One of the waitresses at a restaurant I managed had this happen. She had a $5000 winner and they said she read it wrong and it was only $5. She asked for it back and they refused to return it to her saying once she handed it to them, it became store property. She stood there at the counter and called the cops. Clerk was escorted out in handcuffs. It was an entertaining lunch break for her and for those of us who got to hear the story.
Ok, let me get this straight...No Jail Time if a retailer gets caught cashing a stolen lottery winning ticket, but if you steal a Twinkie you get arrested and serve jail time and fined and probation!!
Oh no, you can't steal Twinkies, that's a felony! but scam the customer out of thousands of dollars of winnings, that's a civil case, just pay the fine, and be more careful next time you scam for another winning ticket, don't get caught, says the judge.
I was actually almost cheated out of my lottery winnings at a small convenience store gas station in Marietta, Ga. I already knew the ticket was a winner, but the clerk after scanning quickly pocketed the ticket, then looked me in the face and told me the ticket wasn't a winner. I knew he was lying and told him so, then I shocked him by requesting he return my ticket to me, I worked at Circle-K part of which was selling lottery tickets. so I already knew the rules. He refused, telling me that he had to submit all tickets back to the lottery agency, that he'd already thrown it away, we bantered a bit, he got his manager involved, and after more back and forths, the police were called. After the officer heard my side, he asked the store keeper to rescan the ticket which back then did not show the ticket was a winner, but had been scanned, I told the officer that the ticket was mine, and since it was supposedly declared "no winner" then I had a right to have my ticket back, I also informed him that I saw the man's actions once he scanned the ticket, putting his hand in his pocket after he pretended to bend over to put it in the trash, that most people don't bend over to drop something in the trash, they just drop it in. that I saw him put that same right hand into his right pocket while standing up straight again. The officer asked the manager what was the policy regarding tossing out scanned tickets, the manager told him, they threw the tickets away if they weren't of any value. The officer then said then return the young lady's ticket to her, they did, later I actually went to the lottery office and presented my ticket. I found out it was a winning ticket I'd won $1,500.00. After much investigation it was discovered this was a common occurrence at this station, even if it was only a $2.00 return, the owner and that clerk were prosecuted, there were some acquaintances of theirs involved also. Happy to say that business lost it's license and the business closed.
Love hearing these stories though I guess it sucks knowing how frequent that is. We're not allowed to gamble in hawaii sadly but why is it not a law that the machines NEED to face the customer, even make an audible sound if the ticket even wins a dollar. That'd deter dishonest clerks with lights flashing, whistles going off, firecrackers popping (well maybe not literally), but they'd be damn ballsy to claim the ticket isn't a winner when the store looks like a dance club blasting techno music... Would also be good if they played different sounds based on the amount and even better reads it out like "Congratulations, you just won 145 dollars", no way they'd be able to cheat customers like that and it makes my blood boil thinking how many people got cheated and how many millions were probably pocketed by straight up thieves...
1 lady must be over 70 working behind lottery stand- thought it was ridiculus because she got fed Up of me asking to check my tickets- and then told me the machine doesnt work anymore- found that dogey. Not rascist but SOME people from other country MUST get the proper training - both old n young don't matter- just have to be careful from now on
Your story makes no sense. You said you knew it was a winner in the beginning but at the end you say you had to have it scanned at the lotto office then found out you won the money.
@@krazykuz13cmc senseless only to those who wish to make it so. Never said Where I purchased it or even how much my ticket was worth, only said I knew it was a winner. Back in those days. It was always best to redeem the ticket at the purchasing site. And Definitely if possible at the lottery headquarters. Keeps things from becoming complicated. Out of an overabundance of caution, I suppose, I never once purchased a ticket at my work site.
My coworker won 3,000$ on a pick 3 we scanned it with our phone app at lunch. She wanted me to take her to the store to cash in so we did and as soon as the clerk did he took the ticket and crumpled it up and threw it in the trash and says sorry your not a winner. She said well give me back my ticket and he tried giving her a different one that was not a winner. I was with her and said give me that trash can we are getting her ticket back it is a winner. He refused, we wouldn’t leave until we got it back. She knew the numbers so we knew which one the ticket was. She got her money and he got fired.
So true. Years ago I thought I had a $20 winner and the clerk told me no. After I got home, I started thinking about it; it was a cashword so even if it wasn’t a $20 winner, it was likely worth $2-$5. Of course he kept the ticket.
I've had clerks tell me "not a winner" when I previously checked and had a winner...one for 50 bucks! When I caught them they got all mad and indignant like I was the Ahole! 🤨
Tip: Always take a picture of your ticket before handing it over. If a clerk says the ticket is NOT a winning ticket, take the ticket back, anyway (check it again somewhere else). If they starting acting funny about giving you back the ticket….you know you won!

