Apple 1984 Super Bowl Commercial Introducing Macintosh Computer (HD)

  • Iconic 1984 Apple Computer Macintosh commercial conceived by Chiat/Day and directed by Ridley Scott was nationally aired on television only once - during the 3rd quarter of the 1984 Super Bowl football game.
    Based on George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four (authored in 1949) the spot provided the allegory of the new Apple Macintosh computer providing an inspirational creative spark that would free individuals from the overbearing control of "Big Brother" - presumably, IBM's Personal computer.
    Here's my somewhat irreverent blog post about the ad, and the rise of Apple in terms of thinking differently, product design and control of the user experience: j.mp/Apple84

    • @dancnkc
      @dancnkc 3 года назад +5

      The drones in the commercial are Big Tech consumers. Twitter, Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft and RUclips. They aren't just enslaving us with our time by keeping us plugged into their services. They have now moved to control society's behavior. If you don't conform to the establishment's wishes, you will be cancelled. If you step out of line, you will be doxxed. If you have a different point of view, they will find you and either correct your thinking or root you out.
      Just turn it off, you say? Yes, that's somewhat possible now for some people. But more and more of our society must be plugged in if it wishes to eat. My business now requires me to be plugged in if I want to attract customers and support my family. Before I started up with my own business I worked for a company that required that I download several apps and utilize them for my job. And that was just a silly sales job. No, believe me, the day is coming where there will be no turning off Big Tech as it consumes us more by the day.
      1984 has certainly arrived, and soon it will go far beyond what this commercial depicted.

Apple was trying to to promote itself as the outsider trying to break the system... empowering the individual. But now, Apple has slowly become what it fought against when this commercial was produced. Apple hasn't gone as far as FB, Twitter or RUclips in using it's products to control people, but it's not innocent either. As for your 1984 reference. I've read the book. +sharkheadism Rated the best commercial of all time by TV Guide and Advertising Age back then in 1984. If you put it in the context of history, it made complete sense back then though 30 years layer it seems hilariously ironic. It was IBM vs Apple back in the day, the last 2 launches for Apple's Apple II and the Lisa were overwhelmed by IBM to the point that IBM got 26% of the market share by the time the Macintosh was released. During that time, the hipster and hacker counterculture viewed IBM as the establishment they wanted to break, Jobs grew up believing that as well though even he felt he had betrayed his roots which is why he wanted this message to resonate with hackers and hippies.

    This is absolutely perfect this commercial, brilliant! Every Sight & Sound spot on. And amazingly timely when '1984', had been predicted to be the year of humanities breakdown, by Author George Orwell. The fear of totalitarianism and it's one hope the young female athlete who smashes the screen spewing evil and then the human drones are showered in the light of truth. The '1984' imagined by the great film director Ridley Scott.
