    One of the waitresses at a restaurant I managed had this happen. She had a $5000 winner and they said she read it wrong and it was only $5. She asked for it back and they refused to return it to her saying once she handed it to them, it became store property. She stood there at the counter and called the cops. Clerk was escorted out in handcuffs. It was an entertaining lunch break for her and for those of us who got to hear the story.

    I was actually almost cheated out of my lottery winnings at a small convenience store gas station in Marietta, Ga. I already knew the ticket was a winner, but the clerk after scanning quickly pocketed the ticket, then looked me in the face and told me the ticket wasn't a winner. I knew he was lying and told him so, then I shocked him by requesting he return my ticket to me, I worked at Circle-K part of which was selling lottery tickets. so I already knew the rules. He refused, telling me that he had to submit all tickets back to the lottery agency, that he'd already thrown it away, we bantered a bit, he got his manager involved, and after more back and forths, the police were called. After the officer heard my side, he asked the store keeper to rescan the ticket which back then did not show the ticket was a winner, but had been scanned, I told the officer that the ticket was mine, and since it was supposedly declared "no winner" then I had a right to have my ticket back, I also informed him that I saw the man's actions once he scanned the ticket, putting his hand in his pocket after he pretended to bend over to put it in the trash, that most people don't bend over to drop something in the trash, they just drop it in. that I saw him put that same right hand into his right pocket while standing up straight again. The officer asked the manager what was the policy regarding tossing out scanned tickets, the manager told him, they threw the tickets away if they weren't of any value. The officer then said then return the young lady's ticket to her, they did, later I actually went to the lottery office and presented my ticket. I found out it was a winning ticket I'd won $1,500.00. After much investigation it was discovered this was a common occurrence at this station, even if it was only a $2.00 return, the owner and that clerk were prosecuted, there were some acquaintances of theirs involved also. Happy to say that business lost it's license and the business closed.

      Love hearing these stories though I guess it sucks knowing how frequent that is. We're not allowed to gamble in hawaii sadly but why is it not a law that the machines NEED to face the customer, even make an audible sound if the ticket even wins a dollar. That'd deter dishonest clerks with lights flashing, whistles going off, firecrackers popping (well maybe not literally), but they'd be damn ballsy to claim the ticket isn't a winner when the store looks like a dance club blasting techno music... Would also be good if they played different sounds based on the amount and even better reads it out like "Congratulations, you just won 145 dollars", no way they'd be able to cheat customers like that and it makes my blood boil thinking how many people got cheated and how many millions were probably pocketed by straight up thieves...

    My coworker won 3,000$ on a pick 3 we scanned it with our phone app at lunch. She wanted me to take her to the store to cash in so we did and as soon as the clerk did he took the ticket and crumpled it up and threw it in the trash and says sorry your not a winner. She said well give me back my ticket and he tried giving her a different one that was not a winner. I was with her and said give me that trash can we are getting her ticket back it is a winner. He refused, we wouldn’t leave until we got it back. She knew the numbers so we knew which one the ticket was. She got her money and he got fired.

      I'm in Canada, most places won't even scan a ticket here unless you have signed it! A few smaller mom and pop stores don't care and I don't take my tickets there anyway. Then the checking machines are always in plain sight and all tickets, losers and winner are placed on the counter beside the customer, along with the paper from the checker. I normally check my tickets at the public scanner first, but those are steps in place for those who don't. Many years ago, a store owner scammed a 1 or 2 million dollar ticket from someone and they are trying to make sure it never happens again.

    Something I want you guys to remember, most of the time these machines that scan your scratch off or lotto ticket, the official one, not the one where you can go check yourself but the one the employees use to scan will AUTOMATICALLY print out a ticket the store keeps to prove payouts. If it’s being scanned by the official machine and nothing prints out then it’s not a winner. So when you hand your suspected winner over, make sure you’re paying attention to the employee scanning on the lottery machine and if it’s a winner you’ll hear the machine print out something that the store needs to show an payout. Just make sure you’re paying attention when they’re scanning is my point