I was in a store once where after a guy was told he wasn't a winner, he asked for his ticket back & the clerk actually said no. He didn't want to give him his ticket back! He walked outside to get his phone to call the police. I was leaving as he was going back into the store. Not sure how that one ended. The clerk was pretty bold because it wasn't like the store was empty. It was a racetrack with at least 8 customers there. Smh ppl are insane.
You can do this anymore; winning tickets up to $50 automatically print. Anything over will ask you first. In any case, it pops up on screen In the customer’s face.
I've always asked for my numbers back. One guy in Tennessee asked me why?that it was a losing ticket. I said because they're My numbers and I wanted them back to play them again. That I had payed for them and they were Mine He said I couldn't have them back. I called the cops. And it was revealed that i actually had a 2500.00 winner and that scumbag tried to tell me I hadn't won anything. Always check
I'm in Canada, most places won't even scan a ticket here unless you have signed it! A few smaller mom and pop stores don't care and I don't take my tickets there anyway. Then the checking machines are always in plain sight and all tickets, losers and winner are placed on the counter beside the customer, along with the paper from the checker. I normally check my tickets at the public scanner first, but those are steps in place for those who don't. Many years ago, a store owner scammed a 1 or 2 million dollar ticket from someone and they are trying to make sure it never happens again.
Curt Riedel I'd love to know where at because the same exact things happen to me i love in Alabama but go to Lawrenceburg and other small towns around the line amd I knew one ticket was a winner but he threw it away and said it wasn't I knew it was a win for 20.00 but still it was mine so from now on I always sign back and just scan myself
as somebody who works at a gas station selling lotto tickets and has also worked at a bar that sold lotto tickets,, we have to keep all winning tickets. it's unfortunate because sometimes people want to keep their winning tickets as a little keepsake
One time I won what I thought was a dollar and told the clerk exchange it for a new ticket turned out to be five dollars and the store clerk was honest enough to tell me I won five dollars. He a Nice guy
this is dumb and preventable by the store. my store has the machine facing the costumer, they can see well and clear if they won. and also it makes a winner noise if they do
Jose Munoz: No, they don't have to ask, but if they don't, just ask for the ticket back yourself. Also, do you have a computer? If so, you can check your numbers on there. What I do is I check my numbers on the computer and then I take them to the store to check them a second time, in case I missed something.
Something I want you guys to remember, most of the time these machines that scan your scratch off or lotto ticket, the official one, not the one where you can go check yourself but the one the employees use to scan will AUTOMATICALLY print out a ticket the store keeps to prove payouts. If it’s being scanned by the official machine and nothing prints out then it’s not a winner. So when you hand your suspected winner over, make sure you’re paying attention to the employee scanning on the lottery machine and if it’s a winner you’ll hear the machine print out something that the store needs to show an payout. Just make sure you’re paying attention when they’re scanning is my point
Just for people's safety I will point out that machines I've worked with, if the money won is over a certain amount the machine will ask the clerk if they WANT TO cash it out. If they press no, it will NOT print out a ticket. Ours was anything $30 or over even though our policy was to cash out anything up to $100. So an unscrupulous cashier could get a ticket that said the customer won $500, and it asks the cashier if they want to pay it out, and then if they hit no, it clears it and does not print out a ticket. IF they print out a ticket, or if the machine does it automatically, that clerk can NOT take it to another store to cash it because it's already listed at cashed when the ticket prints. IF it prints a ticket, either on it's own or by the cashier hitting yes, the only way they can get the money is to process it on the registers there in the that store and take it out of the register. So if you are in doubt, ask for the ticket back. I always offered non winning tickets back to the customers.
We had a customer that thought he lost on his ticket and threw it on the floor. He didn't speak good English and we had to stop him and make sure he knew that he indeed did win. It wasn't as much as these tickets here. But it was $500. We need to look out for each other cause karma goes both ways.🙂
Years ago, I worked at a small breakfast shop. I had a co-worker do this to an elderly regular customer. The customer asked for it back and then later asked me to re-check his ticket. It was a winner. Not much, but a winner. You could literally see the blood drain from my co-workers face. He claimed it was an accident. But we knew it wasn't and called for him to be fired. Of course, my asshole boss bought his story. Months later he got fired from stealing from the till. My boss should've listened.
po go • sounds like your boss should have been fired for not listening to the customer. What the hell ever happened to the saying the customer is always right. 😒
@@shondacasselman1979 The boss owned the breakfast shop. The customer wasn't the one that called for him to be fired. It was me and a third co-worker. I don't think my boss( at the time) was willing to take two 19 year old, pt. time waitresses/college students word over the word of the guy that was working with him for years. But, we were correct. As he later found out. It wasn't too long later that he himself caught the guy stealing from him. And about a year later the place was gone, under new ownership with a different name.
