Rice cookers are brilliant, but these videos are geared towards helping people through the cost of living. This is a way to cook basmati rice without one, saving money
I was at my brothers for dinner last night, I’m not a huge fan of rice…. But my brothers rice was amazing. I asked him what he’d put in the rice and he said Swartz pilau rice seasoning. It’s around £2 for a jar but we’ll worth it for people like me that don’t really like rice. 👍
I use a similar method except I don't measure the water, I put more in than needed, it helps to keep the rice grans separated when cooking. I then drain nearly all of the water and like yourself, let the steam in the pan finish the cooking.
Adam, you are AWESOME. Actually needed this. Living with so many Koreans, 90% of the rice we eat is the kind most people consider Sushi rice... and I lived in Kochi for a bit, so I love making Ghee Rice with Jeerakasala Rice - but since THAT is juuuuuuust different enough from Basmati to fall under the Indian export ban, despite having a goodly stock, I'm saving it JUST for Ghee Rice... a longwinded (sorry) way of saying I need to start making Basmati more often and it's still hit or miss for me. YOU have really helped! Thank you! Oh... for short/sushi-style medium grain rice if you've not got a rice cooker: bring 5 1/4 or so cups of water with one stick of Margarine (NOT Butter) to a boil in a PAN, not a pot. Add your rice, stir it a bit. Reduce heat to very low, cover tightly, let cook 23 minutes. Turn off heat, let sit 5 mins. Always perfect. Don't thank ME, thank my Korean in-laws LOL
Hi Adam, I love the video. I've got a better way of cooking rice, a rice maker, and I would never do it any other way. I use to cook rice the way you showed on the video and then someone told me about the difference between a rice maker and doing it myself. What a difference, I prefer a rice maker, hands down.
Rice cookers are brilliant, but these videos are geared towards helping people through the cost of living. This method doesn't require a rice cooker making it much more accessible to people

About 45 years ago I bought a Tupperware Rice Maker/Cooker. Not electric! Its just a holey bowl within an ordinary Tupperware bowl. They're not available any more. I recently bought a replacement one on Ebay 'cos mine is now too old and the worse for wear. I can't cook rice without it. Basically I boil the rice in a saucepan of hot water for 12 minutes then transfer to the Tupperware, discarding the water. Pop the lid on and leave it to sit and cook in its own steam for 15 minutes. Result, dry fluffy beautiful rice every time. Love it. Can't live without it. Here's to the next 45 years, it will outlive me!! 😁
I use a Rice Cooker, actually a Multi Cooker thingy in its Rice Mode. Takes a while, at least 30 mins for White Rice and much Longer for Brown but is is all 'hands off' apart from the rincing bit. I generally do three or four portions in one go then freeze the rest for a quiick Microwave re-heat. But you are correct their is little to like in soggy rice, apart from pudding perhaps, which is the main reason I can not enjoy Risotto cos that has sloppy rice by design.

Basmati rice is my favourite - I just cook it in a huge pot of water and put it through a colander when it’s done. Cook it like it’s pasta. Never ever fails and you always get lovely seperate grains. I do use a rice cooker if I’m cooking a lot of rice though. All the trouble I used to have is cos I tried to cook it like some of the chefs on cooking shows, it was all bull shit really.
