It has been a little over a year since I subscribed to Age of Vintage. Having been born in 1953, I read quite a few of the magazines that featured the Glamour of Hollywood, and so I've really enjoyed watching your videos. In watching this particular video, though, I was surprised to see how much you left out about Mr. Crooner. His wife wrote a book after he died. He was a real "prize." He was abusive to his wife and children. One of his sons committed suicide. But "back in the day" nobody would have believed Mrs. Crosby, not with the persona of the "swell guy" Mr. Narcissist had created for himself to preserve his image. They probably would have thrown all sorts of verbal rocks at Mrs. Crosby for speaking the truth. It is heartbreaking to see how much was swept under the rug in the name of keeping up appearances, and how adversely it affects people's lives.

I read this anecdote way back in the 70's: Bing was on an airplane, reading a book or newspaper or something, and he noticed a woman on the other side of the aisle who kept leaning forward and staring at him. Eventually he turned and looked her in the eye and said, "Well I have to be SOMEWHERE, don't I?"

Exactly! But image is what most people wanted. Before movies, most people grew up associating statues and pictures of religious icons, and then people of note with purity of character, excellence in every aspects of daily life. As my dear Father used to say, “ Clean-cut and wholesome “. And sad to say, so many people are still willing to push aside the truth because of the image they see in either music videos or movies, or television.

I have read just about every book written on Bing, he was a playboy in his younger years and he loved to gamble, but when he married Dixie he stayed true, a fact that several other actors and actresses have confirmed in their autobiographies. As far as mob ties I haven’t read anything about that other than mobsters were members in the different country clubs and social scenes and most actors and singers interacted with them like playing golf and being at the same parties. Nothing nefarious about that. I’m sure you ignored them at your peril. If you do some research you will find Dixie, Bings first wife was an alcoholic and Bing was at his career height and away from home a lot, and when she got cancer Bing stayed close and took very good care of her. This comes from other autobiographies of people who knew them both so unbiased. Also Bings drug addict son wrote that book actually the publisher had a ghost writer help and made it a nasty tell all type book to sell copies. Later his son disavowed what was written and many prominent people came to Bings defense but once a lie is written gullible people who either don’t care and are too lazy to dig deeper believe it. Bing wasn’t a saint but he wasn’t what this guy made out or what that book portrayed. I was impressed about things I learned about Bing, inventions and abilities that aren’t widely known. Read some credible biographies and see for yourself. I came away admiring the man

I don't think Bing was ever home long enough to be a parent. Do I think he was a tyrant? Yes. Do I think he was a bad parent? Define "bad". Did he beat his sons? Compared to today's discipline being "time-out"? Yeah. He was born at the turn of the century to hardworking parents and was taught to work like hell to get what you want because nobody is going to give it to you. And before you throw stones at Bing, remember that Dixie also had a hand in raising their sons, too. She is 50% responsible for what happened in that home and whatever went down between her husband and their boys. And for the record, Gary was 20, the twins were 18, and the youngest was 14 when Dixie passed; they werent the babies the media portrayed them to be.

This did not surprise me. So many of his roles had an undercurrent of "I'm better than you", and he always gave the impression that there was little acting involved in these parts. A brilliant, indeed innovative, singer, he always seemed to need to dominate those who performed with him. In several of his musical films you can see his co-stars struggling to hold their own, not technically but professionally. His role in Robin and the Seven Hoods is almost biographical, you stood in his way at your own peril.

He was very well known for being considerate and supportive to his fellow performers. Maybe his charisma, and yes others say he had it in bucketfuls was why he stood out in pictures. And if you watch the superstars of that time, the John Wayne's, Cary Grants they never seemed to act much because they were so natural on screen.

Bing Crosby was a very talented entertainer who many of us older generation were used to seeing on our TVs growing up. His son Garys book “going my own way”, painted his father in very bad light, but according to Gary his publishers wanted the facts embellished in order to sell more copies, and his siblings also denied it’s accuracy, so there you go, don’t believe everything you read.

I get the impression that a lot of the bad things mentioned in this video hit piece came from that book.
What's also not mentioned is that his first wife died, it didn't end in divorce. Bing did cause people to say "hey, wait a minute" when he then married the *much* younger actress Kathryn Grant. But then they moved to Hillsborough, had kids, and remained married until he died.

One very surprising thing about Bing is that he could not read a note of music.
He is so relaxed about his singing and yet, you handed him a piece of music, he needed help to learn it.
Eventually he learned the song and it was never forgotten.
Through the years he developed a "wonderful ear" and was able to learn a piece of music on the spot.
His memory must have been terrific because once he sang a song, he could come back to it many times.
His style was definitely musical, so it is a miracle that he could "do so much with so little."

After reading, "Going my Own Way", by Gary Crosby I cringe when I hear Bing Crosby's Christmas songs. Gary said that Bing drank thru the holidays and sent his young sons off to a ranch to work. He beat Gary with a strap when he gained weight. Bing probably hated his Christmas songs, because he made the holidays miserable for his young sons when it could have been joyful. One son said he wanted to commit suicide on Christmas just to get back at his Dad. Gary's book tells what happens when there is a unapproachable parent who believes in corporal punishment and the other parent is a alcoholic. When I hear "White Christmas", I turn the radio station (bad energy).

That's weird because I've read that Gary mentioned Bing was the only member of the family he never saw drunk and that his self discipline was unbelievable. Bing brought the ranch with the intention of getting the boys out of the phoney Hollywood lifestyle and to spend time with them. Also the value of working for money like most other people. Have you also read Gary's answers when reinterviewed years later or his reasons for writing what he did. Or that he later apologised to the Crosby family. And that comment from the other son is supposed to have come from a very questionable source. So I'd take that comment with a grain of salt. The same son mentioned how much he missed his father. Sooo🤷

If any of you have seen "Bing Crosby Rediscovered", Mary Frances brought forth old newspaper clippings of her older brother's antics. Bing may not have been a perfect parent, but his older sons gave him a fit. There were two sides to the story, and there is no such thing as a perfect family.

Just a correction - people state that Bing was jailed in 1930 on charges of drink driving which is not true. It was prohibition in the US during this time and he was jailed for DRINKING. The judge said to him "it states you've been drinking" Bing replied yes. The judge said "don't you know there is a prohibition law in affect" to which Bing replied, "yes but nobody pays any attention to it". The judge then said "well you'll have 30 days to pay attention to it". Also there was a statement made that he was jailed at 16 for drink driving? This is not correct - not sure where you get your information from. You state he signed a recording contract with Mack Sennett - again this is not true. He signed a contract with Sennett to make 6 short films - that was it. No recording contract. Also the statements about mob figures are more in line with Sinatra not Crosby. Whilst Bing did meet gangsters when going to speakeasys in the 20's and played golf with one of them he was definitely not in association with them and did not have the sleazy gambling exchanges with them as you state. He loved a gamble and owned many race horses and co-owned Del Mar race track but he could afford that - good on him. Not very informative overall and too many false statements - I recommend more detailed research.