Taht's another thing they did here. you basically cannot play if you run a store with a lotto machine. If i remember right, your immediate family also cannot play or claim prizes. This was put in effect about 10 years ago when there was a big scandal in the area similar to this news story. It's the same rule you'll see in product promotion contests where all employees are disqualified. For example, a fast food chain with a contest to win a TV.
I was talking about the trio at the end that stole the elderly persons ticket. It was actually $10000. I didn’t hear them say they had to pay that one back.
The lotto system where I work makes an audible "WAHOO! WINNER!" to prevent jackasses from doing this exact thing. I've gotten more money handouts from kind winning customers after winning or cashing out, than if I'd been a theiving loser.
Everyone above this comment is a dumbass minus the OG commenter... how long do u think they’ve been doing this, u idiots think they got caught the only time they tried it? They’ve probably done it numerous times before being questioned... smh dum niggas yo
Only a handful of clerks are dishonest. With the lottery commission investigating "more than a half dozen cases" there is no way bad guys are getting away with anything. /s
Well...Its called being a white person. C'mon guy's this isn't anything New. We could do just about anything and not be charged accordingly. Now if we were black or mexican then we just might have a problem on our hands.
Set up sting or not my rule of thumb is always scanned your tickets before you even handing them to a clerk. As for myself I double triple checked all of my tickets just to make sure!! Have a great day and good luck 👍🍀
Dude! I love it when customers win! I get to tell them, and if I sell them one that hits the jackpot, I always get promised a new car or vacation. Why would people steal? 😕 Taking joy from others, that's messed up. Giving joy to others is what is going to save us from the way society is headed.
Beware, that's a controllable feature on the machine. I came to work a couple weeks ago and found someone had turned off that function. Made me suspicious. Btw, if I scan a ticket and it's a loser I always ask if they want it back.
We also have to sign our tickets before they can be scanned by the clerk, we also have machines that you can check yourself and an app you can put on your phone. So no really excuse anymore that a store clerk should be able to steal it .
Yes, this happens all the time all over the country. This is why YOU HAVE TO CHECK YOUR TICKETS YOURSELF FIRST. Don't trust the 3rd party to let you know... Always always check your ticket first yourself.
@@Nuffsed81 Well first off, it's basically a scam (look at the winning statistics), second, a tax on the poor, since they're the ones gambling on the lottery, third, the tax will take a nice chunk out of the winnings.
@@randomdude4110 That is not stealing. You buy a ticket then you enter and agree to the terms and conditions which are written in black and white for all or see. You entered the contract by purchasing a ticket. Nobody took anything from anyone without them knowing, nobody took anything by use of force. You have a very open definition of what constitutes stealing. Being ignorant of the rules when buying into a lottery, buying into a lottery when the odds of winning are against you, buying into a lottery that may be taxed does not make it theft. It makes it a business model that you disagree and NOTHING more. Sorry but thats just the way it is. Something does not become stealing just because it does not sit right with you. I disagree with many business models but that just means I disagree, it doesn't mean they are stealing from people.
Store owners aren’t allowed to claim prizes in Ontario. An investigation was done years ago and found a RIDICULOUS amount of lottery winners were related to store owners. It was determined that you would win, they would give you a small pay out, and then give the ticket to a relative to cash. The scanners are now on the customer side of the counter for you to see the result.
Same in Alberta. But one trick that I have observed is when you win a free ticket. I've had occasions when I am eligible for numerous free tickets and the clerk short changes me and hopes that I don't notice and pockets one of the tickets. I always check the tickets myself on the lottery app and double check the number of tickets that the store issues before leaving.
Yes it’s true! I live in Canada too and these lotto machines say whether a ticket is a winner or not...surprising all US don’t have this as well? Either way, ALWAYS use a self-scanner so you don’t have to bother asking the clerk to check if you won 🤑
Now see, when someone asks me to check their losing ticket and I tell them "not a winner", I ALWAYS offer it back to them. "Don't take my word for it". This is how an honest person should act.
I do the same thing. I also remind them that there's a second chance play on all the scratch tickets, and that you can enter them online. Most people don't bother and I simply rip them up and throw them away, but I couldn't imagine ripping people off so blatantly.
@@kingjohn6278 on certain lottery games if you want all the money at once on a jackpot then the lottery will take a huge cut. But that’s not even considered taxes. That’s just the lottery getting their cut so they can pocket some for the government and reset the jackpot. That’s usually for bigger games though. If you win a secondary prize then they won’t take a cut but you still have to file it as taxes later. Usually they’ll give you a form. It’s pretty much the same procedure you get for winning a large amount at the casino.