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 2 года назад +1

      Just for people's safety I will point out that machines I've worked with, if the money won is over a certain amount the machine will ask the clerk if they WANT TO cash it out. If they press no, it will NOT print out a ticket. Ours was anything $30 or over even though our policy was to cash out anything up to $100. So an unscrupulous cashier could get a ticket that said the customer won $500, and it asks the cashier if they want to pay it out, and then if they hit no, it clears it and does not print out a ticket. IF they print out a ticket, or if the machine does it automatically, that clerk can NOT take it to another store to cash it because it's already listed at cashed when the ticket prints. IF it prints a ticket, either on it's own or by the cashier hitting yes, the only way they can get the money is to process it on the registers there in the that store and take it out of the register.
      So if you are in doubt, ask for the ticket back. I always offered non winning tickets back to the customers.

    Shame all people aint honest. I was working on a ferry as a security guard over 14 years ago. I noticed a couple acting strange hanging around. When i went to check, they quickly moved away. I noticed something around where they were hanging around. It looked like rubbish left on top of the 800 cig boxes. When i got closer, it was a purse and i could clearly see without opening it, there must have been hundreds rolled up inside. I didnt want to hand it in as i didnt know if i could trust it with someone else and could blame me if anything was taken. I knew the people haging around would have stole it, so i put it in my back pocket and had a feeling it was an elderly person who just not concentrating. I could never take anything from anyone. Sure enough, a elderly lady came back and asked the crew who were french. They pointed to myself who was english and she asked if anyone had found a purse. I asked exactly what looked like and where it was. It was spot on and i gave her it. She was over the moon and i felt gr8 about myself 4 helping someone out. That feelings better than money to me. Her daughter came back to thank me and said she cant believe not 1p is missing. Shw offered me money being so greatful and i refused. I just said, please just dont do it again as u may not b so lucky. This proves it. 😕 shame

My kids college funds every thing including our home and paid off investment property.. I had nervous breakdown.. Tried off myself but punished myself instead. Break down because woke with traumatic brain injury stroke and ANEURYSMS SO I can't work and I can't get it back. PLASTIC surgery head to toe 3 x's so she looks like Franken freak.. At least there's that..
      I have NO sympathy for people who STEAL.. ESPECIALLY from the person who ALREADY did pay for all the BULLSHIT she ever wanted. 3 private posh rehab for brother. Immediately used drugs every time..
      We ALL will face our judge.. May HE be MERCIFUL with each of us.. Uncle told me he was shocked when told her she NEEDS to at LEAST TRY and make payments, sign an agreement.. Hell no, she said to his SHOCK.. Insisted he provide her referral of a crooked criminal lawyer in case my sons or I pursue her (no problem throwing brother under the bus..smh SO figures..), he's married to her sister and obviously she was made to leave IMMEDIATELY, NOT welcome there and cut off because at LEAST my uncle is honest. Neither are even slightly SORRY.. I'm VERY sorry.. I EVERY now n then I think I have let it GO and something this AWFUL .. Its like ripping open an old wound and literally pouring salt in it.. I was brain dead.. First few years seizures SO strong broke nose 3 times, broke skull several places - can't have short hair bcuz bald spots missing bone and a little brain matter too.. Stressful losing ability to work and ok it is awful but at least kids can continue private schools and college and investment portfolio strong and home had 5 years left...NOT by time I woke up..
      And then not sure WHEN but I remember that JESUS, OUR LORD AND SAVIOR DID WARN that families would indeed DO such EVIL.. I never NEVER in my wildest dreams even thought NOT a fleeting thought..PLEASE, NEVER let ANYONE do anything remotely close to what I somehow must have allowed.. I remember arriving from HOSPITAL and my documents were HIDDEN in bankers boxes - sealed and well hidden in corner of attic.. Every thing TORN apart and every thing stolen.. My kids were going to be dumped into foster care..so I was allowed to return.. May JESUS bless and protect and guide you..ALWAYS..

      I would scan them and tell them the facts and if it was a loser I would then ask if they would like it back. Id they started no, I would destroy the ticket in front of the customer and proceed to throw it away. If yes, I'd tell them if they had any reasonable doubt they can take it to another store or to our lottery office to double check it. The lottery machines have been wrong before and I have seen it. Several times I have seen a "losing" ticket that was actually a winner when scanned and the other way around as well. Always double check your tickets, winners or losers.
