view from there is gorgeous. And how fun that you have older kids that can help experience the process of building there own home. What an exciting adventure. CONGRATS!!
I wanna take my kids and grandchildren on a trip like this my 4 older kids we went to more then half then the MLB Ballparks baseball ⚾️ before my 7 yr old physically challenged son was born also twin 5 year olds one Autistic would love 💕 to take them from Massachusetts to Oregon to visit my oldest son 24 yo and see my newest grandson ❤ can only go to Cape Cod and Vermont so meny times 😝
Ezra are nevoie de o persoana numai pentru el,nu cedeaza lui Simon nimic,el s-a suparat evident si nestiind nimic nou ca exprimare a manifestat in acelasi mod. De ce Ezra vrea o persoana numai pentru el?????
Ezra’s does get a lot of attention. But he may not seem like he does on these videos because we are concentrating on creating a video. But offsets when we’re not creating a video we spend time with him one on one in social interactions. Perhaps we should include more of that in the videos

Yeah. That’s a good point.
That was a lot of parks!
51!
I also liked playing in water when I was younger(and so did my sister) as long as the water wasn’t too cold.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you. 😊 Yes, I would say there’s a genetic component.
Excited for the future!!!

Amazing trip!

Yes, thank you! We can put that on our list. 😊

Yeah my older brother was diagnosed with severe autism and becasue of that they diagnosed me and found out that I was also on the autism spectrum