Or maybe you're the dumb one for thinking he was going to give the money back to the other people. Obviously he wasn't. What are they going to do about it, call the cops?
When I was a clerk, I would warn my customers of this and I would show them how to scan their own tickets, and I would tell them that if a store doesn't have a machine to let the customer check it, then don't even use that store. There are so many dishonest clerks and it makes me so mad because it makes us all look bad. That is why I would educate my customers. I wasn't about to let another clerk steal from innocent people.
I would think that each state's lottery commission would take winning tickets into stores to get them checked as a way to keep clerks and store owners on the up and up. Clerks might be more leery of doing this if they knew it was possibly a set-up.
Why don't they just fix their lottery machines to do what the machines in Texas do? When a store clerk scans the lottery ticket, and it's not a winner it doesn't do anything. If it's a winner it plays this chime, and says "You're a winner!" very audibly.
going to just quote a different comment 'This is a old slight of hand cashiers trick. The cashier keeps a few popular non winning tickets near by either under the register counter etc. They usually only do this scam during a rush of customers. They take your winning ticket "drop it" quickly pick up a non winner scan it through the machine quickly tear up the non winning lottery ticket and show you the print out stating it's not a winner hoping you wont call bs. It's also common for them to switch out a $2 winning ticket with your $50 winning ticket."
Charles Ncharge yes, here in ohio also. I usually know if I'm a winner or not before I turn the ticket in though, I haven't been scammed yet, but don't play often either.
Clerks can still scam you by saying "congratulations you're a winner, here you go, you won 20 bucks!" when in reality you won $700. Theres so many ways for clerks and convenience store owners to scam customers out of lottery earnings.
Overtime nah u can pay it unless he was broke and had to do the time Most cops just give u a citation if it’s under a Qtr but most of em aren’t that experienced with bud so they probably thought it was a lot really depends where you at
Yeh but they either scan a dud ticket instead or fake scan it (like wave it under the scanner the wrong way but you cant tell from where you stand). Either way the music wont play and you'll leave and then they scan it for real and keep any winnings
Pay a fine?! Some poor kid gets caught stealing 5k he gets YEARS in a hellish penitentiary. Fines are for shit like littering and vandalism, not stealing such large amounts for yourself as it's so easy to steal more money than it costs you in fines for the few times you are caught.
Yeah it's retarded, they are still stealing $5000, they should get the same time, unless the person caught stealing $5000 was robbing people at gunpoint or something, then they should get longer cause of mental damage they are causing.
That's called pale people's privilege 🤷 Or Triple P... She probably got plenty on her record the way she just blankly lied, she's just simply a WHITE WOMAN ..... Any other race would of been doing TIME NOT PAYING FINES... Oh and I'm white so save it ❤️
My fear would be I'd get TOO excited telling them and make a big deal out of it, and they get mugged outside the store from some jerk who was there at the time. I'd be more tempted to whisper, "Yeah, it's a winner."
Honestly I rather it be private… Not so loud… Can’t trust anyone around me when I win a large amount! I always appreciate the excitement from them but no one is safe walking out the door.. That’s just me though!
I am glad that now days they have the ticket scanner bar facing the customers so they can see for thereselves if it's a winner or not. And we always ask if they want their ticket back. If not, we stand there & tear it up several times in front of them & discard it in the trash.
I work in a gas station so I redeem tickets all day long. They recently added a musical sound effect that plays if the ticket is a winner so the person can hear it. No sound=no winner. Music=winner. Brilliant Florida Lottery...
Our lottery machines here in Ohio where I'm at yell "wooo winner winner" lol So cant really hide that. Also we have the little self scanner things people can check their tickets that do the same thing.
I had one customer who was busy chatting with others and didn’t have a winning ticket. I returned it to him, but he kept insisting it was a winning ticket. Everybody in then queue and my colleagues had to tell him that why would she return the ticket if she wanted to pocket the winning, and we had to kind of sing the tune that the winning tickets make lol. Oh life.
That could be kind of dangerous tho especially if you scan your ticket in a store full of people ad the machine start screaming this nigga won yall lol
I check tickets at my job and I can't even count how many people don't sign them. I remind them before I scan them because, at least here, legally they must be signed before giving out the winnings. I ALWAYS sign mine as soon as I buy it- so even if I lose it, it can't be claimed.
I feel like all the dislikes are people who don't understand that the dislike doesn't go to whatever bad guy the story is about, just the person who made the video.
You have to watch these clerks carefully. I say: C A R E F U L L Y ; They might switch the ticket for one they know isn't a winning one. Or am I being too distrusting and suspicious here...?
They should have made the lady pay the fine equal to 50% of the total redemption value. Dont care and have no sympathy if it makes them broke for the next 30 years.

