I actually like that they used it. I only know of two other ads that used his songs. It could also help introduce his music to other people that haven't heard it yet.

Maybe putting some of Prince’s songs out there; exposing his sound/style/essence will get some younger people interested in his life and all of the songs in his huge catalog. This will bring them to discover the wonder and brilliance that is Prince. Are there any individuals from his life, that he loved, who are guiding his legacy? Makes one wonder. (Reminds me of one of my favorite songs of his: I Wonder).

I think the Target thing is cool because they are based in Minni and they had a relationship with Prince previously. But I think if Prince’s fanbase is going to grow it’s got to be through more advertising. The more the music is heard the more (younger) population will be made aware of Prince. Personally, I’m past the “aww it’s not what Prince would have agreed with”. I’m of the older generation which means time is ticking and I just want to enjoy the music and enjoy the memories of all the concerts and aftershows I attended and look forward to more music from the vault.

I don’t think he would have done it himself.

Target is a Minnesota based company, it’s not that far of a stretch for them to use his song. Still PR track, so they stay with the most popular and well known album.

I know it will help to increase awareness and exposure of his music, and him as an artist, and he deserves that recognition in the current generation. That said, I doubt he would approve of a corporation uses his songs for commercial purposes.

I went to Minneapolis in 2016 after P transitioned and stayed in a hotel behind Fisrt Avenue. The hotel receptionist said that the President of Target rented busses for all Target employees to go out to Paisley the next day to pay homage and respect to this man. So Target and Prince just go together naturally. So I am not throwing any shade as the income is needed to keep the doors of PP open.
Also, happy that they approved for Simone to use Purple Rain song on America's Got Talent. I brings newer fam to dig a little deeper when his name.is constantly on the lips of folks. L4OA

I love that they did that! Also a very important point about America's Got Talent, I truly want the world to discover the incredible range of music Prince created and one single song could be someone's gateway into that.

Prince would hate this. He didn't like his music used this away.

Here's my take as somebody who is unfamiliar with Prince and only watched this because I saw a bunch of backlash from the target ad. The younger generation seems to have an interest in 80s style and music right now so I think this would be a peak time for Prince to reach a new fan base. I also think as we get farther away from the 80s people are going to lose interest. You don't hear people listening to very much music from the 40s anymore. People are saying it's not what he would have wanted but I don't think anybody wants to be forgotten or let their legacy fade into irrelevancy either. who knows how he would have felt in his later years but I think it's unfair to expect his siblings to gatekeep his music.

I really appreciate this comment particularly as it comes from outside the general Prince Community and I think you make a number of great points. There is a growing interest in eighties music (Obviously Prince 's work extended beyond that but the eighties will always be the most popular as this advert proves😊 ). Keeping Prince relevant but also ensuring that his music reaches new ears is the role of the Estate alongside releasing treasured from his vast vault. A big Thank you for this comment, really interesting to hear and a lot of truth there.

I'm a huge prince fan and it really bothers me. I don't like Prince or other popular songs being used in advertising. It trivializes them.
