What DAW are you using for voice over recordings? 🔊
This is the first time I've heard this, but as a huge fan of Resolve, I get it! Fairlight is fantastic. -Randy
Reaper. I used to use Audacity. But now that I can make my work quicker with Reaper's Actions Tools, I won't go back. Also works on Linux and I am totally Linux.
I use Reaper and Cubase Pro for my VO work. I'm trying AA this week, just to see what it's like.
@@Jan-S-Simonsen Awesome! Let us know how it goes :)
I needed some help just getting everything set up the way it should be for the best VO recording. This was the perfect video for me. Thanks so much for making it so easy to follow.
Thank you so much fo rthis video! I am using this for work and never did voiceovers before.
Amazing, that is super exciting!
I'm a rusty beginner and discovered this video because I just got a usb microphone and wanted to know what first steps were and what was next. And this super helpful and organized explanation of the basics took good effort on your part!
Thanks for watching, and we're glad this video was able to help you!
I switched to Audition from Audacity a year and a half ago and haven't looked back. I've been considering Reaper or Twisted Wave, but I have to admit that would mostly be for the sake of trying something new. :) And yes, spectral editing is AMAZING.
Hey Rob, Audition is such a loaded program. I will say, I wish they had a non-subscription option, but it seems everyone is going that way. I've heard from a lot of talent that Reaper is fantastic, and inexpensive. -Randy
Same here. I love Audition's punch & roll and spectral editing
the latter's a complete game changer since there's a lot of traffic noise outside my studio
Thanks for the tutorial! I just started VO and am trying to get used to audio programs and editing audio for the first time, so there's a lot I need to know, but this helps a lot.
Glad I could help! I think Audition is a great move because of the tools it comes with. The only downside is it's a subscription, but it is loaded with voice over tools -Randy
Thank you for this
Hi brother. I see everyone asking for things already hehe.
I have a question too, pleaseeeee!
What screen recording tool do you use to ensure HQ screen recording as you go about the tutorial?
I've seen it recommended elsewhere to have it as close to the final output (-3db) as possible so not to include unwanted bg noise etc. Why do you recommend -12db? Thanks
Right now I use Logic Pro as I used it for music before getting into Voice Over. I've debated switching to Audition mainly because of the frequency spectrum analyzer, but logic pro seems to be doing the trick so far. Would be interested to see what you think of Logic!
That's awesome. I am in a similar boat with ProTools. It will always be 'home base' for me. Logic is fantastic though! I think it has some of the best and most transparent sounding stock plugins out there (to my ears). The Frequency spectrum analyzer is awesome, but I can't wrap my head around the editing in Audition. I don't blame you for sticking with Logic -Randy
Hello, I have just switched to Adobe Audition for my voice over business. I use a Scarlett Solo as my interface and currently use windows. My question is do you have a video that teaches how to combine audio and voice. I am having trouble , it says it has be to the same channels however I cannot for the life of me figure it out.
I’m using audition now, but am hearing great things about Twisted Wave. Not a Daw perse I know, but built for vo. I’d love to see you do a video on it
Noted! I haven't used it before, but we've heard good things as well. I've added it to the list -Randy
my voice is so deep i can hardly believe it myself after recording a voice over. is there a way to lower the tone of my voice and make it crystal clear?
very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Randy! Excellent video! Can you recommend a course to learn Adobe Audition? Especially one focused on VO work?
Oo that's a great question. I am not familiar with any, but you can check in with our list of approved VO coaches. www.voices.com/coaches
??? In your set up you say set default to stereo, butr then all tracks open in mono..when I do as you say, they are stereo, but only one 1/2 channel of narration and right side is blank --why?
Thank you so much ❤️
Hello, what hourly rate would you recommend a beginner voiceover narrator charge? Specifically for one who does audio book narration and is payed per hour of edited and proofed master tracks?
That's a great question and there is a lot to consider. I would suggest starting with a rate-guide like this www.voices.com/rates. Hope this helps! -Randy
I cant find the Preferences. I'm using a 2020 version.
Thanks for that video. I suggest you include Windows and not just Apple hotkeys.
Thanks for the feedback. I believe they are all the same, just sub option for alt. -Randy
Thank you so much!
Can using a smartphone's speaker as the hardware for connecting to Adobe software work for beginners who can't afford the voice over hardware equipments?
I've never seen that done before. You can always use your built-in sound card and plug a microphone in via USB or headphone input. Hope this helps -Randy
I've been a protools user since 2015. But, now they have changed and Adobe Audition looks like a winner for me.Thank you:).
Nice! Adobe Audition is an awesome tool.
Very good step by step and At an awesome pace for learning. Thanks! j salas
Also, you can save VO to a cloud backup in case computer decides to take a break lol You can grab another backup computer plug in and grab file.
That's a really good point! Better to keep yourself protected. -Randy
Awesome 👏
Thank you! Cheers! -Randy

How do I get my Levels to be at a consistent 12dB?
Make sure it's -12dB not 12dB!
A practical way to achieve this is to find that sweet spot when adjusting the gain (whether that's on your microphone or your audio interface).
Try talking in a normal voice and adjust until the levels are hitting just under -12dB.
You can also try to normalize the audio when editing on your preferred DAW/Software.
A W E S O M E ! Thank you...
Thanks for watching!
Why would anyone use adobe audition and pay every month to use it when there are so many daws you can pay for one time and own?
It's a solid question. There are a few decent reasons. 1, continuous updates. When you're paying a subscription, it's fair to expect the product to be updated to keep current with OS and plugin updates. 2, it has tools built-in that aren't on other DAWs, like the spectral frequency editing. Im with you though, I'd prefer to but it outright. -Randy
Reaper has spectral analysis, is frequently updated, has automation, and is basically free. Reaper's learning curve can be steep, but that learning curve is way cheaper than the 100s of dollars you spend on a year's worth of Adobe Audition.
