At the time, Nazi Germany still had relationship with the National Party of China. The reason they use Nazi flag is because as the ally of Germany, Japanese usually don't shoot people under that flag. Similar thing happened in NanJing as well during the massacre, a Nazi officer/diplomat of the embassy couldn't bare witness to the horrifying scene under the Japanese occupation in NanJing thus using a Nazi Flag saving as many as he could from the massacre.

Actually in 1937 Germany wasn’t an ally of Japan yet. And had closer ties with China. In fact the 800 is a German trained unit that’s why a lot of them use German equipment.

      @@Jose.AFT.Saddul Technically yes.
However, Nazi Germany and Empire of Japan did sign Anti-Comintern Pact in 1936/11/25. So it won’t be far fetched to say that Germany and Japan were in process of creating alliance prior to 1937.

The actual history of this battle was only with 452 Chinese soldiers defending against an entire Japanese army. It says "800" because the Chinese commander didn't want the Japanese to know how few they actually had. But anyways, the history of this battle is absolutely freaking insane. I mean it was Japan vs China at this warehouse and civilians across the river would literally watch the battle and cheer for the Chinese. I mean just incredible story.

It was 800 because they were really 800 from the start, but they wanted to pay tribute to their brothers who died fighting before the battle of Sihang Warehouse

It's a remake of a 1976 movie from Taiwan called 800 Heroes (八百壯士) which itself is a remake of a 1938 movie that dramatised the 1937 Battle of Sihang Warehouse in Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
It is generally understood that it was a showcase battle that was fought just opposite the foreign concessions of Shanghai in order to gain the support of the international community. It was also a rearguard action of sort to cover the withdrawal of Chinese forces from Shanghai after a months long battle to defend the city.
The flag raising incident was an iconic event that is in the popular memory of the Chinese diaspora but quite unknown within China itself. In fact it was this scene that resulted in the release of the film being delayed in China as it was deemed to be improper to have a movie glorifying the flag of the anti-Communist Republic of China when the Communist Party of China was preparing to celebrate her 100th anniversary.
The rationale that was eventually shared was that it was to assert that China still held sovereignty in Shanghai, especially to the refugees in the foreign concession.

A brief introduction to the background: the story takes place in Shanghai, which should have belonged to the British occupation of China at that time. Since 1840, the Qing Dynasty, then the legitimate government of China, has been colonized by European powers, including unequal treaties signed by European and Japanese countries ceding Shandong, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other places. In 1912, the Qing emperor abdicated, the Beiyang government took over China, opened more than 20 years of warlord civil war, and wiped out a generation.
In 1937, under domestic pressure, Japan launched the "snake swallowing elephant" battle plan with the intention of destroying China in three months. At the beginning, the Chinese army was ready to collapse. This is the background story.
The soldiers in the film are called "German weapons division", belonging to one of China's few elite troops, well-educated and equipped with sophisticated weapons, and served in the then legitimate government of the Republic of China (KMT). Because of the Warlord's civil war for more than 20 years, a large number of young people have been forced to recruit. Therefore, the combat effectiveness and organization of Chinese soldiers in the film are quite poor. Many ordinary people have been makers all their lives, and they have been recruited into the battlefield without even seeing the electric light.
From 1937 to 1945, warlords formed a unified Anti Japanese Alliance. In 1945, Japan surrendered. The two remaining parties in China are KMT and CCP, which can be said that KMT basically unified the Chinese mainland at that time. After three years of civil war, CCP unified China and founded the people's Republic of China in 1949. KMT retreated to Taiwan, that is, the Republic of China. Until today, China's civil war has not ended.
In the eight-year Sino Japanese War, more than 30 million Chinese military and civilian casualties, excluding the previous civil war of Chinese warlords, the war of aggression against China by the Eight Power Allied forces, and the subsequent civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. For example, Sichuan is one of 34 provinces in China. During the Sino Japanese War, Sichuan sent 3.5 million soldiers to participate in the exhibition. After the war, 700000 soldiers were killed and injured.

The defense of the warehouse was important for 2 reasons:
    1) To slow Japanese advance so the NRA main force can retreat and regroup towards the west
    2) Rally western support. The international settlement across the river was a multi nation "colony".

  • @linefire9870

funfact: All the survivors in the warehouse were held captive by the british, as a agreement with the japanese. When the japanese invaded again in WW2, they became prisoners of war, and were sent to do hard labour in the Pacific. So.... these guys never returned to their homes until after 1945. That's like, 8+ years. (That's if they actually survived the japanese occupation).

It is not a neutral zone.
During the age of colonization, European powers took concessions (pieces of land) throughout China and in Shanghai. They had their own law enforcement and military garrison(s). The reason why Japan didn't attack these zones was because they didn't want to start unnecessary wars with the European powers ( such would be deemed an act of war)

8 district in Shanghai was divided to 8 countries after 8 countries alliance war against boxer rebellion during qing dynasty. They called those area consession. The one in movie, behind the warehouse belong to uk. The war took place in 1937 before japanese officially at war with the west in 1942. So during this time, japan, uk, us, Fr, de, ru, it, are ally. That's why Japanese troops only bombard territories hold by the China nationalist and leave out other consession unharmed. Act of bombarding other consession is consider as act of war against those nation from the west.
As for shooting through nazi flag, the japanese sharp sniper shooter saw through the ploy and realizes the one behind the flag isn't German, but Chinese. Japan and Germany is ally at this time.
