So many things to consider. You show many ways to get things done, and offer advice on many ways to garden on a budget. I have no doubt at all that you've helped a great number of people start and improve their gardens, and by extension helped them to be healthier and happier. Thanks. I feel I overlooked the simplicity so I am going to make more videos on it. Just because I like growing transplants, doesnt mean everyone should. Transplants have their role for sure but directing seeding is cost effective. Enjoy your weekend.

I absolutely love growing cucumbers in a tomato cage! Their little tendrils are so strong you might have to help them a bit once they start going up and over but it’s so much easier to care for! XOXO love your video

Using wire rack closet shelves are an expensive choice for trellising. Around here (Louisiana) these 4 ft shelves cost $11. I buy a roll of green wire fencing and cut sections as I need them for different plants in the garden. Works great for trellising just about anything.

Trying cucumbers for the first time this year (4th year oversll).Will be tuning in to to see what to do as temps warm up
Keep in mind you can plant cukes through summer. So on thing I will be talking about is planting in waves and replacing old plants.

I tried some animal bedding that looks like wood pellets from tractor supply for mulch. So far it’s pretty impressive . I have all container wicking tub type containers. The animal bedding expands a lot. To expensive for a large garden but I have used less than 2 bags. Once expanded and wetted down its stays put amazingly well. You might try some as an experiment

@@caroleanne8529 I have goats and chickens and use their aged wood shavings bedding as mulch. I now have a lovely pile that is a few years old! Makes a great compost/ mulch top dressing.
Gary. When your cucumbers are nearing the end of their lifespan can you plant more cucumber seeds in the same area to use the same trellises?
Yeah thats a great strategy. Plant seeds or start some in larger container for transplants. You can always get 3 waves of cucumbers in here in Maryland.

It was recommended we put cedar mulch in the garden because it repels bugs. It repels pollinators also....so what is the best chips for the job?
Cedar is really fine. It doesnt do much to be honest. But any hardwood is fine. I like shredded hardwood which is pretty come here.

Underwatering is ALWAYS my mistake. If I myself am not thirsty it simply doesn't occur to me, stupid I know. I personally do transplants bc of all the slugs that love new seedlings

Question? If they are turning yellow, should I add fish fertilizer or something else? I also have MG Ap 24-18-?? And MG 15-40-15 water soluble, as well as dr earth 4-6-3 pellets. Please advise
We are at 98 to 100 with a heat ndex of 120. Shade cloth is needed

It seems like all the mulch I get attracts ants. I end up with ants in my containers, and in/on the stored bags I have.

Will the seeds be able to come up through the layer of mulch? Or do you only mulch where there aren't seeds? Thank you so much for your videos!

Thanks for the video Gary. I am preparing for a fight with cucumber beetles this year. They devastated my pumpkin and watermelon plants last year. What are your thoughts on kaolin powder to deter them?
Dust the outer edges with Sevin or Spinosad. Works wonders and I have heard Kaolin does help.

Overhead watering had me scared. Good to know it won’t hurt my plants. I use straw in my garden.
This was me until this year. I try not to top water though unless it has enough time to evaporate before nightfall.

I use bedding straw as well. Have for years and i dont think I'll use anything else again. Plus the golden color is lovely

I do at times but I built this based on past experience. So right now squirrel can be an issue, raccoons, and rarely birds. I trap and releases problem animals.

You can leave them. They are good for decaying material. If you know what they are you can use them. But they dont cause harm to a garden.

Saw dust is best composted. I dries really fast. You could try it but being so fine, I think you could compost it pretty quickly.

Can you use shredded cardboard for mulch?
I'd be afraid of it drying out over time.

I have been using it for two yrs and it works ok at about 1 inch thick ( if it gets to thick it mats together and seems to stop oxygen from getting down to roots )
How do make your cucumber seedlings not decimated by slugs? I direct sow my cukes, but slugs just ate them halfway. So I had to re-sow the seeds again but this time in a small pot.
I use slug baits on them. I have videos on it if you search snails and slugs.

QUESTION: I think I dropped the ball with my flowers this year. I started them in the garage in late March early April dealt with a lot of fungal issues, got everything between 2 to 10 inches and transplanted early May. Very little blooming right now I seeded the sunflowers in early May, should've done that in April now something is eating down by my sunflower seedlings right after they germinate. This was my first year attempting flowers, and pollinators inside, I think next year I have to start them in January, February, and I need to find a warmer set up than the garage (even with the heating mats and space blankets I boxed the seed trays in with). I had great germination and transplants with my spring crops, using the same set up inside the garage, but I’m guessing flowers are little more sensitive. Do you or does anyone in the rusted Garden community? Have any recommendations for next season? Also, I am direct seeding flowers in pots now to try to get some controlled germination for later Summer transplant, I hope it’s not too late.
I would direct seeds and just make notes on issues and starting times. Plants that are struggling can be hit with water soluble fertilizer and will eventually come around.

Are you fertilizing with too much nitrogen? Are you getting flowers at all? Do gou see cucumber beetles?
I'm sorry but 80° is not hot. What about upper 90s and over 100°. You'll need to water possibly twice a day depending on your soil and shade situation.
