Catcher is really the one position in baseball that you really have to want to play in-order to make it simply because you probably have the arm ability to play corner OF, 3B or SS and probably can work a glove good enough to play 1B but yet have chosen to make your way in baseball by being a literal target practice dummy.
No you need an arm to play every position if not a guy can steal or get an extra base. You need three things as a catcher durability, an arm and eye sight. Not only do you have to take hits you got to be able to toss a guy out at second or third on top of that catch anything near you. The catcher is the anchor to the
@@samjohnson4626 thats exactly what he is saying... His point was that the catcher likely has the ability to play most positions but still chooses to be the one behind the plate
I watched an interview with Johnny Bench last night, and they asked him about the Buster Posey injury. He said that he always let the runner see the plate. If they can see the plate, they will slide. If you take that away from them, they will go for you. He also said that he pointed his left foot at them so if they tried to spike him the shin guard took all the force. I watched Johnny and the Reds through their championships in 1975, and 1976. The best catcher at the time.

The gear that the catcher is wearing is just to prevent serious injuries. The only thing that will really protect you is your mitt, so the game is in your hands.

Look a bit closer , buster went a long way from missing the catch to getting in the way , if he focused on actually catching the ball first , the runner would've passed him by no collision . Buster knew dam well he did not have the ball , yet he threw his body into the runners path anyway . Clearly busters split second reaction to at least give out some punishment if he couldn't get the out did not work out very well for him , his body position was completely retarded . He's dam lucky his moronic decision didn't end up worse . Bottom line , the hit he took was avoidable and entirely his own fault.
Don't block the plate if you don't have the ball. Posey didn't give him anywhere to go except through him. His mistake caused the rules to be changed, and made baseball less exciting because of it.
Played catcher in high school only, and I can say I have had every single moment in this video. Its like racing, your going to hurt and you cannot be afraid of it. Not for weak men
(this comment is for my catching students and youth league & HS athletics students). Where posey got hurt.. Shouldve been an out.. Notices he wasnt in the running lane, Runner didnt need to challenge, and for his protection shouldve slid.. The challenge at the plate where a lowered shoulder was allowed and the throw took the catcher into the running lane.. thats when its a runners challenge and catcher's place to contest his challenge.. thats where we see the grit of baseball...
The flagrant failure to attempt to score by Cousins in destroying the 2011 season for San Fran resulted in a rule change, and Cousins being drummed out of baseball.
In college, I wasn’t a player, but was working at the team’s practice. Freshman catcher wasn’t wearing a helmet under his mask, just a hat. A future MLB slugger hit the catcher on top of his head with his backswing. The coach made all catchers wear helmets after that.
I just started playing catcher recently so this video resounds with me… Getting hit and walking it off is the easy part but Getting back behind the plate again and again is the toughest.
i dont play baseball, but why did some of those players running toward home look like they were basically decking the catcher rather than sliding? I SWEAR THEY WERE GOING FOR BODY NOT PLATE
Where's Molina's nutshot from a couple years ago? He took a 100+ mph foul ball straight to the junk and was out of the game for over a month because he had to have surgery on it
Do they need to start calling batters out for hitting the catcher on the backswing in order to give them a little more awareness of what they are doing? FFS.
One time in 12u baseball I was catching and there was a play at the plate and I had him out by like 5 feet but he decided to drop his head and truck me and I blacked out. 😂

Catchers are like the running backs of the MLB. Minus all the glory.
Both sport the guy throwing the ball gets all the credit 🤦

Just remember, at one point, catchers had no extra gear ☹️
And what gear they have on doesn't protect much.
True, which is impressive, but pitchers weren’t throwing 95mph either back then