In Germany the screen that displays the results is facing you when they scan the ticket, so there's no way for the clerk to lie about whether you won or not since it's right in front of you, unless you're blind of course, the US should adopt a similar system.
I used to work at a gas station and it was always exciting when somebody won. I loved seeing them start to smile big when I told them they won. I would celebrate with them. I couldn’t imagine taking their winnings away from them like that.

When I'd run my dad's business, I'd always inform the customer it's not a winner and proceed to ask if they'd like me to rip it up or if they'd like it back. And I'd shred the ticket in front of them. Messed up some people would take advantage of this.
@TheShinobiCode I work part time at a shell gas station. When the lottery ticket code is scanned a second time, it will say "cash rejected, previously redeemed".

@Buck Berthod I live in San Francisco. I've bought lottery tickets at bodegas, supermarkets and 7-Eleven stores, and I've yet to hear any of the machines out here make sounds if you win money. The ones out here will just display what you've won on the screen, after you scan your ticket barcode. Maybe it varies from State to State, in regards to machines that will have sounds if you win money. I won $326 over a month ago on a "Fantasy 5" ticket. It would've been cool if the machine I scanned my ticket on said congratulations.
I've noticed when ever I've went into the 7/11 by my house the clerk is always so pushy about checking my ticket for me even when I'm going to check it my self. It makes you wonder.

