Catcher is really the one position in baseball that you really have to want to play in-order to make it simply because you probably have the arm ability to play corner OF, 3B or SS and probably can work a glove good enough to play 1B but yet have chosen to make your way in baseball by being a literal target practice dummy.

I watched an interview with Johnny Bench last night, and they asked him about the Buster Posey injury. He said that he always let the runner see the plate. If they can see the plate, they will slide. If you take that away from them, they will go for you. He also said that he pointed his left foot at them so if they tried to spike him the shin guard took all the force. I watched Johnny and the Reds through their championships in 1975, and 1976. The best catcher at the time.

Look a bit closer , buster went a long way from missing the catch to getting in the way , if he focused on actually catching the ball first , the runner would've passed him by no collision .
Buster knew dam well he did not have the ball , yet he threw his body into the runners path anyway .
Clearly busters split second reaction to at least give out some punishment if he couldn't get the out did not work out very well for him ,
his body position was completely retarded . He's dam lucky his moronic decision didn't end up worse .
Bottom line , the hit he took was avoidable and entirely his own fault.

Notices he wasnt in the running lane, Runner didnt need to challenge, and for his protection shouldve slid.. The challenge at the plate where a lowered shoulder was allowed and the throw took the catcher into the running lane.. thats when its a runners challenge and catcher's place to contest his challenge.. thats where we see the grit of baseball...

Catchers are the baddest players on the field. Yes, I’m a catcher, why does that matter?

some were taught to run into the catcher in hope they'll lose the ball

He should have been ejected. Run into the catcher, fine, but when you throw the elbow, you're trying to hurt someone. Hit the showers chump.

I am a catcher and I was the only catcher on my team one season and while I was batting I fouled a ball onto my toe and wrecked it. I had to catch the rest of the game with a dead toe.

I took one off the left shin on a wild pitch at bat and it swelled bad and had to catch 5 more innings on it so I feel your pain

Could you do a video about 9th inning, 1 out sac flies like at 1:00? I know it’s very specific but they are fun plays.

gotta love how people lay the catchers out when they get hurt they act they are worried about them

That’s what they are supposed to do. It’s part of the game. If the catcher has the ball they block the plate and the runner is supposed to lay them out. They do truly care. It’s part of the game.
