I played and DM'd D&D 1980-1985. Had a blast. One of my fave characters was a tongue in cheek, overly top lawfully good Paladin named Persh of Noy who pissed off my friends but in a fun, eye rolling way. It was a ton of fun. We were mostly into Conan type action with Gothic horror thrown in. You're making me D&D nostalgic. 😉 I appreciate your 3 part review for different audiences. Great idea.

Friends have bought me a ticket for next weekend.
I am not thrilled to hear that it is geared towards 5th Edition (yuck!) and Forgotten Realms.
Understandable since the modern audience doesn't know quality AD&D in the Greyhawk setting (or as a runner-up, Edition 3.5) but it makes me think the film will be dumbed down like the 4th & 5th Edition game mechanics.

What is it with reviewers feeling the need to pander to the "anti-woke" brigade? You realise that you're doing something worse than what you think you're "protesting" against and that most of that doesn't even exist and it's getting kinda pathetic. The kinda person that goes into meltdown about a director quipping about "we like emasculating the lead..." as a bit of a not-so-modern subversion of the heroic trope is really just way too precious and more than a little sad.
It's a fun, D&D faithful, quality romp and Rodrigues completely kicks butt. This is proper 80's era nostalgia cinema with a modern take unlike the cringe of Top Gun: Maverick which really did pander to a certain dinosaur audience.

Nope. I'm an 80s fantasy fan, David Eddings, David Gemmell etc. Never played D&D but loved the 80s cartoon as a kid... Heard they kill their lookalikes in this movie... After the comments from the director about emasculating the guys, even if they don't do it in the film the thought is there... Nah. I'm so sick of Hollywood so have zero interest in this.

I read a crapton of D&D books across all the Campaign Settings in the early 90s, and there was a ton of light, breezy adventures that were not to be taken too seriously. Spellfire, Curse of the Azure Bonds, any of the Dragonlance books centering around the more comedic characters. Certainly there was more grim content as well (like Cyric brutally murdering his way on the way to Godhood in the Avatar Trilogy) but if anyone is claiming the tone of Honor Among Thieves is new to Forgotten Realms then they either missed large swaths of the fiction that was put out thirty years ago, or are just choosing to remember things differently.

I've been playing D&D since TSR's 2nd ed AD&D. I hated the Vox Machina show (couldn't get all the way through the first season) and couldn't for the life of me understand why it was so popular. If that is a better D&D adaptation than Honor Among Thieves, then it looks like a skip from me.

Now give us what we really need!!!! An R rated Menzoberranzan series, a Ravenloft series with Strahd (Jander Sunstar is a must) and a post apocalyptic nightmare based in Darksun. Gives us talented directors and a wonderful, but not necessarily famous cast. Hire the best writers on the planet and you will have something that will surpass Marvel.

I'm still perplexed by everyone having their normal hair they arrived on set with. I think that ties in with James's feeling things could get meta at any moment. There's a slight, but deliberate, distancing going on like the producers were afraid to commit to sincerity. Or that an earlier version of the script had the 'real people sucked into a game of d&d' angle.

This guy doesn't have powers but is confident in his role, leads a group of powerful characters, leads the into battle and comes out victorious, and participates in battle where he can. The problem of DnD and generic fantasy is that DnD is the definition of generic fantasy. The lore of it is plainly a clusterfuck. And yes, that detracts from the novels etc. a lot. DnD can never pull off a LOTR or anything similar precisely because it is designed to be a game with many many options and variants.
So I disagree on the fantasy review in that DnD fails hard in that department as a franchise. Yes, you can shove stories in there but you have to fight the lore and the world the entire way and suspend a ton of disbelief to accept it by shrugging and ignoring it just like in superhero comics you have to ignore where everyone else is.

    • @Jumpoable