Now go back to the store camera, identify the Real Winner, and get him his money!!! If the police or court keeps it, then they're just as much a theif as the store clerk!
We've done that in Canada a number of times, especially for huge winners. But since people today commonly have three Passports from three difffernet countries in three different names if they skeedaddle back to the old home town we're pretty much out of luck, lottery money wise.
I know it happened to me at the gas station in Hales corners I purposely gave her a winning lottery ticket. She told me it was a loser but I knew it was a winner and she said it was a loser. I asked for the manager the manager came and she says in the garbage I don’t know which one it is and I said my names on it he pulls it out confirms it, if you’re wondering she still works there. I don’t wanna say the companies name but they’re the only gas station with the red bag.
I work at a gas station and we check tickets, and a few times we had tickets that wouldn’t show up as winners and I’d tell them it wasn’t a winner and they say it was so I’d just give it back to them. But our machine says “woo hoo you’re a winner” out loud so they knew I wasn’t lying. We also have a screen that shows what goes on on our lotto machine for the customers to see.
I would scan them and tell them the facts and if it was a loser I would then ask if they would like it back. Id they started no, I would destroy the ticket in front of the customer and proceed to throw it away. If yes, I'd tell them if they had any reasonable doubt they can take it to another store or to our lottery office to double check it. The lottery machines have been wrong before and I have seen it. Several times I have seen a "losing" ticket that was actually a winner when scanned and the other way around as well. Always double check your tickets, winners or losers.

SO glad you got your ticket back- trust your instincts everywhere plz because they are from our Guardians

Not sure how that one ended. The clerk was pretty bold because it wasn't like the store was empty. It was a racetrack with at least 8 customers there. Smh ppl are insane.

Yep. These days we have an app scanner to check if you won or not.
Additionally, there's an app that can record whatever you're doing on the screen. Use this one as well so you have proof that you checked beforehand.
When the clerk says, “NoOpe” get your ticket back
and try another location
this is dumb and preventable by the store. my store has the machine facing the costumer, they can see well and clear if they won. and also it makes a winner noise if they do
My store always asks if we want to the ticket back after they check it.
anonymous johnson but do they have to ask? Aren’t they supposed to give it back right after
Jose Munoz: No, they don't have to ask, but if they don't, just ask for the ticket back yourself.

If it's a winner it plays this chime, and says "You're a winner!" very audibly.
going to just quote a different comment
'This is a old slight of hand cashiers trick.

There are many scrumbag store/gas station clerks who wouldn't hesitate to steal your winnings. I hope they all go to jail.
back in my country when the clerk check the ticket & the ticket is winner, the computer make a lil music so we know we win
But what if the music dont turn on
In Canada too, it's a loud music too and we have the little scanner in the store.
Yeh but they either scan a dud ticket instead or fake scan it (like wave it under the scanner the wrong way but you cant tell from where you stand). Either way the music wont play and you'll leave and then they scan it for real and keep any winnings
I’d thought you’d be Canadian. In Canada it makes a “ Woohoo “ sound when you win.
Over here in Canada you can self check with a little machine and it makes music and says winner on the top part.
That's an example of privilege!
@Chris Barnes will not shutup..truth is light.
@jane doe no excuse. A crime is a crime!
Yeah it's retarded, they are still stealing $5000, they should get the same time, unless the person caught stealing $5000 was robbing people at gunpoint or something, then they should get longer cause of mental damage they are causing.

Then you get robbed outside the dam store 🤦🏽♂️

Oh life.
When a winning ticket Is scanned the register should play a celebration sound so you know if you won
Some states do
It does in Florida, and the winning amount is displayed on a screen facing the customer.
